Awkward that it doesn't appear to support different streams to different sections of the house (simultaneous kitchen and office, playing different music)

#

anybody have a KVM that does displayport that they'd recommend?

#

I've tried two now and they've both had serious drawbacks

#

the first one had a 110dB noise when you switched, and it was only USB2

#

second one keeps restarting one of my computers, not sure why

orchid rose
#

Second one sounds like a grounding issue?

last dirge
#

the computer goes to sleep after 15 minutes, like normal

#

but everything in windows has been closed

#

and everything's as grounded as required

orchid rose
#

What do you mean by restarting?

last dirge
#

it'll go into standby/sleep

#

then I hear the fans do the "I'm restarting" noise

#

and if I switch to the computer, it's restarting windows

#

and none of the stuff that was running before it went to sleep is running

orchid rose
#

That's weird

#

I can understand it booting up from like USB wake up or something but restarting like that I don't know

last dirge
#

I was hoping this one would work

#

it's using DisplayPort daisy chaining technology so you just hook up a single cable and it's got a secondary HDMI output

#

I'm about to say to hell with all of it and buy an ultrawide display

deft pewter
#

Recently got an ultrawide with built in KVM and I love it. Makes me wonder how I managed before.

last dirge
#

which?

#

I will buy the shit out of it

deft pewter
#

Seems to be low in stock everywhere, with some people scalping. I got my just under RRP.

#

Built-in cam and mic are decent enough.

last dirge
#

how dramatic is the curve?

#

and is the stand hiding a VESA mount?

deft pewter
#

Curve is subtle and I've noticed no fading toward the edges. Yes to VESA.

#

Stand is one of those gas-lift things too. Pretty good job, considering the weight of this thing.

last dirge
#

I can't find it for sale anywhere

deft pewter
#

Almost the same, just no cam, I think.

#

Not sure the KVM capabilities are identical but I didn't see anything that suggests it wouldn't be. That was my backup option if I couldn't find the 346P1 anywhere.

last dirge
#

this looks nice

deft pewter
#

Yeah, I love it. Enough width to have my IDE on 2/3 and Outlook/Teams/whatever on the remaining third. And the extra height means I can keep a terminal or something open under the IDE at all times while still having room to code.

#

I know there are higher res options if you spend more but that was a nice compromise. I think I paid ยฃ470 for it.

last dirge
#

the stupid KVM I got cost almost as much as that monitor

#

this shit's goin back

#

gonna steal the single monitor arm I got for my wife, give her the dual one with a VESA mount for a laptop

#

she'll be set up

deft pewter
#

Check how sturdy the arm is. If I ever use one with this, I'm getting one where the bracket is attached directly to the pole, not one that 'reaches' out. I'm not kidding about the weight of this thing.

#

I attempted to put it on my dual arm and the whole thing was leaning sideways.

last dirge
#

the one I got has an adjustable gas shock

#

you have any software for easily snapping windows to set areas on the screen?

Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.

When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:

  1. What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
  2. What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
  3. Is the problem uniform or erratic?
  4. What's the exact error message?
  5. When did it arise?
  6. What exactly don't you "get"?
  7. Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?

wet pilot

There are some other docker commands like that that can help

wet pilot

There's an extra space in there

thick dragon
#

I think it's something to do with the MariaDB instance. Because NPM is connecting to MariaDB too.

#

Everything seems fine, and HA seems like it can read from it just fine.

#

Biting the bullet and doing a full restore, then will see what disk usage is like. Surely it can't actually have that much used.

wet pilot
#

Try the system prune command

thick dragon
#

I'm pretty sure the disk is only using a few GB of space. When I ran du, that certainly seemed like the case. But df reported 100% usage. So no idea ๐Ÿ˜ฆ But yes, will run those commands when it comes back online.

wet pilot
thick dragon
#

Alright, I'm confused. I've given my server 40gb space in the VM, but perhaps it's just not mounted or something, because /dev/sda2 only has a capacity of 20gb.

Hmm, didn't think to resize the actual partition in the OS after changing the assigned space in ESXi -_-

thick dragon
#

Cool, that was more complicated than I expected, but fixed it up. Turns out I originally only gave Ubuntu a 16gb partition. Silly me!

I spent the weekend getting IPv6 set back up on my network, i disabled it for some reason

#

apparently windows did an update over this past weekend

#

and it's now got something like spotlight

wet pilot
#

didn't it always? like since vista days?

#

start -> type name of thing -> enter

steel crag
#

I don't speak of vista in polite company

last dirge
#

@wet pilot to invoke this you hit alt and spacebar

#

and it pops up in the middle of the screen, exactly like spotlight

last dirge
#

I only noticed it because I use a program called Launchy and that's normally its hotkey invocation

#

and Windows stomped it

dusky plank
#

I love this guys accent

last dirge
#

@deft pewter liar!

#

this monitor's not VESA mountable

pure vine
#

Yay, I worked out how to get a device to request a static IPv6 suffix, rather than using DHCPv6

deft pewter
#

Which one did you get? The 346P or the older 346B? The P's definitely mountable.

last dirge
#

346B1

deft pewter
#

Other convenience
Kensington lock
VESA mount (100 x 100 mm)

#

Judging by the photos on that page, the mechanism to attach/detach the stand is even the same.

#

The photos of the rear of the monitor shows a square(ish) panel. That panel should have a little thumb thing you can push up away from the bottom of the square, and the bottom edge should then be free to come away. Lastly, lift the screen off the top of the square.

last dirge
#

it doesn't line up with the VESA mount I've got

deft pewter
#

Hmm. Bad mount? ๐Ÿ˜„

last dirge
#

maybe

#

it's fine with its own stand

deft pewter
#

I've had one in the past that was too chunky for the space allowed on the monitor.

last dirge
#

it's taller than the little stand my laptop sits on

#

so there's no way to say "for this input, use this KVM setting?

deft pewter
#

You mean like binding display inputs to peripheral inputs?

last dirge
#

I always have to switch both the input and the kvm when I want to switch?

deft pewter
#

I'll see if I can remember the steps. I only change the input source.

last dirge
#

the USB-C with my laptop is a no-go

deft pewter
#

USB Settings > KVM > Auto

last dirge
#

so I'm having to use the USB-c to A adapter and a DisplayPort cable

deft pewter
#

Then changing the source will also change the KVM.

#

Yeah, I'm using the same setup from my PC, then the USB-C for the MBP.

deft pewter

Odd. Drivers?

Apple ๐Ÿ˜’
They're good for some stuff. Most dev teams at my place get them because they're 'basically Linux' without needing to know Linux.

last dirge
#

looks like the "auto" is only supported if you're using USB-c

last plaza
#

Carbon fiber monopod and Tripod with ball head is on sale now. @last dirge check out slickdeals

#

Iโ€™ve always wanted to get a monopod, got one now.

last dirge
#

it's both?

#

reviews look less than stellar

last plaza
#

Not the best or top of the line quality for sure. The best ones would cost you upwards of $500

#

I am not a full time photographer, and that should be better than the aluminum tripod I have.

last dirge
#

I want to get a super compact one

#

the aluminum one I've got is decent enough for non-travel

last plaza
#

The lenses I have wonโ€™t work with the super compact one. I got 70-200 f2.8L II usm. That glass is heavy

#

Basically the camera hangs over the lens. The lens is usually mounted on tri/monopod

last dirge
#

get an offset tripod mount

#

how much does that lens weigh?

silent canyon
#

anyone using HA with Ecobee thermostat and Flair AC vents? I am considering them for my 2 story home.

wet pilot
#

smart vents are generally considered to be a "bad thing"

#

they can cause back pressure issues in the system which isn't great for the blower and or compressor

wintry crater
#

yep

#

check for dust ๐Ÿ˜„

wet pilot
#

unless you have a variable speed compressor + blower, single zone HVAC systems are tuned to handle the whole place. Closing things off causes pressure issues. You can already notice this by closing a door to a room and feeling the air rushing underneath

silent canyon
#

so I have looked into all the negative so far which is partialy the reason I am looking at flair, the system works with Ecobee and has a build in safety that never allows more than 1/3 of all your vents to be closed ever. Given that my home has 12 vents 4 which are downstairs on the the first floor, my thought was to gain the ability to close the downstairs ones once everyone is in bed enabling the upstairs to cool more efficiently .

wet pilot
#

probably better to look into a smart damper instead

silent canyon
#

incredibly expensive based on the quotes I have received so far.

#

that was my first option, it is now my last resort.

last dirge

#

also, my sensor was filthy

last plaza
#

Remote triggers are cheap

#

Fujitsu is more expensive because of teleconverter and uv filter kit included.

last dirge
#

UV filter is like $20 max

last plaza
#

I need to get one of those teleconverter. It cuts down light several stops, my f2.8 will probably be like f4.5

#

The polarized lens is a bit more expensive for me. Spent about $150+ on it

hushed basalt
#

@silent canyon get splits

#

Split systems have a shitload of advantages over ducted/central systems

#

@last dirge all filters are not created equal

#

I think the most expensive clear filter we had was aroumd the the $2k mark

last dirge
#

the lens is already UV coated

#

so having an extra UV filter on it is just for crash protection

hushed basalt
#

Yes but making clear glass that doesn't affect the image is seriously hard and expensive

static schooner
#

using a lens hood is good crash protection for a lens + it actually improves the image ๐Ÿ™‚

hushed basalt
#

I would recommend a clear filter of some sort

#

It can save you from an expensive front element repair

#

But I wouldn't get an expensive lens and make it mediocre with a crappy filter

#

I'd look for something with anti-reflection coating as well

static schooner
#

do you guys not use lens hoods?

#

any part of the lens shouldn't be the first thing to impact something else (in my humble opinion). A piece of plastic is way cheaper, and it cuts down on glare

last dirge
#

depends on what you're shooting and where your lighting is

static schooner
#

I see a lot of happy snappers walking around with the lens hood reversed all the time. worst of all options

last dirge
#

my 35mm prime lens has a Hoya UV filter on it, 10-24 has a Chairo on it

#

prime lens came with a hood but I haven't shot anything where I've needed it yet

#

big lens came with a tulip hood, used it last night to try long exposure stuff to help block some pollution

#

the one on the prime lens kinda looks like a chisel-tip sharpie

static schooner
#

there's math behind the weird-looking ones. the cheap-o ones just give you a plastic cylinder

last dirge
#

but it goes on over a filter, so that's cool

static schooner
#

that's a weird one

last dirge
#

yeah

static schooner
#

I've never seen a square-ish one

last dirge
#

crop sensor

static schooner
#

but I guess it makes sense if it's targeting the sensor

last dirge

so that may be contributing

#

color calibration tools FTW

hushed basalt
#

Lens hood won't help you when you drop a 70-200mm in the bag

#

A clear filter can

#

Plus you still need to clean the lens and a clear will give you a sacrificial layer to clean

#

Rather than a $500+ element

#

Plus makes it a little bit harder for dust to get inside your lens which is the worst of all

#

Pro tip also. Use Pancro lens cleaner

#

Nothing else comes close

#

Buy it now and throw out whatever fluid you've been using before

#

Kimwipes are also good for tissues as well. Very cheap and easy to use.
