I was messing with adding a zwave hub so maybe that had something to do with it - but doesn't explain why backups from before I was doing that also wouldn't load

Any way to reinstall hass as a new install then try a backup
When I sacrificed my x1, I created a brand new VM then once it was up and running, added the Google drive back up add on, then restored a backup

the backups that HASS makes are in the image that is borked - so not sure how I'd access the files. I might look later at spinning that up as a new vm and then seeing if i can somehow access the file system there. Lesson learned though - locate my backups outside the container image, or copy them there.
I've been trying to avoid cloud stuff - it's not that I'm paranoid - just trying to see if I can make this as self sufficient a system as possible - matter direct control, etc.
