The irony of me being the busiest worker with military and dark site customers, while at the same time doing AWS certification

#

๐Ÿคฃ

dusky plank
#

on the one hand I'm intrigued to know what you mean with "dark site customers", on the other I'm sure I will sleep better without

clear ferry
#

any site airgapped from the internet

#

with very few people knowing it's location

#

and very few people allowed to enter

dusky plank
#

ok "site" site... I thought of website

clear ferry
#

that would be a dark website ๐Ÿ˜‰

which is something completely different

forest edge
#

airgapped from the internet? is that a technical term? lol

clear ferry
#

yes

clever mortar
#

Very yes

clear ferry
#

An air gap, air wall, air gapping or disconnected network is a network security measure employed on one or more computers to ensure that a secure computer network is physically isolated from unsecured networks, such as the public Internet or an unsecured local area network. It...

forest edge
#

wtf what a dumb name

clear ferry
#

it makes total sense ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

not my fault you are not proficient in the English language

#

๐Ÿ‘‰

forest edge
#

"disconnected network" stick with that

clear ferry
#

that's not the same

forest edge
#

the airgap term was takin from plumbing according to that wiki lol

#

how is not the same?

clear ferry
#

in the field we would use that term for a computer not connected physically to any network

forest edge
#

a lan party with no connections to the internet is a disconnected network(airgapped)

clear ferry
#

if you say airgapped everyone knows what you are talking about

forest edge
#

oh so it's only in reference to one pc?

#

how can a single pc be networked?

clear ferry
#

there are a lot of "disconnected network" systems out there, that have not network link, but have a local monitor that you can interact with

#

like a diesel pump controller

#

while a airgapped system (one or more computers) are interconnected to each other, and maybe even to a second site via a private link

dusky plank
#

is it comparable to a terminal server?

clear ferry
#

although not connected to any other networks or ther internet

#

that is something completely different @dusky plank

forest edge
#

it's a dumb name

clear ferry
#

AWS Data lakes and analytics ๐Ÿ˜ด

forest edge
#

lets see, what is the origin of that terminolgy and when did it come about

#

if it was after 2000, your a turd lol

clear ferry
#

I am a turd

#

๐Ÿ’ฉ

#

but no, airgapped networks have been around for 40+ years

clever mortar
#

Well, technically they pre-date the Internet ๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

talking about the name

#

the reference

#

not once ever heard of that term, unless that is just an EU thing

clear ferry
#

But have you ever been within 20km of a enterprise datacenter ?

#

๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

I predate datacenters

clear ferry
#

that is right, you are born in the 30s

dusky plank
#

usually when I look into this channel at that time there's some kind of beverage to see and mentions of pdobrien,
it was more fun that way

forest edge
#

I can't find a solid date but everything on that wiki was like 2010+ lol

clever mortar
#

Pre-dates that by a long long long time

clear ferry
#

Tink knows, he's been working with this since the 50s

clever mortar

well again, maybe this is just a EU thang

strange vapor
#

@forest edge One of the most infamous airgapped computers in fiction is the one Tom Cruise hangs over in the original Mission Impossible. The term itself came from military/intelligence fields in the US ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

I'm aware of what it is, but the name.. yea no lol

clear ferry
#

get your bachelor's in english, it'll make sense

#

๐Ÿคฃ

forest edge
#

it's stupid

#

and on top of that it seems as time goes on the term gets more muddy in what's considered "air gapped" even in scenarios where it literally makes no sense at all lol

#

do future generations a favor, stop referring to them as that lol

strange vapor
#

Good luck trying to get a whole industry to change the term. The same industry that still has a floppy disk as the default save icon ๐Ÿ™‚

Was wondering what security systems everyone uses with HA? I currently am using ADT but am looking to switch off them as they keep increasing costs without notice or reason. I was looking at SimpliSafe but am not sure if the integration shows what I'm looking for. Kinda wondering if piecemeal would be the best option, just buying my own Z-Wave sensors and some kind of Klaxon alarm that I could set up with HA and nodered or something

tidal bronze
#

@timid loom if you are keeping the panel and sensors after discontinuing service, look into alarmdecoder etc and bring the sensors into HA

@night zodiac I see the point but I see vscode's success only in the browser either... so if you have a browser already... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
I read an article on how vscode takes over the ide world in storm and it's really great also without this feature

anyway, nobody likes clunky eclipse

I really enjoy vs code

night zodiac

and wsl 2, and windows terminal

#

I just used ms teams through the browser and hated it, lol. I guess I will try the app next time :/ It probably supports seeing everyone at once

dusky plank
#

I looked at wsl2 once and I'm still trying to figure out a real advantage to a vm - it's just hyperv you get the same with any vm and virtio

#

plus the users get confused with the internal networking, no real dedicated iface

night zodiac
#

I used VM before and it just isn't the same. I am still in dows and makes life easier for me

dusky plank
#

you get the same disk access with mount -t 9p on any virtio compatible hypervisor

night zodiac
#

oh no

#

why did it record three monitors

#

why would it?

dusky plank

because you have the source files there? ๐Ÿ˜„

night zodiac
#

you shouldn't do that

#

it'd be very slow

dusky plank
#

yep there's the problem

night zodiac
#

but why would you keep source files in dows if you're deving in unix? lol

dusky plank
#

because your ide is in win

night zodiac
#

well luckily my vs code works out of wsl2, lol

dusky plank
#

or rather - one wants it to be in win

#

i work on osx anyway, I just helped a lad out one day

night zodiac
#

what ide did he have to use?

#

I wonder if it has wsl2 support these days

#

eclipse did you say?

dusky plank
#

his problem wasn't really the ide but the performance in a symfony project running in docker with php-fpm

#

when he had the project src in win - php performance was slow
vice versa the file permissions were fucked

#

plus debugger and a lot of i/o - it's a nightmare

#

not to mention docker's FS translations

night zodiac
#

o.O

#

I have had great success with docker in wsl2

#

odd

hearty depot
#

ever tryed podman?
I got to like it very much on RH
I think it could work well on wsl

night zodiac
#

I haven't yet but I'll read about it. On my windows machine I am usually only running docker jazz through vs code. I have a couple of docker servers at home though.

#

The vs code docker just start when I am in vs code and end when I close.

#

I've been lazy recently but I know I am starting a new project soon so I will have all of this from the start

hearty depot
#

When you got a real server around you could also forward the docker socket to your machine and use the remote ones as local

dusky plank
#

I was on win 'til windows vista, I had 7 running in bootcamp and at that time a macbook was the best laptop also for windows... never switched back, I'm more and more transitioning to linux. away from osx

night zodiac
#

hell yeah. I love all of the remote options.

#

I may have been a bit confusing by having too many pronouns. My local servers are doing stuffs around the apartment and the docker instances in vs code are for work

#

I don't ever really dev on any local servers except on a Pi for the bluetooth and python

#

because bluetooth + wsl2 not good yet

or usb devices and such

night zodiac
#

mine are red for when I wake up in the middle of the night

gentle ferry
#

but you have smart ones

forest edge
#

not much options in a single switch for schedules

gentle ferry
#

dumb ones aren't controllable

#

yeah true

#

what about flood lights? what do you guys use?

#

smart lights/sensors for that?

clear ferry
forest edge
#

outdoor lights are a toss up, depends again if you want schedules lol

gentle ferry
#

yeah you're right, I want schedules

#

don't want them to turn on in daytime

forest edge
#

you can get a dumb switch in either motion or schedule but not both that I am aware of

forest edge
#

well they don't turn on during the day, they have light sensors in them

gentle ferry
#

I see

deft pewter
#

Smart ones can be made not to turn on during the day too...

#

You're using HA, right? You decide how things work.

subtle pasture
gentle ferry
#

I wonder if there are POE flood lights ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge
#

uh

#

lol

gentle ferry
#

@deft pewter i'm asking about preference between dumb stuff and HA

clear ferry
#

I buy a few vinyl records per year

subtle pasture
#

Same

deft pewter
#

I know you are, I saw the question.

clear ferry
#

Last one is Ayreon Into the electric castle

subtle pasture
#

I also purchased a cassette tape recently, but that was for Defcon...

deft pewter
forest edge
#

if you only didn't want them turning on during the day and have pir, the typical standard dumb outdoor light pir sensor works fine. it has a photo cell that prevents it from turning the lights on during the day time

clear ferry
#

Today's 20h 3d print

subtle pasture
#

Hmm, I haven't fired up the ol' 3D printer in a while ๐Ÿค”

last cedar
#

I think I would go with an ambient light sensor for outside lights tbh

forest edge
#

why you going all out for halloween this year?

#

oh the pandemic, i forgot lol

last cedar
#

Can get pretty dark during storms etc

#

That is an adorable pumpkin cat thing

clear ferry
#

All my outdoor lights are ZigBee, albeit only CT, I should have RGB

#

That would be good for Halloween

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry I see you went with the Tim Burton version of the Cheshire cat. I'm partial to the American McGee version, myself

clear ferry
#

American McGees Alice were great games

forest edge
#

one emp blast and atx will be out of everything for a very long time evven after regaining power lol

last cedar
#

Emp blasts are just a way electronics companies can sell you more esp susceptible electronics. change my mind

subtle pasture
#

solar flares intensify

clear ferry
#

I work in EMP secured sites, I'll be fine

forest edge
#

your home isn't tho

last cedar
#

Wait a minute

#

The machines that make electronics

deft pewter
#

Knowing atx, he's built a Faraday cage into the structure of his house.

clear ferry
#

Past 5 barriers 4km inside a mountain

last cedar
#

Are they also susceptible to emp?

clear ferry
#

๐Ÿคซ

subtle pasture
#

Note: Most electronics secured against EMP are not, themselves, EMP resistant. Their protective carrying cases are just shielded.

last cedar
#

Isn't everyones home a faridaay cage?

forest edge
#

no

deft pewter
#

I get cell signal, so no.

subtle pasture
#

Because it's a lot more convenient to shield a pelican case than it is to individually shield every device stored in it

last cedar
#

That was a /s by the way

deft pewter
#

Might dampen signals but the construction isn't designed to prevent them.

#

Woosh

dusky plank
#

doesn't a faraday cage also have limits?

clear ferry
#

Fun fact, I did WiFi coverage testing in a warehouse where they did some interesting design choices with the facade, without thinking about other than the aesthetics

#

There was no mobile coverage inside the warehouse

forest edge
#

this in norway?

clear ferry
#

Mobile providers had to come install antennas on the inside

#

The wifi was good inside though

#

Not outside

forest edge
#

prob more to due with tower distance

last cedar
#

I have been in some buildings like that too, not like that by design but juat awful cell reception. Not sure if it was frequency specific or all signals.

subtle pasture
#

A friend of mine recently had to deal with a support ticket that was related to 2.4GHz shielding... An employee accidentally microwaved their phone.
Why was the phone in the microwave, you ask? Well, their employee phones are locked down to the point that you can't even disable wifi, and there are certain features of their LoB application that only work when on 4G... so employees will often put their phones into a microwave (which is great at blocking 2.4GHz microwave radiation) and wait for the wifi to drop so they can use the company app even in areas with wifi coverage.

last cedar
#

There is a place where I am having trouble atm. Have to run 15M cat cable and pull the router outside to get LTE coverage. As soon as I close the door (with router in doorway) it looses. RSSI is strong but packet loss goes crazy

subtle pasture
#

Modern problems require stupid solutions, it seems...

forest edge
#

gsm has always had a weakness to some building materials like concrete brick

#

solution was to build more towers lol

last cedar
#

I mean you could probably drink the battery if it had been in a microwave long enough

#

So maybe not so stupid

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Or sell customers MicroCell towers to install in their own home...

clear ferry
#

Eh, i enjoy dark sites, phone turned off 1h before reaching site, no phone for all day, noone can reach me all day, wonderful small vacations

subtle pasture
#

Which was some bullshit, because they'd still charge you for the 3G data you used (even though it went through your home internet connection, at that point)

#

And if you had capped / metered internet at home, from the same company, they'd effectively be charging you for the bandwidth TWICE

last cedar
#

This place is like 7km from the nearest village. It is literally in the middle of nowhere. And roof is metal.

forest edge
#

sprint did a thing where they gave away modems that you could hook up to your net, was thier cheap solution to provide better signal to you and your neighbors at the expense of your own bandwith lol

clear ferry
#

Are you keeping an eye on my print @forest edge ?

#

๐Ÿง™ ๐Ÿง™ ๐Ÿง™

forest edge
#

hell no, last time I looked you had brown streaked underwear draped across the printer

clear ferry
#

๐Ÿ‡ ๐Ÿ‡

last cedar
#

I got it working by lifting the router above the rack, there was a lot of metal stuff in the rack, thought it might be shielding the signal a little. Seems to have worked enough. Rssi is still poor but the packet loss was greatly improved.

forest edge
#

lol

last cedar
#

Fire and burglary alarm both use ethernet as primary communications route so it needs to work. Not had any complaints yet. But expecting some soon.

forest edge
#

thats scary

granite hare
#

omg...worst plumbing experience ever trying to replace this water heater...

  1. Won't drain, probably too much sediment build up
  2. Cold water shut off valve snapped when trying to turn it by hand
  3. Can't loosen the gas pipes and will probably need to cut them
I think I'll be calling a plumber on Monday...
forest edge
#

most alarms here use telephone or cell with a net backup

last cedar
#

I think thr fire alarm has gprs backup and thr other id 2g/3g.seems to connect to 2g though

forest edge
#

@granite hare ouch

last cedar
#

@granite hare sounds like you need a maintainance droid, as we talked about earlier.

#

But seriously, that sucks :(

clear ferry
#

@granite hare how old is it?

#

We usually empty ours once every few years here, and they last 25-30 years

granite hare
#

Don't know, couldn't find any dating on it. Have been in the house for 4 years

#

Yeah, first home, learned that today; a bit too late I guess ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

draining them doesn't quarantine longer life, the anode is what does that

#

some you can even replace that rod

static schooner
#

most or all

forest edge
#

not mine ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

granite hare
#

yeah, but should help with the issue mine had where the bottom just rusted out

clear ferry
#

Aye, I heard some Australians speak of the anode, had to check around, but not a single person I know have ever replaced the anode here

#

So it depends on water quality I guess

static schooner
#

weird. and definitely if you have a water softener, which apparently accelerates anode degradation

forest edge
#

@granite hare no sediiment would actually help prevent that if it's caked. that's calcium

last cedar
#

Eletrically heated water? There are so many different ways to heat water

clear ferry
#

Water softener doesn't exist here btw, outside of vegan millionaire houses

static schooner
#

Mine anode went from new to nothing in just a few years

granite hare
#

@forest edge ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

dusky plank
#

my dad would just mix in ground up coffee and call it a day

granite hare
#

@last cedar gas

clear ferry
#

@last cedar electrically heated is the standard in Norway atleast

forest edge
#

it's better to replace them when you start noticing issues no matter what, but really the only thing a homeowner can do to help stretch it's life expency is the anode rod

last cedar
#

Okay, gas is not normal here :P

Yeah atx, there aee many different ways though, pellets, electric as you said, geothermal, heat exchangers and such. Was mostly interested

granite hare
#

I think the only option at this point is to just burn the house down and start over...

forest edge
#

lol

last cedar
#

Nooo!

clear ferry
#

I think I've seen 2 houses with gas in my life here

#

That is for really special people

last cedar
#

Don't write about it here....

forest edge
#

the plumber is going to come in with two pipe wrench and literally strong arm that gas line lose, then replace the cold water valve in under 60 seconds and haul that tank off with water still in it lol

#

you watch and let us know if thats exactly what happens

granite hare
#

lol

#

yeah, I thought about just cutting all the connections real quick and hauling the thing out the back door and dumping it there for another day

forest edge
#

cutting is not a good idea

#

I don't know how your gas line is ran, but rethreading pipe is no easy task

#

you could cut the supply line that feeds the tank directly, that should be a separate semi short piece of flexible pipe

granite hare
#

the thoughts were of a desperate man. just going to call a plumber ๐Ÿคฃ

forest edge
#

prob best

#

well actually

last cedar
#

Of course it would have to break over the weekend though :/
