#HA instances on Pi4B crashing across different storage media

Yesterday, I found my HA unresponsive. Restarted, failed to boot. Got two new power supplies (one PoE hat for the Pi4B, one a standalone), both worked to provide power but neither fixed the issue.

Checked the SD card next, and could not get any of its ext4 partitions to mount on any machine. Looks like the SD card died!

Bought a 2.5" SATA USB enclosure, formatted a new SD card as a USB bootloader, and flashed the Home Assistant pi image onto an old SSD I had laying around. New drive seemed fine until the HA instance suddenly dies, and I check the Pi video output to see a bunch of "read only filesystem errors." Maybe this SSD is also bad?

Swapped out the SSD for a different old SSD, same thing happens eventually -- server goes down, Pi console output full of the same errors.

Try a powered USB hub

At this point, I might as well just go build a NAS and network boot the dang thing

Or accept that the Pi sucks and try some proper hardware 😛

I'm open to hardware recommendations! What's your preferred platform for this?

#

I know I could run HA on a NAS but I'm a little skeptical

I run it currently on a 9 year old i5 laptop

#

I'll be switching to a Ryzen based mini-PC shortly - for no reason other than it has plenty of spare capacity

(the laptop will later get rebuilt and I may well migrate HA back to it)
