General title, first question. I found an old Asus EeePC 1000HE Laptop in a drawer - is it a bad idea to try HA on it? It's about 15 years old...
The alternative is to buy a refurbished thinkcentre m910q tiny...
Located in Germany, as cheap as possible, as reliable as possible, start with zigbee shutters and lights.

I'd prefer the USFF machine. The other one seems to be below the recommended specs.

The Asus you listed is 32 bit I believe. You need 64 bit for HA these days I believe.

If you're just looking for something cheap and reliable for basic automation like lighting control I wouldn't overlook the humble raspberry pi if they're available to you.

🤷‍♂️ they've worked for me for a long time

Yes, the micro PCs like Intel NUCs and Lenovo ThinkCentres and Dell Optiplex micro's are really nice for more expansion if you want to add a security system, but you pay quite a bit for it.

The first things we usually ask when someone has a issue and say they have a pi are

  • Do you use a SD Card?
  • If you don't, do you use a powered HUB for your external storage?
  • Do you use a proper PSU?
    which paints a picture.

My point was just to keep the OP's goal in mind and not trying to apply a one size fits all approach

"you pay quite a bit for it"
There's always second-hand...

Used Lenovo thinkcentre etc available for under $100 with 6th or 7th gen cpu, 16gb ram, ssd

Precisely, which is why “generic x86” may be showing up smaller
