#Looking for a heavy-duty, always-on USB SSD to install HA on for my Raspberry Pi 4

Hello everybody,
I recently had a MicroSD card die on my RPi Zero... and just now I had a failure on my HA instance which is running on a RPi 4 and I had to cut off the power. Luckily everything seems to work fine. However, it was suggested I switch from a MicroSD card to a USB connected SSD. I would now like to ask for recommendations on a SSD that would have to contain all of the RPi OS and HA. I assume the SSD should be fast, VERY RELIABLE, survive always-on state and such. Can anybody recommend anything in that regard? Thanks in advance!

just buy one. all are good. don't buy a no-name. however a single disk can always fail, never had an issue. If you need more availability a raid can help but then you might consider another hardware plattform.

I think as long as I do regular backups I should be fine. I don't plan to install anything big on that SSD anyway... the same as right now on MicroSD ...just more reliable... thats all I ask for. I'll take a look. thanks for the input

if you have a 2.5" SSD lying around you just could buy an USB3 to SATA adapter. (instead of buying everything new)

I have my HA instance on a rPi4 with a USB SSD. Works well and most any USB SSD should work the same for HA. But beware - stuff happens and HA will freeze up sometimes. Since there is no way to reboot the rPi4 'safely' when this occurs, you still need to pull power which can mess up any drive which is currently being accessed when the power goes out. Typically, this will only cause data corruption so at worse you will need to restore from backup but with HA that can be a pain. I'm considering moving to rPi5 for just this reason. RPi5 has HW power switch which can be used to reboot/restart if HA ever locks up.
