#Extending Zigbee Range

I have several Aqara TRVs throughout my house, including two in my office. From my office, my HA box (a Pi 4 or 5, I forget which) with the Sonoff Zigbee 3 thing can se the two in my office, but none of the TRVs that are downstairs.

My understanding is that I need some devices that can act as "Zigbee hub". Is this correct? I'm hoping there are some light fixtures / bulbs or light switches that can act as hubs.

Thanks!

You have one hub or coordinator in the entire mesh. Certain devices can act as repeaters— typically this is any device that receives mains power with the exception of some zigbee bulbs.

So most zigbee light switch, plug in or wired outlets should work as repeaters.

Usually called routers. Repeaters are router only devices. I find them quite useless for most people.
Note that neutral only devices like some light switches or modules tend do not act as routers.

Perfect, I'll get some Aqara Smart Plugs; I've been very happy with Aqara.

Next questoin is slightly harder: I have a barn that's 70m away. What's the best way to get devices over there? Should I just set up another Pi with HA in the barn, and then is there a way to have one HA instance control another?

ZWave LR (Long Range) is supposed to be able to cover that distance, might look into that.

I'm game for anything, but I don't want two HA instances to log into 😛

That's my understanding, but I don't know 100%.

I guess maybe a second HA instance might be the only good option. :/

#

Or wifi devices, I do have ethernet running to the barn.

You could have a Pi running a separate zigbee network with zigbee2mqtt
that would report back to your main HA

I'd recommend a ethernet coordinator instead of a pi and a coordinator.

I've never heard of an ethernet coordinator

#

That sounds interesting. Any recommendations?

My recommendation would be SLZB-06/SLZB-06M. I use the former with Zigbee2MQTT.

Thanks!

I think that will be perfect for me.

it definitely works with 800 series

I have a jump to my other building, and with 3 devices on the outside wall of the house, and 3 on the facing wall of the garage, it usually connects. Might want to add this BC a switch went bad that was tasmota, might do this...

#

I have a 500 series aeotec

I want to say my old coordinator was 400 series. Took me a full day to migrate but it was worth it.

#

also moved to Zwave JS UI at the same time + updated all of the entity naming throughout

Well I pinned that in my browser...
