My mother has requested I flash her bedroom lights when the phone rings. Does anyone know of a device I could use to detect that? She just uses a pots land line. Worst case I could probably rig up voltage detection with some microcontroller, but I'm wary of doing that.

get a land line phone that has a light that flashes and put a light sensor on/next to it. wire it to a esp32? you could maybe use a microphone and use a sound trigger to do the same thing using any old hardware you might have?
maybe you could get a modem and connect it to the line?
from here the ideas start to get ridiculous...
