@clear ferry that bathroom reminded me of the modifed GT40 that Jeremy Clarkson got to drive, that had a bulge in the door.

Also, can't you just sit down?

Hello all.. Just played around with Hass.io controlling a few lights and man what a great platform and looks like a great community too!

Hass.io was the old name for the appliance like install option, that uses Docker. It is now simply called Home Assistant OS (see #330990055533576204).

@deft pewter it's a huge case, and complicated case in legal world, like 15 people involved. some fled to Syria. I believe they waited some guy to be expelled from Djibouti etc. It was not just one guy going for it, when there are many conspirators the cases are always complicated and long.

hushed basalt

What's the security risk with face unlock?

brisk glen

hushed basalt

It's probably easier to fake a fingerprint than a face

patent bloom
#

Considering how many times they've allowed a picture to unlock the phone, I won't use it. Also, from a legal standpoint, it can be an issue if you find yourself in police custody...

brisk glen
#

its a lot easer with apple tech

#

well pictures don't work with apple face unlocking

and If I do anythign shady.. I can lock the phone beforehand

hushed basalt

I'm pretty sure modern smartphones use face mapping

brisk glen

most do not still

hushed basalt

My samsung s8's faceunlock is the crap version

patent bloom
#

Unfortunately, even Apple's face unlock can be defeated with a good enough picture. That said, the police can hold your phone in front of you. At least here, they can't force you to put your finger on the sensor.

hushed basalt
#

Fingerprint readers put you in trouble with police custody too

brisk glen
#

@patent bloom no it cant

hushed basalt

They can force your fingerprint, yes

brisk glen

brisk glen

hushed basalt

patent bloom

I'm not going to argue the point, but if I find the article from a few months ago, I'll post it. Either way, you can keep it.

hushed basalt
#

If police is a concern you should just be using password authentication

brisk glen
#

I take extreme prejustice to these articles as the testing is extreamly amaturish

#

they fail to consider the constant learning part of face unlocking

#

so it fails the first few times then starts to unlock

patent bloom
#

If I think I may be forced to hand over my phone, I'll turn it off on advance. It requires a pin/password on boot.

#

When security experts are the ones testing, I take a bit more notice. They didn't say it was easy, just possible.

brisk glen
#

when forced.. hold power and volume up as you hand it over or pre disable it

#

well yah.. anything is possible when you have the time and equipment

#

making an accurate mold of some ones face off of a 3d scan would work

#

but in reality... are they doing to do that in a day? and spend the money to do it?

patent bloom
#

They didn't go into great detail of what they did for obvious reasons, but I doubt they made a 3D mold when they clearly stated that they used photos of the phones owner.

hushed basalt
#

Do they use infrared sensitive ink?

brisk glen
#

considering it was iphone... they had to due to the way it maps unless it was some ink black magic

#

face mapping is beatable... just more secure than fingerprint

a lot more

hushed basalt

subtle pasture

@brisk glen I've seen facial recognition defeated by a photo... and the ones that include depth-mapping defeated by a photo on a mannequin head.

the grade 3 is a literal joke

it was a kwikset when they broke in lol, I bought a Schlage grade 2 and 1

put the grade 1 on the exterior and grade 2 on the interior that seperate the two halfs of my barn

#

believe what you want, buy what you want.. what the hell do i care lol

green inlet

Ok, you win....I will stay with my kwiksets and .40 automatic and home automations

I couldnโ€™t even find the grade of my kwiksets, and you are still grumpy

Ha ha ha

ANSI/BHMA grade 2 certified plus the bump lock technology.

forest edge

if you can't find the grade then it's worse than a 3 lol

green inlet

But again, this all started with zha vs zwave

forest edge
#

I was pretty pissed at just how easily the deadbolt snapped when they broke in. the lack of damage to such a cheap door said it all. so I dove down the rabbit hole of finding out the differences in locks and they haven't changed how they are made and the class system at all so what was junk then, is junk now etc

#

Not sure if that is a good thing or not :P

#

Hoping for lots of freebies because I don't make axis camera money ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Apparently got 46 cameras going up at a school, that should be fun

forest edge
#

my back door camera is placed above the dryer vent that is in the basement and it's freaky looking when the dryer is on and it's cold enough for heat to be seen outside

#

it's like ghosts passing by the camera

last cedar
#

Plot twist: it is actually ghosts passing by the camera

#

Maybe ghosts are water vapor

#

Maybe water is liquid form ghosts

forest edge
#

i'm just glad it dosen't trip the motion lol

last cedar
#

Did you not check the "paranormal movement detector"?

#

It was on the latest BI beta

forest edge
#

it required the sacrifice of a dozen racoons to enable. I mean I could enable it..

#

๐Ÿ˜ซ

#

I missed that

#

Thank you

#

Looking out for me

#

My friend got some nice video of wild boar digging up his garden last week at least

#

Those Starlight Dahua cameras do a good job

#

Almost as good as wild boar are at digging up gardens

So, I know this isn't one of the installation method channels, but I don't know which one to use. Last time I installed I used hass.io on a raspberry pi and it was a long time ago. Now I have a brand spanking shiny new PoE PI 4 (8gig) for use in our new house. Is it best to do a hass.io install again? or drop docker on a raspbian image and run it via containers (portainer) or something else?

#

one of the things I'd like to do outside of the hass ecosystem is run my intel neural compute stick off it too (it has a http bridge to take images from my blue iris install for the purposes of figuring out if I need a notification)

clear ferry
#

@steel tartan basically, do you know Linux, do venv, do you know docker, do containers, are you not interested in learning anything, do os, are you insane, do supervised

steel tartan
#

yeh I'm familiar with linux, and docker (patches for kernel and docker in days gone by lol)

#

thanks for the feedback

wet pilot
#

yeah, in that case its a "what do you want?" question. If you want an appliance, OS is your choice. If you want some control, just pick your masochism level. Docker: mild, venv: medium, supervised: <redacted>

steel tartan
#

hehe well I have been enjoying the os, the fact that it's a supervised (not to be confused with supervised) dockererised platform has been nice (except where I had to manually unbork the container by deleting it all and letting it figure itself out) and dropping things (nodered) in has been really easy.
As for my level of masochism... I run and maintain a 16 year old (still reasonably up to date) gentoo installation on my main server ๐Ÿ˜„

wet pilot
#

oooo boy

#

you're one of those XD

clear ferry
#

Don't kink shame

wet pilot
#

should be totally fine with venv if you so choose. Just standard python dependency hell and updating python versions once a year.

steel tartan
#

nah, I'm self aware and growing tired of it, I'm planning on migrating off it and rebuilding as soon as I can get my hands on enough hardware to temporarily migrate things to (there's a nice dual spf+ 16 sata port motherboard I have my eyes on, but we're building a house so it's a little out of budget)

wet pilot
#

a reformed grey beard then ๐Ÿ˜›

steel tartan
#

no, just every time I have to update something I have a "I'm too old for this" moment ๐Ÿ˜„

wet pilot
#

haha

#

maybe the appliance model would be nice then

clear ferry
#

Giving up control ๐Ÿคข

steel tartan
#

as long as I can boot an image up in the appliance model that gives me access to the USB ports so I can run the neural compute stick driver..

wet pilot
#

ehhh might be pushing it unless you make your own addon container to handle that stuff

steel tartan
#

@clear ferry I love my control, but I don't enjoy spending a week untangling why x blocks y and z won't install because of it despite x and z not being remotely related

#

well, I have dynalite to manage most of the automation initially (until I integrate it with hass) so I guess I have time to experiment to find a combination I like ๐Ÿ™‚

clear ferry
#

@steel tartan gotta fill the minutes somehow ๐Ÿคฃ

steel tartan
#

current state: portage won't update.... yeh ok that's future me's problem

wet pilot
#

Later: "Damn you past me!!!!"

clear ferry
#

emerge world

#

๐Ÿ‘€

steel tartan
#

yeh current me is already damning past me and making it future me's problem

wet pilot
#

hahaha and the cycle continues

#

like when you go back to touch code you wrote 6 months ago. "Man, whomever wrote this was an idiot...Oh."

steel tartan
#

hehe I've got perl code from 10 years ago and I'm like "this should be go code by now"

clear ferry
#

@steel tartan fret not, I still encounter and have to troubleshoot and manage nt3.5, hpux 10.20, tru64 and more, you'll survive

steel tartan
#

my method of managing windows installs means no-one invites me to do it.
store anything important on a linux share
format windows every 6 months

#

oh well, lets go see what smoke this lets out (haven't tried booting it yet)

steel tartan
#

https://community.home-assistant.io/t/neural-network-human-presence-detection/106117/150 oh looks like someone's doing something similar to what I want to do (except I want to upload jpegs from motion detection on 8 different cameras :D)

#

so yeh maybe I can use portainer.io to launch this on an appliance install

Why would it have an antenna inbuilt as well as a PAL passthrough

We would go apeshit if they tried that

#

Probably more so the AM network

#

Is multicasting on 4G a thing

#

Like couldn't they just multicast over 4G and everyone can just listen to that

clear ferry

With 99% coverage of mobile networks, and 90% coverage of DAB it wasn't very hard

Only AM we get here the last 20+ years is flight control

hushed basalt

We don't have anything close to full mobile coverage here

It's better than it used to be, but once you're out in the sticks, large gaps in cover are normal

We don't need landlines

I only had landlines for ADSL

@grim wasp Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.
