#Automating a bathroom fan

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you had any ideas on how I could automate this fan. The outlet does not have a ground and is tight so a smart plug wouldn't work. Would my best option be wiring in something like the SONOFF 10A Switch? I would prefer a Zigbee solution if possible.

Do you have physical swoitch for it? could you put something like ZBMINI behind that switch, and call it a day? I do it like this.

Wait, it's the same switch? Bummer.

Every time you turn the wall switch off, your device will go unavailable and you also will lose the ability to turn the fan on.

If you want separate control, you will have to get unswitched power to the fan

That way the switch can always be on and the fan won't be dependent on the lights

Are you opposed to changing the light switch? You could put in a smart switch that supports smart bulb mode, which means it doesn’t actually turn power on or off, instead it will just send a Zigbee or zwave command to the smart bulb (or controller) to turn off the light. Zooz and Innovelli (among many others) sell switches with this feature.

So you would still have to replace your bulbs with smart bulbs, but you wouldn’t have to rely on a presence sensor for on/off control

Yes you’d still have to wire up the sonoff switch (or any other smart relay) for the fan. Replace the bulbs with smart bulbs. Replace the wall switch with a smart switch that supports smart bulb mode. Then you’re just left with configuring everything to function how you want.

I'd still think of wiring the fan separately. It might be costly, but think about always-powered circuit in area of high humidity, and all troubles that it can bring, while you're not there...
