Debating on swapping switches to the Inoveli Blue (Zigbee) or White (Matter). I’m leaning towards the matter ones but wanted to recommendations either way and why.

Matter is much less mature and has less functionality. Inovelli Blue by a mile

I have 13 of the Inovelli White Switches, been prioritizing Thread in my house. They work well with HA. I've been writing a PR for the matter servers for adding some of the custom matter clusters, as there are some parameters that aren't available yet

Firmware is still on 1.0, apparently new beta firmware helps some with connectivity issues

I have about 50 various Zigbee bulbs or switches and was looking to clean the “mess” so it all looked visually the same. My Zigbee network has been rock solid, wasn’t sure what would happen if I added a couple dozen more Zigbee devices.

What major features are the “white” missing, their site isn’t the easiest to navigate

LED light patterns, group bindings are the 2 that come to mind

Have you been happy with yours?

Yep! I have mostly Thread devices, so the network is rock solid. I know Homekit users have some gripes, but HA works great. I expect the missing features will be implemented both in Matter and Inovelli over the next year, plus I expect them to focus more on these switches, apparently they are outselling Zigbee 3 to 1

My only complaints were my home wiring, and there's been a bunch of flickering with some of my older potlights. Working through those issues though

For me, Zigbee group binding is key to a seamless lighting experience. Being able to create a Zigbee group allows me to control a roomful of lights instantaneously. Going back to sequential control/popcorning would be a big step backward, IMO

Yeah, that does sound great. Inovelli does have group binding in their firmware, but Matter support for it is not quite there yet. Was introduced in 1.3. See Inovelli docs:

NOTE: This is an experimental feature and is not supported by any hubs at this time. We’ve built it into the firmware, but no hubs support it.

Matter Bindings are used to “bind” two or more Matter devices together. The benefit is that when two Matter devices are bound together, they no longer need the hub to communicate with each other (they will still report status to the hub). This is important because if your hub goes offline, the bound Matter devices will still communicate. Some common examples are:

2+ Matter switches bound together to create a virtual multi-way setup (like if you have a light switch at the top of your basement stairs and another one at the bottom but they are on different circuits, you can now associate them together so that when one turns on, so does the other)```

I chased that dragon from Insteon scenes to ZWave multicast to Zigbee groups 🙂

#

That's a good starting point for interactive control of mulitple devices from a single switch, but automation really needs something Zigbee groups that you can target as a single entity. Hopefully that's either in there or coming

#

Zigbee binding is really hit-or-miss in that the devices themselves have to support the functionality you want, and many times they don't. Maybe Matter will make that better and more consistent 🤷
