@clever mortar "why would anyone wanna use l0 if he wants to use the service from outside of the "localhost"

#

im realy curious about your expertise

clever mortar
#

Once more, you're confusing how things connect with how things listen

#

May I introduce you to the netstat command?

midnight adder
#

no

#

i prefer ss

clever mortar
#

It'll show you what interfaces (and other details) a service listens on

midnight adder
#

netstat is deprecated

clever mortar
#

You'll discovery that magically services can listen on multiple interfaces

midnight adder
#

lol

clever mortar
#

You can connect via any of those interfaces

#

One of which may possibly be loopback

midnight adder
#

any would ne "usually" 0.0.0.0

#

so?

#

again

#

why loopback?

#

no bullshit bingo

clever mortar
#

Because it's local...

midnight adder
#

tell me

deft pewter

I smell a troll.

midnight adder
#

yeah lol... "LOCAL"

clever mortar
#

I'm not sure it's moved up to troll

midnight adder
#

not rachable from the outside. but that would be the goal... supprisingly

deft pewter

I was trying to be polite. I don't say what I'm thinking about people like this, for fear of getting banned myself 😄

☝️ have a read

maybe you do your homework kid... and use netstat on recent systems... or install deprecated software 🙂

@dusky plank it does, the error sat in front of the screen

dull chasm
#

put the beer down ....you need to rethink your current situation

#

@tidal bronze maybe i move there ..nevermind i would go to jail ... i dont think me and the avg cali person could get along

#

plus there is a good chance of burning

tidal bronze
#

@dull chasm you would fit just fine. Take my word on that. 😆

#

Anyway stay safe.

dull chasm
#

LOL i think i am way to right wing for cali 🤣

#

i will thanks ...just means i gotta work more hours .....80+ weeks are getting old

tidal bronze

Bring any wing you got, you will fit in just fine.

Man... doing A/V stuff has me regretting my decision

These setups are funky

dull chasm

This 8 TV setup acting as 1 is really funky

#

Well yes.. its fun

#

8 edge to edge tvs are fun

#

But its still funky

dull chasm
#

oh ...i really dont give two many shits about the video side ....more of the audio

brisk glen
#

😦 I deal with more of the video side

#

Audio would be more fun

Less very odd and strange ways of doing audio vs all of the funky things that go on with video

I have quite a TODO list:

- Mount contact/acceleration sensor in mailbox
- Use Sonoff 5V relay Wifi board to "push" a button in my kid's toy
- Ditch Hue hub and migrate to Z2M
- Ditch Samsung ST hub and migration to Z2M
- Install IOT for Windows so I can properly control power state
- Convert dumb IKEA cordless blinds to stepping motor for raise/lower cover, WIFI controller
- Get AppDaemon working with a custom dashboard
- Fix the completely broken Hyperion lights and my hyperion server Pi3
- Make my own lovelace dashboard that isn't showing every damn device in the house
- Migrate my Hue Labs dimmer/motion routines to HA (circadian rhythm)
- POE all my critical networking devices
- The list goes on...

@forest edge , fake news. Sure, there are problems in specific areas. My aunt lives in a hot zone. But typical news drama, the worlds associates one area for an entire region.

I’m crossing my fingers that the rm4 Gemini gets fixed.

clever mortar

If it's not fixed in #beta it won't be fixed in the release 😉

clear ferry

I try not to use beta since I only have one instance of HA running

Doesn't stop you following along 😉

clear ferry

Doesn't stop you from reading the release notes atleast

shrewd oasis

I did but o my see reference to rm4c mini. The rm4 mini is a previous version though. The integration doesn’t want to accept it. Saw one issue that mentioned the rm4 mini but half way down it turned into an rm4c mini talk....

#

I ordered 4 shellys almost 2 years ago, I should install them soon

forest edge
#

almost bought one of those. I have a double switch single gang controlling my outside lights and outside outlet. was gonna use one of those to make the switch smart so I could control my outside lights by the door

#

but at 30 bucks.. was like meh.. two 1pm's are cheaper than that lol

forest edge
#

i really hope they get dafang to work on the new wyze v3

clear ferry
#

I should buy a coral at some point to use with doods

cedar glacier
#

@clear ferry so the hospital i support refuses to upgrade their machine for their internal systems

#

it's an 8 core machine

#

and the thing has 1600 logged in users

#

it's driving me mental

clear ferry
#

sounds like the normal hospital stuff then 😉

#

I still see PA-RISC servers running in production in hospitals

cedar glacier
#

apparently oracle licenses per CPU CORE?! (i am incident manager, i dont actually get involved with the systems, dont think im the only person running this haha)

clear ferry
#

Yes, they do that

#

Oracle is one of the few reasons why Intel still sold 2 and 4 core CPUs just a few years ago for servers

#

Most customers these days find ways to migrate away from Oracle, but some ISV stuff requires ORACLE because 💸

#

But I have a customer who will pay roughly $40k per extra core he adds to his RAC these days

#

just in core fees

cedar glacier
#

god fucking damn

clear ferry
#

Oracle even wants you to license any core that the DB MIGHT run on

#

so if you run a linked vcenter you have to pay for ANY core across all clusters and vcenters

cedar glacier
#

i was in a call and they said '8 core' and i was like SLAP A 32 CORE IN THERE CALL IT A DAy but then the oracle money hound

clear ferry
#

Worst case scenario, you pay for say... 2048 cores

cedar glacier
#

god fucking damn

clear ferry
#

Would be interesting to see the license costs of running on the LUMI HPC system now, with 200k cores 🤔

#

Yeah, if the applications you are running supports anything else than oracle

#

move away

dusky plank
#

guess tiktok gets oracle licencses on a good deal

clear ferry
#

many of my smaller customers have moved to mongodb I think

forest edge

that shit just gets pushed to the consumer so what do they care lol

clear ferry

Oracle, consumer

#

🤔

forest edge

where do you think money comes from? trees?

clear ferry

Oracle, consumers

#

🤔

bitter zinc

Wait Tic Tok got given to oracle?

#

I thought that was pushed back like 10 times

forest edge
#

don't think anything is finalized yet

Yeah I thought it kept getting pushed back lol

#

Yeah I realize it's a totally loaded question because I haven't expanded on what I need.

But the tl;dr is I have big dreams of tinkering with anything and everything but rarely have time to actually do the things I have on my tinker list. Feels like Unifi would be a good intermediary

clear ferry

Long live *sense

dull chasm
#

i got a complete unifi system and it works great never need to reboot or have problems with connections and speed/signal

wanton bobcat

Question - do I have to buy an additional switch or will the UDM + access points work?

At least until I can muster up some change for a switch.

forest edge
#

expensive networking 🤢

dusky plank
#

no homepods in my country 😓

wanton bobcat

I just bought a house, and it seems everything is at least $1000.

#

Yardwork? $1000.

#

Furniture? $1000

#

Networking equipment? $1000

dusky plank
#

no need for unify though

wanton bobcat
#

What would you recommend @dusky plank ?

#

I thought about an edge router x or something as an alternative. and some wired APs

dusky plank
#

or do you have 300 guests or students in your yard?

wanton bobcat
#

Nope, probably 100 devices at some point but mostly IoT

#

only a couple heavy-use devices

#

Also every room is wired with cat6

clever mortar
#

pfSense/opnSense for the router. Any decent enough AC/AX AP (or two), and any decent managed switch - Mikrotik if you want good and low cost

dusky plank
#

I think we had this discussion 2 days ago

clever mortar
#

And probably two days before that

dusky plank
#

yep

clever mortar
#

Thankfully there's a few homelab Discords too, for when people want to really go down the rabbit hole

wanton bobcat
#

Yeah I think I've asked this at least twice on Discord to various groups.

#

I'll check out Mikrotik. I've got a couple APs. ugly as all hell. but they work

dusky plank
#

if you have cat6 anywhere, aruba is nice too and I think a good middle

clear ferry
#

🧛‍♂️

wanton bobcat
#

Checking out Aruba now. HP company eh

clear ferry
#

Don't mix hp and hpe

wanton bobcat
#

Any of these APs work to help with room-level presence detection in home assistant by chance?

clear ferry
#

Also, Aruba is its own entity

wanton bobcat
#

I just saw aruba's proximity thing.

hollow glacier
#

Thankfully there's a few homelab Discords too, for when people want to really go down the rabbit hole
@clever mortar i run one of those :x

clear ferry
#

Room level detection is better done with behaviour than devices

hollow glacier
#

?

#

ble beacons are devices

wanton bobcat
#

I've got RPI zeros everywhere using bluetooth classic, but ain't cuttin it

#

probably need BLE

clear ferry
#

Ble is poor detection tbh

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but unless you embed them in people, it doesn't help for presence detection @hollow glacier 😉

#

Presence != devices

hollow glacier
#

"you guys dont have phones"

#

in this case, smart watches?

#

😛

wanton bobcat
#

@hollow glacier is there a newb "tell me what to buy" section there?

hollow glacier
wanton bobcat
#

^^^^^ exactly what i'm using

#

need to figure out proper rssi thresholds

hollow glacier
#

get to playing yo

wanton bobcat
#

right now i get lots of inter-room jumping

hollow glacier
#

i thought about putting a pi above each ceiling fan

#

(at least for bedrooms)

#

or w/e kind of beacon

clear ferry
#

Because that is poor room presence detection @wanton bobcat

#

See what people are doing, and when

#

And base it on multiple values

hollow glacier
#

@hollow glacier is there a newb "tell me what to buy" section there?
@wanton bobcat regarding?

wanton bobcat
#

Ultimately I'd like to setup cameras in each room and use some pre-trained ML-based CV models

#

@wanton bobcat regarding?
@hollow glacier Home networking

hollow glacier
#

ah

clear ferry
#

Indoor cameras 🤢

hollow glacier
#

i wrote a guide

#

yeah i dont want cameras in the house

#

f that

wanton bobcat
#

@clear ferry not a fan?? even if they're just local?

clear ferry
#

Never

wanton bobcat
#

Fair enough

hollow glacier

yea not cool

gotta learn some norwegian I see

hollow glacier
#

ah nice

#

i was giving you shit, i have no standards

dull chasm
#

thats for a remote camera 150 meters away

hollow glacier

i think in wall units per room and disc APs for big areas are the way to go

dull chasm
#

my layout doesnt fit that but i do agree with that in theroy

hollow glacier
#

yeah

dull chasm
#

those nanostations will go 3k to 5k meters btw

hollow glacier
#

obv depends on floorplan and other things, but in general i think that is the way

#

yeah

#

i saw their newer BBB devices

#

those things look sweet

#

oh they renamed them to UBB

dull chasm
#

the damn things are about the size of a pack of smokes and have worked flawless

hollow glacier
#

better to use those for apartments i'd guess

#

i used to work at a company that deployed/managed/watched security cams remote

#

we used tons of rockets and lightbeams

#

some nanos

dull chasm
#

might even reach @forest edge in his barn 🤣

#

thats above my budjet and needs thou

#

i just wished the nano's showed up in the ui as a device on the unifi dashboard

forest edge
#

this is 2020 my barn has dialup

dull chasm
#

by chicken pecks

forest edge
#

I don't have a petting zoo

dull chasm
#

well if you start maybe the other barn animals will start to accept ya

forest edge
#

no matter how much you want to find someone north that can exchange with you a foreign exchange student type deal for swapping around your petting zoo animals it won't be me lol

dull chasm
#

ok i will tell the sow and hefer that has been bitching to kick and/or bite ya 🤣

forest edge
#

lol hefer.. spoken like a true cowboy

dull chasm
#

cowboy up ......city slicker

#

you sure you not over there with @tidal bronze

forest edge
#

they are not called cowboys in california, they are known as organic warriors

dull chasm
#

poor rabbits are starving btw

tidal bronze
#

@dull chasm when you say "there" you must be specific sir. There, can be a lot of places to me.

#

But yep super fantastic in Vegas.

#

@forest edge I know you are dreaming to go non GMO organic one of these days. Cowboy or not.

dull chasm
#

there i am not sure but i think @forest edge is a closet cali

tidal bronze
#

Yes he is. Waiting for him to realize that. 🤣

dull chasm
#

i know right .....while the keto is hanging from bottom lip

forest edge
#

I eat chicken, does that make me organic enough?

dull chasm
#

he is trying to chew

forest edge
#

chew tobacco.. gross lmao

dull chasm
#

no the rabbit food ....fiber is tough

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge @dull chasm so when are you guys going to come down. Enough salivating

dull chasm
#

us three same room .....would be interesting

tidal bronze
#

Let's try this outdoors first. Room to boot would be a non starter

#

@dull chasm I know you got that XXL Sombrero would be in our faces.

dull chasm
#

@tidal bronze nope a stetson

forest edge
#

come down? to vegas? cause where you live is not down, up for vas and left for me lol

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge cali.

forest edge
#

you got alot going on in your state, I wouldn't feel safe lol

tidal bronze
#

I got a safe place not to worry.

dull chasm

cry me a river ....... city slicker

forest edge
#

not wanting to be shoved into your ceder pedo chest either lol

tidal bronze
dull chasm
#

i am good in about a year .... @tidal bronze you got to get a good contact with John Deere so tractor will cost alot less

forest edge
#

he would have better luck getting in good with Ventrac

tidal bronze
#

@dull chasm with all of us going green have you looked into plow attachment for a Tesla S?

dull chasm
#

f no

forest edge
#

you don't need a plow when doing rice patties in the swamp

dull chasm
forest edge
#

would picture alligator skinned honestly lol

dull chasm
#

nah thats the boots duh

tidal bronze
#

Boots ?

dull chasm
#

yep

tidal bronze
#

Oiled leather cork soft footbed.

forest edge
#

the hat make you look too australian or something?

dull chasm
#

yes

dusky plank
#

enough discord for today

tidal bronze
#

You gotta be gentle on your feet @dull chasm why suffocate with boots.

dull chasm
#

what i have always wore .....

forest edge
#

most cowboy boots are water proof and you need that when trekking through the mud lol

tidal bronze
dull chasm
#

nah .....mink oil can help but socks will get wet with prolonged water ..... i wear boots 24/7 .... a baseball cap when working but a stetson otherwise

tidal bronze
#

So after a pedicure you wear boots all day ?

forest edge
#

mine were always waterproof when i wore them eons ago when i was young

#

course once you get holes they don't stay that way lol

dull chasm
#

well they where not leather as most boots are .

tidal bronze
#

Boots, waterproof WTH

forest edge
#

they have to be treated

dull chasm
#

i have military jungle boots that are .....but total diff animal

tidal bronze

Must be unforgiving terrain

forest edge

but i don't live in the swamp so maybe I never submerged them enough lol

tidal bronze

See nothing to worry about with lovely sand.

forest edge

except heat

tidal bronze

Yep a cork for that.

forest edge

sand actually sucks lol

you take one step onto the beach and you spend the remaining 8+ hours of the day wondering how the hell it got into your ass crack

They launched today with very little fanfare.

... except they apparently just ran google translate on the entire product name database and called it a day.

With interesting results for thing like "rape seed flower patterns" or cocks and hens...

Also, in some cases they - as it seems - took the price from amazon.de, removed the € symbol and replaced it with the Swedish kr ... which made things about ten times cheaper...

@lapis ember Because you recommended static IP, I am curious how you would address the situation I previously mentioned in #330990055533576204. I may have gone about it the wrong way, which is why I am asking.

hushed basalt
#

Static IP, hissssss

peak cloud
#

@hushed basalt What's so bad about static IPs? 😉 Please, enlighten me! 😂

#

(I probably share the same opinion/experiences.)

subtle pasture
#

My preference is to assign static DHCP leases, rather than configuring each individual endpoint with a static IP

hushed basalt
#

I try to use FQDNs wherever possible

subtle pasture
#

This allows for centralized management of IP addresses and other DHCP options (DNS server, gateway IP, boot server, etc).

hushed basalt
#

Only use static IPs where I can't use FQDN

#

Static IPs are inherently coupled to their network,

subtle pasture
#

I mean, using DHCP + static leases solves that

lapis ember
#

@peak cloud can you elaborate? Tell us your scenario again 🙂

#

and the reason why I would go static is if you want to use your same pi/instance as a DNS server (the AdGuard addon requests a static IP as mandatory, but doesn't check this)

wet pilot
#

lol having a pi do multiple things sounds like a terrible idea

subtle pasture
#

I mean, people often run a number of docker containers on them (HassOS, for instance). They're not terrible at multitasking

peak cloud
#

My scenario was that last month I lived in a house where I controlled the network from the WAN port back. I had my network setup on 172.16.0.0/20, with quite a few devices setup with static IPs on different octets for organization. This month I am now living in a house where the network is already established on 192.168.1.0/24. Trying to migrate the devices to the new network has been a complete nightmare, even while attempting to assign a static IP to my own machine that falls on the same subnet as the devices.

subtle pasture
#

For core network services, like DNS, though... run two for redundancy

wet pilot
#

i switched off hassos on a pi precisely for the poor performance

#

but that was on a 3b+ maybe the 4 is better

hollow glacier
#

Pi4 ssd boot is the only pi I’ll touch now

subtle pasture
#

heh, it actually runs great now. Used to be dog slow a few versions back, but 0.114 or 0.115 onwards are great

#

I'm booting HassOS from a SATA SSD on a Pi 3B

wet pilot
#

GA would time out trying to reach out during commands because the things was too much of a pig

lapis ember
#

If you only need to access one or two devices externally, I'd maybe suggest bringing your router from the old house to the new house, and sitting that on as your primary router, and going out to internet via their existing router at the home - then you wouldn't need to change much

wet pilot
#

beware the double nat

peak cloud
#

@lapis ember I only needed to access one device externally, the main server running NGINX. But that in and of itself proposed another issue: external port 443 is not able to be forwarded to the internal network on an AT&T-issued modem/router. However, that probably would have made it much easier to reconfigure the devices for the new network. 🤦‍♂️

#

And that is precisely why I said: "I may have gone about it the wrong way, which is why I am asking." So, thank you, now I know a better way to address it in the future!

wet pilot
#

ATT router supports a passthrough/dmz feature that will take all received traffic and dump it to a target device

peak cloud
#

Correct, but apparently it won't pass through 443 exclusively even with DMZ.

wet pilot
#

oh gross

#

i'm not having that problem right now though

#

i'm behind said att router and i can go to 443 just fine

peak cloud
#

With DMZ enabled??

wet pilot
#

passthrough at least

#

i don't remember my creds to that box so i can't check atm

peak cloud
#

Let me check the settings, 1 sec. Everything I read said that in order to gain access to 443 remotely you have to obtain a static IP through them.

#

Okay, so passthrough is what I would normally use if I was replacing the default/internal router with my own. Being that it's an established network, that is not something I am able to do without fuss.

wet pilot
#

ahh ok

#

i don't trust the vendor provided crap for as far as i can throw them so i went with passthrough to bypass it as much as i could

peak cloud
#

The other option is "default server" -- which most likely will not work based on what I read, but I haven't actually tried it yet.

#

Oh trust me, if it was my own network I would setup my own router in a heartbeat.

#

Just confirmed -- "Default Server" option does not pass through port 443, but will pass through other ports (8443, 9443, 4277, 3306, 1883).

Hey guys, bit of a strange networking issue here. Setup is:

  • HA core docker (host networking mode)
  • Nginx proxy passthrough to local network

It's worked fine since ~0.3x. but suddenly today after upgrading to 0.117, it's stopped responding.

  1. Nginx reports a an issue with the upstream server (HA core)
  2. Host machine curl -vvv http://127.1:8123/ times out
  3. From inside the docker container curl -vvv http://127.1:8123/ also times out

Anyone seeing issues like this?

#

Also duplicated the docker container to another machine on the local network and same issues (one Ubuntu 16.04 and the other Debian 10)

peak cloud
#
  1. You might have better luck asking your same question in #449717345808547842.
  2. I didn't realize that Home Assistant has been available on Docker since 0.3x. I was scared of Docker for the longest time, but finally got around to liking it in the 0.7x era.

Oh and nothing in logs 😦

Yup, every single day. I work at an MSP, so I get to see stupidity across all 90 of our clients

Most recently, we had a client leave us for another MSP. Almost 3 months after leaving us, their new MSP calls us up and demands the password for the archive we sent to them with all of the clients' documentation and passwords

They'd let the original password expire, and being that 90 days had passed, we'd already purged a lot of data for liability reasons

i swear when everything changes to electric jeep will probably be the only one that remains looking the same lol

peak cloud
#

Yup! Jeep is set in their ways.

#

Just ignore the grill...it’s ugly. 🤦🏻‍♂️

#

And ignore the bumpers, too. I desperately need to replace both bumpers and the grill.

last dirge
#

the whole thing's ugly 🙂

clever mortar
#

You need to fit a roof-rack to it

#

Then you can jack up the rack and drive a car underneath it 😉

@last dirge look at your phone screen and stop looking at the mirror.

It’s “extra” something alright.

they want to be a HMMV when they grow up

forest edge

your missing the snorkle intake that way you can drive it underwater and wash it and yourself at the same time

peak cloud

You misspelled HMMWV.

#

Mine needs to be washed bad. It still has mud inside of it from mudding naked.

forest edge
#

yea that looks normal

peak cloud

You guys are just as bad mean as some of my friends. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m gonna go run and cry in the corner now.

I think that's from the Adams Family film...

Let me guess, you guys are Hummer EV fanbois?

clever mortar
#

Pfft, Land Rover or bust

#

It may not be pretty, it may not be modern, but you can tear it down and rebuild it with a handful of tools

peak cloud
#

The new Hummer EV has three huge issues from the get-go:

  1. It’s fugly.
  2. Where are you going to find an electrical outlet while off-roading?
  3. It’s a Hummer.
forest edge
#

the only good hummer was the first military one lol

peak cloud
#

Exactly my thought!

#

The HMMWV.

#

It may not be pretty, it may not be modern, but you can tear it down and rebuild it with a handful of tools
@clever mortar If I didn’t know better I would think you’re talking about a Jeep...

clever mortar
#

It's what the Jeep wanted to be when it grew up 😛

peak cloud

I can do majority of what needs to be done with the few small tools I have in the back.

forest edge

UK fuse boxes are weird

clever mortar
#

UK mains wiring is ... strange

#

It has advantages, but all because of a copper shortage after WWII

forest edge
#

is the fuse box location under stairs normal?

clear ferry
#

Normal in most EU countries I've been in

#

Or in the outer hallway

#

Either one of those

forest edge
#

it seems strange considering there is a basment as well

clever mortar
#

Ours is in the garage, but we have an attached garage

ripe zinc
#

anyone have a favorite device for smoke/CO2 detectors?

clever mortar
#

Under the stairs is normal for older construction, and not uncommon for newer

clear ferry
#

Mine are under the stairs in the basement

#

My father's are in the entry hallway

forest edge
#

just watched a ideo where a dude was swapping out the fuse box "retrofit" and he was talking about the location of the fuse box and gas being under the stairs and the fire hazards etc

ripe zinc
#

a customer is wanting to get some Carbon Monoxide detectors for their business, but it looks like
A- there might be a limit of 10 per Google Account
B- I don't really want to rely on one of Google's services/devices for Business proceses - they just get cancelled too often

velvet horizonBOT
#

Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:

  • Which country you're in
  • What your budget is
  • What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
  • Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
clear ferry
#

@forest edge yeah, gas is.. not normal, I know the UK and Germany has it, haven't seen it in any other countries I've stayed in

clever mortar
#

Retrofit gas shutoff being under the stairs is pretty normal. These days it's outside

forest edge
#

this video had the meter for the gas inside

#

it had to be like 300cm's from the fuse box or some crap for code

ripe zinc
#

so ideally I'm looking for something I could control multiple with, in a single pane
throw alerts to email, maybe phone/text or something too if available
and preferably, something that can work as it's own service, so that I don't have to setup a HomeAssistant server for the company

clever mortar
#

Have a look at FireAngel Pro Connected then

ripe zinc
#

but the capabilities of integrating with HomeAssistant for example could be an indicator toward me being able to talk to it over APIs etc later on if needed

clever mortar
#

There's not really any good HA integrated options out there

#

However... the wired interlink on these things is normally about 9V, so a DIY tap will work

ripe zinc
#

hmm looks pretty nice

slate marsh
#

I've never actually had any evidence of the CO sensors working on nest. I guess that's a good thing but maybe I should try

ripe zinc
#

oh - looks like those Fireangel may only be available in UK?

#

sorry I am in US forgot to mention that one

forest edge
#

🦥

ripe zinc
#

searching for "Carbon Monoxide" with Wifi on Amazon yields a slightly disturbing number of hidden cameras and spy cams

ripe zinc
#

I think we're probably just going to boot this from our IT team and tell them to maybe try a security company

#

cause it seems like a lot of the security companies already support CO and Smoke alarms just like any fire alarm
and we really don't want to get ourselves in the middle of the line-of-support for an alarm going bad or acting up

we'll stick to our computers, thanks 😄

#

thanks though Tinker!

peak cloud
#

anyone have a favorite device for smoke/CO2 detectors?
@ripe zinc I generally try not to rely on combo devices for CO CO² detection. I've heard that CO CO² is heavier than air which causes it to fall and stay low to the ground.

ripe zinc
#

yes I think I typo'd that originally

#

Carbon Dioxide - CO2 is heavier than air

#

whereas Carbom MONOxide is lighter than air

peak cloud
#

Hah, brainfart on my end. CO detection, I'm a derp.

ripe zinc
#

so if you wanted a Carbon Dioxide sensor, I think it would be better placed low in the room

peak cloud
#

I've had too many sodas lately.

ripe zinc
#

whereas smoke rises, like CO also does, so they would both be good sensors to have higher up

peak cloud
#

Good to know. I haven't done my own research on the topic, although I should, so what I know of the topic is completely here-say.

ripe zinc
#

fair

#

yeah the customer asked about Nest Protect's specifically, and I wanted to write back discounting Google/Nest as I'm not confident they won't just cancel the service with like a year or whatever notice

#

was hoping to have a replacement suggestion to write back with, but I think I'm just gonna recommend to ask a Home/business security person cause it seems like those industries/verticals already do a lot of that

peak cloud
#

Now I'm going to go look to see if there are any Zigbee smoke/CO detectors on the market!

clever mortar
#

There are

orchid rose
#

Xiaomi has one for smoke. Is there any good reason I can't think of to make CO detection smart?

#

Smoke alarms make sense as you might not be home, but with CO, is there some scenarios where it would be useful?

peak cloud
#

For data hoarders whores? 🤷

ripe zinc
#

pets could get sick or die from CO

#

small children when you're not home to notice something up

orchid rose
#

No pets in my case. And while I do like data, I like reliable cheap stuff even more

peak cloud
#

If getting paid for sex makes you a whore, does giving it away for free make you a non-profit whoreganization?

clever mortar
#

Great thing about carbon monoxide, it has no taste, no smell. It'll kill you quietly while you don't even notice...

#

You may notice a fire, if you're not asleep/away, you won't ever notice CO unless you're very lucky

ripe zinc
#

the effects also supposedly comes on very rapidly

#

0 to dizzy then loss of consciousness with little warning

peak cloud
#

Great thing about getting covid...I can go weeks without showering and I never stink!

ripe zinc
#

I barely even noticed when I got COVID

orchid rose
#

My dad talks about how he once got the CO poisoning. Took them a while to figure out what was going on and only after he went to get some oxygen he understood what's going on. It's really scary in a way it affects your cognitive capabilities as well

ripe zinc
#

yeah it's supposed to make you headache, nauseous, foggy, like you've been drinking, dizzy, and loss of conciousness

last plaza
#

A family stayed in VRBO vacation home in Florida found dead because the vacation home didn’t have functioning CO sensor. Kids died upstairs in the bedroom, parents in the living room couch dead watching tv.

clever mortar
#

One of the few signs is on your skin - when I was doing first aid it was one of the things we were taught to look out for

last plaza
#

Since I heard the news, I added CO sensor to my travel kit.

clever mortar
#

Not a bad plan

last plaza
#

There are some nice CO sensors portable ones in Amazon. I always keep a few handy.

orchid rose
#

Definitely seems like a good idea even if the risk is rather low

forest edge
#

why would you need a co2 detector

peak cloud
#

To detect if your soda is actually carbonated or not. Duh doy.

forest edge
#

I thought maybe cause jeep groupies gathered in bulk and you wanted a prewarning before you all killed yourselves exhaling

last dirge
#

that's just hot air

clear ferry
#

@last plaza but where did the co2 come from?

young sigil
#

I've been in a field hut playing cards having a few drinks, gas heater on. Bit of a headache, sleepy. Thought I was just dehydrated after a hard day. Someone went out to the toilet and the blast of fresh air made the whole room seem brighter. Had a look at the CO alarm - dead battery. Went outside for some fresh air for a while.

last plaza
#

@last plaza but where did the co2 come from?
@clear ferry not CO2. It was CO. Guess it came from gas leak or something in the house.

young sigil
#

Oh, yeah definitely CO.

forest edge
#

improper ventilation for a heater, water heater, dryer is always the cause

ripe zinc
#

anything burning can/will generate CO

clear ferry
#

Oh right, gas, we don't use that so not really an issue here 🤣

peak cloud
#

Burning an inefficient propane heater inside will do the trick too.

forest edge
#

yea you just die to methane

clear ferry
#

That is what my wife complains about @forest edge

#

@peak cloud but... Why would anyone 🦄

forest edge
#

I never had a co detector go off in any of the homes I ever owned or lived in

ripe zinc
#

yeah, after someone earlier mentioned that they'd never seen any alerts from theirs I was thinking ...... like how would you even test it's working correctly

forest edge
#

in the US basements is where the majority of gas appliances are and basements are the worst insulated parts of the house. a single shitty window would probably take care of any co buiold up on it's own lol

peak cloud
#

@clear ferry Not everyone knows about the dangers of burning propane in an enclosed area. And not everyone is smart enough to pay attention to warning labels.

orchid rose

don't norwegians do the cabin in the woods thing?

clear ferry

I have never heard of anyone using propane indoors

At all

orchid rose

wood tho

@orchid rose actually yes, but all cabins I've been in have been wood fired or electric
