I naively expected to get one hub to rule them all when getting SkyConnect, admittedly without much research about this part (but happy to contribute a little to Nabu Casa's business and projects)

strong cave
#

Yes, if they're within range of the coordinator

#

(though the Sonoff sensors are junk)

heavy gorge
#

interesting, so with the aqara it's right next to it

#

I just got an aqara hub anyway but wanted to avoid it ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

My SkyConnect is connected to a USB port (with the cable) that's mapped to the virtual machine where home assistant is

#

I don't think it makes any difference from one that's not virtualised, and SkyConnect is recognised with no issues at all, but when pairing (Aqara right next to the SkyConnect USB dongle) nothing is shown and I can't see logs or anything, tumbleweeds

strong cave
#

The SkyConnect is on the USB extension cable?

#

The Aqara is no closer than 50 cm?

heavy gorge
#

Hey @strong cave sorry I missed your msg, the Aqara is about a meter away but I can keep trying if it should work and yes the USB is on the extension cable

strong cave
#

As long as the device is in the final destination

heavy gorge
#

Well, it won't but I read Zigbee should work up to 100m in the end it'll be 20m apart (if it works)

strong cave
#

Well, point to point range is about 6 to 8 meters

heavy gorge
#

But I was defeated so I bought a 30EUR USB gateway from Aqara (the usb one)

strong cave
#

The odds of it working at 100 meters are ... zero

heavy gorge
#

Ah acknowledged

strong cave
#

The odds of it working at 20 meters are ... not good unless that's 20 meters of open air

heavy gorge
#

It's a glass in between

strong cave
#

That may work

heavy gorge
#

In any case, first i need to pair, then worry about range

strong cave
#

Well, no

#

You need to ensure it pairs in place

heavy gorge
#

Oh ok

strong cave
#

Because otherwise... you're just setting yourself up for pain and failure

heavy gorge
#

So, the Sonoff I paired it with an Echo 4 and it worked for 24h... maybe related to range...

#

It feels it's so much hit and miss but I'm still excited about the SkyConnect so I'll give it a shot tonight trying different distances

strong cave
#

Buying some (Zigbee) routers will help

heavy gorge
#

Ok, it works!

#

Thanks to this conversation I had more hope so not only you reset it but then you keep pushing the button a few times and after less than a minute SkyConnect picked it up

#

So I wonder now if I should return the Aqara hub or keep it to extend the network (it was 30EUR)

#

Like, could it extend SkyConnect's Zigbee network?

strong cave
#

Return it

heavy gorge
#

Ok

#

And now the Sonoff works, doing the same (reset and push the button a few times)

#

But it's so much slower and the range so much shorter

#

Aqara wins by a lot, it's instant, pretty incredible

strong cave
#

Sonoff's sensors are ... shite

heavy gorge
#

Yeah, but you know it's still useful, the Aqara by itself wouldn't reach the SkyConnect through a metal door, and now with the sonoff between the SkyConnect and the Aqara sensor the Aqara one works perfectly, so it seems the traffic passes through the Sonoff perfectly

strong cave
#

Their routers are mostly ok

heavy gorge
#

Cheap I hope at least

#

Anyway, lesson is Aqara is reliable and fast

strong cave
#

Well, cheap usually means ooops

#

Don't but Tuya ๐Ÿ˜‰

heavy gorge
#

And the sensor comes with a temperature sensor too, kind of random

#

Tuyas are good then?

strong cave
#

"Good"

heavy gorge
#

ok

strong cave
#

They're cheap for sure

#

And mostly utter crap, with the occasional awesome device
