#Unable to connect Nanoleaf Essentials bulb to Home Assistant

So I have successfully paired an Essentials bulb via Thread to a Nanoleaf Lines border router, and everything (including an OTBR instance) is in the same preferred network. Using an iPhone to try to put everything together, I added a HomeKit Bridge integration to my HA instance and successfully set it up. I also sent credentials to my phone via the companion app for good measure. Yet, if I try to add the Essentials bulb to a Matter ecosystem via the Nanoleaf app, I'm shown a pop up that says "Home hub required."

I already have the HomeKit bridge registered in the Apple Home app - what am I missing?

Thread is not the same as Matter.

Is that bulb a Matter Essentials or a homekit one ?

OK, I got confused by the Homekit bridge integration then...

You don't need any of that. All that is required is that your iPhone knows the credentials of your thread network. Something that is now already done by the nanoleaf app, which added the crdentials of the thread network it created to your ios keychain.

So to add the Matter device to HA you need to use the HA flow.
Go to Settings --> Integrations --> click add --> choose matter device
At this point the device must be in pairing mode. So you may need to either unplug it from power and restore it or maybe even factory reset it.
Scan the QR code - it should now be added.

I don't know why I didn't try this.

I spent too much time trying to figure this out for it to be so simple.

I needed to factory reset the bulb and manually enter the code (QR code wouldn't scan), but it picked the bulb up.

Yeah, with Matter the idea is that you add a device to the ecosystem directly. and from there you can add it to other controllers as well if you want. So in this example you can share it again from HA to add it to apple home for example.

In case of Nanoleaf you can now choose to also add it to their app
