I assume you've got working remote access configured, so that the phones can reach HA when away from home?

If so then #android-archived and #ios_and_mac-archived can help you with the apps. If not then here can help you sort out remote access

No. I just got HA install on a NUC and then installed the HA app on the Android & iPhone.

There's many many many ways of doing that

Simplest is to pay for the Nabu Casa cloud service

Cheapest is to use DuckDNS (and LetsEncrypt) and some port forwarding

Right now, I'm just trying to get the phones to connect locally. The Android location connects but the iPhones doesn't.

Then #ios_and_mac-archived can help with the local connection - you'll not be able to use the homeassistant.local name though I suspect, use the IP (and port)
