Maybe you used to have a proxy server installed that handled SSL and listened on port 443?

HA only listens on one port, port 8123 unless you change that

In my test install yesterday I restored a partial backup, and there must have been an addon.

looong ago I had a proxy server on another machine to deal with that. Then when I consolidated I used...probably the nginx addon? I'll check my backup. It's most likely it. I feel super stupid now, but glad.
