#How to get sections to fill full dashboard

hey friends,
I am building a dashboard on a large 4K screen. I'd prefer to use the new Sections layout. However, I'm struggling to get the dashbaord to use the full width of the resolution.

I've played with

  grid_columns: full
  grid_rows: auto

That causes the cards to grow in width, but the dashboard still won't take up more widith on the screen. It is like it is forced to only use the middle 33% of the screen.

How can I force sections to use the full width of the screen?

Hahaha that is likely going to go over my head personally, but lemme read and compare some things. GrimacingFluent I can probably help figure this out in the UI with you, give me a few while I read this, though. I can at least READ YAML. lul

thank you!

Okay so already I noticed one difference between my YAML for my Sections dashboard and yours.

I have a max_columns line but I don't seem to see one on yours?

rare lotus

There is a UX (and YAML) settings for width, but it still only uses that middle 1/3 of the screen

#

where do you have max_columns?

meager compass
#

Right at the top.

#

I dont see max_columns as part of sections, but it looks lit is part of the layout card

#

added max_columns: 4, no change

meager compass
#

Because of the way I have one of my sections set up, it doesn't do all 5 properly on desktop lol. But it does go all the way out...

#

That Space stuff section has a fixed width on the forecast, so it won't move up dynamically into the single column.

rare lotus
#

you can set each section to take up more space column_span: 2 but it just crowds the other sections out

meager compass
#

Is that what happens when you try to set it up that way?

#

And actually let me ask a clarifying question, too.

You want the cards to stay the same size but spread out across the screen, yes? That is what I am getting from this, but want to make sure I now know the goal.

rare lotus
#

actually... wait!

I was doing 4 "sections" ... apparently section and grid_columns: are synonyms ... if I double the grid_columns of each card, then they just push the other sections to the bottom. But if I double the "sections" to 8, then I end up with 4 double wide sections

interesting

AHA

#

One of the biggest pain points in HA is this - terminology. lul

#

That Dense setting should help, too?

thanks for the hand holding!

meager compass

Of course! I am absolutely new to all this but the dashboards stuff I am pretty aware of thanks to it being so new.

#

I would have had to drag people into this convo if it got too technical. Like I said, I can read the stuff, but cannot code. nervous

rare lotus

haha! I'm in a smiliar boat

Thanks for letting me flex some troubleshooting skills! I don't often do that anymore with community members. 😄

rare lotus

I feel the same way... I miss popping in to socialize and then helping troubleshoot wiht someone

meager compass
#

I just have much smarter guys around me who can help. 🫣

rare lotus

You’re on the dev team right?

meager compass
#

And this was for sure a longer convo that needed a few technical things back and forth.

I suppose having a special role would benefit me here, lol. I just manage the circus here and post on social. :3

It is quite fun! Just spent a whole week with Paulus and Franck, it was honestly amazing. BlushFluent

oh how cool!! I bet that was super energizing

meager compass

It really was! I started missing their company on my way to the airport. I am -8 GMT so I often don't get to talk with them that much.

this is all on the heels of my writing my first custom component ever! Super excited for it. This dashboard is for a team of about 300 high-level ski guides

THAT’S AWESOME! 🤩 Keep me updated on what they think, yeah??
