Couldn't you just replace home-assistant-cloud entirely if you integrated Wireguard into the app? I don't understand what value it provides at all

It provides access without tinkering with DynDNS and without port forwarding. It also provides easier setup skills for Google Home or Alexa.
Additionally you get access to better voices for TTS. And it supports the development of HA financially.

There is also a speech to text service for Assist. Running that locally can be quite hardware intensive.
