Hi all,

After waiting for three months and dealing with a customs issue that could have been avoided if Seeed had properly declared VAT (which took the price from around $35 to $70!), I finally received my Seeed ReSpeaker Lite module. However, the unboxing experience left much to be desired.

First off, the package comes with no user manual, no instructions—nothing. You’re left to figure out how to mount the thing on your own. They don’t even include screws for mounting the speaker, which is a basic necessity.

The second issue I faced was with their online documentation, which is quite difficult to follow. To get started, you need to use the ReSpeaker’s USB-C port to flash it, then unplug it, connect it to the soldered ESP, add it to ESPHome, and then—yes—unplug it again and reconnect it to the ReSpeaker. No clear instructions for this confusing process. After spending hours figuring this out, I’m left with a device that isn’t even properly mounted and am getting constant errors in the ESP logs:

[13:37:55][V][api.connection:1530]: Cannot send message because of TCP buffer space
[13:37:55][VV][api.service:482]: send_voice_assistant_audio: VoiceAssistantAudio {
  data: '

To add to the frustration, I’ve been trying to reach out to Seeed for 24 hours now, and while their team is visibly online, no one has taken the time to respond to my queries.

As a final note, I also asked for a coupon to cover the customs fees ($29.2) that I had to pay due to their VAT declaration mishap, but I haven’t received a reply on that front either.

Red flag, folks. Let’s see if they become more responsive, but based on my experience so far, be cautious before buying anything from them.

I hope this will be sorted out soon, but I have top say my first impression about their product quality and lever of service is quite poor.

update : Seeed refused to offer me a coupon. But in exhcnage of a positive review, they will offer me a 5$ coupon. So this is just a way to get false positive feedback.

not a great start for you 🤬 hopefully someone else with the device may be able to help. unfortunatley I haven't got one as yet. There is a thread here https://discordapp.com/channels/429907082951524364/1288913842709069935 that may offer some info and i'm sure if you post a message the guys might be able to help get you up and running at least. Hope you get it sorted 👍

their (CEO?) seem to have jumped on the issue and assigned a support member to this topic. Lets see how it goes. The most frustrating part is I've had to pay double the price for this device which, lets face it, doesn't feel as premium as a 70$ unit you'd buy from one of the voice assistants main players (and yes, I know these are the ones I'm trying to get rid of).

Totally understand your frustration. I would be livid! especially as it was out of your hands... Lets hope they do something to rectify THEIR mistake!

Hey. IDK if your package was different, but I got 2 (kits), and all screws were there. Also the instructions on assembly were online, by QR code.
Yes, I had a bit of struggle to flash it at first. But it's always the case with new product, especially Seeed. They're not really support-friendly. 🙂
Right now I have 2 working satellites. They're MUCH better than my self-made, and way better than S3 Box or Wyoming.

Hey 👋,
Has anyone tried on-device wake word for this? Its a variant of ESP32S3 with 8MB Falsh and 8 MB PSRAM. So would it work?

I'm in touch with them, I just got the mount instructions (I still hve to have a look ath them) and they ask for my ESP logs.

#

and yes I'm in EU (Belgium)

by the way here are my current logs

#

I can't get it to work as I'm getting a shitton of these buffer errors as soon I start the board

#

but if you say the wakeword won't work, how do you actually use it ???

what is your config ? can you also paste that

Guys, make sure you flash XMOS board itself with ffva_i2s_v1.0.5.bin first. It might come with 2.0.5 ua software, which is dedicated for USB work and doesn't work with ESP32 variant.

ok.. sure.. I was thinking of making a video on it. But since the home assistant official one is coming (assuming) by year-end, I am not sure if I should create a video on this one. I don't want people to buy something temporary for few months and spend like 70$ on it. Rather spend it on something that is good once in for all. Or else the DIY solution I have shown in my video is good enough.
The only advantage of this one is the dual microphone, which would make it better for capturing audio.

thanks for jumping in @floral warren 🙂

I will check the FW version I flashed, but I did follow Seeed's documentation, so I would assume they pointed me to the right firmware....

#

once connected to the computer, it displays as a sound device. so I guess this part of the job is done

vagrant coral
#

but, @floral warren , I can't find the link to your YAML

#

sorry I found your yaml it's fine, i'll try to merge it with my own yaml, and see if I can get the mi to detect the wakeword at least

floral warren
#

Curious why it displays as sound device on your PC... It shouldn't do it, if you have I2S firmware. UA firmware is built for PC/Mac, I2S - for ESP.

vagrant coral
#

well, I did not reconnect it since I re-flashed it, I'm trying to get it understand what I'm saying no, wirelessly.

#

I can't say it's convincing so far

#

I wonder where improvements are needed, is it the microphone not recording a clear enough sample, or is it vosk that do not perform as it should... mystery

vagrant coral
#

it worked before I restarted HA (ESPHome runs as an addon) , I got to check out why it isn't working anymore...

#

I've made them update their documentation by the way...

#

avoiding people to flash the wrong FW

#

it was pretty easy to not catche the little difference between 1.0.5 and 2.0.5 in the line

I just order this kit (respeaker lite) from AliExpress because the Seeed website shows it's on backorder until end of November and that's only for the CN warehouse and I didn't want to deal with the custom's issue OP dealt with. AliExpress claims I'll receive it by Nov 2nd.

Just updated repo.

New things:

  • Fixed stop-word behaviour
  • Fixed loud noise on OTA/software restart
  • Fixed random mute turn on on restart. Now it will be unmuted after restart

**Decided not to expose speaker mute hardware switch to the HA, since it would require sync with media_player state

Hi all, I have recently started dabbling with the respeaker-lite and I am stuck at the basic step of updating the firmware. By default it has the usb firmware version 2.0.5. The dfu-util -l command does recognise it, and when I flash the firmware everything is a success and even the bytes downloaded are shown. But then nothing - when I check again it is still the same old firmware. I even tried flashing the I2S firmware, exact same result. All the steps complete successfully but no change, its stuck at v2.0.5. any help will be appreciated, thanks! Just to add I have tried in Mac and Pi OS both and used sudo in Pi OS.

Ok, so it worked when I downloaded by clicking the "Raw" button. Perfect mate, thanks!

after leaving the respeaker lite for several weeks on a shelve, I'm back here askibng me if things improved. What is latest FW to flash on it ? @floral warren ?

#

I also wanted to figure out a way to make it keep listening to stuff, as saying "ok nabu" all the time wasn't really natural
