#re-adding nanoleaf accessories with thread instead

hello everybody

i have home assistant running on a pi, everything was good, i have several lights, sensors, IR blaster etc

though, nanoleaf products always were finicky with connection. i know those have a thread network running on my Homekit/nanoleaf app (together with apple tv thread router)

i saw the wiki about how to add them by thread and decided to do that - so i removed the accessories both from HA, homekit/nanoleaf app
after that, i added them with the homekit integration and it seems to work (i am not certain if thread is active or how to check that)

BUT, now i don’t have them on my homekit/nanoleaf app anymore - and i can’t add them again as they are “already paired”.
As a result i only have basic control of color and brightness but effects are gone, nor can i use siri to control it anymore.

what am i missing?

you're missing nothing. homekit does not have any multi-admin functionality whatsoever.

#

you can use the HomeKit bridge integration to send the entities back to your Apple Home.

i’ll look into homekit bridge thanks !
few thoughts -
what happens if i now also add it with the nanoleaf integration? would there be duplicates for the same device of different integrations?

if my end goal is also make use of some effects (which are from the nanoleaf app, can it be achieved by adding the devices through the bridge to homekit/nanoleaf app?

no. the bridge does not transparently mirror devices.
you are not mirroring a Nanoleaf bulb, you are mirroring the entities derived from a Nanoleaf bulb.

#

the nanoleaf integration is only for their WiFi devices

#

most of the time devices with their own proprietary integration can be operated simultaneously by the Homekit/Matter integration. for example, i have some Meross LED controllers that I joined to my WiFi network through the HomeKit integration, then I activated the Meross LAN custom integration and disabled the Homekit entity.

so it seems to me that my initial notion to pair them in HA with thread is pointless(?) previously i had a lot of connections drops for these devices, so i thought maybe thread is more steady.
but now i gather that by using it that way im gonna miss features from the app? (and also the connection wasn’t drastically better or anything…)

exactly what features would you miss from the app? the nanoleaf app in the 30 hours i used it (before chucking the bulbs back in the box to return them) did not impress me. home assistant already has its own Scenes concept

#

like i'll be honest, i have a very dim view on nanoleaf given that my bulbs took less than two days before they would not connect to my thread network anymore and one bulb refused to factory reset

i also had mostly rough time with my devices from them.
but i referred mainly to having effects available. (if i just control them as it is now from HA it’s only static color + brightness control …

my experience is only with their matter bulbs, i haven't tried the older homekit ones, but on these the "scenes" (animated effects) are only available via a proprietary api through the nanoleaf app. You can connect the matter bubls to HA and also use them via the Nanoleaf app simultaneously, though.

Scenes work for the Nanoleaf Wi-Fi devices through the Nanoleaf integration.

The Matter devices don't support Scenes over Matter, but this was a Matter limitation. Matter 1.4 will finally add Scene support, hopefully Nanoleaf updates their bulbs to support it.

I watched Nanoleaf's September livestream, they stated once Matter supports Scenes they are committed to supporting it as well.
