Hi, I could use a little guidance to get me started on node red configuration, I am probably making it more difficult than it needs to be but this is where i am at. installed node red directly to proxmox node that is different than my home assistant. I can log in and all seems well. I then proceeded to install node red companion in home assistant as i understood i needed that. I have created a api key but not sure how to put that in node-red and i don't get a node red tab in home assistant. can these be connected this way or should i just install node-red directly in home assistant?

Maybe it would be simpler to install the Node RED addon? You generally want to install your services inside CTs or VMs, not on the node. That makes no sense. Have you read the docs here?

i may have used the wrong term as to where its installed. its a virtual machine(container or whatever it's called in proxmox). i can log in to it but its completely seperate enity to home assistant. I did try to install node red directly into home assistant via an intergration but i could not get it to start.
VM or CT?
Node RED cannot be installed as an integration. Only as addon. Can you share a picture of your proxmox VE's sidebar?
#integrations-archived integrate Home Assistant with devices or services, or provide functionality within Home Assistant.
#add-ons-archived provide additional software or services, which an integration could possibility integrate with. Add-ons are for Home Assistant OS and Supervised only, other install methods can install software other ways.
An add-on is a Docker container with tweaks to allow it to be configured in the Supervisor UI. It is only available in Home Assistant Operating System and Home Assistant Supervised (#installation-archived) since if you've used any other installation method, you can install software already.
Hi. Sorry I missed these…. Yes I tried the node red add on directly in home assistant and it would not start. I also tried the node red add-on thing that sounded like what I needed for connection to an external install of node red. Pic coming in next comment
Have you checked the addon log?
No
Currently neither the node red companion intergration nor the node red add on are installed. I’ll do the add on right quick and report back
I got the version in home assistant working! As soon as I went to look for the log file I saw the configuration tab! I edited it in yaml and saved and voila!

No problem. I just led you to the right place. You did the work. But please read this for the future: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org/
