hey mate,
I can't speak to exact numbers publicly, but the Nabu sponsorship is still our main revenue source.
I think we're coming up to month three of ads being on the podcast, and the revenue from those has been less than ideal. Based on initial projects and download numbers, we were hoping for a lot more to re-invest, but its not looking like the ad-rev gods are looking nicely on us.
I blocked the adult orientated ads, and last episode had an ad up-front instead of sandwiched in the middle, both of which greatly reduced the $$$. Unfortunately the nature of podcast advertising makes it hard for programatic ads to target you better than a state/country level geocode.
We're considering scrapping the ads altogether, and perhaps having early releases/extra long episodes for patreon supporters (which thanks to the ads - we've now had some people put money behind who we want to keep adding value for).
Perhaps we need to diversify the content or do something different to attract more listeners (or even advertise a bit more?). Not sure what the missing ingredient is at the moment. @raven frigate and I still enjoy making these and think its a great way to get other peoples stories out there
I really appreciate the response! I don't know how long the patreon option has been set up. Have you considered trying to solicit people to pledge what they can/wish per episode? I know the Nabu Casa is the main mention at the top of each episode. Maybe a closing call for people to contribute would generate enough a percentage of supports to help bring extra cash?
I'd personally be inclined to throw a couple dollars the way of the show each episode. Maybe it's just psychology, but that sits better than a subscription for me. 😛
Yep not a bad idea. I do like the way Self Hosted use Bitcoin boosts to encourage people to tip and give shoutouts
I know it's possible to listen to the podcasts on Spotify, is that giving you any revenue worth mentioning?
What I mean is, if I was to recommend someone listen to you which service would give you more $$ or is the difference negligible?
