Plug the USB devices into a powered USB hub
99.999% likely you've hit a power problem, which is common on the Pi
Oh wow really? That’s kinda annoying but i may have to try that
The Pi is well known for having power, and SD card, problems
Maybe the Pi5 won't be as bad, but probably it will be
well I’ve been running on it for years now without issue
But I did run into the SD card failure recently
So I switched to a usb solid state
That's not helping
The Pi3 has very limited power for the USB ports, and you've blown well past that limit
Powered USB hub FTW
That was my next question, is this kind of problem remedies on newer Pi’s (sounds like maybe not?)
Try moving off of educational toys to proper hardware 😉
A second hand small form factor PC, of the kind regularly suggested in #hardware-archived, is not much differently priced to a Pi4/5 with SSD, and far better
Really? I’ll have to dig up some of those recommendations
You don’t recommend one of the HA blue or yellow machines?
Green, maybe
I know there were supply problems with the Blue at one point
But still, for the same kind of money you can get much better hardware
Feel free to say no and I’ll dig for myself, but can you recommend one or two specific machines for me to check out? I’m a software engineer by trade but never really been a big hardware geek…
Honestly, check the history of #hardware-archived - Dell and HP boxes turn up a lot
Okay
Your options will be influenced by your country
I bought a BeeLink, new, with a Ryzen 5 in it
Overkill for just HA, but perfect for Frigate and everything else
Gotcha. Okay thanks for these tips. Leaving work now and will grab a powered hub from best buy on my way home. Hoping that gets by HA back up and running while I research one of these longer term solutions. I greatly appreciate your time and input 🙏🏾
Can images not be posted in here?
It’s pretty much doing the same thing with the hub…
Here’s what my screens are showing https://postimg.cc/gallery/r8W3jGw
Both plugged into a power strip
Do you suspect one or both isn’t getting proper power?
Right, but how are they powered, what power sources for each?
Hopefully not just plugged into a USB port on the strip?
No they both have their own power supply things. Ac adapters I think they’re called?
lol you mean details about the power supply?
Yes
Well one is a 5V 2.5A Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Power Supply I got off Amazon
Ok, so probably that's ok, though it may no longer be ok. There's a history of those things - particularly the unofficial ones or knock offs - degrading over time
The USB power adapter is 5V/4A
Try swapping them over, if you can, maybe they'll work better that way
Swapping?
Oh no they have different connectors. The pi is a micro USB and the usb hub is um
I forget what it’s called
Different 😛
lol yes
Oh you know what
I do have the pi power supply plugged into a smart plug
Reason being, sometimes my HA would just crap out and the only way to fix it was to power cycle it. Well super annoying when I wasn’t near it so I put it on a Kasa WiFi plug so I could power cycle it remotely
Which has worked well for several months
It what’s also strange is that this is only a problem with my zooz zwave dongle. If I unplug that, it starts up. I also have a zigbee usb dongle that works fine
So could it be that the zwave usb stick is corrupted?
Doubt it, it really does sound like a power problem
Hmm
Pi's and power problems go hand in hand like bacon and everything
I’m going to try removing the smart plug shortly
Nah it does the same thing even without the smart plug
Found that there seems to be a somewhat widespread issue with OS 12.3 https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/issues/3362
