Hmm.. it seems it's either the the version of Debian I am running (I tried the Debian VM that my Hass.io is running under as well as another Debian VM, same Debian version, without Hass.io) or ESXi that is playing funny buggers with the USB passthrough.
I get a bunch of errors in my console/message logI attached the UPS to my Synology NAS and that worked just fine.
