Under EU law, within the legal guarantee period of two years, defective products must be repaired or replaced without any cost to the consumer.

orchid rose
#

Quick google search found a news story from 2016 where the consumer ombudsman decided that a 159€ phone should have worked for more than 2½ years

dusky plank
#

they already include "wearing electronics", so for batteries its minimum 6 months or sth

deft pewter
#

'legal guarantee period'

#

There's also the concept of consumer rights. This is where it varies, the UK will hear cases up to 5 years.

#

But warranties are clear cut. 2 years.

orchid rose
#

Can you give me the source for that?

#

nvm, found it

deft pewter

Your Europe - Citizens

FAQs - When does the two-year legal guarantee start? Can I ask for a refund? Can I get the item repaired or replaced? Can I cancel my plane, train or concert tickets? Who pays for shipping costs if I need to return faulty goods? What about buying goods via an on-line auction: ...

#

Doesn't get much more authoritative than that 😉

orchid rose
#

After 6 months, you can still hold the seller responsible for any defects up to the end of the two-year guarantee period. However, the seller can ask you to prove that the defect existed when your goods were delivered. This is often difficult, and you will may have to involve a technical expert.

deft pewter
#

Realistically, they'll never contest it.

orchid rose
#

I wouldn't be so sure

deft pewter
#

There's also the expectation that modern goods last well more than 2 years, else they simply weren't well-made.

clear ferry
#

We have 5 year "warranty" on all electronics

#

Including phones

deft pewter
#

For something to develop a defect inside 2 years suggests the manufacturing was subpar.

clear ferry
#

Including hard drives too

orchid rose
#

But legally they can fight you for it so it's not guaranteed by law then

clear ferry
#

Just replaced 3 of my 4TB drives

#

4.5 years old

deft pewter
#

Anecdotally, I've never had a seller refuse a repair/return inside the warranty period.

orchid rose
#

Well most often you get the same length of warranty from the manufacturer anyway so it's pretty clear

#

But I would expect it to become an issue in some cases

deft pewter
#

And that's where it sometimes gets tricky... if the seller and manufacturer offer different terms.

#

I've heard of people being passed around between seller and manufacturer to find a resolution.

orchid rose
#

Yeah happens a lot

deft pewter
#

You'll hear about it a lot. Always do with negative stuff.

#

What you don't hear are all the millions of easy returns.

orchid rose
#

Oh sure, I'm not saying that the system is broken or anything like that

#

But it can be confusing in some cases

deft pewter
#

But yeah... this is why I said use a chargeback. UK law (and I guess EU law) is pretty handy... if you tell your credit card issuer to open a dispute with the seller, it's between them two now.

#

Technically, your credit card issuer was the one that bought the goods. Their problem.

orchid rose
#

Honestly everything I have bought recently has worked so well that I've stopped caring about all that really

#

Unless it comes defected which sometimes still happens

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I haven't had a dispute with a seller about goods within 5 years since.... Ever

deft pewter
#

Because the good ones care about their reputation more than they do about a small payout.

#

They stand to lose way more from bad publicity.

HAhaha

#

Yeah. They have some comedically absurd systems

wild grove
#

is that corrugated metal acting as a diffuser, or did you rob a chipotle? wouldnt it ring a lot?

vital fjord
#

hahahah

#

It's a light fixture, actually

#

Probably the most successful piece I've made in here

#

And it was like 2 hours work

orchid rose
#

am I the only one triggered by the placement of the woofer above the tweeter?

vital fjord
#

Supposedly helps with time sync

wild grove
#

all depends on the room

orchid rose
#

not sure I get it but okay

vital fjord
#

Yeah, me neither. But these were all the rage among audiophiles like 7 years ago, so 🤷

wild grove
#

his loudspeaker should be full frequency so the sub xover should be set low enough that it has no particular source to the listener.

vital fjord
#

I'm just like "they make noise be good in my ear places"

wild grove
#

ear holes is the technical term

vital fjord
#

Yep

orchid rose
#

I don't mean the subwoofer, I mean the woofer on the speaker

#

It's suboptimal anyway to have multiple sound sources

wild grove
#

ah, yeah thats odd - dont see that a lot

orchid rose
#

I'm sure you can come up with reasons for it, but it looks weird when you're used to it being the other way around

wild grove
#

it makes them top heavy so they fall on kids and pets easier?

shy comet
#

highs, mids and lows @orchid rose not really suboptimal there

orchid rose
#

you'll have combing (right term?) no matter what if you have more than one speaker

vital fjord
#

Luckily, I'm relatively new to this "giving a shit" about speakers thing so to me it's just ear gravy

shy comet
#

different woofers produce different frequencies and some of which are reserved for towers and sound better.....a real sub is meant for those lower frequencies like 90hz and below

#

@vital fjord same here i just bought a bunch of Klipsch speakers when Frys has their weekly 50% off sale lol

#

tower speakers are hands down the best purchase for audio

#

i was shocked at how much of a difference it provided

vital fjord
#

Yeah, I almost went Klipsch for my center

#

But then I bought into all the timbre hype

shy comet
#

do you got an atmos setup?

vital fjord
wild grove
#

decent speakers properly placed in room is an awesome.

vital fjord
#

Not sure if he goes into the design of subs on top

wild grove
#

i would strongly recommend you look at room treatments

vital fjord
#

do you got an atmos setup?
@shy comet Yep!

deft pewter
#

Does the pothos not ruin the acoustics?#

wild grove
#
  1. room dimensions, 2) room treatments, 3) speaker placement are the order I would prioritize the things for a good sounding setup. then you can worry about things like eq to correct the first 3 things then gear is after that
vital fjord
#

Currently only a 5.1.2, but once the Denon that gives me 4 ceiling speakers drops in price I'll upgrade

shy comet
#

@wild grove the nice part about 3d audio is part 3 isnt important anymore

#

because it moves from channel based audio to object based

wild grove
#

true, my comment was more for 2 channel listening

shy comet
#

ooh ok

vital fjord
#

i would strongly recommend you look at room treatments
@wild grove Yeah, I'll definitely be looking into that. My space is just one big lofted rectangle

shy comet

@vital fjord same here 5.1.2

vital fjord
#

Mine are a few degrees forward of center

shy comet
#

DAMN

wild grove
#

im scared to cut holes in ceiling

#

so right now its still 5.1

shy comet

i was lucky the house i moved into had ceiling speakers taht were meant to be surround but the room was odd like that so i converted it

vital fjord
#

Oh. Each speaker in my 5.1.2 is a soundbar, actually

wild grove
#

i love the feeling when listening to music and you have to double check the center is in fact not producing sound.

vital fjord
#

Including sub

orchid rose

so with a virtual sound system that's 5+1+2 * 7.1 = 64 channel, nice

shy comet

my wife loves me and allowed me to get a 15" woofer lol

wild grove

you mean a speaker right

@deft pewter it's in the topic there. Both Hopin and the official landing page should contain the schedule, it's being worked on

wild grove

love that data, type of thing being washed, cycle, and time remaining .

#

i used a vibration sensor on the dryer to know when its done :/

gilded stream
#

I tend to leave clothes in the wash for too long after it's done, so I set up a reminder. If the washer completes, but the dryer hasn't started for an hour, my alexia devices will let me know. After 1.5 hours, I get an email.

#

When we bought our smart washer/dryer we never expected to actually do anything with the smart stuff, lol.

subtle pasture
#

@wild grove I gave up on vibration sensors, too unreliable. A smart-plug with power monitoring is rock-solid

#

Or, if you're dealing with a 240v dryer, a temperature sensor stuck to the back, directly above the dryer hose outlet.

scenic radish
#

Ah, that's a clever solution if a smart plug isn't an option

subtle pasture
#

I use that solution on my dishwasher. Temperature sensor stuck to it directly above the steam vent

#

When it vents steam, the sensor maxes out. Dishes are done!

wild grove
#

@subtle pasture vibration has been rock solid (ha) for me

#

i built one with an old rpi 1 i had sitting around and a sw420 or 240 or something like that

shy comet
#

Dishes are done is such a critical notification in case u forget if you did them or not

subtle pasture
#

I tried everything to get vibration sensors to read reliably... too many false positives

shy comet
#

thats where notification history is important ahha

scenic radish
#

Nope, you're required to get rid of the vibration sensor @wild grove

#

Smart plug or temp sensor only

subtle pasture
#

Even someone unloading the laundry could cause enough vibration events to read as "running" again

#

And there was no good way to filter that out

shy comet
#

you have to go by timing with vibration and power meters

subtle pasture
#

Nah, smart plug was easier 😛

shy comet
#

i keep mine with a 5 min for statement

#

smart plugs too....depends on the washer

wild grove
#

i hacked up a python script i found online. if i recall it ha some hold done stuff so i dont get start/stops w/ random vibrations

shy comet
#

like if your washer goes to 0 for a minute during cycle

#

you have to account for that

subtle pasture
#

My washer never goes to 0 unless I turn the nob on the front to "off"

shy comet
#

my dishwasher does that multiple times in a cycle

#

yea thats the thing you have to monitor the appliances behavior LOL

wild grove
#

or that lg thing someone just linked direct api integration

subtle pasture
#

Wasn't hard, honestly... not anywhere near as problematic as a vibration sensor...

shy comet
#

ye for sure

#

all i do is increase the for by a minute if a certain cycle behaves differently

subtle pasture
#

Like, i literally tried for weeks to get reliable laundry notifications out of vibration sensors. It never worked well enough to depend on it.

#

Especially because the balance of each individual load could result in more or fewer vibration events being detected.

shy comet
#

i think they worked well on the really old models that would shake the house lol

subtle pasture
#

Some loads barely triggered the sensors, others were constant events.

shy comet
#

like the top load washers

deft pewter
#

My washing machine only shakes violently when I put too many body parts in.

subtle pasture
#

lol

shy comet
#

damn i hated top load washers LOL

scenic radish
#

Love my top loader

#

No vibration issues unless I overload the washer with bulky stuff and even then it's not a guarantee

subtle pasture
#

I actually miss top loaders...

#

You could open them mid-cycle without flooding the room >_>

#

Front loaders lock, and have to be drained, if you need to open them for any reason

wild grove
#

speedqueen if in the us

inner vault
#

the last washer we bought new was specifically a HE toploader, it didn't have an agitator, which was wild, but it worked fine.

#

because screw everythign about moldy smelling front loading washers

shy comet
#

You could open them mid-cycle without flooding the room >_>
lol my washer locks the door until the water is drained 😛

subtle pasture
#

lol, yeah, gotta leave the door open on a front-loader to let it air out between loads

inner vault
#

we sold that one with the house and our new place came with ancient washer and dryer that work way better than brand new HE ones - and our electricity and water are cheap af in quebec... so we're just going to stick with them until they die a horrible death

subtle pasture
#

@shy comet The number of times I've realized something slipped into a load that shouldn't have, just as second after the door locks, is too damn high...

shy comet
#

yea ive had to run to the garage at the request of the wife one too many times

#

i actually account for washer or dryer running for the "done" notification too so i dont waste my time making the trip

#

no point in going out to the washer if the dryer is still running or vice versa

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I only notify that "the laundry has finished" if the washer and dryer are both not in the "running" state

#

There's also a cooldown on the automation so it won't alert twice if the machines finish within 5 minutes of one another

shy comet
subtle pasture
#

Hah, just be warned, those notifications won't display correctly on all platforms...

#

Android and iOS treat notifications very differently

shy comet
#

emojis shoudl display in iOS the same i thought

#

they are unicode characters

shy comet

Well that's fine for Norway... the rest of the world are still catching up.

subtle pasture

Or going backwards, as the case may be...

deft pewter
#

Speak for yourself

subtle pasture
#

California is moving away from nuclear power, which is a bad move IMHO

deft pewter
#

Yeah, nuclear and renewables are the way forward. Kinda lame to go backwards.

#

I didn't realise until recently that most of the UK's nuclear plants go out of commission around 2035... we're going to struggle to get more online in time.

subtle pasture
#

We could cover all of our energy needs, for the entire state, and stop importing power... with the addition of 3 modern nuclear plants

#

But instead we're going to invest 10x the money into solar and energy storage facilities :/

#

Doesn't make any sense to me, personally

deft pewter
#

Solar's good... and I get why some people don't like the scary nuclear stuff.

clear ferry
#

We shut down our only nuclear power plant last year, never produced power, we used it to irradiate some medical stuff

deft pewter
#

Should do it the Norwegian way instead though. Brown cheese furnaces.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, but if they'd let us build modern plants, they'd be a lot less scary than the old ones we're forced to keep operating because they aren't being allowed to replace them...

subtle pasture
#

And I'm all for solar, but it requires vast energy storage reserves more than 50% of the time in order to provide stable power

deft pewter
#

Yes... production on demand makes more sense.

subtle pasture
#

It's a good adjunct for dealing with additional load during daylight hours... except it isn't, because peak load sets in the same hour that solar efficiency starts to slump due to the sun setting

gilded stream
#

[duck curve intensifies]

subtle pasture
#

But yeah, tldr: We need 3 nuclear plants for complete state-wide energy independence, but most voters aren't educated on the topic and have the knee-jerk "Chernobyl scary!" reaction any time it comes up.

young sigil
#

Do the modern reactor designs still require waste to be stored safely for tens of thousands of years? Because I don't trust most politicians to plan past next week.

subtle pasture
#

Modern reactor designs use the fuel in stages. Old plants, the fuel is considered "spent" with tons of fissile material remaining. New designs can continue using that fuel

#

So by the time it's actually considered waste, it's a far more-spent and less-dangerous product

#

Still has to be stored for a good long time, but you get a LOT more use out of the same hunk of uranium

deft pewter
#

But you still end up with waste that takes tends of thousands of years to become safe... 😉

#

I'm not arguing that it's not a good thing but there are still the same downsides.

subtle pasture
#

You do, but it's several orders of magnitude less waste than the old plants

#

Like, we could literally haul up old nuclear waste and re-burn it with new plants...

#

We wouldn't need to make any new nuclear waste for a century

#

What part of this is a bad idea?

deft pewter
#

I'm still hoping for cold fusion. They're still building that experimental reactor in Europe, right? Like, they just finished assembling the core stuff this year?

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, the issue with fusion is containing the plasma...

deft pewter
subtle pasture
#

You need to generate one hell of an electromagnetic field to keep the plasma toroid from impacting (and destroying) the walls of the reactor chamber. Said field (usually) takes more power to maintain than the reaction itself generates.

last cedar
#

Reusing old nuclear waste sounds amazing tbh

subtle pasture
#

Oh, and fusion still generates ionizing radiation... so it's still not a totally clean process

gilded stream

deft pewter
#

What about Zero Point Modules?

subtle pasture
#

Strictly speaking, zero point energy risks the destruction of the universe...

deft pewter
#

Well... only if you mess it up.

#

That almost never happens.

last cedar
#

I think buttered toast cat generators are probably the best energy source

gilded stream
#

Hmm... we've only got one of those, though

subtle pasture
#

Zero point energy implies that the universe itself is a false vacuum (which appears to be the case, going by the estimated mass of the Higgs boson). That, unfortunately, leaves open the possibility of a bubble of lower-energy space (true vaccum) nucleating within our own universe. Such a bubble, once formed, would then expand at the speed of light, rewriting the laws of physics as it goes, and destroying everything in its path.

#

I wouldn't fuck around with zero point energy, is what I'm saying...

last cedar
#

Isn't that what caused Gordon Freeman all his problems?

subtle pasture
#

Nah, but they do mention that the Gravity Gun runs on zero point energy

#

Which means Gordon is running around with a potentially universe-ending device

last cedar
#

Aha! I knew it had something to do with that amazing game

deft pewter
#

Also Stargate 😉

gilded stream
#

I had never once heard of zero point energy

last cedar
#

I wonder where we will be in 20 years energy wise tbh

last cedar
#

Electric cars are being shoved down our throats atm, maybe we won't even have enough electric production to charge them all?

subtle pasture
#

Also, being able to harness zero point energy would immediately put us off the end of the Kardashev scale (and then some)

#

So that's fun, lol

...whoa that could explain a lot

subtle pasture
#

Hmm?

gilded stream
#

Tier 3 or 4 societies would be easy to spot, but we don't observe any signs of those. Maybe that's because aliens don't need none of that and are sitting pretty with their zero point clothes dryers

#

Helps explain the Fermi Paradox too

last cedar
#

Imagine your zero point dryer being a smart dryer

gilded stream
#

Yeah how could HASS take advantage of this?

last cedar

#

Then nothing

Or

I don't actually know the answer to that question, Michelle. I should see if it has some kind of fire detection software. I have a smoke detector in my laundry room for fire checking redundancy

subtle pasture
#

@gilded stream A civilization using energy on that scale should be easy to spot... it would also throw the law of conservation of energy out of whack

gilded stream

I know, I know. Maybe they should improve their apps...

dusky plank
#

our isps just block dns, google or cloudflare are enough to work around

clear ferry
#

Norway blocks no torrent or privacy sites

deft pewter
#

I don't know what my ISP is doing. Changing DNS isn't enough (I never use ISP DNS anyway).

clear ferry
#

And if copyright holders contact isps, they just flip them off

deft pewter
#

Norway was one of the first I tried. I know you guys are pretty liberal 😄

clear ferry
#

To be fair, we block something country side, anything marked as child trafficking or pornography is blocked in all country dns` afaik

static schooner
#

you can't even get to the website?

deft pewter
#

Pornography and child trafficking? One of those things is bad.

clear ferry
#

Afaik you are greeted with a message from the police

#

Not regular pornography..

#

That is fine

deft pewter
#

I know.. .I deliberately switched it around 😉

clear ferry
#

Google translate on this has the info @static schooner

deft pewter
#

I can't decide if I like that or not...

#

On the one hand, it means you're not passing details of users to the police that just clicked the wrong link. On the other hand, you're missing a huge chance to arrest a load of perverts.

last cedar
#

The world would stop turning if porn was banned

deft pewter
#

Most of us will agree that some kinds should be.

last cedar
#

Well, yes

deft pewter
#

Furries... eww

clear ferry
#

I often send unsolicited disk pictures

shy comet
#

so much chat of torrents in here....what about usenet? 🤔

clear ferry
#

I have moved everything over to Usenet mostly

deft pewter
#

Already got Usenet set up... I just want torrents for the occasional stuff I can't find.

last cedar
#

I use usenet instead of torrents

shy comet
#

@deft pewter how many indexers?

last cedar
#

Great for linux iso

clear ferry
#

Only keep torrents for the obscure music dvds I gather

shy comet
#

black friday is coming up i normally stock up on those lifetime sites lol

last cedar
#

Oh, that is a thing?

shy comet
#

yup

last cedar
#

I think I have 2 lifetime ones

shy comet
#

/r/usenet will have them all 🙂

last cedar
#

Was unaware there were a lot

deft pewter
#

Enough to last two lifetimes. 😄

shy comet
#

nzbgeek is probably the best life time one i have

last cedar
#

Racoons have short lifetimes unfortunately

deft pewter
#

@deft pewter how many indexers?
@shy comet Just one for now. It finds most things I want. NZBGeek.

shy comet
#

i find dognzb to be pretty good but pricey

last cedar
#

I think I have geek and cat

shy comet
#

drunkenslug has been great for me

last cedar
#

Drunkenslug

#

Hahahahaha

deft pewter
#

I'll look out for lifetime deals, thanks for the tip. I only have a lifetime VPN so far.

shy comet
#

i love nzbhydra for getting these nerd stats

deft pewter
#

lol... is that just to show where your pulls came from?

shy comet
#

yea which ones had the most downloads

#

downloads per indexer

#

nzbhydra is a indexer aggregator....keeps it all in one place...i love having a single search site for 4k rips when i do my searches

last cedar
#

Nzbcat and dognzb shouldn't be next to each other. They will fight

shy comet
#

lmao

deft pewter
#

Yeah... I'm using Jackett as a torrent aggregator. KAT is still working (on VPN), I just can't get a working connection to TPB 😦

clear ferry
#

I only have two indexers, need to get a few more then

shy comet
#

i find it important to have multiple because they all dont have the same data

last cedar
#

Mmmm

shy comet
#

i also found your provider is important too

#

Frugal usenet does not do Auto DMCA

#

must be mailed in

#

astraweb when i had them did auto DMCA and you can see things only a few hours old getting hit

bitter pawn
#

hmm

#

atx's camera is mainly focused on the kiddie slide

#

now is that your slide or your neighbors?

bitter pawn
#

lolololololz xD

clear ferry
bitter pawn
deft pewter
#

Exactly. A little too far back and... whoops!

last cedar
#

That is one of the worst positioned cameras in the history of cameras. Or positioning.

#

But it is a camera

clear ferry
#

It's me

#

On a ladder

bitter pawn
#

i mean if you want to focus on the kiddie slide or the christmas lights, you got it dude

clear ferry
#

Mounting the Christmas lights

bitter pawn
#

😄

clear ferry
#

🧐

last cedar
#

You have christmas lights!?

clear ferry
#

Mounted 200 so far

last cedar
#

200 christmasses?

#

Or cameras

#

Or ladders

bitter pawn
#

200 cameras

last cedar
#

Damn

bitter pawn

Nuclear power station

#

Why does corona have to mess up my moving plans :/ very annoyed that when you finally save up enough to make a bank touch you with a barge pole, house prises mean that you can't actually afford to buy anything

deft pewter
#

Prices in your area went up? 😦

mortal cairn
#

Hi

last cedar
#

Up about 10% on average in the whole municipality

#

Meanwhile I have been given a number that would normally be enough to live within 30km of work. But it looks like I have to increase that to 50km just to keep under budget

#

Very tough to get on the ladder

#

Especially right now

bitter pawn
#

oof

#

that sucks my dude

#

i blame atx for such shenanigans

young sigil
#

You could deflate prices in the area you want by rummaging through the bins and spilling them everywhere. Climb inside roof cavities, rip up the insulation and defecate everywhere. Sprinkle a bit of rabies and canine distemper into the bargain and you'll living where you want in no time.

forest edge
#

@clear ferry you tell these fools only American's are allowed to give you so much shit lol

deft pewter
#

Even once you're on the ladder, the struggle isn't ever truly over. If you're trying to upsize and everything goes up 10%, the gap is 10% bigger too.

#

People talk like once you're on the ladder, you move with it... that's not really true.

#

Though I do appreciate the struggle of paying rent and trying to save.

subtle pasture
#

@young sigil Or just sneak in with a large sharpie and write "Asbestos" on the underside of anything that could be suspect

bitter pawn
#

pffft

#

i am american. so i guess im allowed

#

xD

#

#murrica

midnight adder
forest edge
#

ok that is a pretty grim picture. like some dumbass thinking he'll get himself before covid does or something

midnight adder
#

best picture of the year. raises so many questions, that is why it's good

young sigil
#

@young sigil Or just sneak in with a large sharpie and write "Asbestos" on the underside of anything that could be suspect
@subtle pasture I suppose if trash pandas can type they can use a Texta.

midnight adder
#

did i put this in here yet 😇

scenic radish
#

"audio-visual auto-alert" lol

light trout
#

Been shared here a few times in the past

midnight adder
#

quite probably, i do still find it amusing always

scenic radish
#

geez, way to be a, as they say, spoilsport @light trout

#

you're probably one of those guys that screams REPOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on reddit

#

even though not everyone has seen every single thing ever posted on reddit

#

😛

midnight adder
#

i for one, have not

light trout
#

I'm not sure I have even posted a single thing there

scenic radish

just yanking your ⛓️

midnight adder

subtle pasture
#

Fighting with an old HDHomeRun right now... keeps bootlooping

#

"Unplug your modem, update the firmware, then plug your modem back in"

#

That's... certainly a solution...

midnight adder
subtle pasture
#

Alternative solution that doesn't involve taking down the entire network: Give the HDHomeRun a static DHCP lease with custom (invalid) gateway and DNS settings...

#

Actually worked, too. Was able to update the firmware because the device couldn't reach the internet with an invalid gateway + invalid DNS

midnight adder
#

you can't assign static dhcp lease without rebooting the whole network?

subtle pasture
#

I can, that was the point

#

Their original suggestion was to unplug my cable modem in order to update the firmware on the device...

midnight adder
#

ah, silly

clear ferry
#

I looked at the hdhomerun, but then I realized linear TV was dead and cancelled my TV subscription after not watching that much TV the last 10 years

#

Hardware looks good though

subtle pasture
#

HDHomeRun also works for free OTA channels, just FYI

#

I had an old one in a box, figured I'd see what it scans

clear ferry
#

They don't exist here the last 15 years

midnight adder
#

really?

subtle pasture
#

Heh, weird

midnight adder
#

none?

clear ferry
#

Everything has been turned over to IP based

subtle pasture
#

Not a single digital VHF station?

midnight adder
#

we at least have some sd news and local rubbish

clear ferry
#

We have dismantled all FM towers too

subtle pasture
#

...instead of going to digital FM?

#

Weird...

clear ferry
#

We went to dab

midnight adder
#

where on earth do you live, sounds very modern

clear ferry
#

Norway

midnight adder
#

ah

clear ferry
#

@midnight adder landlines stopped selling over 10 years ago too, and frankly I haven't used a physical telephone outside of dark sites the last 13 years

midnight adder
#

we still have a thriving medium wave and long wave bands for radio, not what it was though

subtle pasture
#

Ah, interesting. Looks like most of the word adopted DAB, while the US adopted HD Radio (which piggybacks on existing FM tech and remains backwards-compatible)

midnight adder
#

yeah HD Radio is cool

#

dab is all AAC . tinny

subtle pasture
#

HD Radio can be tinny too, depending on how the broadcaster allocated bandwidth

clear ferry
#

All cars have come with dab here for the last.. 6-7 years atleast, that said I listen so little to radio anyway, I stream 10-15GB of audio a month usually

subtle pasture
#

They can broadcast one analog FM and up to 4 low-quality HD Radio stations (which all sound crap) all together

#

Or as little as one analog FM station and one full-bandwidth HD station in the same band allocation

midnight adder
#

we mostly have dab at 32 kbps mono or 64 kbps stereo for music stations, not good enough for my ears

bitter pawn
#

le sigh

#

a customer at work has a video surveillance server that keeps dropping off the network.

subtle pasture
#

@midnight adder Fair point. it also has no analog fallback

#

So if there aren't enough bits coming through, it just drops out completely...

bitter pawn
#

the customer has legit tried to reason anything and everything else is wrong with the server other than the network that they maintain

subtle pasture
#

HD Radio falls back to analog FM

midnight adder
#

i listened to some siriusXM and hd radio last time i was in the states

#

could be both, no @bitter pawn ?

scenic radish
#

I've been pretty impressed with HD radio

#

The transition from analog to digital or vice versa is seamless

midnight adder
#

yeah, no interruption at all?
