#Switching from SmartThings to HA hardware questions

Hello,

My Smartthings Hub recently died so I need to look at my other options.

Longtime Android user switching to iPhone in a few days

I have many Zigbee and Zwave devices connected in Smartthings

I also have several Google Nest Cameras/doorbells (with Nest Aware subscription)

Looking to get things working with Homekit as our entire family will be on IOS.
My understanding is that The HA Green doesn't have Zigbee support, and that I'd have to buy the Connect ZBT device for my Zigbee devices.

Does Home Assistant Green come with built in Z-wave support or do I have to buy another dongle?

Will I need Starling Home Hub to get access to Nest devices in Homekit?

If I need all these devices, will Green even be able to support all of them?

If the Smartthings hub is dead, will I still be able to populate all the devices when setting up Home Assistant, or does the Smartthings Hub have to be active? I was hoping I could just login to my Smartthings account and migrate things over.

Sorry for all the questions. I hope you guys can help me get on the right track.

Yes, two dongles, on USB extension cables

There's no migration path as such - remove them from ST, add them to HA

Can I remove them from SmartThings online, since the Hub is completely dead? I have logged into the IDE before

#

Or are you saying I have to find the exclusion instructions for every single item and then add to to HA?

scarlet oak
#

Well, all the Z-Wave and Zigbee devices will be reset to pair them to HA... so ... don't worry

#

You can exclude the Z-Wave devices using HA too

Given that I need both Zwave and Zigbee support, would you still recommend HA green with the 2 USB dongles (on extentions) versus the HA yellow?

scarlet oak
#

Yes

#

The Yellow is a Pi at heart, and those aren't great

#

I'd recommend a small form factor PC over the Green any day

fiery matrix
#

Is that what they call NUC?

And it ends up being a set and forget allways on PC?

scarlet oak
#

NUC is one form of an SFF PC

I know zigbee/zwave has its own channel, but is the most common item the Connnect ZBT-1 and the ZOOZ 700/800 series?

scarlet oak
#

For the Z-Wave the common one is regional, no idea

#

For Zigbee the recommendation are SMLight or Tube, but the ZBT-1 is fine

fiery matrix
#

I'm fine getting a mini PC to do this and loading HA on that, but is it a lot more difficult that just using the HA Green?

scarlet oak
#

No

#

As long as you get one with UEFI (and otherwise meets the requirements) it's easy

fiery matrix
#

Have any recommendation? I'm sure there are a ton of RAM/GPA/CPU options

scarlet oak
#

eBay should be a good source of Dell/HP/whatever

#

Or buy a new Beelink etc

scarlet oak
#

My HA runs on a Ryzen based Beelink, so it can also run Frigate and more

#

You can't go wrong there

fiery matrix
#

So that, plus the dongles and extention cables, and then find the install directions on HA's website, and I'm on my way

#

Since the Green only does ethernet, would there be any benefit of using the wifi on the Beelink, if I can easily just plug it into the router nearby?

scarlet oak
#

Wired > WiFi

#

Keep WiFi for mobile devices, not servers

Thanks

#

Is 8GB RAM 256GB storage worth it for $143 compared to 16GB 512GB storage for $170

scarlet oak
#

Depends on what else you want to run on it

#

Personally go fo the 16 GB

fiery matrix
#

ok

#

I am switching to iPhone so I will need to integrate with Homekit

#

I don't assume that would matter much on a hardware level
