Better? 🤔

brisk glen
#

Didn’t google start thread?

hollow glacier
#

Ur a thread 🔪

brisk glen
#

And isn’t it going to be the network IoT standard across Apple, google, Samsung etc?

#

Self healing mesh

hollow glacier
#

Like to replace zigbee zwave etc?

deft pewter
#

CHIP is the one they're all working together on. That's not the same, is it?

brisk glen
#

With multiple jib support

#

Hub*

#

I think CHIP is going to use thread

#

It’s ip based unlike zigbee and can have many router/gateways

hollow glacier
#

Ah

brisk glen
#

Zigbee is limited to a single hub

#

It’s basically zigbee but better

#

Cheaper 0.0

deft pewter
#

An easily adoptable application standard for a set of network technologies, including Wi-Fi, Thread, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

#

So basically...

#

Yay... another standard.

brisk glen
#

Interesting enough, some of my Bluetooth HomeKit devices are getting a software upgrade..... for thread support

deft pewter
#

Nice. So your niche stuff is still going to be niche, just under another name 🤣

#

CHIP isn't going to replace Zigbee/Z-Wave. It'll take years to gain the market share necessary to convince people to switch.

#

I'm still not sure by which metric you think CHIP/Thread are 'better' either.

brisk glen
#

See multiple hub statement

deft pewter
#

See my last message 🤷‍♂️

brisk glen
#

No more single point of failure

deft pewter
#

There's always a single point of failure. You just move it a little further down the line.

brisk glen
#

Lol

deft pewter
#

But the CHIP/Thread marketers love folk like you that buy in to their marketing gimmicks 😉

brisk glen
#

And Phillips hue loves charging me $50 per bulb

clever mortar
#

So... buy another brand

#

Brands charge what people will pay... if you're willing to pay, that's your fault 😉

deft pewter
#

There's a load of choice out there for Zigbee that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

clear ferry
#

I have three hue bulbs, worst of everything i own tbh

clever mortar
#

If I'm paying $50, it's because I went with Z-Wave not Zigbee

deft pewter
#

But... HomeKit stuff? Yeah, that's definitely in arm and a leg territory. You're paying for the brand.

brisk glen
#

HomeKit is still a requirement for me

deft pewter
#

It's a choice, not a requirement. 🤷‍♂️

brisk glen
#

Lol

deft pewter
#

You've limited your own options.

#

And if the best retort you can come up with is 'lol', you're hardly convincing anyone we're wrong.

#

There's a world of choices out there. Each have their own merits.

brisk glen
#

I already made up my mind for a HA/HomeKit setup

deft pewter
#

Exactly. You made your mind up. It wasn't a requirement.

#

So you've boxed yourself in to a niche set of products now

clear ferry
#

Sounds like my regular Cisco customers

deft pewter
#

Anyway... that's your choice. Live with it. Just don't try convincing the rest of us what's best.

brisk glen
#

Cisco.... good god

clear ferry
#

Imagine if Cisco and apple merged

#

🤢

brisk glen
#

That’s where the 🤮

#

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

clear ferry
#

A constant self wankery

brisk glen
#

Just think about that makes me want to throw up

clever mortar
#

Worse, then they were bought by Oracle 😛

brisk glen
#

I like the HomeKit protocol

brisk glen
#

One of the few without MDNS issues

deft pewter
#

People even use mDNS?

hushed basalt
#

Zigbees biggest weakness is the single coordinator

deft pewter
#

But even that isn't really a problem if you don't pick a trash coordinator 🙂

hushed basalt
#

Yeah but it's still a single point

#

Especially if you're running it on a RPi

#

Meanwhile a wifi bulb will run as long as it can see something with the right SSID

#

Too bad all the wifi bulbs are trash or they are like $90

deft pewter
#

Your WiFi bulb will run until your router isn't available. That's no different to a single hub for Zigbee.

#

WiFi and Zigbee are almost equivalent, with Zigbee edging out a lead because it has a self-healing mesh network.

#

And let's say someone switches to a fancy new standard with multiple hubs... what do they talk to? That's right... your internet router.

hushed basalt
#

But a zigbee coordinator is ontop of an existing network of switches, routers, access points etc

deft pewter
#

Yes...

hushed basalt
#

Coordinators fail. Zigbee2mqtt instances can fail. Host OS can fail,

deft pewter
#

Routers can fail

#

Power can fail

hushed basalt
#

Yes but the zigbee dependencies are accumulative with those things not independent

deft pewter
#

Saying there's 'no single point of failure' just because it has multiple border routers is a blatant lie.

#

The single point of failure is just the next step along.

hushed basalt
#

Okay buddy

deft pewter
#

All the Thread marking guys are saying is 'not my problem'.

hushed basalt
#

Risk is likelyhood x impact

deft pewter
#

I'd love to hear the thoughts of the others here that have worked entire careers with infrastructure 🤷‍♂️

hushed basalt
#

If the power is out lights won't work anyway

#

If the router is out the local stuff still works

#

If an access point dies another one can take the bulbs

#

If a coordinator dies that's it

clear ferry
#

Takes 5 minutes to replace a coordinator

hushed basalt
#

And I can't buy a new coordinator in an hour

clear ferry
#

You can even have a hot standby

hushed basalt
#

I have to order it and wait weeks

#

How do you do a hot standby?

clear ferry
#

A preinstalled pi with a unused coordinator attached

hushed basalt
#

But will they pair to it

clear ferry
#

The current model ZigBee coordinator sticks are so cheap if I ever change I'll order two anyway

#

They don't have to pair to it

#

If the config is the same and the stick is running the same firmware

#

It will just fire up

deft pewter
#

Yeah. Same firmware, same PAN, bingo.

hushed basalt
#

But that's not a trivial thing for an average person to automate

clear ferry
#

Pretty simple tbh

deft pewter
#

Home automation in general isn't trivial

hushed basalt
#

If zigbee2mqtt could do that natively that'd be great

clear ferry
#

Most home automation users shouldn't automate their home tbh

deft pewter
#

It's getting more and more accessible by the year but I wouldn't expect my parents or in-laws to set up a home automation system without help.

#

Even with HomeKit/SmartThings/etc.

hushed basalt
#

But that's my point. A ZigBee coordinator stack setup at your parents house 500km away

#

Is a lot riskier than a wifi bulb

clear ferry
#

Wouldn't do either

deft pewter
#

Yeah... please shoot me before I agree to set up home automation for family.

hushed basalt
#

Such loving children :)

#

But my original point which is still valid

#

Is that a coordinator is a single point of failure

#

Nothing you've said has discredited that

#

Other failure domains aren't relevant

#

Anyways I need to work, have fun

deft pewter
#

Man. It's depressing seeing people talk about Covid and vaccines. Just saw a comment on Reddit saying that we shouldn't bother with herd immunity because if someone's so weak that they can't take the vaccine themselves, they aren't fit to live...

odd, I don't walk around thinking everyone is grumpy with a good sex life 🤔

forest edge
#

my god the rpi3 is slooooowww compred to rpi4 with ha lol

shy comet
#

yea im pretty impressed with the one i run at my parents house

subtle pasture
#

Hmm, Pi3 seems fine here, though I'm booting HA from an SSD, not a MicroSD card

shy comet
#

SSD makes a huge difference

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, for sure. I had it on MicroSD initially, and it was seriously slow

shy comet
#

but when u want to run things like tensorflow you need something more like an i5

#

i never looked back since i moved away from a pi lol

subtle pasture
#

Well yeah, I'll look into that when I start feeding cameras into HA

#

That said, people have had tensorflow working on a Pi Zero, which has a 1GHz single-core ARMv6 CPU

shy comet
#

im sure itll run but accuracy and timing are of concern too lol

#

i still get the occasional cat as marked as a person lol

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, just saying, it can actually function on some pretty anemic hardware. A Pi3 has a 1.4GHz quad-core 64bit ARMv8 CPU, which is more than 5x faster than a Pi Zero

#

It could make a passable attempt at running tensorflow 😛

#

I probably wouldn't attempt to have it do object recognition on more than one or two cameras, though

blazing parrot
#

so today my neighbors were gardening near the property line and they cut through my internet fiber. I got a good chaos test of what would work in HA without Internet.

#

All of my zigbee & zwave stuff kept working. Automations kept working. I'm using deCONZ for zigbee & zwave2mqtt for zwave.

#

but I did lose all functionality on my UniFi integrations, so couldn't see device trackers for my wifi devices, and couldn't connect to RTSP feeds on my cameras. I don't know if the block was in HA integrations, in my UniFi infra, or what.

storm summit
#

Yea. If we don't get out soon we're dead.

subtle pasture
#

NASA estimates the Earth only has about 300 million years of habitability left in it for human life. And while large-scale geoengineering could extend that significantly, that still requires us to be competently space-faring to implement.

last dirge
#

but what about that ball of fusion a few million miles away?

subtle pasture
#

The sun is part of the problem. Overall solar output increases slowly over time

storm summit
#

"300 million years of habitability" Seriously? That seems a lot higher than I would expect.

subtle pasture
#

The estimate is 1.75 billion years for ocean life / lower life forms

storm summit
#

Hm. Considering dinosaurs survived less than 300 million years, I'm skeptical.

subtle pasture
#

Endgame: Earth is very likely to go the way of Venus as solar output continues to increase, billions of years before the sun transitions into a red giant

no, it has never disconnected on me

I've used it for.... 4-5 years now

fiery sorrel

#

I use it mostly to install HP-UX these days

fiery sorrel

the issue is mostly with the connector that don't hold the cable enought, and the usb3 cable is thick enough to apply pressur on the connector if not in the exact right angle :(

you get to reimage 3PAR yourself ?

somber ferry
#

Okay i am sure this question is asked enough already but let me still do it

  1. Do any of you use home assistant to sell to a customer. i am planning be an home automation installer and heavily rely on home assistant for all automations. I did not personally face any issues with home assistant. Compare to all other systems like control 4, crestron , RTI or ELAN this would be very cheap
  2. Do you have experience using other systems and what was your experience
fiery sorrel
#

ah snap ...

clear ferry
#

On mostly any product released the last 20 years

#

and a few more

#

@somber ferry many users have mentioned thinking about doing it, very few have returned, so I guess they either gave up or realized users are shit and it will be an endless nightmare

fiery sorrel
#

Yeaa. home assistent is way to open and customisable to be sold as it and managed by the end user.
You will quickly en up in support hell

clear ferry
#

users 🤢

somber ferry
#

@fiery sorrel this is the thing i am most afraid of. I think the support would be a nighmare if there are issues

fiery sorrel
#

Don't sell a product you can't fix yourself.
if you want to have HA as a backend it could be ok, but you'll need to know a lot of python in order to fix issue they might have before the comunity fix them.
You will also have to make a custome lockdown frontend to avoid user playing with it.

#

Usealy if you want to install smarthome, you do it with a techo that have it's own paid support with SLA

#

So you are not the one to refund the client if something is broken for 2 week

clever mortar
#

There's a few forum threads on the topic, that have petered out

#

Post history here and there should have a large stack of good advice on how to do it sensibly were you to want to do it

clear ferry
deft pewter
#

🤔

#

I wonder what accent we'd default to if we weren't doing the British accent.

clever mortar
#

Well, which British accent?

#

I have at least three - one for when dealing with fellow Glaswegian's, one for other Scots, and another for everybody else (since they don't usually understand either of the others)

clear ferry
#

Y'all sounds like Texans when we aren't around

somber ferry
#

@fiery sorrel I can do coding and do some basic fixes. But support is not a very big issue in India, its easy to hire someone and have them check or replace systems. Most of the time if i would do it, i would only go for standard device setup like it was always be only one kind of lights and speakers and so on

#

locking the frontend should be simple i believe

deft pewter
#

Glaswegian has got to be one of the worst accents I've heard. What's the deal with their alphabet?

#

'gee' vs 'jeye'

clear ferry
#

You should take a look at Apalachian then

#

or the swedish Dalarna

#

even the swedes have to text them when they are on TV

#

I went to school with a guy from Sogn in norway, I thought he was russian for the first three weeks

clever mortar
#

The other problem with Glaswegian is that the words tend to run together, at speed...

fiery sorrel

My current car was 1 year old when I bought it, spent about 40% less than buying a new one. My previous one was a very similar deal.

#

Yeah, current one was the garage owner's car for the year (aka "demonstrator" that never made it to the lot). Previous one went to a hire car company for the year, and sat in their lot. Had just under 100 miles on the clock 🤣

subtle pasture

@inner vault at least you can use an auto injector. My meds are intramuscular (the needles are 2" long), so auto-injectors are a no-go

I'm surprised auto-injectors need to go into a sharps container, though. I thought the needle retracted when it was spent?

It'd be interesting to see if you can get one sensitive enough to tell about the presence of an individual blade

subtle pasture
#

Heh, if you could, that'd let you count how many are in there via discreet increases in weight

#

@clever mortar You thinking it could automatically order a refill when the count reaches a predefined number?

clever mortar
#

And remind you that it's been a while since you changed it, so it's probably time to check if it needs replaced

subtle pasture

Ah, yeah, that's a good one

I do have a bad habit of using the same blade too many times

On the other hand they're damn cheap...

Legs come out super smooth
"Why do I always forget to do this..."

#

You'd think there'd be enough positive reinforcement there to remember. lol

deft pewter
#

And remind you that it's been a while since you changed it, so it's probably time to check if it needs replaced
@clever mortar Can we use years in time patterns? 🤔

clever mortar
#

Seems to be how it works for my wife

hollow glacier
#

wife here, can confirm

subtle pasture
#

lol

#

I try to change mine once a week (ish), if only to use all the blades they send me with my subscription

deft pewter
#

Hmoney is Tinkerer's wife? mindblown

clever mortar
#

I usually aim for between half a dozen and a dozen shaves per blade, depending on time between shaves

scenic radish
#

I'm so sorry @hollow glacier

clever mortar
#

For a few months I wasn't shaving at all, experimenting with a beard. Now I'm down to shaving the non-beard bits once or twice a week usually - also known as any time I'm going out

hollow glacier
#

sweetie you know the stubble is like upper lip crack for me <3<3<3

subtle pasture
#

I know I don't get nearly that many uses out of a single blade, but I'm also covering a larger surface area. I wonder if it evens out as far as "total surface area covered" goes

clever mortar
#

It's also a feature of the blade itself, your hair, prep, and how you look after it

#

I spent too long on various shaving forums reading all the science and not-so-science

subtle pasture
#

I'm probably being terrible to my razor. I just leave it in the shower...

clever mortar
#

That's not ideal, but then I don't really care for mine that much either 😄

#

I know what to do, I just don't care enough

subtle pasture
#

Fair. Gotta pick and choose where you're going to expend effort

#

Only so many fucks to give

deft pewter
#

Mine hangs on a stand to dry properly. Even stainless steel corrodes if you don't keep it clean and dry.

clever mortar
#

I used to spend a fortune on cartridge razors and canned "foam". Now I buy DE blades at less than 10p each, and a bar of soap that lasts most of year

#

Yeah, my razor (and brush) is on a stand, but that's about it. I don't dry it out or dip it in oil to get all the water out

subtle pasture
#

+1 for bar soap. I switched from body wash and am never going back

scenic radish
#

What do you think of chest hair @hollow glacier ?

subtle pasture
#

Most liquid body wash is actually detergent, not soap... and my skin tends to hate most detergents

#

Switched to bar soap, suddenly my skin is way, WAY happier... because it's actual soap...

I just use laundry detergent sauce instead of body wash

@hollow glacier incorrect. see right now you have hair in weird places like all over your ears and etc but they are fine, small unnoticeable and as you get older they stop being fine and unnoticeable. they grow and bloom and the next thing you know you gotta learn to shave in places you never though you could

hollow glacier

@subtle pasture cuz .everythingelse was taken other than .host and .network for the name I wanted

It’s a somewhat common name :/

So I use .host for subdomains for stuff I host and .network to hit my UDMP for controller and camera access

Most of the ... for what of a better term ... "non binary" relationships I know are between non-technical folks

deft pewter
#

Oh, people know

#

They just choose to ignore it.

#

I'll admit the whole topic confuses me but mainly because I don't understand why someone would want to change in such a big way. But if they want to change, that's their choice.

subtle pasture
#

Most trans people will tell you it wasn't really a choice

#

I mean, yeah, you can choose not to transition and be miserable / suicidal... sure... I guess...

deft pewter
#

See... I can't even get the language right 😄

#

But my philosophy on pretty much everything is that if it doesn't harm anyone else, it's all fair game.

clever mortar
#

I just wish society as a whole was more accepting

#

It seems to be getting better about it, but I sit in the wrong "group" to make an accurate assessment

deft pewter
#

I think each generation is becoming more tolerant and accepting (that's not to say there aren't older folk who already are). We're definitely heading in the right direction though.

subtle pasture
#

Really depends on which part of the planet you're on

#

It's getting better in some western countries, at least

clever mortar
#

Well, even some of those are making progress, thankfully, sort of

deft pewter
#

Yeah... I know the news has called out some pretty vocal groups in the States lately. I'd hope they're not a majority and just shout the loudest. And then there are countries with terrible human rights (for all, not just for minority groups).

#

It's reassuring to see that even some of the Middle Eastern countries are becoming more progressive.

clever mortar
#

We're all human dammit

subtle pasture
#

This, all of my this ^

deft pewter
#

We've got enough problems to deal with without bringing tribalism into everything.

clever mortar
#

Sadly, it does seem to be human nature to look for those who're the same, vs different

#

And I'll admit, I do look for different...

because shockingly enough, working with people who're the same isn't healthy. I'd rather work with people with different backgrounds/experiences/approaches/world views/etc.

deft pewter
#

It's natural to look for differences. It all comes down to the very primal instinct of recognising friend or foe. But we need to be conscious of it and not allow it to bias our feelings.

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter I feel like a lot of it comes down to religiosity and toxic masculinity

clever mortar
#

Really hard to avoid bias - I'm doing a stack of unconscious bias and similar training right now, and it hurts to realise how bad I am at some of this stuff

#

And I care...

deft pewter
#

Eh... I'd disagree that 'men' are to blame. It's really easy to just pin it on one gender and label them all as the problem. That in itself is just tribalistic and is going to cause more animosity.

subtle pasture
#

Oh, I didn't say men were to blame

#

I said toxic masculinity

clever mortar
#

I'd agree with toxic X in general

subtle pasture
#

Toxic masculinity hurts men

deft pewter
#

I can recognise that women aren't always treated fairly but it still triggers me when people bring up men being the issue.

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter Again, not taking issue with men, I'm taking issue with how men are treated by society

deft pewter
#

By whom? Masculinity implies it's men.

#

I know you're not saying all men.

subtle pasture
#

Toxic masculinity = the idea that all men must fit the male stereotype

#

And if you don't, you're shunned

deft pewter
#

I understand that. But it's perpetuated by men, right? So... men are the problem.

inner vault
#

it's a systemic thing, that can even be propagted by women

clear ferry
#

I hardly even fit in my chair 🤕

subtle pasture
#

It's perpetuated by more than just men...

inner vault
#

like "why won't he fight for me" etc

subtle pasture
#

The second you see a mother rip a doll out of their son's hands because "boys don't play with dolls!" you've seen toxic masculinity

#

And it escalates from there

deft pewter
#

I guess. I'd still see that more as gender roles than as masculinity.

#

To me, the masculinity stuff is all about machismo behaviour. 'Men should be strong'. 'Men shouldn't cry'

subtle pasture
#

yeah, and neither of those are true either

deft pewter
#

Agreed

clear ferry
#

My daughter loves trucks and lorries 🥳

subtle pasture
#

But society REALLY tries to force boys into those boxes, and it's harmful

deft pewter
#

And I know we'll all have had different experiences and as such will have our own perspective on this... but I don't feel like any of the women in my life contributed to any of my masculinity. It was all the guys I grew up with.

@deft pewter yea its a great app i love it

teh homepage has grown a lot over time too

There's a lot more to this than I thought. Even if it was just the tabs, that would be cool. I'm going to try to figure out this homepage now.

shy comet

umm could be im not sure im not using docker maybe it doesnt have access?

Hmm. I think it's because I'm telling it to look at localhost 🤣

you can use service names as dns

deft pewter
#

Organizr is the only thing I'm running that lives in a Docker container. The rest are running as Windows services.

brisk glen
#

ah.... god help you

deft pewter
#

I'll try to remember that if I set up multiple containers though.

brisk glen
#

I use nginx and I use the service names for routing

scenic radish
#

localhost should work with host networking btw

brisk glen
#

indeed but who uses host networking? 😛

deft pewter
#

Maybe I should have given that this talks to a bunch of stuff on localhost 🤷‍♂️

scenic radish
#

I do lol

brisk glen
#

@deft pewter in your case yes lol

#

or use the servers static ip

#

the linux host should still route internaly

#

should...

deft pewter
#

It's all done now. Can't be bothered changing things yet 😄

#

But thank you for the tips.

brisk glen
#

hold up

deft pewter
brisk glen
#

you said windows

#

is this docker desktop?

deft pewter
#

Yeah...

brisk glen
#

so you can not use host networking

deft pewter
#

Makes my decision not to use it even easier then 🤣

brisk glen
#

just use the windows static ip or localhost if that works now

#

windows should route internaly

#

then again it might depend on the eddition

#

💩

deft pewter
#

Yeah, I'm using the IP of the host machine now. Works fine.

scenic radish
#

Oh I didn't catch the windows part

deft pewter
#

Oooo... December... The Expanse S05 😮

Alice in Borderland might be fun too.

jade tartan
#

there any HA widgets for win10?

#

randomly had the idea of putting the switch for the light i use on the desktop popout rather then going to the webpage

deft pewter
#

HA support would be... thataway

jade tartan
#

yeah just looking for a yes or a no

#

like do home assistant widgets exsist for win10?

deft pewter
jade tartan
#

brisk glen

#

found what I need for HA and thread

deft pewter
#

Only $49? Nice

#

Out of stock? 🤢

brisk glen
#

covid 19 🤮

#

as soon as I can get one, I can document homekit thread support for eventual support in HA 😛

sharp spire
#

HA could really use a scheduled thermostat component

#

making a dozen automations doesn't really cut it

wet pilot
#

i think there's a thing for appdaemon for it

sharp spire
#

heaty right?

#

problem with that is the UI

wet pilot
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

green inlet
#

When it is hot, turn on the air. When it is cool, turn on the heat.

#

But alas, I am a simple man

sharp spire
#

that doesn't work so well when it takes 2 hours to heat

#

and I don't want to waste energy heating at night/when I'm out

green inlet
#

Auh, you live at the North Pole? When no one is home, turn it off

#

Or Norway.

sharp spire
#

New England with hot water radiators

green inlet
#

Auh....just curious, how are you compensating. It doesn’t have set points with + or -

sharp spire
#

well right now I have programming with nests thermostats

green inlet
#

I also have nest.

#

Very easy

#

Disable to nest learning and use automations

sharp spire
#

nest is nice because if I tell it I want it to be warm at 6pm when I get home, it'll start heating at 3 if it's super cold

#

I'd need a whole bunch of automations

wet pilot
#

ecobee does that too

green inlet
#

Now I am confused. You could just use the nest auto programming. Thought you want to do it in HAss

sharp spire
#

I have it with nest now, but I have secondary heating systems that don't integrate with nest

#

and if I could get rid of nest and have something entirely local, I'd prefer that

Anybody here familiar with JavaScript? Trying to figure out how to pass service_data as part of a POST ...

#

(to the HA API)

green inlet
#

Use conditions and time pattern

#

Same thing.

#

Have it check every ten minutes between hours you want with temp conditions

wet pilot
#

@molten osprey just need to post a json payload

sharp spire
#

I'm sure my wife will love setting that up if we need to make a change to the schedule

molten osprey
#
      headerFields: {
          'Authorization': 'Bearer '.concat(settings.homeassistant.key),
          'Content-Type' : 'application/json'
      },
      resultType: 'json'
    });```
last dirge
#

your mom posts a JSON payload

molten osprey
#

@wet pilot How do I insert that into the request there? pardon the ignorance

wet pilot
#

that i'm not sure, haven't messed with JS much

molten osprey
#

Ok 🙂

wet pilot
#

but nothing fancy going on. Just however you'd send a payload via that HTTP lib

last dirge
#

what library is it?

molten osprey
#

@last dirge Does HTTP sound like an answer to that question?

last dirge
#

that's a pretty much useless search term though

molten osprey
#

i've found this 😄

green inlet
#

@sharp spire , ok, guess you just here to rant. All good.

last dirge
#

is it node?

molten osprey
#

I'm trying to find out. This is within the confines of an application I use called 'LaunchBar', so let me try and find out.

last dirge
#

that project?

sharp spire
#

@green inlet basically - hoping someone would know of a new custom component

molten osprey
#

"Oh"

#

There is a postJSON available

#

🙂

wet pilot
#

that's what you would want

molten osprey
#

Sorry for the trouble!

last dirge
#

well, at least in that

wet pilot
#

no worries, everyone starts somewhere

last dirge
#

I don't know if you've got that same thing, that's just a gist

green inlet
#

But @last dirge , working a mom joke into JSON though

last dirge
#

are you running >= v 6.1?

molten osprey
#

yes

last dirge
#

this API sucks

molten osprey
#

it is what it is ... LaunchBar is the shitz

last dirge
#

so you'd have to put it in options

#

in the body

#

this documentation blows

molten osprey
#

🙂

last dirge
#

and it doesn't say whether or not it'll auto-marshall to JSON from the object

#

so, probably stringify it first

wet pilot
#

looks like it will

molten osprey
#

So I call /api/services/script/turn_on to run a script, putting entity_id in the parameters?

scenic radish
molten osprey
#

Sorry.

#

(Yes, that works)

#

Thanks chaps!

#

I can now run any script from LaunchBar!

errant bough
#

I have my music library on Nextcloud and the closest thing I have to Plex would be a Pi running Volumio. Is there any way I can cast music to a Google Home conveniently? Can I mount my music directory into HA's media browser feature and cast from there or something?

last dirge
#

haha

molten osprey
#

In case anybody got curious about LaunchBar 😉

last dirge
#

you look thrilled

molten osprey
#

jesus ... wth with the photo!!!

wet pilot
#

lol your GH profile pic

molten osprey
#

sorry about that haha

wet pilot
#

you can remove it from here if you want

molten osprey
#

the photo is 12 years old

wet pilot
#

(or i can if you want)

molten osprey
#

what, you dont think i used to be handsome? 😉

wet pilot
#

heh

molten osprey
#

i have no idea how to remove it ... but yeah

#

(yes, i realize postAPI_JSON and postAPI are very similar, but I'm too lazy to try and figure out if it can be merged into a single function)

wet pilot
#

i got you

#

for future, if you won't want previews to pop wrap the url in <>

last dirge
#

or click the X after it posts

#

either way

wet pilot
#

via desktop that works. not sure if it does via mobile

molten osprey
#

I actually knew that

last dirge
#

haha

molten osprey
#

(the <> trick)

last dirge
#

that picture was probably hilariously huge on mobile

molten osprey

it was on my desktop app too

#

I don't know why I post stuff on GitHub. My stuff is so super basic.

storm canyon
#

Greetings so what is the purpose of having a temperature sensor in each room of your house if you have a whole home heating and air conditioning system? Just to provide knowledge?

clever mortar
#

You could use it to tell where you need to adjust a radiator/close a window

storm canyon
#

I have never lived in a house in the US with radiators in every room, so I guess it would mean motorizing the vents or opening/closing them to adjust temperatures. That makes sense

clever mortar
#

UK here... radiators in every room

#

They've got a thermostatic valve attached that you can adjust to control the temperature

#

In theory you set them to, say, 3 and then they allow the room to warm up to 20C. In reality all are slightly different, and each room is different. So while it might be 20C by the radiator, it may be 22C, or 18C, further away

clear ferry
#

Normal for most homes in the world

#

Except the us exceptionalism ;-)

storm canyon
#

@clear ferry not sure the reason for the second comment but to each their own I guess

hushed basalt
#

Houses don't exists in vacuums

#

External factors play a huge part

#

Orientation of windows, thermal stack, insulation properties between floor/ground, walls, ceiling, ceiling/floor

#

Lots of places for a house to have quite a temperature gradient even with a whole house system running

#

Lots of useful data there

clear ferry
#

Insulation ?

#

In Australia ?

#

I would never...

hushed basalt

#

are you happy @clear ferry ? 😘

clear ferry
#

Yaaaaaaas queen

storm canyon
#

@hushed basalt that is all very true. I guess from a data gathering standpoint I can see the desire to have temperature controls in each room. They are not expensive to make so I guess I will make some and then see what I do with the data and if it affects how I operate in the house

clear ferry
#

Reminds me, I was supposed to help a friend with the only american style heating house I know of make it smarter

#

but corona

hearty depot
inner vault
#

as a canadian with hot water radiators, I'm super jealous of UK systems with individual thermostatic valves, that's not a thing here at all

#

also places that sell the smart valves don't sell to canada. I'm not sure if it's a regulatory thing, or the systems are designed differently or what.

#

that said, I wouldn't be surprised if all of my radiators were plumbed in series which would probably not work so well with individual valves

midnight adder
#

i live in eastern europe where it's rather cold. we have hot water radiators with central heating system, but also valves with sensors that talk to the mothership, you can't totally close them if it's too cold they increase the pressure.

clear ferry
#

@inner vault then you will probably have loved the Norwegian houses of the 80s with electric radiators in every room

inner vault
#

eh, my first house had electric radiators in each room, I decided not to "smart" them, because I would have needed 9 line voltage smart thermostats haha
