#HA stops working repeatedly

Hi, I would like to ask for advice on HA. It happens to me (I don't know why, I didn't make any connections when it would do this) that the whole HA freezes - all services stop being accessible - web, ssh, mqtt etc (only sometimes PING goes and sometimes not even that). The only thing that helps is a physical reboot.

It does this irregularly and at different intervals - sometimes it does it the next day; other times it runs for a month just fine.

HA runs on an RPi4 8GB RAM, external SSD drive connected via USB, powered by the official PoE hat.

I couldn't even find any logs to tell what's wrong 🥲

(the yellow tag is chosen only to send the message; otherwise I couldn't...)

So I would like to ask for help here.

Thanks a lot :TomSrdicko: :TomSrdicko:

Might be a memory leak, although I'd expect this to behave different. Install the glances addon and check the memory usage.
I'd recommend plugging in keyboard and monitor and let us know when it happens again so we can troubleshoot.
Is the SSD connected with a powered USB HUB?

Hi @uncut prism,
Is the SSD also powered by the POE? I don't know the current rating on it but is a possible source of instability if it's pulling power the hat was not designed to provide.

We've seen the pi's USB ports being unreliable in powering things. Not sure why exactly.

Maybe. I don't own a pi but I heard this a few times.

So I connected an external power transformer to the SSD disk, unfortunately it didn't help, today it's dead again 🥲🥲

Are you using Alexa Media Player by chance?

i've just started experiencing this

#

not on yellow, I'm on a pi 4b

#

all services just randomly stop dead, power cycling the pi gets it back up and running

#

first time it's every happened today: and it's now happened for the second time

no, i'm a google household!

If the SSD is attached via USB and not on a seperate power supply or powered USB hub, that might be a power issue.

In that case it might be a failing SD card.

#

it's been less than a year and its high endurance

#

power could be an issue, its not a genuine rpi one

#

its a 15w though

#

15w is the right spec for rpis right?

shadow heath
#

Yes. But this seems to be a different issue. Please create a post in #1284966540617449515 with the details and diagnostic steps you already did.

But it keeps dying.

I believe that when HA is running, even if you pull the SSD it still continues to run as everything it needs to run is preloaded into RAM.
If you try that (your risk), and then see if HA still dies after a while, then you've at least ruled out the SSD as the culprit.
