The answer is ... everything you care about
What those are depends on your setup, and what you care about.
im just not sure in linux where most of that is, other than of course the home directory
Me, everything that matters goes under /data, so pretty much all of that gets backed up
Outside of that is just the OS and OS config (/etc and bits of /var) - and for me the OS is disposable since everything is in Docker
ok so for me it sounds like its probably going to be
/home
/etc
/var
you mentioned "bits of /var". Could you expand on that a little more for me?
also in my home directory are my vbox drives, which i guess i should exclude from the backup
how do i find where my config files are located for docker
/var/db
/var/lib
``` those are the two key ones
The Docker config is wherever you wrote your Compose files
Mine are in /data/docker
i use portainer so i write my compose files in there
No idea about that, but it should be findable via Google
ok thank you for the advice
https://blog.ceard.tech/2017/10/backing-up-home-assistant is something from a while back about how my backups worked then
Hasn't changed much beyond not really using Pi's any more
Im comfortable with the HA backups side of things. Have tested the backups and restores (stored off disk) and they are working.
but you are right with what you said earlier, i need to backup my host machine
https://fai-project.org/FAIme/ is what I use to automate installing the OS
Ok so i feel a little more at ease. All my important docker stuff is actually pointing to a mapped drive on my 6 bay NAS which in turn is backed up to AWS
