have you been doing it long?
I mostly learn things when I need them for something. I'm not quite sure when was the first time I programmed something. There's always time gaps with stuff I do. My interests rotate and switch frequently.
Yeah I don't learn anything unless I need to do something too
lol
but you get paid to do something on computers?
No, just a hobby.
ah okay
Let't keep the chit chat here and the HA related stuff in #general-archived .
Currently a 5950x.
I kept my last PC for > 8 years. I wanted to do the same so I just built the fastest PC I could afford. I actually kept my old case.
I don't recommend AM4 for "small" servers. The power consumption in idle is too high for my liking.
im not used to dischord
There are better CPUs for gaming but it's one of the fastest AM4 ones for general purpose computing.
built the fastest pc you could afford... referring to your current am4 build?
oh no my am4 build will/would be for my "daily driver"
then I'll take the one I have now (4th gen intel) and use THIS for the server-type-thing
yeah it's just the 4th gen ryzens you wanna stay away form right?
I can only again recommend to virtualize. You don't need thirty servers each for a different purpose.
I was looking at the 4500 due to price... then saw a ton of bad reviews
right yeah you don't want/need a bunch of devices
I'd buy one which has PCIe 4 support.
the computer I'm on now can absolutely handle all of this stuff running in VM/containers
hmmmm ok
you're talking about the cpu and mobo right?
pcie 4 support for both
my plan is to end up using this am4 build for at least 5 years minimum...
Mostly so you can have PCIe 4 SSDs. Some newer GPUs also only have 8 physical lanes so PCIe 4 can help. There should be some benchmarks about PCIe 3 x8 vs PCIe4 x8.
when I upgrade to a new mobo after that depends on if I end up finding a job that pays decently
I'm thinking of getting a b550 board.. I don't want to buy another am4 board in the future
and just getting a dirt cheap am4 cpu right now... upgrading it in the future
i need to spend as little as possible
You can filter for stuff you need here: https://skinflint.co.uk/?cat=mbam4
I built two AM4 systems with these:
cool lemme take a look I've never seent aht site
so you went with a b550 then... cool
You can search and compare CPUs here: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/CPU_mega_page.html
brb i need some water and food
All you get when you filter for ones which have a PCIe 4 NVMe slot: https://skinflint.co.uk/?cat=mbam4&xf=18947_1
You don't really need this though.
What to pick depends a lot on the other components.
I like it a lot because you can compare stuff, wish list, alert prices, price history, filtering, find the cheapest shop for buying multiple things. It's awesome.
mmm that is useful.
so many options. I need to understand the importance of all the variables better..
vrm, pcie etc
What's your budget, what do you want to use the PC for?
You can also just filter by price and sort by popularity. Then check reviews for the board.
it'll just be a general purpose ... web browsing, some games... I want to try to play with ai a bit at some point but that could be done on another computer when I have more money
yeah. I think I"mm just going to get a very cheap b550
i found some for like 50 bucks...
so.. i'm gunna try to keep the whole thing at only about 100... for the cpu and mobo... just buy off eBay
and/or amazon warehouse
AM4 lends itself well to buying used as it's older.
The site is just so you can compare and pick something that fits your needs. Where or how you buy doesn't really matter.
