dusty hull
#

does anyone have a link for a decent article or video explaining mqtt and how it relates to home automation? have read a lot of sites and I am feeling really dumb not getting what it is actually used for.

inland wigeon
#

Think of it more as a messaging protocol - like SMS.

#

devices send messages to a broker, which then stores/forwards these messages to others (eg HA)

#

these messages can contain commands, status updates, values etc

dusty hull
#

So I kind of get the idea of it being a messaging protocol and not a communication standard i.e. wifi/zigbee.

inland wigeon
#

yah

dusty hull
#

and oddly I can understand the technical idea of the broker and qos messages with multiple topics. Just not fully certain why/when I would use it in my smart home automation. Maybe I just don't have devices or scenes that require it?

inland wigeon
#

ahh ok

dusty hull
#

so with HA, it can already push/poll the state of entities. what benefit do I get with integrating mqtt?

inland wigeon
#

yeah perhaps - in my case I've got xiaomi/aqara sensors (via zigbee), weber igrill (via BT to raspi then MQTT), unraid server monitor

#

they all have their own initial communication protocols, but in the end spit out stuff to MQTT, which HA can then use

#

if you have devices that can only use MQTT, or need to use it as an intermediary

#

eg don't need it for say Hue, cause it's got an integration

dusty hull
#

so its for devices without integrations already created?

inland wigeon
#

yep, or as an alternate - eg Xiaomi

#

think there's an integration that uses their bridge, but if you don't want to use that you can use a zigbee stick and zigbee2mqtt

dusty hull
#

ah ok, so if you want to bypass the tuya/xiaomi/aqara/whatever new name they have App/integration/cloud you can configure those devices using mqtt?

turbid stirrup
#

Because async is da bomb =)

inland wigeon
#

as for any other benefits, I have NFI. I just accepted thats how some things were done.

hollow glacier
#

err

#

i was under the impression if not using zwave or zigbee you could use only mqtt over wifi

#

like what i do with nodemcu's and esphome to create cheap lil sensors

inland wigeon
#

ah ok, so if you want to bypass the tuya/xiaomi/aqara/whatever new name they have App/integration/cloud you can configure those devices using mqtt?
@dusty hull yep that's the initial and main one I use

#

I think you can do the same with Hue devices and yeet their bridge, but possibly issues with firmware updates? I also needed to keep Siri/HomeKit working, prior to it being implemented in HA.

dusty hull
#

Thanks for the responses and information

inland wigeon
#

does it make more sense now?

dusty hull
#

Yeah i think so.

#

I work it/Network /software Dev as trade so I was frustrated feeling so dumb about it. Searches for it were only really coming up with technical explanations about the origins /pubsub/broker and not real useful examples of why to choose it over other protocols

As an integration / service bus kind of guy professionally, but still smart home boob, the benefit of using queue based message transfer is your sending system does not have to wait until the receiving system is responsive / has processed the message.
Especially with the "fire and forget" kind of messaging from (many) dumb sensors I feel this would be useful.
I would like to use MQ transfer for anything that does not need to be processed immediately and does not care about the response from the receiving system.

So for climate sensors and things like that?

I get 38 highway in a tuned 2013 Toyota GT86, which is pretty good for a non-hybrid

Mine is also non-hybrid

My old 12yo A6 Avant did 58mtg

brazen fable

It's also a decked out mid size sedan

Which is pretty standard here

My 2008 Prius runs like trash now and gets a whopping 44MPG with absolutely no effort to hypermile ever

brazen fable

Mine is a compromise between power, comfort, and economy

I'm never driving some slow piece of shit for a few extra mpg

The hybrids here do 75/80 mostly

brazen fable

lmao

spark orchid

US fuel efficiency standards are laughable

brazen fable

so you need to get up to speed fast.

brazen fable
#

I have too much shit in my car to let my daily driver be tiny

subtle pasture
#

(Insurance is cheaper on 4-seaters)

brazen fable
#

hell my laptop backpack alone takes up a whole seat

clear ferry
#

And I would have had a golf over a Tesla any day, that ride comfort is horrible

brazen fable
#

Nah I miss my Model X

#

It was a great drive. Just inconvenient for now. Especially at client sites where they'd have more questions about the damn car then what I'm trying to sling

clear ferry
#

The X was slightly better than the S, but they are both shite

brazen fable
#

and not enough charging stations yet

#

I'll definitely revisit when EV's are more mainstream though

#

And the range in cold weather was pretty abysmal

subtle pasture
#

Hybrids are probably going to be the way forward for a large chunk of the US, honestly

brazen fable
#

yeah probably

#

I took a hard look at the Honda Clarity but it's just ugly as fuck

clear ferry
#

Last I heard 55% of all new cars here are EV, was close to 80% when they added the hybrids

subtle pasture
#

I'm a fan of the "EV, but has the option of running the electric motor off of a gas/diesel/ethanol generator" option

#

The original Chevy Volt was like that

bitter pawn
#

so a hybrid

subtle pasture
#

No need for a heavy / complicated drivetrain to allow the gas engine to power the wheels directly, its only purpose is to generate electricity when the batteries are low.

brazen fable
#

They need to come up with a viable wireless charging option for at home chargin

#

plugging your shit in every night is kind of obnoxious

subtle pasture
#

@bitter pawn No, hybrids can directly drive the wheels with the gas engine

bitter pawn
#

hmm i see what you mean.

#

its an interesting idea

#

i still like the volvo's approach to hybrid that they had a year or so back

#

instead of a lithium battery

subtle pasture
#

Hydrogen fuel cell?

bitter pawn
#

they ran a compressor and pumped air into tanks.

#

i think it got like 30-40mpg but it was an interesting take on it

subtle pasture
#

I thought compressed air proved to be not energy-dense enough, and also... potentially explosive...

bitter pawn
#

i think the latter part is why they didnt go further with that design

#

but still pretty impressive

#

i think it was volvo i might be wrong

subtle pasture
#

I remember that, half the video was talking about the design of the air tanks, and how they were made to "split" rather than "pop"

brazen fable
#

Until they don't

#

lmao

bitter pawn
#

xD

subtle pasture
#

That would be the concern, yeah. lol

brazen fable
#

Or a collision hits them the wrong way

subtle pasture
#

Of course, it only has to be safer than a tank full of gasoline

bitter pawn
#

idk i like the idea of getting somewhere cheaper instead of more expensive

subtle pasture
#

But it turns out a tank full of gasoline is actually pretty damn safe

brazen fable
#

Yep.

inner vault
subtle pasture
#

A nearly empty gas tank is actually more likely to explode than a full one. lol

bitter pawn
#

but this whole "hybrids/EV's will save the planet" seems a bit of a stretch to me

#

just seems like a different type of pollution. or one that doesnt directly tie the user to the pollution.

subtle pasture
#

I mean, the other advantage of hybrids is they don't need nearly as-large of batteries as full EVs

inner vault
#

it's easier to shoot old batteries into the sun than clean emissions out of the air though πŸ˜‰

subtle pasture
#

So they're lighter, and get better milage out of both their gas and electric motors

#

And they don't use up nearly as much Lithium, which is dirty as hell to mine

#

Like, I can see why hybrids are taking off. It's a decent middle-ground

bitter pawn
#

yeah.

#

thats why i own one.

spark orchid
#

Lithium batteries will likely be old news in a few years

#

For me, the hybrid was the affordable option that happened to be a middle ground

bitter pawn
#

gave the most ponies with the best mpg for the price i was looking for

spark orchid
#

I have wanted to go electric for a decade, just couldn't justify the cost

bitter pawn
#

plus all the safety bells and whistles i was wanting

#

still

brazen fable
#

Comfort/Speed/MPG. Those are my priorities.

#

lmao

#

in that order

bitter pawn
#

i miss my lexus.

#

it just looks so much meaner

last dirge
#

@brazen fable the newer model 3 and y both have heat pumps to keep the battery at the optimal temp

#

it's supposed to help with the range hit in the cold weather

#

that'll probably make its way to the S and X eventually

spark orchid
#

I feel like half my city drives model 3s now. They are everywhere.

hushed basalt
#

A hybrid never made sense to me

#

It was always far more economical and environmental to just not buy a new car and drive less

brazen fable
#

uh huh

hushed basalt
#

I mean if you're a taxi driver sure but at under 10 thousand k a year of driving the math never adds up

#

At the end of the day it's an efficient ICE.

subtle pasture
#

@hushed basalt I mean, yeah. If you already have a car

hushed basalt
#

Even when replacing a car

brazen fable
#

Not an option. I drive nearly 18k miles a year.

spark orchid
#

I live 40 miles from work. Not driving myself costs a fortune

hushed basalt
#

The extra cost would never be an positive sum

brazen fable
#

That's 28968.19 kilometers for the non-freedom folk

#

per year

subtle pasture
#

I would have bought used, but... it was their second year making the GT86 when I bought mine

#

So there weren't many used 2012's, and you shouldn't buy the first model-year of any car

hushed basalt
#

So you end up with two motors, two fuel systems, the complex interlinkage,

clear ferry
#

@brazen fable that's a low milage year for me

subtle pasture
#

@hushed basalt This is why I advocate for EVs that have a backup gas generator (no drivetrain for the gas engine)

clear ferry
#

I do 30-40k km mostly

hushed basalt
#

A hybrid would save me maybe $1500 a year in fuel

#

That would be useful @subtle pasture but then you're still lugging around a generator for the entire life of the car to be maybe used a few times

#

So that would shave off a good chunk of range and battery lifefime

subtle pasture
#

@hushed basalt The idea is to offset the weight of a generator with a smaller battery

hushed basalt
#

But that would just mean shorter range and higher depth of discharge

subtle pasture
#

Nope, you have gas, your range is great

hushed basalt
#

But you'd never be able to charge at any meaningful rate with a generator small enough to not be a problem

subtle pasture
#

And you get MORE out of that gas than a normal car, because there are no mechanical losses

#

Not true, actually

hushed basalt
#

A honda eu2000 is 2000VA but still weighs like 25KG

#

only 1500Ws of continuous delivery

subtle pasture
#

Toyota developed a free-piston linear generator, it's tiny and efficient

#

It literally just uses combustion to sling a magnetic puck up and down a cylinder, and the cylinder is a giant coil

#

it's about as direct a gas -> electricity conversion as you can get. Neat stuff.

hushed basalt
#

Two stroke 🀒

subtle pasture
#

They were claiming it was more efficient to use that + electric motors than it was to derive mechanical energy from the gas

hushed basalt
#

Anything that's two stroke is not going to be good for the environment

subtle pasture
#

They did a 4-stroke design with two opposing cylinders

#

Which you'd want anyway, to keep vibration down

brazen fable
#

Time for audio system quotes

#

Ouch my wallet

hushed basalt
#

I had a look at that design

#

The one I saw was clearly two stroke but maybe you have a better example

#

Maybe they have a way of doing it so it's not so inefficient

#

I'm not sure, but there's always a lot of chance for greenwashing

hearty depot
#

thanks.. now I watch the 3rd video bout Free-piston Engines πŸ™ˆ

bitter pawn
#

meh

#

so what if you are lugging around a gas generator

#

the security blanket of knowing you wont get stranded is worth the cost

hearty depot
#

Batterys are a stupid idea anyway, yea nice and all but the concept is 🀒

bitter pawn

#

depends on how you drive, and what the goal of the car is

ford fusion hybrid was at 185hp gets about 45mpg and it was a 2019.

Hi, some1 knows a good tutorial how to enable remote access to my home assistant core? All the tutorials online are for "hassio".
@frozen sun Do you want to pay for nabu casa? Because that's the easiest option for remote access. If not, you could use something like an NGinx proxy etc

Hi everyone! Just joined the discord channel, really excited to keep up to date with what this community is up to and provide my own insights and learnings as well πŸ™‚

deft pewter
#

Welcome to the club. Have fun shitposting in #the-water-cooler and check out the other channels for support πŸ™‚

placid jackal
#

Thanks! Looking forward to it πŸ˜‰

#

Out of curiosity, is there an area within Discord where people could talk about IoT news that could relate to Home Assistant or is this server just for support / shitposting? πŸ™‚

low harness

Or here, I think...

Generally it's pretty HA focussed here for some reason πŸ˜„

Non support chat is fine in this channel

deft pewter

There's often a load of general tech talk in here.

Cold fusion reactors and all that.

clear ferry

@last plaza fun fact, I ordered such a suit from ali, but never got it for last years christmas party, I would have take a picture for you of me shoveling snow if I had it

Don't scare them off in the first 30 minutes, @clever mortar

You mean I should aim for the first 5?

shitposting honestly makes it more appealing

@clear ferry also humid. We go from Dagobah to Hoth from July to December

deft pewter

As long as the shitposting is PG and respects all parties, it's cool.

clear ferry

shitposting you say

deft pewter

That's not shit. That's clearly a McD's chocolate milkshake.

Speaking of shit... that Jiu Jitsu movie with Nic Cage released today 🀣

#

I'm going to see if I can force the missus to sit through it with me. It looks terrible.

shy comet

whats it called?

#

oh literally called jiu jitsu lol

deft pewter
#

πŸ˜‰

#

I don't know what's worse... that it's a story where martial artists save the day from an invading alien race that come every 7 years (Mortal Kombat rip-off??) or that none of the clips in the trailer even featured jiu jitsu 🀒

shy comet
#

those B rated movies are great lol

color out of space was weird

deft pewter

I enjoyed that, even if he was a little too much crazy.

Color Out Of Space was my kind of movie

#

Have you seen the one where all the parents try to murder their children with the legendary Mr Cage?

sounds vaguely familiar lol

It is called "Mom and Dad"

He and Selma Blair are apparently quite adept at crazy

It's no Aeon Flux.

subtle pasture
#

I'm not sure I'd call Jojo "scifi"... It starts out as a vampire anime, and evolves into "buff ghosts with supernatural powers fighting"

deft pewter

So you're saying it's inferior to sci-fi?

so Jojo, something more to look for?

Oh, and lets not forget "Interspecies Reviewers," which Funimation picked up... and then immediately dropped after dubbing one episode

Because they realized they'd purchased dub / release rights to a hentai

deft pewter
young sigil

23 minutes ain't no one got time for that. Added to 'watch later'

subtle pasture

After pulling Interspecies Reviewers, it immediately climbed to #1 on Funimation's own charts thanks to stupid levels of publicity from the mixup

Which prompted the original studio to release a second season

I still want to know how they managed to purchase the rights to a show they knew nothing about

Any reason to swap from opnsense to pfsense? Looking to add in unbound to opn so I can get rid of my pihole (don't need pretty graphs).
