Probably - I’ve considered using mine like that but…
It is heavy.
It uses a lot of power.
It there fore needs to be charged regularly etc.
And keeping it plugged in is very bad long term.
So i think best is to go with some e-ink solution
Ty
Also note I’m not sure it can be a hub in apple home like the Apple homepod mini mini can.
I’m considering buying one (despite being deaf… 😩) just for that.
Oh goodness. I think it'll be great for wall display using it like Alexa shape 8
Just watch for the battery swelling. I am not exaggerating when i say that these are not designed to be plugged in all the time.
Really? What about Samsung devices? Or the pixel tablet?
Similar problems with the battery
Batteries in general don’t like to be recharged multiple times a day every day for years, especially if they are always plugged in
And this is why e-ink is so good: it does not need power to display the screen. Only to change it.
hmm ok ty!
Apple removed iPads from being hubs in HomeKit a while ago…
That explains it 😫
A downside of Apple devices is they stop getting iOS updates at some point. And eventually they’ll be unable to display your dashboard at all and you’ll have a useless iPad attached to your wall. Ask me how I know…
SAME. iPad mini (1st gen) == e-waste now.
After like 6-8 years. But yes.
That bit is annoying. 😦
They get supported waaaay longer than the android devices do.
But when they drop support, they become very useless.
That said. Safari will still work, and http will still work.
Not really. A minimum version of WebKit is needed.
The browsers won’t get updates and can’t display any of the new JavaScript that the dashboards use. And so what gets rendered is nothing but an error in the middle of the screen.
Could render it to a PDF or something, I mean, I'm thinking of how e-ink displays get used.
You can still render /something/, and you can still use that. It just sucks.
Not really. You’d have to do some complex version checking of the browser to determine capabilities and such and then try to render the best it can. Plus, it would stifle a lot of where HA is going. With that said, one could always write their own “old style” UI and use the REST API to query HA.
I mean, you could render a PDF, and send that
Or a png.
I wouldn’t bother getting the HA display to fully support the ancient safari.
I’m still learning Home Assistant. Does anybody know if it works with Apple calendar and reminders?
