#

omfg dude.. seriously how are you not already dead

clear ferry
#

I can eat a whole package on a whim

last cedar
#

Same. but it has to be cooked

wet pilot
#

eh, its not a good idea, but raw pork from a first world nation isn't as bad as it could be

clear ferry
#

I've never been food poisoned in my life

#

I eat raw ground beef too, although mostly limited to 50g by the wife

last cedar
#

Wat

forest edge
#

you probably been food poisoned this whole time, you just nevver experienced life without being poisioned to know the difference

clear ferry
#

I have eaten half a package quite a few times though

#

Homemade beef tartare is noice

last cedar
#

Serious question now... When the waiter asks how you want your steak, have you ever said "raw"? 😂

clear ferry
#

Yes

#

Or "bleu" in France

#

Which means 1 second on each side

forest edge
#

Norwegians never heard the phrase don't eat food that fell onto the ground

last cedar
#

"still living" raises eyebrows

clear ferry
#

5 second rule måttafåkkas

last cedar
#

I mean 5 second rule applies everywhere

#

Aha, so you are on the good bit of land, I am on the yellow and blue bit next to you :)

clear ferry
#

Are you remembering to watch my printer @forest edge å ?

#

Or should I just stop paying you

#

🧐

forest edge
#

atxbyea autopsy will look like those pictures you see when they open up sharks and license plates fall out

last cedar
#

I admire your iron stomach. Also slightly jealous that you can experience raw meat without getting ill

clear ferry
#

@last cedar Corona country I see

forest edge
#

you two are neighbors lol

last cedar
#

Yeah, proper disaster here.i think people actually actively seek to be close to each other, not like the Scandinavian norm

#

Yes

#

I can get on my moose and ride over the border

forest edge
#

Are you remembering to watch my printer @forest edge å ?
@clear ferry you never reposted your link to it so it's lost in the abyss

clear ferry
#

Bookmark it baby

forest edge
#

wtf is that

clear ferry
#

@last cedar I've been twice to Sweden already this year for work, and 5 times for shopping

forest edge
#

another night before christmas thing?

clear ferry
#

@forest edge Halloween lamp

last cedar
#

Are you close to the border then? Poor you. Sorry you had to come and visit 😂

forest edge
#

so where is the link to the other 3 cameras?

clear ferry
forest edge
#

I need to get a 3d printer

clear ferry
#

@last cedar 1h20m roughly, but since Corona I've done 6 installs in Sweden from home office

#

@forest edge do it

last cedar
#

Closest I have been is Karlstad. I live in Eskilstuna.

clear ferry
#

I've been often to Karlstad, my parents have a house in Säffle, was driving to Karlskrona in January for a job

#

My fluent Swedish have fooled many Swedes

last cedar
#

Nice!!! I like Säffle, really calm and isolated

clear ferry
#

Used to work in Ireland on a Scandinavian desk, 90% were Swedes

last cedar
#

I mean, I am a British but can mostly understand Norwegian anyway. You probably sound like a native. As long as you don't say "gul böj" because we will know you are an imposter.

clear ferry
#

Akta dig, där kommer farthinderet

last cedar
#

Unless you have Skåne dialekt. Because that needs a decoder ring.

clear ferry
#

My father's favourite Swedish word

last cedar
#

Farthinder hahaha

clear ferry
last cedar
#

After all the raw meat you eat, a fart hinder would be a disaster

#

My mum thought "utfart" was hillarious

clear ferry
#

💩 💩 💩

#

Humans are easy

#

We enjoy the same stuff across languages

#

I used to have a pretty convincing Irish accent, but these days I can only pull it off if I'm talking to an Irish person

last cedar
#

Indeed!

Irish is lovely ❤️

last cedar
#

Hahaha father ted 😂

#

Was ahead of its time

forest edge
clear ferry
#

Mmmm

#

Brain eating amoba

#

Just in time for the election @forest edge

#

🤫

forest edge
#

it's messed up, makes you wonder what else slipped through because people were distracted by the pandemic and weren't focused on thier crticial jobs

clear ferry
#

Here they are freaking out because 50 people got confirmed on Friday,so now they are inducing more lockdowns it seems

#

We have 270 dead so far

#

And 13600 total confirmed

forest edge
#

well they did predict a second spike in the fall for those who had the spike early in the year

last cedar
#

Brain eating amoebas. Sounds like something Trump got the FBI to put into the water /s

#

In Sweden it is more like, oh we have 5500 dead. Lets just all wash out hands. Literally

clear ferry
#

We have been back to normal basically since June

#

Except for plexiglass in front of cashiers

#

And facemasks on planes, but I think that is international

last cedar
#

Perhaps yes. We have similar here with plexiglass. But no restrictions really. Apart from the odd person with a mask, nothing is different tbh

clear ferry
#

Exactly

last cedar
#

Oh yeah, stickers on the floor, with the 1.5m thing

clear ferry
#

I see one in 100 at the store with a mask, mostly elderly

last cedar
#

But people still walk by, nearly running into you

#

Probably less than that here. People don't really make an effort, myself included.

#

I don't ever use alchohol gel, only if I have to go to hospital, but I have been doing for this year.

#

So I guess I am part of the problem too!

clear ferry
#

I only have one fixed customer visit every week, and there is hand disinfectant all over the place, so I use that, and at the store I use disinfectant when entering and leaving, and I do facemask when flying

#

That's about it

last cedar
#

Same with the stores

#

Unfortunately I work for the municipality basically (my job is 99% for them, 1% our other customers) so on average I visit maybe 3 schools a day

#

I am amazed I don't have more colds/ have got covid yet tbh

clear ferry
forest edge
#

schools are breeding grounds here lol

clear ferry
#

Interesting trends

#

@forest edge which is why we do remote school, but that's hard in murica because technology so hard wow

#

🤫

last cedar
#

Can be daycare up to college age, so all ages

#

But how can you home school on dial up? /s

clear ferry
#

👆

forest edge
#

@forest edge which is why we do remote school, but that's hard in murica because technology so hard wow
@clear ferry we do it too but it's optional

clear ferry
#

💩

forest edge
#

I like how your case curve is just steady going up lol

last cedar
#

Rural UK is also a disaster for internet

#

How is Sweden looking?

#

I almost don't dare ask

#

5500 dead yet? Or did that pass

proven pasture
#

@last cedar my mum is in rural uk (kinda)...

#

she's got a 300/300 connection from gigaclear

last cedar
#

Rupester, I am from there pretty much, but we had it good with internet

proven pasture
#

but i know... you're right

last cedar
#

I know of some people who have gone over to microwave links

proven pasture
#

in general it's poor she's just loucky

last cedar
#

Yeah :)

proven pasture
#

and it's a village outisde peterborough so not isolated rural if yu get me

#

but boy is it fast, it's amazing !!!

forest edge
#

I like how the recovvered section for sweden just says N/A lmao

proven pasture
#

recommend gigaclear if you ever see it

last cedar
#

Aha, I was thinking Yorkshire :D gods own county

proven pasture
#

haha, quite right.

last cedar
#

@forest edge plot twist. No one recovers

forest edge
#

certianly not there

last cedar
#

We just throw people off into the sea. Hence the NA

#

Looks bad for the numbers if you report it

#

@proven pasture I think my parents have 108mb via Virgin these days

#

Coax cable to the house

forest edge
#

isn't sweden that country that decided to not do anything when all this started?

last cedar
#

I mean yes

#

Pretty much

forest edge
#

lol

last cedar
#

1 keep distance

#

2 wash hands often

#

Was first introduced

#

Then iirc no gatherings over 500 people

#

That is currently 50 now

#

And avoid rush hour travel, work at home if possible

#

That is basically it

forest edge
#

they were saying on news clips you didn't even do any of that

#

like you all did nothing, as if it never existed

last cedar
#

I mean the 50 peopel gathering rule gets broken all the time

#

Schools for example

#

Might be 9 years of children still

proven pasture
#

i have 200/34

#

i think, from virgin

#

is ok...

last cedar
#

All use the same dining room, not at the same time though

proven pasture
#

pro tip - put the virgin "router" in modem only mode and get a decent router and AP

#

i use an ubiquiti edgereouter-X and unifi APs (x3)

last cedar
#

I am planning to send my parents my current opn sense box when I upgrade to a rack mounted one. Optiplex 7010 with a i350 t4

clear ferry
#

@proven pasture haha, wth that is the strangest speed I have ever seen

last cedar
#

3 unifi aps. Do you like in Buckingham Palace!?

proven pasture
#

@clear ferry it's not actually that, something llike that... haha... i can't remember

clear ferry
#

@last cedar I have 4 active AP's and 3 passive ones

#

And 24 more in my garage

#

💩

forest edge
#

lol passivve ap

proven pasture
#

@last cedar big place yeah but not massive. set the APs to lower power and have multiple APs.. best way i think

last cedar
#

Yeah, roaming is solid it seems

#

I currently use a single eap245 at home. It is pretty solid IMO

proven pasture
#

I do however have one mounted in the roof (external on front of house in the eaves). Covers the front garden, drive and the road - hilarious - i love it.

clear ferry
#

I configured a 1500 ap setup in a hospital, tuning power for minimal overlap was.... Interesting

last cedar
#

We have a 96m2 appartment, so not large

#

You and your crazy wifi setups

#

Are those 24 aps in the garage for cooking chickens when your microwave breaks?

clear ferry
#

You should see my wired ones then!

last cedar
#

I guess you cook chicken? Or do you also eat that raw?

clear ferry
#

Cooking chicken? Just eat em raaaaaaw

last cedar
#

😂

clear ferry
#

No seriously, don't eat raw chicken

forest edge
#

how he is able to eat "raw meat" the waves actually cook the meat enough before it enters his mouth

clear ferry
#

Had a friend who did that, he was fine, but I would never

#

I have standards

last cedar
#

With 24 aps it is probably incinerated

#

I am looking at a house at the moment, 133m2, 2 floors brick built. So probably going to need another ap if it turns out to be nice

#

Also gonna have to sort out some nice cameras for outside

clear ferry
#

I have 252m2, wish I had 350+

#

🤏

last cedar
#

Wow

#

Does that have its own postcode?

#

Do you ever see anyone else who lives there?

clear ferry
#

That would be a pretty normal Norwegian house

last cedar
#

I could legit lose my faamily if we had 250m2

clear ferry
#

My parents have... 330m2, plus two garages and two apartments in the house

last cedar
#

Not gonna lie, that's huge

clear ferry
#

My sisters live in smaller houses, probably 180m2

#

But the house I grew up in was probably 450

last cedar
#

That is defo not what I am used to 😂

#

Must be very spacious

turbid stirrup
#

Luxurious.... 60m2 here.

clear ferry
#

🤏

last cedar
#

I would love a good sized garage though, old volvo has lots of stuff to fix!!

clear ferry
#

Smallest I've ever lived in was 55m2

last cedar
#

And I need somewhere to park my moose

clear ferry
#

I got claustrophobic

#

Only for a year though

#

Before I bought a house

last cedar
#

Your bathroom is probably larger than that now 😂

turbid stirrup
#

yup... that was my plan with this appartment too...
life happened, five years later looking for houses again.

clear ferry
#

My bathrooms are tiny actually, but I have 2 bathrooms and two WCs

last cedar
#

I honestly didn't want to move. But neighbours above moved out and we got an incredibly shitty family living above us. They all have concrete feet. Wake up at 6am and sleep at 11pm, never get any peace when we are at home.

clear ferry
#

I bought in a dip in the market 12 years ago, paid 2.1million NOK, 500k under asking price

last cedar
#

I don't have much choice, I hate being at home now

#

Wow, that is very reasonable

clear ferry
#

Built in 1985 but still

last cedar
#

2,1M nok is about 1 pizza in Oslo right?

#

😂

clear ferry
#

😠 😠 😠

turbid stirrup
#

not 1 pizza... 1 whisky

clear ferry
#

Last I was out paying my own drinks..... 2011?

last cedar
#

This I was looking at is 2.2M sek. Geothermal heating too, so it should be fairly cheap to run

turbid stirrup
#

Colleagues of mine used to fly to Oslo every other week pre-corona

last cedar
#

Brick built so a little ugly but nothing that needs painting

clear ferry
#

I like brick, but that is exotic here

last cedar
#

Orange brick I might add. Reminds me of Manchester

clear ferry
#

I used to fly 1-2 times per week just before corona, but before that it was 2-3 times per quarter, stuff is starting to pick up again so I might get some flight miles again 🤣

last cedar
#

It hasn't won any design awards anyway. But I am more looking for a downstairs room for all my toys :) got to have a teknikrum!

turbid stirrup
#

I'll laugh if covid causes everyone to lose their black / platinum frequent flyer status

clear ferry
#

I have all my fun stuff in the garage, which is in the basement

last cedar
#

Just stay safe please. I wouldn't want to travel by plane even with masks on everyone

clear ferry
turbid stirrup
#

I don't think the planes are the risk... the airports are the risks.

last cedar
#

This has main water supply coming into the garage. Not good for a teknikrum

turbid stirrup
#

shiny guitar

last cedar
#

Lots of nice toys there!

clear ferry
#

I have water too, practical when I have my winter greenhouse in the garage

last cedar
#

This was the main supply. Would be a dead server rack in seconds with a burst pipe. Looked like there was a room on the other side that would be suitable, the room next to the laundry room

#

No windows either, slightly better security

clear ferry
#

Psssh security

#

That is something Americans worry about

last cedar
#

I am paranoid. It is what I work with. I have seen some things

#

If you know what I mean

clear ferry
#

I can count the number of break ins I've ever heard people have on... One hand

last cedar
#

I also think it is very very fun to play with stuff :D

#

Looking at setting up and RCO system at home, if you have seen any of their stuff.

#

It is great to work with, literally anything is possible with enough time and imagination.

clear ferry
#

You can diy a lot of that I guess

#

I've seen people do it with esphome

last cedar
#

I can DIY it all, but would end up being relays controlling external stuff

#

Rather than an integration

#

I am going to try and see how easy it would be to integrate to though, it is on my to do list

#

It points at a server, ideally 24/7

#

I think the server is easier to query than the system itself

#

But unsure exactly how much the server gets to know from the system, other than "important events"

#

Not sure if it logs changes in states for alarm zones etc

forest edge
#

I think he just links the same picture over and over, was probably taken in 2000

#

cause it always looks the same

#

those pop cans are always there

last cedar
#

Hahaha

#

Maybe just drinks a lot of pop!

#

Pant påsen!

forest edge
#

I think it looks way more messy now, that was the most "clean" it's ever been lol

clear ferry
#

😠 😠 😠 😠

last cedar
#

😂

#

But yeah, I need to look into how easy an integration would be. I am guessing well beyond what I can do, I am not a coder.

clear ferry
#

@forest edge better?

last cedar
#

Otherwise it would just be simple integration via relays for movement in zones to trigger lights etc, follow armed/ disarmed states etc

forest edge
#

haha I called it!

last cedar
#

There is a lot going on in that picture

forest edge
#

garage looks like one of those old 80's tv/stereo repair shops

last cedar
#

Wow

clear ferry
last cedar
#

So cruel yet so accurate

clear ferry
#

This was pretty clean too

forest edge
#

here we go, his hand is going limp so we get these "twisted" pictures lol

last cedar
#

I am lowkey jealous of that garage tho

#

It has old volvo repair shop written all over it

forest edge
#

@clear ferry spend a weekend and organize man lol

last cedar
#

Need a heatercore and some hosez, timing belt and water pump and tensioners on her. Not doing it stood outside :P

forest edge
#

3d print yourself some hooks or something lmao

clear ferry
#

I have a Volvo V70 though

last cedar
#

The car of the gods

clear ferry
#

It replaced my Audi A8L

#

💩

last cedar
#

Ours is a 1999 though

#

A real volvo

#

With the italian throttle body that poos in the bed

forest edge
#

volvo's here are overpriced turds

clear ferry
#

I have a 2005, the last range produced in Sweden

last cedar
#

Which hasn't pood

clear ferry
#

I had a 1976 245 at one point, great car

last cedar
#

They need a lot of small routine maintenance unfortunately

#

Which people normally dont do

#

Leading to overpriced turds

#

240s are the stuff of legends

#

I would love a 2007 V70R. But not gonna happen

#

They sell for silly money

clear ferry
#

I might upgrade to a XC90, or BMW X5 or a VW touareg when I'm done with this

last cedar
#

Ours was 16500 sek. Has had a lot of blue box bits put on it in the last 7 years but it is great. Done 290k km (50k since 2013 when we bought it)

#

XC90s are lovely IMO

forest edge
#

@clear ferry not gonna get something that drives itself?

last cedar
#

Touregs V6 diesel was a monster though

#

Or is, not sure how they hold up

clear ferry
#

@forest edge sorry, not falling for the EV scheme

#

@last cedar the V10 touareg is nice

last cedar
#

Looks like I will be paying for a company car, not sure if we technicians can get the v60 t6, failing that we can get octavia hybrids. Which is nice

forest edge
#

@clear ferry thought you all had more hybrid options over there?

last cedar
#

They have silly rules about who can get what cars, based on if you work in or out.

clear ferry
#

I drive 30-40k km per year, I enjoy comfort

#

Hybrids are no use to me and EVs are too short range, or shit comfort like the Tesla

forest edge
#

I heard the teslas were very comfortable

last cedar
#

550HP. I bet that moves

clear ferry
#

The Tesla S is shite

#

The X is much the same

#

The 3 I haven't tried

forest edge
#

yea I don't know much about the variations. I think the x was for range or something

clear ferry
#

X is for bigger families

#

S is for douches

forest edge
#

oh, one was for range

clear ferry
#

And 3 is for wannabe douches

#

All come in different ranges

forest edge
#

but don't you have charge stations everywhere?

clear ferry
#

Yes

forest edge
#

then whats the issue?

#

if you got the means why not go with an EV

clear ferry
#

None for me, I fill diesel and petrol

#

💩

#

I don't wanna stop and charge every 3 hours

forest edge
#

self driving means you could eat your gross pancake with stink cheese and no hands lol

#

think it's longer than 3 hours lol

#

and the charge time on the quick charge i thought was only a few mins

wintry crater
#

Get petrol power generator and charge ur battery on the go

#

😆

last cedar
#

They were talking now about not having enough suitable cables out to the smaller villages etc to support electric car charging

#

In Sweden at least

#

For people to charge at home that is

#

Have a friend at work who lives about 6km off the main road. He doesn't even get 230V out there there is so much drop on the cable

#

It will be interesting how the problem evolves over time tbh

#

I am expecting their solution is to force us to pay for pv panels and a battery though. To save spending on infrastructure

#

Also, totally unrelated question. I run 0.96.5 HA. Time to upgrade? 😂

#

I didn't realise it was so old

clever mortar
#

Yes... just watch the 20 rounds of breaking changes 😉

clear ferry
#

Ooooof

#

0.96

clever mortar
#

It's do-able, but depending on your install method could be painful

forest edge
#

someone did that not too long ago without issue, they went one step at a time

clever mortar
#

Docker and Venv are probably the most straightforward, since you can stand up a separate instance, test your config against it, and keep tweaking until it works

hushed basalt
#

Just be like me and wait for 0.x.3 to be a few weeks old

clever mortar
#

That's close to my approach, which is to wait until it's been at least 2 days without another release in sight

#

0.115.4 may bring back the ability to stream cameras to Google Home hubs too, which would make it the first of the 0.115 series I'd consider

hushed basalt
#

I should probably update from 0.113.2

last cedar
#

Fallen at the first hirdle

#

Wrong python version

#

:/

clever mortar
#

Venv for you then ...

forest edge
#

when the hell is hassos 5.+ coming out

clever mortar
hushed basalt
#

I think I'll skip 114, nothing jumping out to me

forest edge
#

well I hope before nov because I'd like to get off this sdcard that's will be in service for a full year at that point lol

clear ferry
#

Sdcard

#

🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢

last cedar
#

I am still on a pi 2 iirc with an sd card

#

Yes I know

#

No, I don't sleep at night

#

@clever mortar I am going to redo it on non pi hardware

#

No idea if I should do a vm with venv, or a docker or what

#

I want a frontend, something I don't have now

#

Needs to be able to talk to an arduino via usb

#

No idea what to do tbh

nocturne aspen
#

That's sounds like some serious upgrade

#

I think you should get some good hardware first

#

Pi2 is too weak for HA

#

i think that something like a second hand Dell Wyse Z90DE7 would be best value for money (inc power bills) solution for a start

#

and then install a new OS & new ver of HA on it, and try to migrate your config

#

you will be amazed how good the new versions are and how well your new machine will perform

forest edge
#

@last cedar if you are on an rpi2 you may not want to upgrade

last cedar
#

@forest edge with proper hardware I defo do want to upgrade

#

I need a fancy UI

#

need

forest edge
#

just saying the newer versions of HA are not optimized for the rpi2

modern bone
#

Looking for some help, drawn a blank everywhere else. HA is running as a VM but lost connection to if via other computers, first one then everything, including the host computer. Keeps asking to log in but won't accept any of the genuine log in details. Anyone have any ideas?

velvet horizonBOT
#

@modern bone Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

last cedar
#

@clear ferry ty that was helpful

modern bone
#

@velvet horizon I have no idea what version i'm running, just followed a youtube tutorial on installing on a VM. I currently have no access to it from a browser and even worse at linux than I am with HA (of which I have no idea).

clever mortar
#

You'll know, because the console will mention it, and you'll be able to log in as root with no password

young thicket
#

Has anyone an idea which type of plug this is?

#

Sorry maybe not the right topic but I search for 1h on Google and don't find this plug, maybe someone here has an idea... Totally frustrating

clear ferry
#

It's a JST connector I guess

modern bone
#

@young thicket looks like the standard JST .25" spacing

#

@young thicket sorry that should be .1" 2.54mm spacing

clear ferry
#

🤏

young thicket
#

Spacing is 1.5mm

#

This is not a JST XH. The XH is wider

modern bone
#

If you search for JST 1.5 on eBay you will find loads of them. Pre-wires or the equipment to wire your own.

young thicket
#

I think they are JST PH

#

hello

nocturne aspen
#

how many entities you guys have in your systems? how many entities is reasonably "too much" for HA?

#

opening Dev Tools -> States can easily freeze Chrome on my 2015 Macbook Air and even my 32GB RAM desktop struggles with it

#

but i dont think ive got a lot of things automated/templated compared to complexity of some configs i am seeing on github

static schooner
#

it opens quickly for me, but filtering is pretty laggy

#

I have 985 entities

#

other than that, I don't think I'm anywhere near any sort of limit that actually affects the functionality of HA

#

there was a build a few months ago where opening dev->states was very slow, but I think clearing the browser cache fixed it

nocturne aspen
#

ive got 1050, but i think that the valetudo_map is killing my states page - it actually contains pixel per pixel map as content

#

the thing is im still building it up, for example every new xiaomi plant sensor (ive got just 6 so far) adds 6 new entities and ive got whole garden to monitor for my automatic watering

dull chasm
#

1891 on one instance and 600 on other

nocturne aspen
#

wow

last cedar
#

Plant sensor?

nocturne aspen
#

last cedar
#

nocturne aspen
last cedar
#

Amazing

#

That is sweet

#

Is it only bluetooth? Said bluetooth le on a spec sheet I saw

nocturne aspen
#

yeah, its just bluetooth

last cedar
#

And the obvious question, do you have to learn how much a certain plant needs?

#

Some like little water, some like to drown etc

#

How do you blanket a whole house with bluetooth coverage?

nocturne aspen
#

the range on BLE isnt huge, but ive got a tiny Rasperry Pi running https://github.com/ThomDietrich/miflora-mqtt-daemon located in the centre of my house (so all the plants are in range) and feeding data to MQTT, planning to get another one for my garden

#

also when you add Miflora sensors to the phone app it contains a database of literally thousands of pounds together with the sensor values range for each

#

(im not sure how reliable that data is though), so its easy to just enter those numbers to plant sensor confirg

last cedar
#

"Isn't huge" sounds like you would need to test it in the specific environment.

Also, once the pi has the bluetooth info it can send it over wifi or ethernet I guess, so problem solved there.

#

Oh nice, that sounds really well thought out

nocturne aspen
#

and also in my Raspberry Pi im using special long range bluetooth adapter https://www.lm-technologies.com/product/bluetooth-v4-0-dual-mode-long-range-usb-adapter-lm1010/ but im not sure if there's any meaningful benefit of having long range adapter

clear ferry
#

I think I have less than 1000 total entities

#

But in have never had issues

nocturne aspen
#

Oh nice, that sounds really well thought out
@last cedar yeah and you can have more than one Pi feeding data, im planning another one in my backgarden

clear ferry
#

But I also run ha on a 24core/128g server

nocturne aspen
#

Lol

#

and ive been told that my hardware is way too overpowered for HA 😄

nocturne aspen

Is the 210ii doing router duty now?

nocturne aspen

@last cedar how did you know?

#

I am in your server room@nocturne aspen

clear ferry
#

Yeah, that is a whole tock generation @nocturne aspen

last cedar
#

Was just making sure

nocturne aspen
#

@last cedar yeah, R210II replaced my Dell Wyse as a router

last cedar
#

Nah, they have been popular forever

#

And I think they will remain popular forever more

clear ferry
#

Still nagging my boss for a DL380 Gen8 or Gen9

nocturne aspen
#

yeah, performance, power saving, iDRAC upgrade which really makes huge difference, all the extra bits and pieces inside and lots of PCIe slots

#

🙂

#

never had HP servers, ive heard they are super power hungry

clear ferry
#

I need a vsphere 7 lab so I can play with kubernetes, vsan and nsx-t

#

Not more than dell

nocturne aspen
#

only had a HP switch and it failed due to overheating after 1.5 year in my loft

last cedar
#

For pure router duty I wonder how much a R220 with a i350 t4 pulls at idle

last plaza
#

The new NAS I got has PCIe slot - old one doesn’t. I can put a couple of M2 chips in there.

last cedar
#

Although afaik e3 v2 and onwards were not huge jumps in efficiency

clear ferry

I used to run a dl360g4p for a few years as router

#

Now running on a newer celeron

last cedar
#

My x10 supermicro board with a 1220v3 and 32gb ram pulls 22 to 24W at the wall at idle

nocturne aspen
#

im thinking about R220 too 🙂 but for HA and other docker containers, so 720 would stay purely as NAS

last cedar
#

Sounds like a good plan tbh!

#

Also not immune from using say a optiplex 7050 as a router

clear ferry
#

I only got the dell because it was cheaper than a HPE

last cedar
#

Have a 7010 now

clear ferry

Otherwise I would have gone for HPE anyday

That aand my switch pull under 20W at idle (24 port zyxel)

nocturne aspen
#

720 even has a SD card RAID1 built in

#

as standard!

clear ferry
#

@nocturne aspen SD card raid is a gimmick, you still have to shutdown the server to boot the secondary, and reboot to start the mirroring

nocturne aspen
#

Cant agree, it's great for esxi. Single industrial card with such OS will last forever and if something happens to it once per two decades you can get your system up in a matter of 15 mins

clear ferry
#

Which really isn't an issue in 99% of esxi environments because you have enough capacity to withstand multiple host failures ;-)

nocturne aspen
#

but engineers time cost money ! 🙂

clear ferry
#

And with a properly composed environment a reinstall is less than 15 minutes, and if you can't withstand host failures you can run San boot or proper SSD boot

#

The cost is minimal these days

#

You still have to shutdown the host to replace the failed SD card, so the downtime will be there anyway

nocturne aspen
#

anyway, in my home set up, before 720 ive been using a 512GB SSD (because this was the smallest drive i had) to host a 5GB OS, which was waste of ssd and energy

#

aand was less redundant than my current setup

clear ferry
#

I've run esxi in my lab on a 10yo usb stick for over 6 years

#

It never failed before I retired the environment

nocturne aspen
#

i used to have a stick failure on my first server

#

sticks arent designed to last long

#

i mean surely there are decent quality sticks out there which are really though, but you can never be sure when buying a new stick how long its gonna last

hearty depot
#

desnt esxi mostly live in memory?

nocturne aspen
#

but with industrial SD cards at least youve got confidence that it was designed to last

#

@hearty depot indeed it does but obviously it needs to boot up from something (and that disk cannot be used as data partition btw)

hearty depot
#

Just 2 exis hosts with failover and youre golden 😛

nocturne aspen

two esxis means double the already huge power consumption unfortunately

@rancid wharf HA itself is a web server... if you store files under www folder, you can access them using web url

cards are front-end, what you need is something backend script that moves/deletes files - you can have scripts show in cards that you can run

When resilvering a zpool, what does issued mean ?
5.55T scanned at 5.15G/s, 3.85T issued at 3.57G/s, 5.55T total
Anyone knows ?

clear ferry
#

This split is what the new 'issued' number is telling you about. In sequential scrubs and resilvers, 'scanned' is how much metadata and data ZFS has been able to consider and queue up IO for, while 'issued' is how much IO has been actively queued to vdevs. Note that it is not physical IO; instead it is progress through what 'zpool list' reports as ALLOC space, as covered in my entry on ZFS scrub rates and speeds.

#

Also First, a buffer is filled up (it defaults to 10% of main memory, IIRC) with reads that are to be issued. As it fills up, the larger chunks of contiguous reads are issued in as few passes as possible, to minimize the IOPS needed. Periodically, it also completely flushes the buffer and updates the legacy scrub status variable, so that it can be resumed later if the system shuts down (even on older versions of ZFS).

So apparently there's no encryption between the tire pressure sensors and the car (at least for most cars)

#

which therefore means that you can add a passive antenna somewhere around your house to have your current tire pressure in home assistant

dusky plank
#

what protocol is that Hypfer?

last dirge
#

TPMS

#

not all of the systems constantly report though

#

some require driving

dusky plank
#

so you can also make a spamming broadcaster in your car and make all the other drivers panic?

last dirge
#

it's pretty low power

weary summit
#

I guess you could find out the id of your neighbours sensors and send mock tire pressure data

#

please don't do that

dusky plank
#

don't worry I drive a old car, just curious 😄

#

do these sensors actually use kinetic energy from movement or are there small batteries in there?

weary summit
#

afaik they use batteries and need to be replaced after 7-10 years

I did read something about energy harvesting sensors becoming available somewhere in 2010, but that didn't happen apparently? no idea

last dirge
#

they should be replaced after every time you put new tires on

#

and tires are good for 5 years

#

that's for sensors that are in the valve

#

some cars just use a system whereby they detect rotational velocity differences using a ring on the wheel hub

#

doesn't detect actual pressure but detects differences in pressure due to changes in wheel diameter

wet pilot

most of them aren't super accurate. Some vendors are better than others though

Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

plucky sparrow

you either needed answers to quadzillion questions or you are overcompensating a little bit 😄

clever mortar
#

I've been working in IT for a long long time 😉

#

One thing I learned a long time ago is that the more you understand about any system the easier it is to work it

#

Whether that's an operating system, a database, or some big interconnected country spanning monstrosity

plucky sparrow
#

One thing I learned a long time ago is that the more you understand about any woman the easier it is to work it

#

Had to alter it a little 🙂

clever mortar
#

Well, tech, people, the same logic applies

#

Similarly, apply the wrong voltage to a human and it too fails to work afterwards

plucky sparrow
#

human are more broken by design. there are bugs that can't be solved.

deft pewter
#

And just like with the tech industry, sexism isn't cool...

lethal ice
#

yeah mono, I wonder if perhaps application of proper voltage might help fix that problem, too.

deft pewter
#

One can hope

clever mortar
#

I'm up for testing that, there's a large enough problem set that we shouldn't run out of test subjects in a hurry

lethal ice
#

"We're going to need another Timmy!"

plucky sparrow
#

missing consistency could be a problem?

clever mortar
#

We should test that too

#

And ensure we operate in really small voltage and amperage steps

lethal ice

Thoughts? I'm looking at the Arc and am mostly just nervous about its complete lack of DTS support. But also anything new that can be integrated with HA is always fun.

clever mortar
#

I'm loving my Play units, good quality music, integrates well with HA, what's not to love

#

I may pick up some of the Ikea versions at some point 😄

forest edge
#

isn't sono's that brand that just keeps dropping support on stuff making them useless? lol

clever mortar
#

Well, "keep" is a stretch

plucky sparrow
#

I just got a Ikea sonos speaker. lack of connectivity is my main downside. while spotify plays nice, I can't play audiobooks on it with my local player

clever mortar
#

At least unlike Logitech they don't release stuff and then drop it a year or two later

forest edge
#

lol

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I don't do audiobooks over speakers, that'd be a headset only thing

lethal ice
#

Yeah my use case would be primarily Plex-driven.

clever mortar
#

You can play from Plex, though I've never tried

#

Most of my use is streaming from Spotify (was Google Music, but they're killing that) or a local library (SMB)

lethal ice
#

I'm so depressed about GPM going away.

#

I hate YT Music.

clever mortar
#

That's why I moved to Spotify

#

It's a pretty good replacement, and I'm actually finding more new stuff now

lethal ice
#

I went to the opposite extreme and moved to a giant FLAC library and PlexAmp.

#

The stupid thing is I'll probably keep YT Music anyway because not having ads on YouTube is still worth it 😐

clever mortar
#

I'm also really liking the fact that my playlist follows me between devices, so if I'm listening in the car then get home the playlist continues

#

But yeah, all my own music is FLAC on my server

plucky sparrow
#

@lethal ice ublock origin (browser) and youtube vanced (android) to get rid of ads

lethal ice
#

Yeah I know, but then you end up having to set stuff up on every computer, and then there are things like TV apps.

clever mortar
plucky sparrow
#

well the browser addon is needed anyway and the addon should get synced on all your browser installations.

#

and vanced has other benefits like background play etc

#

but yeah, my chromecast still shows ads, but I don't use it a lot

#

I just followed up the idea to play my audiobooks via plex to sonos. But that needs plex pass 😩

#

Not worth only for that. I use my plex only to serve some friends. I still prefer kodi.

i always need to transfer files between computers but i dont want to authenticate my accounts on the computers in question. does anyone know of a solution that is quick easy and free?

#

i was thinking maybe like an open source file sharing system that i can host myself

light trout
vast lily
#

thanks i am checking it out but if its like reslio sync then its not going to be ideal as it requires installing software and sharing keys, etc

#

i want something where i can just grab a file with no links or anything, something i can do from memory

#

normally i use a ftp server but looking for something better

#

looks like sync thing would require installing on the computer

deft pewter
#

You want computers to sync to each other without installing any software on them? 🤔

vast lily
#

no

deft pewter
#

🧙

vast lily
#

ideally i would host my own version of something like mega

#

i upload the file, it gives me a file ID and then i can go to the other computer and tpye in that ID into the web browser and it downloads the file

light trout
#

For sharing anything though whatever you need something to do the transfer, and it needs to be trusted/accepted by both parties

vast lily
#

yeah http would do the transfer

deft pewter
#

🤦‍♂️

#

HTTP is a communication protocol. What's on the other side serving things up in this magical scenario of yours?

vast lily
#

i already said i would self host the server

light trout
#

ownCloud then

#

or NextCloud

#

or any webserver

deft pewter
#

I'm interested to hear how you'll host a server without software.

light trout
#

carefully

vast lily
#

that is waht i am asking for a recommendation on, the software

#

maybe you came in late

#

didnt see that

#

owncloud might work thanks

#

since i will host it myself the links will be something i can rememebr

light trout
#

Home Assistant would work as well

vast lily
#

that might work because didnt HA just add a file manager?

#

i think i read that in the last change log

#

if so it will give me an easy web interface to upload the file

#

id have to research if its possible with nabu casa though as that is what i am using for external access to my HA

light trout
#

No web file manager

#

That's only for profile images, and snapshots

vast lily
#

ah its just a browser

#

its ok i will just t hrow owncloud on a vps

#

if windows had something built in like ubuntu's worm hole i would be golden

#

i know i can do WSL but the idea here is not installing any new software on the computers that i am getting the file on

#

that is why i want it to be web based

light trout
#

Windows has had network shares that predates some of the users in here

vast lily
#

this isnt on a LAN

light trout
#

and?

vast lily
#

i want to be able to get the file from anywhere

deft pewter

Someone should create a way to access resources on a home LAN from the internet.
