#Building a free smart home index to help newbies make better device choices

Greetings everyone! I wanted to share a free smart home device index/comparison resource I have been working on.

The link: https://smarthomeindex.com/

The purpose: I get a lot of beginner requests on a personal and business level from people new to home automation and jumping straight in at Home Assistant often leads to more confusion, when all they want to know is which camera/robot vac/light bulb they should pick (even though the answer is always one that works with HA 😏 ).
So, inspired by PC part picker, I have been working on the Smart Home Index, where I aim to catalog as many smart home automation & IoT devices as possible - making sure to identify their features and protocols. Amazon listings are littered with sponsored items and the product descriptions NEVER clearly list the features/specs/standards, making comparison for newbies almost impossible… then it is left to the family member who likes technology (me) to pick up the pieces and tell them that they bought the wrong thing.

What’s Next? The most time consuming part about building this has been populating devices, as you can see, that’s a work in progress. Until then, please feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions for ways to make the index better!

Other roadmap features include:
• Improved localization to make this an international tool (currently focused on making it work in my own country, 🇬🇧 )
Builds. Similar to PC part picker, have the option to put together a collection of devices for sharing.
• Home Assistant specific notes. Each device would ideally have a section containing caveats, links to guides or relevant github issues.

The ultimate goal is to push more people towards Home Assistant and expand their understanding of smart home technologies.

I'm brand new and I've been begging for something like this! Thank you so much!

ESPECIALLY THIS

Some of the links don't work for US costumers. If you're able to update that, I'd love to support your amazon referrals.

Hi folks, 2nd dev of the site here 👋
Thank you for your feedback so far, we're always open to more! As we add more and more devices we'll also be incorporating any feedback to make this the most useful resource possible 👌

@tribal pollen @elder meadow tried accessing but I get a "Forbidden" error.

This is a great initiative, tbh. If I had this when I started I wouldn't be stuck with a bunch of ZigBee devices who have spotty network and consistently drop from the mesh network.

I’ve been through a number of zigbee network revisions and my current and most reliable setup has been a sonoff dongle-e with zigbee2mqtt, then a number of strategically placed routers. Sadly not all powered devices are routers, because some manufacturers ignore the spec 😕
