Yup. np.
that UV thing would not last long, natural dust would collect and block that thing every few months
UV only works when it's emitted within the body anyway.
cheaper just to drink bleach
That could work, ya know. It has disinfectant properties.
Inject it
Fun fact human bodies emit visible light
And it changes with your circadian rhythm
yes, it does... it seems nitro access to be able to use emotes outside this server
That's an emoji from this server. Says so if you click it.
This emoji is from this server. Get Nitro to use it everywhere.
yeah, get a nitro, @green inlet π
just ran across a video of the Teqball World Championships
immediately thought of Baseketball
the YouTube algorithm got ahold of you too, eh?
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/wonder-woman-1984-heading-to-hbo-max-theaters-dec-25 awesome! Too bad HBO Max does not have 4k support yet π¦
does anyone have a link for a decent article or video explaining mqtt and how it relates to home automation? have read a lot of sites and I am feeling really dumb not getting what it is actually used for.
Think of it more as a messaging protocol - like SMS.
devices send messages to a broker, which then stores/forwards these messages to others (eg HA)
these messages can contain commands, status updates, values etc
So I kind of get the idea of it being a messaging protocol and not a communication standard i.e. wifi/zigbee.
yah
and oddly I can understand the technical idea of the broker and qos messages with multiple topics. Just not fully certain why/when I would use it in my smart home automation. Maybe I just don't have devices or scenes that require it?
ahh ok
so with HA, it can already push/poll the state of entities. what benefit do I get with integrating mqtt?
yeah perhaps - in my case I've got xiaomi/aqara sensors (via zigbee), weber igrill (via BT to raspi then MQTT), unraid server monitor
they all have their own initial communication protocols, but in the end spit out stuff to MQTT, which HA can then use
if you have devices that can only use MQTT, or need to use it as an intermediary
eg don't need it for say Hue, cause it's got an integration
so its for devices without integrations already created?
yep, or as an alternate - eg Xiaomi
think there's an integration that uses their bridge, but if you don't want to use that you can use a zigbee stick and zigbee2mqtt
ah ok, so if you want to bypass the tuya/xiaomi/aqara/whatever new name they have App/integration/cloud you can configure those devices using mqtt?
Because async is da bomb =)
as for any other benefits, I have NFI. I just accepted thats how some things were done.
err
i was under the impression if not using zwave or zigbee you could use only mqtt over wifi
like what i do with nodemcu's and esphome to create cheap lil sensors
ah ok, so if you want to bypass the tuya/xiaomi/aqara/whatever new name they have App/integration/cloud you can configure those devices using mqtt?
@dusty hull yep that's the initial and main one I use
I think you can do the same with Hue devices and yeet their bridge, but possibly issues with firmware updates? I also needed to keep Siri/HomeKit working, prior to it being implemented in HA.
Thanks for the responses and information
does it make more sense now?
Yeah i think so.
I work it/Network /software Dev as trade so I was frustrated feeling so dumb about it. Searches for it were only really coming up with technical explanations about the origins /pubsub/broker and not real useful examples of why to choose it over other protocols
That is most of the internet in 1 paragrah π
Oh you want to know about carrots? 137 page pdf about carrots
Great explination though, about mqtt
As an integration / service bus kind of guy professionally, but still smart home boob, the benefit of using queue based message transfer is your sending system does not have to wait until the receiving system is responsive / has processed the message.
Especially with the "fire and forget" kind of messaging from (many) dumb sensors I feel this would be useful.
I would like to use MQ transfer for anything that does not need to be processed immediately and does not care about the response from the receiving system.
So for climate sensors and things like that?

Hospital in Norway - https://i.imgur.com/2MYxroT.gifv
I actually helped build this hospital, I worked there for 2 years
Maybe you can help our hospitals
They spent a fortune on bedside workstations, centrally monitored observation machines etc at the new childrens hospital
And none of it's used
Everything is paper files in triplicate. Nurses read obs machines every 30 minutes by hand and write them into paper files
In two of our four hospital regions they aren't allowed to file paper anymore
And all old papers are being digitised
awesome so when power goes out in norway people die cause the hospital cannot function without power.. real classy
emp and norwegians fade away lol
I suspect they've got power outages handled π
Well... Every hospital has their own power substation, not mixed with any other buildings, they have UPS' that can maintain basic operations for 2-3 hours and they have diesel powered generators that can run for a day with just the diesel that is stored with them
That's a blast from the past
oh, and we don't have to pawn the house to see the specialist π€£
I have no idea what movie that is tbh
we don't either
π€
infact we could technically just walk out and pay nothing lmao
Highlander (1986)
OH
With soundtrack by Queen
I haven't watched that in...... 25 years
I haven't either, but I listen to the soundtrack fairly regularly
I remember it was pretty good, the followup movies not so much
Yeah, the first was fun - even with some really odd casting choices
Isn't it lorenzo lamas and sean connery ?
I didn't mind some of the sequels. as they dragged out they did get pretty bad tho
christopher lambert and sean connery
OH Lambert
shame sean connery died this year
I had forgotten that name
The TV series spinoff wasn't terrible - wasn't awesome, but wasn't terrible
Oh lord, I never saw that, I heard about it
was that the one that had lambert in it?
I liked the one where it had the multiple highlanders and they all had to single each other out
i mean more than the few that was in the original
fooookin network people
"yeah, we see no traffic on the firewall"
but I can't reach any of the services

goddamnit customers with spaces in the OUs
Haha. One of the first things I saw on Reddit today was a bunch of people whining about HA having links to HA stuff π€£
There's been discussion in #beta about that here too, but it's a subject best left to not this Discord
Oops
(it'll get heated)
Yeah, judging by the posts I saw, you're probably right. I'll leave it alone.
Take that, system!
For some reason today Nest doorbell is higher quality feed than Nest camera basically next to it
- customer has online store...
- online store advertises last few available ps5 for sale today

I was looking through chat history for weather stations. The Tempest looks neat and I want it.
ali's 18β¬ KKmoon cam took 36 days to austria
my brain had a very hard time reading that for some reason
I want to install my cams but there are 50mph winds which made me think about weather stations
agree, it looks weird but I wonder why norwats get their stuff so fast
not that I know of, I think it came by ship
I bought a bidet this morning. I wonder if I can automate the seats to heat up when I say "good morning" to google
I wonder if the remote is IR
so you invest in bidets rather than toilet paper?
I used wipes forever but at the new place I don't want to be naughty with the lease
toilet paper is not good enough
I like a really clean asshole

Hey guys, what is a good channel to pop into and ask questions about stability? I've been on Hass.io for awhile now but I'm experiencing sporadic disconnects and hang ups where I can't use HA.
I have bidet seats in all my bathrooms. Bidet is the way
@clever mortar thanks!

Has anyone experienced crashes with the iOS app when connected to Cellular?
I can launch the app whenever i'm connected to WiFi, but as soon as i try to connect using cellular, the app crashes.
For reference, i have the same connection URL for External & Internal since i use NGINX for external access. I can also confirm that i can access the External URL remotely from the phone's browser when using a cellular connection.
See #ios_and_mac-archived @regal linden (and the channel topic here π )
Of course! I thought i was posting there lol.
So I have been wondering something for a long time, forgive my ignorance...Ive only been using Home Assistant for 3+ years π
If there is somethin I want added to Home Assistant, but I have zero skills in actually contributing anything other then the idea...what is the way to do that? Is a pull request the method?
finding a developer
yea thats what i always did
there is a feature requests section on the forum
told it to one of the people that are smarter then me
make a detailed request there and it might pique the interests of a dev who might try to pick it up
probably the best way barring knowing someone you can bribe with booze
^^that has usually been th method of choice for me
its surprisingly effective
and then i usually find out it is already in the works π
haha
or better yet, already exists and i dint read the docs!
atx knows how it's done. He bullied me into making something he wanted.
Hasn't even promised beer.
Not if they look like that π€£
does anyone know if anyone's tried to do a build for streaming services?
like a roku or what's built into smart TVs
there is roku integrations already
you mean run HA on a smart TV?
that sounds horrible
no no
sorry I'm not being very articulate.
I would like to build something that centralizes all of my AV and audio media in one "box" and pushes it out to multiple screens/sets of screens and speakers/recievers that push it to speakers.
ideally it would be controllable by HA
I'm not finding anyone trying to do anything like this - which is surprising. Feel like someone would have traveled this road
You want to do some kind of multicasting?
Most people would have a NAS where everything lives, and then you can use a veriety of devices to play it back.
@deft pewter
Isn't that the cover for Meddle ? π€£
@clear ferry As someone who listened to WAY too much Pink Floyd in her early 20's... no, that's not the cover of Meddle at all. lol
In sync playing of any media is non trivial
yes - so a potential use case could be that i can automate screens/speakers that go on or off based on motion
And those apps or devices can be controlled via HA
I use media player...
so if I'm watching something in the living room and go to my bedroom i'd like it to just pick up what I was watching. I'd like all my TVs to be used as dumb TVs
and have the brains centralized in this one box
sounds like what I use Plex for on my NAS
You can do some of that with Plex
I use plex...
π
I use a combination of Plex and Spotify for that
Well, #integrations-archived for help with integrations

I was just unpacking my Access points which I thought I had 20 of
Turns out I have 40

I should sell the access points on eBay
Oprah those APs out!
I used to have a really good arrangement of the main theme...
... but I don't think it had the introduction like yours
π€
...not that I could actually play it.... but I wanted to
It's got some really weird timing.
nobody knows wtf im talking about
I think I know
I've only seen it once in my life
In the house of one of the richest men in the country when I did some network cabling
Fiber cables to every TV and stereo in the house, he could move about and the video or audio would follow him
With an amp in almost every room
right
it seems really accessible with home assistant
and also my apt is 500sqft lol
But that system was from the mid 00s and cost..... Roughly $40k per room
Total longshot as not sure where to post this query. How can I know if a RPi 4 in this case (https://thepihut.com/collections/raspberry-pi-cases/products/argon-one-m-2-raspberry-pi-4-case) with an SSD could somehow host HA?
A raspberry pi can run HA, as long as it is a 3 or newer with any storage, but I would never π€’ @dreamy karma
yea mid-2000s - that makes sense. Literally everything bespoke
It IS the suggested hardware for beginners.
why would you not @clear ferry ?
I have standards and expectations π€£
the best i can do right now is just run a roku/similar through a hdmi over ethernet/similar splitter
When you work with server halls, a pi seems a bit limited. For most other people itβs ok.
@vagrant blade the system I was Talking about ran off multiple crestron matrices
thats for replying @clear ferry . Its enough for me at home, but just wanted a bit more storage and wanted to move off using a microsd!
I have standards and expectations π€£
@clear ferry umm you use HP products.. these so called "standards" aren't even detectable
@dreamy karma anything beats SD for storage
And anything beats a pi in general, if you have a laptop or minicomputer from the last 10 years that be loads better
now to figure out how to install it onto the SSD
@vagrant blade I am in a building with distributed HDMI over Cat6. As many as 30 input sources and 112 outputs. We use Crestron as the brain, but we are, for lack of time to really deep dive on it, remapping ports to different VLANs in order to direct the signal from source to receive
You could theoretically create the distributed video fairly easily, having it follow you would require Bluetooth tracking or something to know which room you were in
well thats where HA would help..?
i already have pretty good presence detection
crestron.. so pro
Crestron is stupid spendy
hello everyone !
Their controllers are not too pricey, but their actual matrices and other hardware are ridiculous. That's why we have a Crestron brain controlling a homebrewed switching matrix
yea i dont see the need! I mean at the worst roku to HDMI splitters controllable with an IR blaster
its weird that there's open source Streaming OS
I think there used to be a linux one
@clear ferry Their hardware is probably the most solid I have seen. It just works and works forever.
@vagrant blade I think OSMC for the Pi will do streaming services. Not sure though. Never tried it
i looked into it a few weeks ago and i think its hairy for things like netflix and amazon prime
my dream system is literally any smart TV app that I use one one box
So I got my hands on some used Galaxy Tab 8's I'm going to mount in my house for basically nothing
π
paid $100 for 10 of them
I need to play with the Roku/remote integration in HA. I haven't even looked at what I can do with it. All of my rokus have the RF remote, but since I can control them through the LAN with my phone, I assume the remote integration will work similarly and could provide some "follow me" type control
Nice
I'm trying to get lineageos running on them with gapps but it's been a pain in the ass
gapps keeps breaking hte install
I thought I got lucky when I was handed 5 old iPads. But the browser in them won't load the HA frontend
just use the HA app
i mean i dont have roku or use that integration, but I bet the closest you'll get it have it turn the tv on to the same app
i assume ios has one right?
OS is 5.11 or something and the app is incompatible
I can apparently force them to iOS 6.x, but that's still not new enough
There are wall mount kits on Amazon for most every Samsung tab
I just gotta figure out how I want to mount these so they look clean
and drill a tiny hole and run the wiring through the wall
Indoor cameras π€’
and drill a tiny hole and run the wiring through the wall
@brazen fable that goes where?
Every inch of my bottom floor is covered by cameras
out another hole near an outlet?
I can run power inside the wall and tape it off
5v power?
Yep.
converted behind the wall?
Exactly
^ safety second
lol
i'm either relieved or a lot more worried
I'm certified in low voltage applications
But a little more home made
I wired these up in my car and they work well
cool product but i'm not sure how you'd keep that behind the wall
just need the right coverter
good luck with the project. sounds like you'll have a good set up!
https://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Power-Supply-Adapter-120V-AC-to-5V-DC-500mA-0-5A-Micro-Mini-USB-Connector-/202310862117 you could even set these up really. Just split off an outlet and create an internal/hidden box
Somewhere there are 100-230VAC to 5VDC 3A modules that will fit easily in a single gang box. I have seen them, yet cannot seem to Google them today
I can find 3.3VDC, perfect for ESP projects, but the 5VDC are elusive today
On a side note thanks to my recent Android Auto upgrade/new car I can control literally everything in my car hands free
including the garage door
it's pretty fucking rad
I am in the market for a new vehicle, and won't buy anything that doesn't support Android auto OOB
Yep
And the mileage I get on it is disgustingly good
Especially on winter blend gas
That is pretty bad milage by EU standards
It's miles, not kilometers
@clear ferry that video made me snort
And your 15yo volvo doesn't 0-60 in 5.5 seconds
Thankfully no
I am probably waiting for the 2021 Soul EV to hit the US market
I get 38 highway in a tuned 2013 Toyota GT86, which is pretty good for a non-hybrid
Mine is also non-hybrid
My old 12yo A6 Avant did 58mtg
It's also a decked out mid size sedan
Which is pretty standard here
My 2008 Prius runs like trash now and gets a whopping 44MPG with absolutely no effort to hypermile ever
Mine is a compromise between power, comfort, and economy
I'm never driving some slow piece of shit for a few extra mpg
The hybrids here do 75/80 mostly
lmao
US fuel efficiency standards are laughable
Highway speed limit is 70, which means people do 100
so you need to get up to speed fast.
or you get splatted
lmao
Nice
I gotta take my car and get new tints and fix up the audio
then she'll be all set
I picked up a 2020 accord sport 2.0t for a steal
I just need to defog the headlights (or swap them for the limited edition versions)
I'm jealous that Leapo is allowed to leave the trash receptacles in public view
Mine sit in the garage for convenience lmao
@spark orchid Leaving the cans out has its downsides... note that the yard-waste bin's lid is on the ground >_>
Wind caught it and yanked it right off
No running the garbage outside in freezing weather for me
just toss it in the bin in the garage
roll em out on garbage day
Mine stay outside, but are wheeled all the way to the back of the house. My garage is a multipurpose room, and I don't want it smelling like garbage
The golf GTE actually has 147 mpg, with 7.6 0-60
My front seats have plenty of room... my back seats might as well not exist >_>
The golf is surprisingly roomy compared to many other cars
They're basically there to make insurance cheaper, lol
I have too much shit in my car to let my daily driver be tiny
(Insurance is cheaper on 4-seaters)
hell my laptop backpack alone takes up a whole seat
And I would have had a golf over a Tesla any day, that ride comfort is horrible
Nah I miss my Model X
It was a great drive. Just inconvenient for now. Especially at client sites where they'd have more questions about the damn car then what I'm trying to sling
The X was slightly better than the S, but they are both shite
and not enough charging stations yet
I'll definitely revisit when EV's are more mainstream though
And the range in cold weather was pretty abysmal
Hybrids are probably going to be the way forward for a large chunk of the US, honestly
Last I heard 55% of all new cars here are EV, was close to 80% when they added the hybrids
I'm a fan of the "EV, but has the option of running the electric motor off of a gas/diesel/ethanol generator" option
The original Chevy Volt was like that
so a hybrid
No need for a heavy / complicated drivetrain to allow the gas engine to power the wheels directly, its only purpose is to generate electricity when the batteries are low.
They need to come up with a viable wireless charging option for at home chargin
plugging your shit in every night is kind of obnoxious
@bitter pawn No, hybrids can directly drive the wheels with the gas engine
hmm i see what you mean.
its an interesting idea
i still like the volvo's approach to hybrid that they had a year or so back
instead of a lithium battery
Hydrogen fuel cell?
they ran a compressor and pumped air into tanks.
i think it got like 30-40mpg but it was an interesting take on it
I thought compressed air proved to be not energy-dense enough, and also... potentially explosive...
i think the latter part is why they didnt go further with that design
but still pretty impressive
i think it was volvo i might be wrong
I remember that, half the video was talking about the design of the air tanks, and how they were made to "split" rather than "pop"
xD
That would be the concern, yeah. lol
Or a collision hits them the wrong way
Of course, it only has to be safer than a tank full of gasoline
idk i like the idea of getting somewhere cheaper instead of more expensive
But it turns out a tank full of gasoline is actually pretty damn safe
Yep.
Opera singers dubbed with dial up modems https://t.co/NrFogzhYch

2096
A nearly empty gas tank is actually more likely to explode than a full one. lol
but this whole "hybrids/EV's will save the planet" seems a bit of a stretch to me
just seems like a different type of pollution. or one that doesnt directly tie the user to the pollution.
I mean, the other advantage of hybrids is they don't need nearly as-large of batteries as full EVs
it's easier to shoot old batteries into the sun than clean emissions out of the air though π
So they're lighter, and get better milage out of both their gas and electric motors
And they don't use up nearly as much Lithium, which is dirty as hell to mine
Like, I can see why hybrids are taking off. It's a decent middle-ground
Lithium batteries will likely be old news in a few years
For me, the hybrid was the affordable option that happened to be a middle ground
gave the most ponies with the best mpg for the price i was looking for
I have wanted to go electric for a decade, just couldn't justify the cost
@brazen fable the newer model 3 and y both have heat pumps to keep the battery at the optimal temp
it's supposed to help with the range hit in the cold weather
that'll probably make its way to the S and X eventually
I feel like half my city drives model 3s now. They are everywhere.
A hybrid never made sense to me
It was always far more economical and environmental to just not buy a new car and drive less
uh huh
I mean if you're a taxi driver sure but at under 10 thousand k a year of driving the math never adds up
At the end of the day it's an efficient ICE.
@hushed basalt I mean, yeah. If you already have a car
Even when replacing a car
Not an option. I drive nearly 18k miles a year.
I live 40 miles from work. Not driving myself costs a fortune
The extra cost would never be an positive sum
I would have bought used, but... it was their second year making the GT86 when I bought mine
So there weren't many used 2012's, and you shouldn't buy the first model-year of any car
So you end up with two motors, two fuel systems, the complex interlinkage,
@brazen fable that's a low milage year for me
@hushed basalt This is why I advocate for EVs that have a backup gas generator (no drivetrain for the gas engine)
I do 30-40k km mostly
A hybrid would save me maybe $1500 a year in fuel
That would be useful @subtle pasture but then you're still lugging around a generator for the entire life of the car to be maybe used a few times
So that would shave off a good chunk of range and battery lifefime
@hushed basalt The idea is to offset the weight of a generator with a smaller battery
But that would just mean shorter range and higher depth of discharge
Nope, you have gas, your range is great
But you'd never be able to charge at any meaningful rate with a generator small enough to not be a problem
And you get MORE out of that gas than a normal car, because there are no mechanical losses
Not true, actually
A honda eu2000 is 2000VA but still weighs like 25KG
only 1500Ws of continuous delivery
Toyota developed a free-piston linear generator, it's tiny and efficient
It literally just uses combustion to sling a magnetic puck up and down a cylinder, and the cylinder is a giant coil
it's about as direct a gas -> electricity conversion as you can get. Neat stuff.
Two stroke π€’
They were claiming it was more efficient to use that + electric motors than it was to derive mechanical energy from the gas
Anything that's two stroke is not going to be good for the environment
They did a 4-stroke design with two opposing cylinders
Which you'd want anyway, to keep vibration down
I had a look at that design
The one I saw was clearly two stroke but maybe you have a better example
Maybe they have a way of doing it so it's not so inefficient
I'm not sure, but there's always a lot of chance for greenwashing
thanks.. now I watch the 3rd video bout Free-piston Engines π
meh
so what if you are lugging around a gas generator
the security blanket of knowing you wont get stranded is worth the cost
Batterys are a stupid idea anyway, yea nice and all but the concept is π€’
shrugs
depends on how you drive, and what the goal of the car is
i was in the situation where i wanted a cheap af car that got great mpg and newer so i wont have to be repairing it all the time
ford fusion hybrid was at 185hp gets about 45mpg and it was a 2019.
the next in line was a mitsubishi mirage that got 105hp with 40mpg.
shrugs i like the extra ponies.
PHEV fusion?
the plug in is called energi yeah
i rather mean the concept,
generate energy, store it, bring it so someone else with a car, store that energy in a massive flamable heavy pice of toxic thing and hope the whole thing wont die on you
and dinosaur squeezings are what?
ΒΏ
oil-based fuels
you are asking for mpg?
no, I'm asking @hearty depot what his take on fossil fuels is
can't really spill electricity and poison the land
also π€’
but batterys wont save the day imo
idk poisoning the land seems to be ok in china and india?
they seem to be doing alright
π
there's no other current (lol) technology that's viable for offsetting fossil fuels
hydrogen fuel cells have been "coming in 5 years" for 30 years now
nods
CNG is essentially the same as fossil fuels
yea.. sadly true.
In the 80's they expirimented a lot with hydrogen
but the politics back then put it down
im with @hearty depot on that batteries arent going to save the world of all its ills.
there will still be problems with EV's, hybrids, and gas cars. no matter what you do.
i agree it shouldnt be, but certain folks treat it like it is
you can't use alternative energy sources to make fossil fuels
π€£
the whole eco-peen bastards.
@brazen fable yikes
there may be, in the future, a way to store electricity other than batteries
but right now, it's the best we've got
cold fusion!
he, remembers me on my old biology teacher,
told the tail of the car key wich could produce the energy to let your car run
Isn't there a pneumatic storage system being worked on at the moment? They already did a small scale test and they're scaling up.
steampunk future! yasssssss!
$3k thats alot
It's a good audio system.
but not too crazy for car audio
i mean a good deck is like $500-$600
worth it hopefully, I upgraded my sytem back when I had a car, was actually a minor downgrade but meh
Not even getting a head unit
$2600 for just speakers and amps....
hmmm
idk if getting ripped off or paying for some quality rubbers.
Full alpine all around. 6 speaks + amp + sub + dsp + controller
ah alpine is typically good stuff
unless you get suckered into their walmart line stuff lolz
i still cant believe they lowered their quality to sell shit there.
Alpine R series
Main speakers
then 2 more for tweeters in the pillars
π― a man
an amp to power them + a 12" alpine sub
add the wiring and controller and dsp
it adds up
yeah it does
tell any woman that you ll spend more then 1k on a audio system ynd she ll see you as a madman π
this is true
Lmao. Wifey doesn't know what I spend on shit
I have 10k in computer equipment in my home office alone
π€£
that's not including the HAM radio shit
but most of them dont want a sound system that may or may not stop the heart of an elderly person at max volume
its better that they dont know π€£
just asking me how much money I spent on home automation
yeah that's another bill
Yeah honey, that light switch was like $20 uh huh
Just enjoy your voice automation π
or the $50 light bulbs
.>
each
well off to home i go.
I got them sync'd to my whole home audio
and boy does it make "all i want for christmas" pop
lul
bought new lightstrip.. very cheap
Like 130β¬ π
I'm not doing hue light strips
that's a rip off
The hue lights are great because they last forever
I still have my original hue bulbs from like 8 years ago
still running strong
but any LED light strip will do just fine
I want to completely light up my battlestation at home with led strips
meh
I ran some strips with motion activation on the staircase and it works well
i really dont care how my computer/monitors appear to someone else.
i just care how it works
hence why im not a huge RGB fan
my isp doubled bandwidth for free because everyone is working from home π₯³
me2
welp im out
Later doc
Unlimited bandwidth π§
yep, i was shocked too
I was pretty excited about DSL in 2000
Ftth since 2004 bitches
ftth since.... 6 years now
I was supposed to have metroE fiber last year but it got cancelled due to covid
π
I heard you have symmetrical 500 in vienna @hearty depot , whats up there?
a glorious 3gbps symmetrical
not here
the street I live in ll maybe get a connection in 3012
or be fair.. 2035
but hey, therefor I have 4m tall walls yaaay
altbau?

hmm do I want tasmota or esphome on my smart plugs I just got for $5 each
ESPHome every time... but you want to ask support questions in a support channel. I'd suggest #diy-archived for flashing stuff π
thanks!
I think Tediore has an opinion on that π
I don't have a problem with flashing them, there's a long thread on that for my specific device already
I just don't know which open source firmware is better for my usage
You can try both. I lean Tasmota all day
any particular reason why for your picks @deft pewter @tidal bronze ?
I've only used ESPHome and like it a lot, but there are lots of Tasmota fans
I did do a search for "esphome tasmota" in this discord chat but everyone says "esphome or tasmota" without providing any reasons for either one specifically
so I thought I'd ask, otherwise I can try both lol
Nothing like trying and deciding for yourself.
I found ESPHome to be supereasy to use, has OTA flashing, lots of built-in functionality, and interfaces directly to HA. But most of that is probably true of Tasmota too
That was my experience with Tasmota. ESPHome was too difficult to get working on any of my devices :x
It's that time of the year. π
What IDE do you guys use inside HA?
I used to use the configurator.. is there a better one?
(Hoping to not have to insall 200MB of bloat to edit text files)
@tidal bronze your alittle late but I guess you sticking some leds in the ground is better than nothing..
Some is relative when it comes to me and pixels π
Getting ready for a Weekend of layer blending.
whatever that means
Get your xlights on my man. Time to put your premier skills to work.
my lights been up fool lol
the benefit of not having to do some elaborate pixel crap. my shit just plugs in and done lol
anyone having problems loading the release notes?
@forest edge so how do you rock your incandescent bulbs to I got 5 on it? 80's pedal switch ? π
@tidal bronze they are leds, and they are on smart relays. even got lights on my shed controled with a KP400 Kasa switch
the range on that KP400 is crazy, it's like over 200ft away
On off is great, sawtooth shader is much better π
I know I am a little LED crazy
I am excited when my two outlets come on at the same time so it looks like they are all tied together π€£. That along with the two Christmas trees all lighting in conjunction with the outdoor lights. Win/win
hi guys, i am looking to buy a rasp pi 4. wondering what usb stick zwave+ radio to go. I'd prefer zwave+ and zigbee in one, but would it be better to use independent sticks/radios for each protocol? zooz s2 usb stick seems good for zwave+?
I wonder if there's a way to trigger HA to use wireguard tunnel while outside of home network
I wonder if there's a way to trigger HA to use wireguard tunnel while outside of home network
@fallen furnace You mean for your phone to auto-connect to a wireguard tunnel back to your home router when you're not at home?
yikes
really not into advertising on my own stuff
is there a setting or something I can set to never see anything like this again?
looks like it was removed in https://github.com/home-assistant/frontend/pull/7731
@fallen furnace You mean for your phone to auto-connect to a wireguard tunnel back to your home router when you're not at home?
@dusty hull yup
have not gotten there myself trying to get HA to do that. currently using Automate for android to automatically run that vpn connect task
I think you would need to combine Home Assistant with tasker on android to accomplish that. I'm still looking into other possibilities but nothing yet
anyone having problems loading the release notes?
@midnight adder Yep, same for me.
Is anyone that can fix this aware? The page is in a constant refresh loop and never loads
@buoyant quiver Yeah, I saw that and my hackles immediately went up as well
You can dismiss it with the "x" in the lower-left corner of the banner, but it's stored as a cookie...
So it's not really persistent across sessions or users or browsers
https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/jwwyry/advertisements_in_118/ There is a message there from the lead dev, and you'll find some history in the #beta channel
I went ahead and just blocked it with my ad-blocker π€·ββοΈ
+1 for uBlock origin, I suppose
Also weird... selected theme is stored as a cookie? So that doesn't persist either O.o
Yup
Any way to set a server-side default for a user / all users?
You can set the default theme with the relevant service
I know themes got a pretty big overhaul semi-recently
Yeah, pretty sure I did that, but clearing cookies still seems to revert me to blinding-white
I still have a old old automation that sets my theme for all users π€£
@clear ferry That might still be the way to go, lol
On every reboot that is
@clear ferry Good call, that did the trick π
That joins my other "System" automation that reloads template sensors on every restart after 3 minutes of uptime, because otherwise some template sensors never populate after a restart/reboot
Mostly the template sensors that require the RainMachine integration to have fully loaded
Seems there's a bit of a race condition there...
setting up ubuntu server for the first time since before atx was born and holy cow things sure have changed lol
Has anyone ever upgraded from a unifi AC lite to a nanohd
@hushed basalt let me know what you think of the nanoHD... i usually deploy UniFi UAC-AP-LR
The nanoHD is a lot newer than the LR though right?
WTF
PlayStation 5 are for sale on the national eBay for $2500-3000
Even up to $5000 it seems
Wut
Yeah... scalpers.
Sony didn't release enough stock, so scalpers are going to buy them all out and price gouge.
And the really sad bit is that some people will actually pay that just to get them without waiting for a restock.
I am definitely not one of those people
I bought an xbox 360 in like 2011
Actually probably 2012
I still have a PS3. Only still have it cos it means not having to buy a Bluray player.
I do most of my gaming on PC anyway. And if Microsoft are going to uphold their promise of making Xbox games available on PC, there's not much reason to get a console now.
I usually buy consoles a year after release
And I never buy full price games, either used or heavily discounted in the online store
Well that's the thing with most PC games (except multiplayer)... they're available for ahem nothing after a while.
I was just in time to play daemon souls on PS3 before they shut down the servers π€£
Yeah... that annoys me about multiplayer features in games. You never know when they'll just turn it off.
And this is how we can tell you use too much Linux... it's 'demon', not 'daemon' π€£
Tomato, tomato
Hi, some1 knows a good tutorial how to enable remote access to my home assistant core? All the tutorials online are for "hassio".
I finally got my Proraso stuff @deft pewter it was nice
Proraso is for the summer - too cold for winter π
You should see my -35c winters then
atx has less grace
@clear ferry Im familiar, In Montreal we can go from 40Β°c to -40Β°c within the span of a few months π
Hi, some1 knows a good tutorial how to enable remote access to my home assistant core? All the tutorials online are for "hassio".
@frozen sun Do you want to pay for nabu casa? Because that's the easiest option for remote access. If not, you could use something like an NGinx proxy etc
@frozen sun Do you want to pay for nabu casa? Because that's the easiest option for remote access. If not, you could use something like an NGinx proxy etc
@spare spade I just bought a new house, I want to try (and learn) a cost free function :-D
@frozen sun How do you have it installed right now?
Take your support conversations elsewhere please, guys π
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that.

Sorry
finally found my ecobee issue
stupid fan switch is going out but has not yet fully failed
basicaly yes
that's way better, more people can help with that
awesome
Hi everyone! Just joined the discord channel, really excited to keep up to date with what this community is up to and provide my own insights and learnings as well π
Welcome to the club. Have fun shitposting in #the-water-cooler and check out the other channels for support π
Thanks! Looking forward to it π
Out of curiosity, is there an area within Discord where people could talk about IoT news that could relate to Home Assistant or is this server just for support / shitposting? π
Generally it's pretty HA focussed here for some reason π
Non support chat is fine in this channel
There's often a load of general tech talk in here.
Cold fusion reactors and all that.
@last plaza fun fact, I ordered such a suit from ali, but never got it for last years christmas party, I would have take a picture for you of me shoveling snow if I had it
@inner vault Sacre bleu!
Don't scare them off in the first 30 minutes, @clever mortar
You mean I should aim for the first 5?
shitposting honestly makes it more appealing
@clear ferry also humid. We go from Dagobah to Hoth from July to December
As long as the shitposting is PG and respects all parties, it's cool.
That's not shit. That's clearly a McD's chocolate milkshake.
The t-Rex costume is on sale today @clear ferry
Costume? How dare you talk about his mother like that.
Speaking of shit... that Jiu Jitsu movie with Nic Cage released today π€£
I'm going to see if I can force the missus to sit through it with me. It looks terrible.
π
I don't know what's worse... that it's a story where martial artists save the day from an invading alien race that come every 7 years (Mortal Kombat rip-off??) or that none of the clips in the trailer even featured jiu jitsu π€’
I enjoyed that, even if he was a little too much crazy.
Color Out Of Space was my kind of movie
Have you seen the one where all the parents try to murder their children with the legendary Mr Cage?
sounds vaguely familiar lol
@clear ferry I couldnβt handle vampire girl vs Frankenstein girl movie.
I love modern nick cage
Tokyo Gore Police is also good
Mandy was amazing
after messing with the config, my sidebar tabs names have changed. I believe its because i got rid of default_config and added each integration individually
thanks for sharing

It's no Aeon Flux.
I'm not sure I'd call Jojo "scifi"... It starts out as a vampire anime, and evolves into "buff ghosts with supernatural powers fighting"
So you're saying it's inferior to sci-fi?
so Jojo, something more to look for?
seen it here a little

Salem!
@clear ferry Season or part? Because season 1 is part 1/2, and Season 2 is part 3/4
K going to look for stealing jojo
@subtle pasture well, anything up to the end of whammu π€£
Also for you anime virgins, download the original Full metal alchemist
@clear ferry You don't actually get to see Dio properly dealt with until the end of Season 2 (part 4)
I'm an anime virgin and proud of it
A bit.
I did read Akira if that counts
The film conversion of Akira is pretty stunning, and it's still often-referenced in modern anime
Fist of the north star > akira
The comic just went on and on and on..
@hearty depot FMA
Can't forget the classics: Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Black Lagoon, Hellsing Ultimate
still watichg GitS like 2 times a year
Trigun, Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho...
I'm more a weirdo Image comics kinda dude
Ranma 1/2 if you're up for getting your egg cracked
I actually enjoyed the scarlet Johansson adaptation of ghost in the shell, fite me
I just wish we could get more Berserk π€
the story bortherd me hard.

More cats
Goblin slayer is good too, hope season 2 happens
Pls

Gunsmith Cats, Dirty Pair, Birdy the Mighty, Rin
My anime collection is all over the place @_@
Check out "School Live" if you want a bit of a mindfuck. It starts out as a slice of life school anime... it really, REALLY isn't

Oh, and lets not forget "Interspecies Reviewers," which Funimation picked up... and then immediately dropped after dubbing one episode
Because they realized they'd purchased dub / release rights to a hentai
23 minutes ain't no one got time for that. Added to 'watch later'
After pulling Interspecies Reviewers, it immediately climbed to #1 on Funimation's own charts thanks to stupid levels of publicity from the mixup
Which prompted the original studio to release a second season
I still want to know how they managed to purchase the rights to a show they knew nothing about
Liquor television
Liquid
Also Underknowledge I tried but that video was arse.
As in smelly unwashed arse.
π€£ watched the whole thing
I will if you watch this: https://youtu.be/YwRdaeYp8eg

@hearty depot did you buy the fridge? The HA integration is currently broke and if you have custom controls in HA, it wonβt render well in the browser on the fridge.
nope, I have to brake the current fridge in a sneaky sneaky way π
Where would be a good place to get a recommendation for smart locks that are esp8266 based?
Recommendations for #hardware-archived? I'm not sure.
Hah, thanks. Don't spend too much time here on discord these days
All the more reason to look at the channel list in case something has changed π
What are you guys using for IR blasters?
@brazen fable , read the last three posts, directly above yours
Well. That's new.
What?
I got nothing. #hardware-archived have been here a while, and, three posts up. Prob better to just accept and post in the proper channel.
Anyone ever put their solar panels on East/West orientation?
Actually I think my greenhouse solar panels are
I'm thinking it makes a lot of sense for here
Exporting power is worth next to nothing so getting a bigger window of self consumption is better than the sum of energy generated
Any reason to swap from opnsense to pfsense? Looking to add in unbound to opn so I can get rid of my pihole (don't need pretty graphs).
Will be a new build, so I can swap with minimal effort. Only dhcp, ntp, nut server and unbound. Perhaps suricatta
there is no integration for pfsense in HA, so that might be a reason π
