Can someone recommend a USB powered smart switch/button (doesn't need to be battery powered) that doesn't require wiring, and uses WIFI, I will be using it to trigger home assistant automations, I do not have a zigbee or zwave dongle, only wifi. Prefer a button over an actual switch because this automation can also be triggered with software and it means the off and on positions would often swap if it was a physical switch

The only device I've heard of that matches your description and is currently available is the "Shelly Button 1" https://www.shelly.com/en/products/shop/shelly-button-1-white
The other alternative would be to DIY something - an ESP32 dev board with a switch, using ESPHome, shouldn't be that hard to set up.
Chat gpt recommend me that but I'm not sure how well it works with home assistant, I'll check it out
Strange how it is so hard to find one, what do most people do with smart lights?
Do they use their voice every time or use their phone
shelly stuff is very solid with home assistant
either hardwired smart switches, or battery powered buttons/switches using low power radio protocols like zigbee/z-wave are common
I personally use mostly zigbee remotes from ikea :)
a custom esp32 button would be really easy to make. then you could use any type of button you want
I have a rpi pico
But I can't make a case for it
I made it trigger a webhook when I touch the pins but it's not a good solution
Not because of the webhook that's fine but because of the way of triggering it
By touching the small pins, and it's all exposed
Looks bad
run a wire from the pins to a big button somewhere
If there is a good ZigBee solution for this I'd be open to it at this point, because I might just buy the dongle (home assistant is running on an rpi4 btw)
Then I can add any ZigBee device
Might be worth it
currently out of stock but the LocalDeck is pretty cool if you want a load of buttons
yeah, lots of good options for zigbee - the concern there is that zigbee's range isn't very good, so if the switch is going to be far away from your HA box you'll either need some hardwired devices that work as repeaters (most smart plugs and smart bulbs do) or a ethernet connected zigbee coordinator that can be placed away from the HA box.
On Amazon the Shelly button 1 is 28.50 pound, I might as well buy a ZigBee dongle and a cheaper ZigBee button
It's in the same room
About maximum 4m from the rpi
you could also get something like this - https://thepihut.com/products/atom-lite-esp32-development-kit
esp32 in a case with a button on it.
The Pi Hut
This tiny IoT development kit, is ideal for making embedded smart home devices and smart toys. At only 24 x 24mm, it's great for fitting into projects where space is at a premium! has some other stuff you can mess with too
Thanks a lot for the recommendations btw
Shelly also make the "i4 DC" which you can connect four buttons to

BYO case, buttons, and power supply
Zigbee buttons are great. you end up with a bunch of options for them. There's the cheap ikea ones (about £5 or £6 depending on which one you get.) or some other random ones from other companies. And if you get zigbee in, you then have the option to add other zigbee stuff, like bulbs and sensors. (battery powered sensors pretty much need to be zigbee or zwave)
