this is a Samsung one

I was going to get a bigger freezer a few months ago but ended up upgrading my fridge instead and using the old one as a freezer

not sure about other companies but apparently thier whole line fridge line was falling behind

In the UK I'd buy Bosch, Neff, or Siemens

forest edge

why is Bosch so big there

because they're great

Bosch use to be ok, then it was crap. maybe it's good again? dunno

Reviews from Which rate their fridges highly

last dirge

there's a giant difference between what the US gets with Bosch on it and what the rest of the world gets with Bosch on it

forest edge

problem is no matter the brand name, it's always some other company who actually owns it lol

#

and that sucks @last dirge

#

I use my cheapo wd cloud 1bay nas, supervised install completely mounted via nfs.

valid halo
#

I'm saving up to buy a NAS. ๐Ÿ™‚

dusky plank
#

only thing that doesn't work is the supervised audio container because it mounts a socket and expects that socket to be mounted as root.
so I made my own audio container which just doesn't do that

forest edge
#

those things are retarded over priced for what they actually are

valid halo
#

Yeah. I've been told I can build one for cheap but part of me wants the QA and warranty that comes with something I buy.

the 1bay 4Tb I have is 150โ‚ฌ

I upgraded the drives in my NAS to 12TB

amber shard
#

@valid halo unraid is really great both for being a NAS and also an amazing docker host. I run the HA docker image there

#

It basically lets you run any server you want with just a few clicks

valid halo
#

Hmmm I see. I was looking into Synology

amber shard
#

Synology is good but expensive, very different way of doing things

valid halo
#

Oh I see Unraid is software. Hmmm. Might be worth looking into.

amber shard
#

Right, you'd (generally) build your own machine, add your own drives, etc, but it gives you greater flexibility than any of the commercial NAS kits will provide

#

I've moved all of my home automation stuff to my unraid machine, all in different little docker containers off of the marketplace, plugged in a deconz stick and can basically throw away my hue hub and my smartthings hub now ๐Ÿ˜‰ Also everything happens a lot faster with local execution and etc

dreamy rock
#

Unraid is super..

#

Btw, anyone here that is on the current beta? If yes, is the more-info-card by thomas loven working for you? And the light-entity card by ljzmera?

tame sand
#

Are you running unraid and homeassistant on the same machine?

#

@dreamy rock

trail crag
#

@tame sand you can run HA OS as a VM in Unraid or there's a standalone HA container app that can be used from Unraids app store

dreamy rock
#

@tame sand Unraid is the software (slackware) used on my server. I run HA in docker (which runs natively on unraid). I used to use vmware and hyper-v for this, however since Unraid has docker built-in, I only need docker for everything

#

the container built by balloob works great

tame sand
#

That wa sthe question

dreamy rock
#

though I will mention that I run Core (so no supervisor)

tame sand
#

I am running homeassistant in docker aswell

#

Together with influx

#

May I ask what specs you have?

dreamy rock
#

specs are on the left side

tame sand
#

Are you using a nuc?

dreamy rock
#

no,

tame sand
#

Nvm the motherboard is gigabyte

dreamy rock
#

basically this is my previous desktop pc ๐Ÿ˜›

#

though it is kinda power hungry (it uses 120watt constantly)

tame sand
#

And all these apps are running without any hiccups? Impressive ๐Ÿค”

dreamy rock
#

yes

#

average processor usage is around 8%

#

and as you can see in the screenshot, I've only used around 8GB or RAM in total

tame sand
#

though it is kinda power hungry (it uses 120watt constantly)
@dreamy rock that's why I was asking actually... I am thinking about switching to a different platform, ideally low power... So there is the nuc but it's expensive or I would need to undervolt the cpu....

shy comet
dreamy rock
#

@tame sand you're probably better off getting a NUC if you are looking for power efficiency

#

I prefer performance over power efficiency (but I will upgrade to a ryzen 7 next year)

#

though I will mention that Unraid is not free

#

it costs 59 for the basic license (max 6 disks)

tame sand
#

Valid point... But I don't have nearly as many containers running so I should be fine with a "older" nuc...

dreamy rock
#

if you need more disks you will have to pay extra (which wont be a problem on a nuc, since you don' thave space for new disks anyways)

#

I think a nuc can easily run all the containers I run

#

my machine is pretty old (haswell i5, 2013 I believe)

#

before that I used an i7 980x (hexacore), which was 2011 (the first generation i7) ๐Ÿ˜›

shy comet
#

i feel like google always has their hardware announcements 2 weeks after apple

tame sand
#

We have a 4 disk synology at home... So I wanted to "merge" it with my pi4... And unraid seems like a good investment tbh... It is actively developed and has a quite big community

dreamy rock
#

you could take a look at proxmox if you are looking for something that is free

#

which is used by many of the HA devs themselves

deft pewter
#

i feel like google always has their hardware announcements 2 weeks after apple
At least when the new iPhones are announced, you only have a couple of weeks to wait for the good stuff ๐Ÿ˜‰

dreamy rock
#

though in my experience Unraid was definitely the easiest to maintain and install of all the (type1) hypervisors I have tested (I've tested Hyper-V, ESXI, Proxmox and Unraid)

shy comet
#

im looking forward to the new android tv dongle....hopefully it rivals the amazon fire stick

tame sand
#

What is the vsc server you are running? Is it for remote disk access via vsc?

dreamy rock
#

not sure I understand the last question ๐Ÿ˜›

tame sand
#

In your Screenshot there is a CodeServer instance running with the logo from vsc

dreamy rock
#

ah yes, it is visual code

#

it runs in a container and can be accessed through the browser

#

like the vscode addon when running the supervisor

#

it's basically the same thing ๐Ÿ˜„

tame sand
#

What are the benefits from this compared to a locally installed vsc instance?

dreamy rock
#

well, that you can run it in a browser ๐Ÿ˜›

#

but I use a local variant at home ofc

tame sand
#

I never heard of this before and I am using vsc for quite some while now ๐Ÿ˜‚

dreamy rock
#

I never really use the container, I only use it when I don't have another choice (and for that it is great)

tame sand
#

True

dreamy rock
#

to my knowledge it has almost all the same functionality

tame sand
#

Ok nice. Thanks a lot

dreamy rock
#

I have also added it to the sidepanel in HA so that I have quick access to it (just like you would when running the addon with the supervisor)

tame sand
#

Nice ๐Ÿ‘

#

So you basically just render the webpage (vscode.yourserver)in the view?

light trout

light trout

yes

dreamy rock

@lilac ether the certificate is tied to the domain name. You need to access your instance using the same domain name internally and externally. It is possible to have two certificates for two domains leading to the same endpoint, but I don't know how that's done with duckdns/letsencrypt and you still can't tie it to an IP, only a domain name.
@low harness or he could run his own DNS server, and have that point to his internal IP

steel crag
#

AVR? SmartUPS?

jovial marten
#

sure enough, that's what is happening

#

EATON

#

im getting the voltage readings from my inverters

steel crag
#

yeah but is it smart and does it have AVR

#

or is it a backup battery only

jovial marten
#

nah, dumb inverter

#

backup battery only

#

which is kinda redundant now

#

since i have a 10.3kWh battery on the house

steel crag
#

need some regulators sounds like

jovial marten
#

its this entire area

#

we used to get brownouts, so they turned the power up a bit

steel crag
#

lovely

jovial marten
#

but during the peak of the day, the voltage goes just outside of spec

steel crag
#

we get brownouts often too, hence why everything is on a smart UPS

jovial marten
#

thats the thing i could hear clicking

#

the old one didnt do it, so it must have had a wider acceptable voltage range

#

our 'standards' only changed in 2018

steel crag
#

oh you may have to turn it upside down for it to work

#

youre in au

#

๐Ÿ˜„

jovial marten
#

"Since 2000, the nominal voltage in most areas of Australia has been 230 V,[3][4][5] except for Western Australia and Queensland which both remain at 240 V,[6] though Queensland is transitioning to 230 V. "

#

im in Queensland too.

#

The new standard stipulates a nominal 230 V, and the allowable voltage to the customer's point of supply is, as mentioned, +10% to โ€“6%. However, the preferred operating range is +6% to โ€“2%. (244 V to 225 V)

#

apparently my State (Queensland) started to transition to 230V in 2017, with hopes of being completed by July 2020.

#

well, that didnt happen, clearly.

steel crag
#

well clearly they got some other document LOL

jovial marten
#

ill complain to the retailer tomorrow

#

257.6 is too high

fallen patio

this is making me thankful for UK mains

lilac ether
#

257.6 is certinly very high. We're at 230 officially and I've never in my life seen more that 242

clever mortar
#

I normally see around 245V-250V here (UK mains)

clear ferry
#

That is damn high

#

I have never seen higher than 239

#

But that will only be in winter, when they are upping the voltage to compensate for -35 and it suddenly gets hot

#

And phase load

night zodiac
#

I'm about to return my ender 5 if creality doesn't help me soon

jovial marten
#

@lilac ether where are you located?

lilac ether
#

@jovial marten Spain

jovial marten
#

so the issue is, most of the country is on 230V nominal now

#

except Queensland where I live

#

we are still on 240V nominal

#

so 240V -10/+6%

lilac ether
#

well, seems that now it's within legal range then

#

wait no, limit should be 254

#

yup, your provider must do something about it

#

what's way too high

jovial marten
#

yup

#

i will be calling them in the morning

#

so the story goes, we used to get brownouts in this area.. so they bumped the voltage up a bit

#

but its too high

rare condor
#

@jovial marten you aussie?

jovial marten
#

yep

rare condor
#

Sorry just missed scrollback ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

jovial marten

rare condor

rare condor

#

ooof

#

That's bad.

#

But reflects PV voltage rise a lot of Aus is dealing with day to day

jovial marten
#

yeah, but its out of spec

#

so if stuff blows up, it would be on them i guess

#

ive just had a new meter installed too, and that shows instant voltage, current, wattage, plus live export amount etc

clear ferry
#

All of Norway got new meters that do that last year

clever mortar
#

UK is still working on that...

jovial marten
#

the old 'smart meter' was crap

#

it only had cumulative in/out

rare condor
#

wishie what kit are you using?

jovial marten
#

a 'lifetime' counter...

rare condor
#

I have Eastron SDM230 and Fronius Smartmeter

jovial marten
#

well, this is a messy story

rare condor
#

Installed per circuit meters on each sub circuit last week

jovial marten
#

so on my side, I have 2 x GoodWe GW5048-EM Hybrid Inverters

#

26 x 235W solar panels on one, 20 x 330W solar panels on the other

rare condor
#

GoodWe is alright of the cheape brands

jovial marten
#

and a 10.3kWh LiFePO4 battery

rare condor
#

Nice must have decent sized house for all those panels

jovial marten
#

it started as a 2 bedroom.. its now 5 bedroom 2 bathroom

#

<-- has too many kids.

rare condor
#

lol

#

Do you have heat pump hws?

#

offgrid?

jovial marten
#

so each inverter has its own 'smart meter' on it.. but they are stupid

#

so the new 'smart meter' that got put on the house is an EDMI Atlast Mk7C

#

yeah, heat pump hot water

#

Quantum 340L

rare condor
#

Yeah I never liked installing Goodwe Inverters tbh, I had issues with Modbus output datasheets never matched

jovial marten
#

these ones seem ok

rare condor
#

Nice , I suppose given you have a battery you don't bother running that on a timer

jovial marten
#

the problem i am having is... i have 2 inverters, but both have a clamp meter on them..

#

but only 1 inverter has a battery

#

so what happens is.. at night, it might show that ill pulling 600W from the grid.. fine.. but then the Sun comes out, and the other inverter wakes up, and it ALSO goes "you're pulling 600W"

#

so the stupid portal goes "hey, you're using 1200W!"

#

that SEMS Portal thing is dumb

#

since I have 2 inverters but 1 battery, if my battery is at (for example) 60% charged, the portal goes "SOC 30%"

#

because it goes "battery 1 is at 60%, battery 2 doesnt exist.. so 0%"...

#

then averages it.

#

dumb.

rare condor
#

yeah, so if I was you I would grab the RS485 output from the goodwe inverter and use an ESP8266 running this: https://github.com/jantenhove/GoodWeLogger chuck that into HASS and have your own metrics using influxdb/grafana

jovial marten
#

ooohhhh

#

looks

#

"Pay attention, RS485 will only work if you disconnect the WiFi module and restart the inverter. They cannot work simultaneously."

#

well, that sucks.

rare condor
#

There are other options

jovial marten
#

when i had 1 inverter, the SEMS Portal data was great, and accurate

#

it just doesnt seem to handle multiple inverters well

#

especially if 1 of them doesnt have a battery and the other does

rare condor
#

yeah fair. I never used it as I never liked the notion of a device in my LAN accessing Chinese or any remote servers.

jovial marten
#

its on a VLAN

#

firewalled off from the main LAN

rare condor
#

yeah that's the way to go

#

If the portal goes down do you have any local logging?

jovial marten
#

established/related traffic is allowed (ie, if i call out to the inverter, it can repsond)

#

nothing local at the moment

#

i used to on my old ABB inverter

rare condor
jovial marten
#

i had an RS485 to USB adapter

#

oh, you can read it locally?!

rare condor
#

This is new

#

I only just found out about this

jovial marten
#

that would be better too

#

right now, if there is a blackout, i have the google minis say "I have detected a blackout. The battery is at 60%. Please turn off any high powered devices"

#

but, it can take 1-2 minutes for the inverter to send to the portal, then HA check the value

rare condor
#

neat, I spent a lot of money on Fronius inverters, but a Goodwe Inverter is half price so next time I wire up a site I would prefer to use it

#

Support just wasn't there for clients though :/

jovial marten
#

the GW5048-EM is a good unit

#

but its a hybrid unit made for batteries

#

you dont need a battery of course

rare condor
#

What battery are you using?

#

and what made you choose to invest in a battery?

jovial marten
#

i didnt buy from 'yessolar' though.. thats just a link

#

so the unit on the left is what i have

rare condor
#

yeah fair, decent

jovial marten
#

bottom is battery, middle part is the breaker etc, top is inverter

#

but its just a cover..

#

behind it, is a GoodWe GW5048-EM ๐Ÿ˜„

rare condor
#

How much did the total install cost if you don't mind me asking?

jovial marten
#

ok, so this is a mess

#

i had an existing ABB inverter with 26 x 235W panels

#

so i replaced the ABB with the eStore system.. that was $8200

#

so thats inverter, bms, battery, installation

#

and for that, they had to do some rewiring to put certain things on the backup side of the inverter

rare condor
#

wow, that's cheap as

#

Just STCs

jovial marten
#

then, being winter, i spent most of the day charging the battery

rare condor
#

or any other rebates?

jovial marten
#

so i decided i wanted more panels

#

so i got the 20 x 330W panels, and another GoodWe GW5048-EM

#

and that was... $5990 installed

#

just STCs

rare condor
#

Ah fair. I got a Fronius 5kw inverter + 20 x 330w panels installed. cost $1200 after rebates

jovial marten
#

im going to try that integration.. brb

rare condor
#

Let me know

#

I would be stoked if that works

jovial marten
#

i never thought to check UDP

#

restarting HA

#

i wonder if i can ask the dev to add support for multiple inverters

rare condor
#

If it works I might take a look and submit a PR as I would like to use it with a couple of Goodwe 5kw inverters later on

jovial marten
#

hmm

#

not seeing any sensor yet

rare condor
#

I looked at the code it should log errors

jovial marten
#

im running the inverter_test.py now, from a docker terminal

#

odd responses from both

#

but then again.. they are firewalled off, so perhaps thats an issue.. let me relax some rules

#

nope

#

the one with the battery is responding with invalid/unexpected data

#

and the one without the battery (its likely sleeping now) isnt responding at all (it responds to a ping though)

rare condor
#

๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

Sucks

jovial marten
#

just adding a new firewall rule

#

allowing UDP from those 2 devices

#

just incase its being 'caught' somewhere

#

ill try again in the morning too

#

because inverters have different firmware

#

the one that is 'sleeping' will have GoodWe original firmware

#

the other one has a different firmware related to the battery, for some reason

rare condor
#

yeah fair, night mate. Good Luck hope it works out.

#

I should go to bed too, lockdown vibes pushing my sleeper later and later

jovial marten
#

ok

#

nmap confirms both have port 8899 open

#

so there is hope. Maybe its just in a different format, which might be able to be added

rare condor
#

๐Ÿ‘

jovial marten
#

responded to an issue on the github.. will see how i go

#

thanks for the headsup

rare condor
#

np

jovial marten
#

hmm

#

the PVMaster app connects directly to the inverter

#

and the inverter also seems to be listening on UDP 48899

#

hmm, so someone with a 5048ES is saying they are also figuring out data via UDP

wet pilot

our slow cooker uses one

fiery vector

honestly never heard that term in my life

jovial marten

so C13 is a normal computer one

fallen patio

pretty common in the uk

jovial marten

C15 is what you will most likely find in data centers

fiery vector

c15 is thicker i guess?

fallen patio
#

yup, can put a C15 plug in a C13 socket, but not hte other way round

jovial marten
#

today you learned...

#

@fallen patio well, you caaaan.. if you have a knife handy lol

fallen patio
#

haha knowing me i'd be more likely to rig the two up with jumper cables and blutack

jovial marten
#

i needed to get a switch up and running for testing one day.. took a knotch out of a C13

#

i wouldnt put it on site like that, but it was fine for bench testing

fiery vector
#

where does the notch come out of exactly?

jovial marten
#

look at the link i sent

#

has diagrams

#

look at the pretty pictures

fiery vector
#

ohhh ahhh

very prety

jovial marten

i always feel wasteful when i use a C15 on a PC

oh well.

When is the next release, I think it was due already?

plucky sparrow
#

tomorrow I think

#

hoped it would be today ๐Ÿ˜„

trim bobcat
#

Yeh that's what I thought

#

Gone are the days of every two weeks

#

Back in the day it was every other day ๐Ÿ™‚

plucky sparrow
#

3 weeks is fine too.

#

5 weeks like for this release is long. but on the other hand I'm more hyped ๐Ÿ™‚

trim bobcat
#

Dont matter really, they release a major and in the next two weeks there are 4 minors ๐Ÿ™‚

#

I havent been following it

#

is there something sweet on the horizon?

#

I just tought my docker script was broken ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Why is this still on this version :?

plucky sparrow
#

a lot of stuff from "what the heck" is in the new release, that could be quite nice.

trim bobcat
#

oh I see

plucky sparrow
#

Don't know why this cycle was longer. If because of summer or only because of the birthday tomorrow.

Does anyone have any recommendation on motion sensor hardware for use in automating lights on/off? Perhaps a multi-sensor so it can do other things too. Are the DIY ones by BRUH Good? I have a 3D printer so I could make it pretty easy.

So I am about to brag a bit. I just got my YIO remote and it is nice, it has a sense of presence when holding it and the back for sure does not feel like it will fall ourt of your hand. I currently have it in the dock and it does not look like it will tip over at all. Still need to charge it and turn it on, but so far it looks good

there are different kinds of "farming" lol

ugh if the sonoff zigbee temperature sensors turn out to be worth a crap I may have to have zigbee in my home ๐Ÿคข

clear ferry

ZigBee

#

๐Ÿ™

sharp spire
#

I have those and they work fine for me

#

Though not great range

#

needed a bulb in the room between to relay

clear ferry
#

I have actually never seen a low signal issue with ZigBee, someone posted a picture from z2ma the other day with a lot of weak link devices, and I went "didn't even know that was a thing in z2ma"

forest edge
#

I have those and they work fine for me
@sharp spire did not think they were out yet?

#

oh you mean zigbee in general

sharp spire
forest edge
#

yea

#

bangood site said preorder

sharp spire
#

I got them from that site back in June

forest edge
#

how are the batteries holding up?

plucky sparrow
#

nice to see some competition for the xiaomi sensors. anyone compared them yet, any conclusions?

sharp spire
#

it's reporting "80" for battery after ~3 months

clear ferry
#

I have a few Xiaomi sensors that have been running for almost two years

#

Not complaining about battery yet

sharp spire
#

though I'm not sure how specific that is

#

I also got the sonoff zigbee button, but I prefer the Xiaomi ones

#

better "click" to it

forest edge
#

20% for 3 mo would be around a year and half

plucky sparrow
#

I have a lot of xiaomi sensors. almost no battery replacement yet. the single button is the one that does not work flawless, there are times where the first press is not recognised. everything else runs fine.

forest edge
#

funny thing battery for those cost as much as the unit itself lol

clear ferry
#

I have three single button Xiaomi, never had issues

sharp spire
#

I bought a big pack of batteries off amazon

plucky sparrow
#

you can't calculate the battery life flat. you have to see how long it lives till its completly dead.

sharp spire
#

yeah it's pretty hard to accurately measure

plucky sparrow
#

is also matters what battery type and everyone has its own discharge curve

#

the xiaomis show 100% for months until it stats dropping

sharp spire
#

well that's fine - as long as it has some indicator when it's dying

forest edge
#

those thing are more than twice the price

#

well that's fine - as long as it has some indicator when it's dying
@sharp spire they are suppose to alert you at 10%

sharp spire
#

I have it setup with zigbee2mqtt so I don't know what kind of alert I'll get

forest edge
#

@sharp spire are you using thier zigbee bridge?

sharp spire
#

no, I'm using a dongle in my rpi

forest edge
#

I wonder if the bridge is worth a crap

#

at 16 bucks

clear ferry
#

Zigbee2mqtt 4 lyfe

sharp spire
#

probably if you use their app it'd be worth it

plucky sparrow
#

i paid about the same for the xiaomis, but sometimes only because multiple at once.

forest edge
#

I do like how the xiaomi ones can go to -4f

#

you could put the thing in a freezer lol

clear ferry
#

My Xiaomi buttons work fine outside in -30

#

Commie units to you @forest edge

forest edge
#

probably if you use their app it'd be worth it
@sharp spire if there isn't already there will be esphome or tasmota for it

#

well the site says -20

clear ferry
#

It survived this winter

#

Let's see the coming one

plucky sparrow
#

esphome started supporting zigbee right?

sharp spire
#

The Xiaomi buttons only cost around $7 each - I put one outside so we'll see how it goes

#

the first ones I ordered right at the start of the pandemic took 4 months to deliver

forest edge
#

I like the bridge aspect because I can put it anywhere but need to find a decent review to see how well it communicates with other non sonoff zigbee crap

clear ferry
#

AliExpress is 10 day delivery time for me now

plucky sparrow
#

4 months is a good time ๐Ÿ˜„ I had plenty that needed even longer.

light trout
#

Have you moved @clear ferry ?

plucky sparrow
#

Longest so far is over 6 months. Already got a refund and it came 2 months later

sharp spire
#

they went to singapore air which paused operations

#

as long as you have other wired zigbee devices, it doesn't really matter where the hub is located

forest edge
#

aliexpress would be like 6 months for me

sharp spire
#

it's usually a couple weeks at worst

green inlet
#

@tidal bronze , I have worked like 30+ hours the last three days and wife out of town so taking care of the home front also. Laundry sucks a different kind of suck.

tidal bronze
#

30+ that's on the low side ๐Ÿ˜†

green inlet
#

๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

well thats a bit of downer, this review says they couldn't get ikea or xiaomi to pair with the zigbee bridge

sharp spire
#

xiaomi devices use some slightly non-standard protocol

forest edge
#

well this is with the sonoff firmware so who knows what may change with something like esphome on it

#

Laundry sucks a different kind of suck.
@green inlet you don't throw used clothes away and buy new ones?

plucky sparrow
#

i hope the sonoffs are fully standard protocol

forest edge
#

it's a diffrent chip than whats used in the popular dongles

#

they say the range on it is fantastic

green inlet
#

Sonoma, pretty sure I still have clothes from high school

#

I change my underwear out every five years wether it needs it or not ๐Ÿคฃ

plucky sparrow
#

interessting, sonoff has also a CC2531 dongle and they are referring directly to zigbee2mqtt !

sharp spire
#

you date your underwear @green inlet ?

forest edge
#

date and name so he don't lose it

sharp spire

@plucky sparrow that's the one I use

ebon heath

I need new socks. The seam on the goldtoes hits my toe knuckle in just the wrong spot

#

Old man problems

green inlet
#

Old man problems is when you start wearing your socks as underwear and vise versa. The seam on the sock is an age old problem that someone really should solve. I mean, we talk on mini computers, out lights turn on by themselves, cars drive themselves. Come on man, make seamless socks.

ebon heath
#

Maybe I should get those socks that have individual toes on them
