#Recommendation on a DLNA NAS for music?

I am currently trying to get all my music available using DLNA so I can listen to that strange music that doesn't actually exist on spotify or other streaming services.
Right now I am trying to use the built-in mediaserver feature from our Fritz!Box router... but this seems to be pretty slow... the index is never done building... playlists are completely ignored.

Can anybody recommend a NAS with DLNA support that won't require a high invest?

Thx in advance

Not certain about pi, after indexing is done there's not much load other than crossfade and normalizing.

I’ll be on the lookout for a dedicated device then. Maybe a separate RPi (5) would be a good idea? Coupled with a standard USB 3.0 HDD maybe?

Would probably still be cheaper than getting a DLNA enabled NAS

From the documentation it seems like it’s fine to run the MA server alongside HA as long as the device has at least 4GB ram

I couldn’t figure out how to add files to the MA server the last time I tried…

Map the media drive and add to MA local index.

Added a samba server (running on pi3b) to the system. Besides a few crashes it all works pretty solid. Still trying to figure out how to start the DLNA client as daemon/service… but it seems they don’t have access to pulseaudio then

Okay, so, my final setup is this:

  • AudioCast M5 (costs below 30USD on aliexpress) which acts as a DLNA receiver. Was easy to setup and works way better then trying to get stable DLNA client on a raspberry pi zero
  • Alexa Echo 4 - Refurbished costs like 50 USD. It has line-in, which the AudioCast M5 goes into
  • Raspberry Pi 3B with external HDD and samba server
  • Music Assistant with connection to said samba server

I now have all my rare videogame soundtrack in my local net and can play it on all dlna receivers (so far its 2 alexa 4 and the Samsung - The Frame)

I am VERY VERY happy with this!

I really tried getting the dlna client to work on a raspberry pi zero... and it DOES work... but it crashes quite often... so I have to connect by ssh to the Pi and reboot it as it seems unable to reliably restart the pulseaudio service. Also, I cant run the DLNA client as service cause it has no access to the pulseaudio server that way... it's all very annoying. Those out-of-date AudioCast M5 are far more reliable and can also work with spotify streams... so, yeah, I'll settle with those for now. Only downside is that they need an app to get em connected to the network... even though they do have a WPS button. For the next one that will arrive I'll definetly try conencting it without the app
