I think you'd need to creat automation detects when phones are home or away and adjust the HVAC mode accordingly.

hvac_mode is to do with heat/cool/auto/off - not preset mode which is to do with eco/comfort/night etc
On top of that, the way better Thermostat implements this is slightly weird and instead you should use their services of "set eco temperature" and "reset heating point" to go in/out of eco mode
