#Matter bulbs not reconnecting when they drop

I have 5 matter lightbulbs from sengled and every few hours, one of them drops connection and refuses to reconnect through anything that I do in software. The only way I've been able to get them to successfully reconnect is to turn off and on the power to the lights which are disconnected. Even restarting home assistant as a whole doesn't do anything.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get these to either reconnect automatically or avoid disconnecting in the first place? And if not, does anybody have advice on RGB zigbee bulbs that aren't super expensive philips hue?

Extra info:

  • Running home assistant as a linux OS inside virtualbox
  • Have a zigbee 3.0 plus-E dongle which I was hoping to use, but purchased the wrong bulbs. If connectivity can't be fixed, I'll probably just return them and get zigbee bulbs but RGB zigbee bulbs are apparently hard to find for a reasonable price.

Are these Matter over WiFi? Or Matter over Thread?

matter over wifi

I'm not familiar with thread, is that something that might be more stable?

Fundamentally this sounds like an issue in the bulb firmware, but you could try a few things like changing which channel your 2.4ghz wifi on to see if the bulb can maintain a connection better.

IKEA does have some cheaper color spectrum zigbee bulbs, but depending on what you want them for, the colors might be disappointing compared to philips (the IKEA bulbs I have can't really do saturated cyan/green)

Thread is a different low power mesh network that's similar to what zigbee uses (many recent zigbee dongles that work with HA can be switched to do thread via a firmware update). Matter over thread is still a fairly new protocol, so there's not many bulb options available. I have some Nanoleaf Essentials products and they work pretty well (they used to have some firmware issues causing connectivity problems with HA, but those have been fixed)

ugh, I just bought another set of sengled lights that were supposed to be zigbee compatible but turns out they're E21-N1EA instead of E11-N1EA, which means they only work with deconz and not ZHA! Amazon listing doesn't provide the exact model number so it's always a toss-up. Wonderful

#

I see some information saying that deconz should work with a zigbee 3.0 plus-e dongle but I am having trouble getting that to work. All the setup seems to be hardcoded to either a conbee or phoscon dongle

Well I tried to pair and it didn't work

Any Zigbee device, regardless of support, will at least join the network and show up in ZHA. If it doesn't, the device hasn't been fully reset

I toggled power to the light 10 times and it blinked, that should be factory reset/pairing mode. No luck

yooo I tried it again today and it worked 🤦

huh, these start responding much faster but then they take longer to get to where they're going. They tend to shoot off to the wrong value first and then correct. Then while the brightness does a slow transition, the color does an instant transition. Setting transition speed to 0 doesn't seem to change it. Makes for a very difficult to use UX with a dimmer knob
