jerks!
Well, that's Google for you
You can get them refurbished for cheap
Bye bye Google Play Music now ๐ข
I've already migrated everything to Spotify, and it's almost as good
(some things are better, some not so much, but ๐คท
I'm still on google play music and will be until they physically stop me
Have a look at hifiberry.
oof, that yamaha stuff looks nice, but is so pricy ๐
Yeah, gonna hack together something w/ rpi + dac hats + generic speakers I think
spotify + shoutcast or whatever as the source
Not sure how well it integrates with HA.
I tried Google music after 10? Years using Spotify, after the 3 month trial I went back
I have 3 Chromecast audios for sale :)
Look at that block diagram: should only take a sec to setup - https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2016/02/18/multi-room-audio-with-snapcast/
Awkward that it doesn't appear to support different streams to different sections of the house (simultaneous kitchen and office, playing different music)
I'll have to figure this all out and write up a blog post
If you pair the Chromecast with a HDMI capable receiver you can use them for just audio too
chromcast audio.
+10 time machines
quad, that mayo is good
I haven't had a chance to really eat much of it but I've ate a tiny bit on a fry
Good stuff. You should try searing some steak with that. ๐
I love deviled eggs and this mayo is very deviled eggy already with it all being yolk, haha. I need to make some deviled eggs with it and get extra deviled eggs
@night zodiac here's another one to try
๐ฟ
deam DSL... it fells so 2000
I had DSL for like a year and then cable came out
it was all so fast, we got the auto dialing phone modem so we didn't have to connect every time we used it, the DSL, and then cable all within a few years
internet was getting crazy
fiber ll be here
- I hear the same line for like 3 years now.
I read chromcast audio? How the ||some swearing|| you getting data over?
'the fuck you mean
@tidal bronze I have 3 bottles of that kewpie stuff to go through
I tryed a 'lot', best I came up was a icecast radio feed with like 20 secconds delay
@night zodiac this and that together on a Angus burger. ๐
mayo on mayo
You can thank me later.
I have a work meeting on the hour and I don't even know what I am there for
I'm not ready to talk
I need my coffee but if I drink it any faster my heart with start doing some weird shit
Drinking? You don't have an IV installed for it?
@deft pewter I prefer an enema
yeah, what about your coffee though
Like my women, hot and rich
here's another one to try
@tidal bronze Is that made from real perineums?
anybody have a KVM that does displayport that they'd recommend?
I've tried two now and they've both had serious drawbacks
the first one had a 110dB noise when you switched, and it was only USB2
second one keeps restarting one of my computers, not sure why
Second one sounds like a grounding issue?
the computer goes to sleep after 15 minutes, like normal
but everything in windows has been closed
and everything's as grounded as required
What do you mean by restarting?
it'll go into standby/sleep
then I hear the fans do the "I'm restarting" noise
and if I switch to the computer, it's restarting windows
and none of the stuff that was running before it went to sleep is running
That's weird
I can understand it booting up from like USB wake up or something but restarting like that I don't know
I was hoping this one would work
it's using DisplayPort daisy chaining technology so you just hook up a single cable and it's got a secondary HDMI output
I'm about to say to hell with all of it and buy an ultrawide display
Recently got an ultrawide with built in KVM and I love it. Makes me wonder how I managed before.
The Philips Brilliance curved WQHD display with DisplayHDR 400 gives crisp, outstanding visuals. USB-C and a secure pop-up webcam with Windows Hello increase your productivity.
Seems to be low in stock everywhere, with some people scalping. I got my just under RRP.
Built-in cam and mic are decent enough.
Curve is subtle and I've noticed no fading toward the edges. Yes to VESA.
Stand is one of those gas-lift things too. Pretty good job, considering the weight of this thing.
I can't find it for sale anywhere
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-346B1C-Adjustable-PowerSensor-Replacement/dp/B07Y5ZZW3Y that looks the same, at least at first glance
Almost the same, just no cam, I think.
Not sure the KVM capabilities are identical but I didn't see anything that suggests it wouldn't be. That was my backup option if I couldn't find the 346P1 anywhere.
this looks nice
Yeah, I love it. Enough width to have my IDE on 2/3 and Outlook/Teams/whatever on the remaining third. And the extra height means I can keep a terminal or something open under the IDE at all times while still having room to code.
I know there are higher res options if you spend more but that was a nice compromise. I think I paid ยฃ470 for it.
the stupid KVM I got cost almost as much as that monitor
this shit's goin back
gonna steal the single monitor arm I got for my wife, give her the dual one with a VESA mount for a laptop
she'll be set up
Check how sturdy the arm is. If I ever use one with this, I'm getting one where the bracket is attached directly to the pole, not one that 'reaches' out. I'm not kidding about the weight of this thing.
I attempted to put it on my dual arm and the whole thing was leaning sideways.
the one I got has an adjustable gas shock
you have any software for easily snapping windows to set areas on the screen?
On Windows, I've been using PowerToys. Lets you define zones and quickly move between them. I haven't found a free tool I like for snapping to zones.
On the Mac, Magnet.
yikes, 2 weeks delivery
@deft pewter this was in the event log
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Was that for me or for Mr K?
sorry, @orchid rose โ๏ธ
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xffffb88f6710b127, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff8071d8f53e2, 0x0000000000000002). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 93b116ff-31e6-4b9b-8ce4-c4e94fa17085.
There's a tool that'll allow you to read that file with more detail
yeah, found it
looks like it's something related to my video drivers
updated those
got these guys hanging around
no clue WTF they are
PCI en/decryption... HDCP over HDMI?
nice plex down hard lol
a lot of different stuff's been shitting the bed today
What kind of data does everyone have set up for a person? Example: Location, Battery percentage, Lights associated (Office), Door Associated (Office), etc (Even if this data isn't set up on the person entity itself)
none, zero, zip. not here to make the governments job easier
got a drive throwing SMART errors in my RAID array, need to upgrade disks
anybody know of any SATA drives or shuckable externals that are on sale right now?
@last dirge do you upgrade them all at once?
@last dirge how long can you hold out? without a doubt best buy will have them for black friday. That's not too far away
@hushed basalt finally switched from Debian desktop to Ubuntu. Not really sure what I was thinking tbh
Love Debian server, Debian desktop...not so much
Had a good laugh at this comment: #the-water-cooler message
What kind of data does everyone have set up for a person? Example: Location, Battery percentage, Lights associated (Office), Door Associated (Office), etc (Even if this data isn't set up on the person entity itself)
@manic galleon I didnโt realize you could associate entities with a person ๐ฑ what would the use case be for that. I just have location, battery and activity atm.
@hushed basalt finally switched from Debian desktop to Ubuntu. Not really sure what I was thinking tbh
@scenic radish but Ubuntu is Debian...
just go with something like mint and make it look like win10 ๐ถ๏ธ
There ainโt no gettinโ offa this train weโre on.
I used to use VScode to manipulate my config.yaml HA running on a RPI4 so not using Add-on and it worked with showing entities etc. But now I have just got a new LapTop and my old VScode setup (is not migrated to my new Laptop) - so now how do I get connected again - I have tried with new token and entering intern URL but Vscode still complain

Morning! New topic for me. Where do you guys place your raspi or PC for HomeAssistant. Can I put it in a network closet in the basement or will I have an issue receiving status and executing commands?
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
There is only one topic ๐
This is the most funny forum ever - 1 out of 100 = you get help. 99 out of 100 = you get .....
Most people get help. You just have to ask in the right place.
This is the only channel on the server you can't ask for HA help in. This is a lounge.

Seriously. There was even a conversation on screen about not asking for help in here when you asked that.
sorry mono !
its not that serious ...just direct to correct chanell as there question would get lost here very quickly
This is life or death @dull chasm
seems that way sometimes
it was yesterday when i had 4k worth of audio gear turning off and on @scenic radish
What channel would you place this in?
If you're not sure, start in #general-archived
no worries @noble otter what was the question ...it was deleted
Shael's question is still up there - equipment in closets.
I was about to restate it, but then the fear of the bot was instilled within me.
no worries
The bot just does what it's told. I'm the grumpy one.
simple answer to your question would be range ....if closet has range prolly best place
Thanks Vasiley
I'm also throwing an SDR decoder in there. So I guess I'll know when I know - it'll either work or not!
What CPUs do you guys have in your main computers?
3700X
@noble otter I'm confused why you think physical location matters unless you're using radios like for Zigbee, zwave, etc. This is assuming you're wired
i9-9900h
i7-2630QM
@scenic radish I will be using radios as well as an SDR dongle
Then yeah it depends on a number of factors
hmmm today i will ask a support question in lounge
3700x
16 jiggaram
@tiny summit I can upgrade them as needed. The array won't be resizable until the smallest drive is updated
@brazen fable I don't want to risk losing the array so I'll at least buy one drive now. I think it's got WD reds in it
@scenic radish you shucked a drive before?
you can reuse the enclosure?
You could if the screw mounts lined up
isn't that a standard thing?
Not necessarily
The wd drives i shucked didn't have all 4 screw holes in the bottom in the right spot
I could only mount 2 screws to it
In my enclosure
they'll be going into a screwless enclosure
and the drives I pull from the NAS are WDs
I'm buying one, just to fix the array
I'll do more research later
all of these social distancing changes are pretty great IMO
keeps people away from me
offers new "interact with as few people as possible" options

There are #ios_and_mac-archived and #android-archived apps for those that want them
Not everybody wants them
HA is about options
The app isn't required
You're commenting that ... there's an app ๐ค
This is the not Home Assistant channel
There's a long list of options for things about Home Assistant below
If you're complaining that there's an app, then ๐คท
Then... what's the point of your image posts?
he's pointing out that "the best app is no app"
It's not a warning, don't worry xargs. I suppose what you've pointed out is ironic but I think the point is that you don't need to use an app to control things, the automations are what shine
while on the install loading screen, there's a specific callout for the apps
But an app is available for those who want
This is about automation, but there's a fancy GUI too. Maybe that should be banned ๐
is the app any better than the web UI, honestly?
ISTR the app uses the web UI
Notifications and location tracking if you want it I suppose
(and does other things too)
It does
It's basically a web wrapper, but this time it actually makes sense to be
Unlike some other "apps" that are web wrappers
Lots of folks wanted an "all in one", so the project provided
Well, if you're pointing out it's amusing, you could have opened with that, not phrasing it as a complaint ๐
@deft pewter RAID manager is saying I have to take steps to insure parity
i r o n y
"the best app is no app"
"find our official apps here"
anyhow
got a new lens yesterday
it's pretty cool
super wide angle
Like... 8mm?
related, @scenic radish I can take those pics your mom wanted now
@deft pewter 10-24
f4
10 is pretty sweet. I've never had anything that wide.
Prime too? ๐ฎ That wasn't cheap then
TWSS
no, not prime
it's zoom
hence, 10-24
but it's still 11mm shorter than my prime lens
My bad.
but you're right, it wasn't cheap
It's been a long time since I've done any photography but my favourite lens is/was my 100mm macro.
APS-C, so really it was more like 160mm.
TAKE PICTURES
d'oh. Shoulda guessed
real estate photography
No tilt/shift for those perfect verticals?
and also, make really cool perspective shifting stuff
Yeah, 10mm will mess with perspective ๐
like this
10mm
24mm
pretty neat to watch the changes just from changing the distance
You should do 10mm portraits of people. Get right up in their faces and turn them into caricatures.
@last dirge sigma has a few โartโ series lenses. The widest lens I have is 18-35mm f1.8
I donโt have a full frame camera either. I like crop sensors as I do portrait or macro photography mostly.
I got the sigma 16mm f1.4. Perfect for aurora photography.
So are you 10mm or 24mm yourself @last dirge ?
Don't even look at my Canon 16-24 f2.8 anymore. I probably should sell it.
@brazen fable I just got the email that mine's ready for pickup
ahha
it's white label reds
same hardware, but they switched to white labels because people were shucking the red labels and selling them on ebay ๐คฃ
just look for emaz on the code
at the rate the capacities keep increasing my next round of upgrades are going to be friggin 20tb drives lmao

I'm still doing my best to stick to the 4TB I bought years ago.
That seemed like a massive investment at the time.
oof
Meanwhile I'm probably going to set up another array because someone is giving me a 50TB Flac library i'm optioning to mirror
I feel quite inadequate now.
Use it
- This channel's not for support
- The project probably has a license in the GitHub repo ๐
(2) - it does - and it's linked from the main HA pages too (TL/DR: Apache 2.0)
@hushed basalt shucking that was dead simple
now, just gotta get the RAID manager to be back in parity
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, says two more drives reported bad sectors
the one I replaced just wasn't powering on
this might take a while
Re ๐ ing (checking ๐ ity consistency)
is add-ons best place for help with WG? i chgd routers and then move sd to ssd before i thought to test WG. I had it working first try on original install but have been stuck with tunnel connected but no handshake for several days now
If you're using a wireguard add-on then yeah. Check your port forwarding on the new router
A ๐ of them?
Me: Checkout as Guest
...
Me: add two of those to my cart please
Best Buy:
PARITEEZ NUTS
so I guess over the next week I replace the drives as they come in
then I'll have ~45TB of storage
that feels ridiculous
That's one hell of an image collection.
Starting to feel like photography is a cover story ๐
That's one hell of a ๐ collection.
it's mostly "cut the cable" replacement stuff
@scenic radish Thanks. I've been so focused on where to look that I'v missed a button called "enable" --- what a waste of time. You are appreciated
No prob, it happens ๐
Anyone good with Docker(Compose) around? I am new to compose, and could a bit of assistance...
.ask ๐
Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.
When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:
- What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
- What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
- Is the problem uniform or erratic?
- What's the exact error message?
- When did it arise?
- What exactly don't you "get"?
- Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?
Just remember to do the asking somewhere else if it's about HA.
Since this was so not related to HA i was going for pm-conversation, but OK. ๐
Non-HA is cool here. Carry on ๐
I am trying to create a docker-compose "thing" and I need to pas a local file into the container.... I am making the thing public, so i wanted to be able to pass the file to the container as a path on host in the docker-compose.yml. Is this at all possible or am I thinking about this all wrong? The file I want to pass is a license for the software running in the container.
Oh nice!! ๐
Indicating a file from mlacking trailing slash?
Well, you can pass folders also without a trailing slash
You're just mapping parts of the file system, whether folders or individual files

yeah, I'd love to upgrade but /me whispers "there's a pandemic going on"
do you live in Norwat Norway where shipping takes forever?
I live in The Bahamas where there's customs duty on everything, shipping takes forever and is expensive, and I haven't worked since March

@peak cloud Ghostbusters?
and the Pi I want is $119.99
@forest edge Not intentionally, no.
I finally bought me a pi4 when it went on โsaleโ a few weeks ago at Best Buy. Havenโt even unpackaged itโs yet.
lol
what Pi is $119?
the 8gb model isn't even that much
you must be talking about a kit
Iโm not even sure for what I am going to use it...I already have Zigbee2mqtt running on one pi, wyzesense2mqtt on another, and thatโs pretty much all I need pi for right now.
Heโs not in continental US, Iโm assuming.
@peak cloud minecraft server?
The Raspberry Pis are getting more and more expensive these days. It used to be $35 range and most affordable for students.
@forest edge Meh, I donโt play Minecraft, but the kiddos do.
Hi all.. newbie to HA here... so am likely to ask some stupid questions ๐
The Raspberry Pis are getting more and more expensive these days. It used to be $35 range and most affordable for students.
@last plaza still cheap considering
but will try to put them in the right places
@midnight adder good or else you will face the dreaded No Support Here attack from the bot
wouldn't want to fall foul of that sort of attack!

Like sudoku?
Very similar.
crossword puzzle looking game
helps keeps dales brain cells from vanishing
you must be talking about a kit
@forest edge yes the 8gb and case kit
Each row and column can only contain each number once, and the sum of each row/column must equal the number above/beside it.
think it's canakit
Canakit is a trustworthy kit provider. ๐๐ป
Heโs not in continental US, Iโm assuming.
@peak cloud The Bahamas
So my assumption was correct!
Canakit is a trustworthy kit provider. ๐๐ป
@peak cloud it's who I got my last 4 Pi's from

you could always try Brilliant or whatever that site is where you see those commercials about brain games lol
Thatโs for old people to stimulate brain exercises
is it? maybe i should look into then
some of us are old people
If using Raspberry Pi OS (formerly known as Raspbian), just pop the SD card into your computer and create an empty file named ssh on the boot partition.
I downloaded that app for my father in law on an iPad and asked him to play 1 hr every day.

Look at the big brain on @peak cloud
Good job @peak cloud. Hereโs the next one.
Ummmmm is that even English?
Regex
Oh jeebus. That makes it actually seem fun!
I solved it once, years ago, when I was supposed to study for an exam.
Can I start smaller? ๐
That is the small one ๐
Nooooooooo
Same idea
Only have to solve for two directions, not three.
Cool! Iโve been looking for more
I think Iโll start with 2D.
Wonder why thatโs never shown up in my googles...
I came across it a while back when I intended to brush up on regex. I gave up very quickly.
I use as little as I can get away with and I'm happy knowing the basics.
I suspect itโs like vim golf after a while. The solutions are highly optimized for the problem and has bearly no real world application.
I can appreciate the power of regex when done properly. It beats having to code some long-winded alternative. It can just go way overboard.
And if no-one can maintain it... it was a waste of time ๐
I personally love regexโs. They are fun when done right.
Maybe. I do like to see an elegant solution to problems. Just sometimes people do the 'clever' thing instead of the maintainable thing.
it's dale
@peak cloud and when you are done with that you can really raise the bar to the next level. https://cdn.cdnparenting.com/articles/2018/10/585140818-H.jpg
That looks way too easy.
I dunno, i tried putting Nutsack for number 4 and it don't work
@last dirge are you aware of the power signal problem with shucked WDs
Basically if your power supply supplies voltage on the 5th sata power pin they won't turn on
Can be defeated by carefully placed electrical tape though
yeah i had to do that for one of mine
speaking of which i need another 8tb wd
down to 4tb free on my nas]
shit my NAS is only 4TB
LOL
got about 900GB free but I'm about to offload my TV folder to another 750GB NAS
"only"
Anyone able to give me a hand working out why my Ubuntu Server VM would be reporting 100% disk used with df, when du is only showing around 20gb of the 64gb allocated to the VM?
4tb is more "usb harddrive" than nas...
@thick dragon lsof
I get looping lsof: no pwd entry for UID 911
Uhh, that's not great ๐
Tl;dr probably deleted files that are still open somewhere taking space. Try rebooting and see if it helps
Have done multiple times. Looks like Docker isn't even loading now.
Could be. Could be something to do with MariaDB not closing DB properly or something. Any idea how I'd debug it?
Kill the VM and start over? Hopefully backups are a thing you use?
Yeah, have a backup every few days. Not gonna help if it happens again though.
docker image prune -a
That freed up some space, thanks @wet pilot! Seems like the lsof error was related to an instance of Java that was spawned by a user that doesn't exist. Some weird Docker stuff no doubt. Should really remove Watchtower as it might be updating to stuff with breaking changes :/
There are some other docker commands like that that can help
That's the typical one though
So weird. NGINX Proxy Manager seems to be failing, but the image itself hasn't been updated.
Definitely something funky going on with Docker. Failing to start NGINX Proxy Manager and Unifi Controller.
I think it's something to do with the MariaDB instance. Because NPM is connecting to MariaDB too.
Everything seems fine, and HA seems like it can read from it just fine.
Biting the bullet and doing a full restore, then will see what disk usage is like. Surely it can't actually have that much used.
Try the system prune command
I'm pretty sure the disk is only using a few GB of space. When I ran du, that certainly seemed like the case. But df reported 100% usage. So no idea ๐ฆ But yes, will run those commands when it comes back online.
Alright, I'm confused. I've given my server 40gb space in the VM, but perhaps it's just not mounted or something, because /dev/sda2 only has a capacity of 20gb.
Hmm, didn't think to resize the actual partition in the OS after changing the assigned space in ESXi -_-
Cool, that was more complicated than I expected, but fixed it up. Turns out I originally only gave Ubuntu a 16gb partition. Silly me!
Wow, the recorder integration is fucking smart! Turns out that my partition had been full since the 5th. It has been recording events locally, and now just caught up and wrote the events to the server. Bloody smart!
anybody using moca adapters?
I cannot pair a 2.5 adapter with a 2.0 one ๐ฆ
Will I regret buying a Raspberry PI 4 to run Home Assistant? Should I buy something more powerful?
You'll only regret it if you leave the History Recorder on and don't store your data on an external HDD @marble plaza. Leaving recorder on is a surefire way to kill your SD card in the space of a few months.
I ran HA on a Pi3 for a couple of years. Running on a Pi4 with an SSD should be fine.
only a few things need to be turned off on the recorder not everything. i've only got 3 entries excluded and those are custom ones like the time and been fine
Is there reliable way for running SSD with Pi4? I am new to all this and i searched for some guide but i didn't find any well documented tutorial. I have all the hardware, including SSD, but at the moment i am getting familiar with HA installed on sd card. I am searching for solution for most reliable setup so i can install my project and not to think about it anymore
I would love to include SSD, but if there is not reliable way currently for doing that, is running from an sd card and turning recorder off completely good enough?
Well, it depends on your install method ๐
Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.
-
If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204
-
If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714
-
If you're running
dockercommands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842 -
Finally, if you use
pipto install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809
Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.
In #449717345808547842 or #551864459891703809 you can USB boot, so you can install your OS directly on the SSD. With #330990055533576204 you can't yet, but there are other options. #330944238910963714 can be done with USB boot, or you can use the same options as for #330990055533576204
This smells like support
Wait I'm in the bathroom so could be mistaken
๐คฃ๐๐คฃ
I would like HassOS installation but that is a little tricky at the moment. I guess the best way is to try supervised then
Thanks, and sry for using wrong channel!
Dont worry about me, I have no say here lol
This is a place to just chit chat but as people that have simular intrest it is hard not to talk shop but it is ok ....the problem comes when somebody comes expecting detailed help which will clutter the channel or get lost quickly
@midnight adder
Yeah, we changed the rule a while ago to allow talk about home assistant as long as it's not for support
^^ see again reason why to never listen to my banter
now if I'm talking shop in another channel maybe even best to ask me if I'm not confused
Noted! Really excited about HA and this community! Trying to catch up as much as i can, but i will surely have a lot of questions :D
If they put up with me, there's hope for everyone
well I'm flashing the new image to my SD card, and drinking coffee
@midnight adder what's complicated about running a HassOS
As far as i know hassOS doesn't support boot from usb ssd
what kind of hardware do you have at home
Rpi4, sd card, ssd and one usb3.0 to sata for which i am not sure is it supported for rpi4. I can buy one of "supported" usb3.0 to sata if i know that this method will be reliable
I also like idea that i put OS on sd card and use ssd for database logging and everything, but that is also not enough tested
Nope, no home server
I need system that will be reliable as it can get. I will not do any upgrading or adding new devices later on that system
Is disabling recorder enough that i can go with only sd card? Is there anything else that i can disable so that i minimize sd card wear as much as possible

Depends what kind of remote access
@analog drum Bingo. Effectively useless for @ home clients of the 99%.
@dull chasm using any LFE transducers for seating ?
no my pocket book is too small
They are pretty cheap.
Have a friend who added some of those to a sim racing chair
plus i have a hard time convincing wife to shove things up her up &^%$ much less those that cost ๐คฃ
Trying to get the 10hz to 20hz. Now they have the gaming chair module by buttkicker @wet pilot
Nice
my rear sub goes to 18hz ....but yea 10 would be nice
If you have spare outs on the outlaw aura transducers are $50 a piece
@forest edge what we are looking for is the Y axis movement, come on now.
Anyone here an alarm nerd? (specifically paradox mg5050)
Just ask the question, then people can answer when they're around ๐
I decided to wire up my own alarm, by replacing the panel. Now I'm getting to wiring up the PIR's and the zone on BabyWare always says open. Not sure what I've done wrong, took out everything and just have + - Z C wired to just 1 PIR and still issues =/
Where would one go to get support for a dockerized HA install that won't boot anymore (or at least becomes unresponsive after boot)?
dumb question but have you tried rebooting the host?

@hushed basalt I slid the drive into the enclosure and it worked
so, I think I'm good
hassbot sure is talkative
They've topped him up with beer instead of oil
@deft pewter you around?
I am
'only' ๐
it weighs a kilo less than my current 27" monitor
Oh? I wonder what the old one was made of.
lead, apparently
it's not really "old"
gonna be sad panda if the Philips looks worse
The Philips looks awesome. Fat bottom bezel to house the buttons, thin on the 3 remaining sides.
The base for the stand is chunky but I'll eventually get a single arm mount for it.
Haha, yeah. I'd considered that but wasn't ready to drop a grand.
it's not IPS
but the ASUS is
so we'll see, I guess
I'm stuck with 1080P on this giant ass monitor until the new one gets here
I'm honestly a little surprised that the edges don't look dull but I think the curve takes care of it.
either the monitor or my video card won't push higher res over DVI
It's not like I'm going to sit to one side of the monitor.
And now home assistant works through a reverse proxy. yay
I swear sometimes this stuff is simply magic
Even as a developer, I'm convinced computers run on magic.
It'd explain how my code even runs...
lmao. I'm a glorified sysadmin
I'm fully convinced it's all hoodoo
I literally have no clue how a reverse proxy even does it's thing. I just know what to input and it works
I understand the basic concept and what it's used for.. but as far as what makes it tick I couldn't tell ya
I'd be interested too in what makes a reverse proxy a reverse proxy instead of a simple proxy
Proxies are a little like NAT. It's just a system of defining what gets routed where (or blocked completely).
I think it's just that proxies normally control egress, reverse proxies control ingress.
Some other nerd can confirm or deny that blatant guess.
๐คทโโ๏ธ doesn't explain anything to me ๐
Egress = stuff going out
Ingress = stuff coming in
oh ok
but like.. you ever think how complicated it gets when you're using ngnix to reverse proxy to another websever or multiple types of webservers
yeah, you should see my apache conf...
and the fact that most websites run that way
my apache even reverse proxies http to my openvpn server
already did, but for networks which block udp and stuff i still use openvpn
and the android integration is pretty great. Even my wife can use it
Someone recently asked for help fixing their ExpressJS reverse proxy. It looks a lot cleaner and easier to follow than nginx: https://discordapp.com/channels/330944238910963714/332167321311510530/741209456075079681
I initially tried to talk them out of using JS instead of nginx... but their solution is neat.
nginx has uh
a gui thing now i saw
let me see if can find it
I'd like to switch to nginx but last time I looked it didn't support the CONNECT method
I'm not using it
Well nginx itself doesn't... but there might be tools that create the nginx.conf for you via a UI
Someone made an add-on of that for HA. I use it, it's great.
I don't want to be reliant on my HA install for important shit
lmao
as much as i love HA it breaks too often
Not everyone has the patience to hand crank their confs. If that lets people use nginx with less knowledge, that's a good thing.
are you scared of ur HA baby
Mine's been rock solid. Doesn't restart unless I tell it to.
And I've got the resources so i just spin up a vm for everything
Docker isn't too scary anyway.
I never liked how the docker networking worked
if i could run docker along side my VM's i probably would
but i can't and I'm not adding another always on machine
well I don't even use my reverse proxy anymore because my wireguard is on all the time anyway and it routes the domain over it, so my ports stay closed until I open them with Homekit
If i had better upload i would probably run always on vpn
but i only have 40mbps upload
me too ๐คทโโ๏ธ don't need more on my phone, better stay connected secure I believe
Lol I get like 300mbps down on my phone and I use it a lot/ connect it to a travel router to share that connection
bandwidth is good.
I just set up something for a web server
not NGINX
I totally forgot what I did though
that's probably bad
lmao i save everything , bookmarks, PDFs, etc related to things i learn
I learned that lesson teh hardway
so when it comes time to dive back into something i haven't touch in a while i have all the original documentation i used to figure it out
you know what's funny
using a windows computer to remote into a windows server to run a windows VM to run/test things in an environment that's not connected to a network
nested remote sessions can be that way sometimes
using a windows computer to remote into a windows server to run a windows VM to run/test things in an environment that's not connected to a network
@brazen fable yes
ohhhhh K I am almost back 100%
@brazen fable: I just moved my NGINX Proxy Manager instance off my HA install for the very same reason. Wanted it on a more reliably always-on device. Now running on my Ubuntu Server VM. I am (of course) running Docker on it though. Why the reluctance to use Docker?
Because I already have a ton of always on machines, and many of my "must have" applications are windows only, so I'd rather have just the one fairly powerful always on windows machine than a bunch of less capable Linux/windows machines. So I use virtualization in windows and I get everything I want
@thick dragon
Plus having an always on machine to remote into from my phone/laptop when I need Horsepower is handy
Fair enough. There is obviously a lot of "must-have" applications that are also *nix only too, so depends on your use case.
ayyy just remembered I have a sata m.2 drive collecting dustโI can finally get HA on my pi without the SD card
enclosure was only like $18 too ๐ฅณ
You already have the M2 converter/hat?
ordered it yesterday. My SQLite db was wrecking performance and I moved it to memory, but now I can have an actual log.
Yeah, I moved to an external MariaDB instance on a different host so that I can use it for a DB for other stuff. Working well so far.
Is there a way to make your own cards?
like all of the custom cards? ๐
Back in a new house and got a new ZigBee stick other the zzh. Installed hassos on unraid as a VM this time instead of the nuc. Starting clean
whats wrong with the nuc?
Nothing, but the server is just downloading TV shows so why not run everything on the machine with resources
No need having 3 machines running
Sounds like sound logic to me
Typical.
I spent Saturday morning building a babymonitor alert to apple watch for my wife for when I go away
And the baby hasn't spent a night in the cot since.
They know. They know!
lol
Hey everyone
sup
The 'Examples' page on Home Assistant's website hasn't been updated in a while - it's amazing to see how much has changed.
I spent the weekend getting IPv6 set back up on my network, i disabled it for some reason
https://media.tenor.com/images/f93e0f635077490bb8e29f3a0a48aba3/tenor.gif
@hushed basalt Hii Dr. Nick!
apparently windows did an update over this past weekend
and it's now got something like spotlight
I don't speak of vista in polite company
@wet pilot to invoke this you hit alt and spacebar
and it pops up in the middle of the screen, exactly like spotlight
I only noticed it because I use a program called Launchy and that's normally its hotkey invocation
and Windows stomped it
Yay, I worked out how to get a device to request a static IPv6 suffix, rather than using DHCPv6
Which one did you get? The 346P or the older 346B? The P's definitely mountable.
346B1
I'm looking at the specs now and even that one's mountable: https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/346B1C_00/curved-ultrawide-lcd-monitor-with-usb-c
The Philips B line 34" curved UltraWide display gives wrap-around view of your work. All-in-one USB-C and ergonomic stand design make for optimal working conditions. Eye comfort features with TUV certified to reduce eye fatigue.
Other convenience
Kensington lock
VESA mount (100 x 100 mm)
Judging by the photos on that page, the mechanism to attach/detach the stand is even the same.
The photos of the rear of the monitor shows a square(ish) panel. That panel should have a little thumb thing you can push up away from the bottom of the square, and the bottom edge should then be free to come away. Lastly, lift the screen off the top of the square.
it doesn't line up with the VESA mount I've got
Hmm. Bad mount? ๐
I've had one in the past that was too chunky for the space allowed on the monitor.
it's taller than the little stand my laptop sits on
so there's no way to say "for this input, use this KVM setting?
You mean like binding display inputs to peripheral inputs?
I always have to switch both the input and the kvm when I want to switch?
I'll see if I can remember the steps. I only change the input source.
the USB-C with my laptop is a no-go
USB Settings > KVM > Auto
so I'm having to use the USB-c to A adapter and a DisplayPort cable
Then changing the source will also change the KVM.
Yeah, I'm using the same setup from my PC, then the USB-C for the MBP.
Apple ๐
the USB-C for my laptop doesn't pick up the display
Odd. Drivers?
Apple ๐
They're good for some stuff. Most dev teams at my place get them because they're 'basically Linux' without needing to know Linux.
looks like the "auto" is only supported if you're using USB-c
Carbon fiber monopod and Tripod with ball head is on sale now. @last dirge check out slickdeals
Iโve always wanted to get a monopod, got one now.
Not the best or top of the line quality for sure. The best ones would cost you upwards of $500
I am not a full time photographer, and that should be better than the aluminum tripod I have.
I want to get a super compact one
the aluminum one I've got is decent enough for non-travel
The lenses I have wonโt work with the super compact one. I got 70-200 f2.8L II usm. That glass is heavy
Basically the camera hangs over the lens. The lens is usually mounted on tri/monopod
anyone using HA with Ecobee thermostat and Flair AC vents? I am considering them for my 2 story home.
smart vents are generally considered to be a "bad thing"
they can cause back pressure issues in the system which isn't great for the blower and or compressor
unless you have a variable speed compressor + blower, single zone HVAC systems are tuned to handle the whole place. Closing things off causes pressure issues. You can already notice this by closing a door to a room and feeling the air rushing underneath
so I have looked into all the negative so far which is partialy the reason I am looking at flair, the system works with Ecobee and has a build in safety that never allows more than 1/3 of all your vents to be closed ever. Given that my home has 12 vents 4 which are downstairs on the the first floor, my thought was to gain the ability to close the downstairs ones once everyone is in bed enabling the upstairs to cool more efficiently .
probably better to look into a smart damper instead
incredibly expensive based on the quotes I have received so far.
that was my first option, it is now my last resort.
๐
@deft pewter other than the USB-C problem, this monitor's great
Glad you like it
It's hard to find one that does so much and gets it all right. For me, it's pretty much perfect.
@last dirge https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1414599-REG 3.2 lb just the lens.
that lens seems cheap
why is fuji stuff so expensive?
why is fuji stuff so expensive?
@last dirge because Fuji
because made in Japan
started messing with long exposure stuff last night
stood there and held the shutter in for 3 minutes
gotta get a remote trigger
Oh god looking through logs is going to be hell
Issue was fixed here
404 not found deleted
gotta get a remote trigger
@last dirge I have a remote trigger ๐ and got two tripods now
started messing with long exposure stuff last night
@last dirge too much light pollution on my island, but when I go to my mom's house the nearest neighbor is 1.5miles away and no lights ๐
Remote triggers are cheap
Fujitsu is more expensive because of teleconverter and uv filter kit included.
UV filter is like $20 max
I need to get one of those teleconverter. It cuts down light several stops, my f2.8 will probably be like f4.5
The polarized lens is a bit more expensive for me. Spent about $150+ on it
Your hair looks like a chocobo.
i'm glad that transferring the /data/ partition to an SSD isn't that difficult
everything feels snappier on my pi 4 now
Heh. On my setup /data/ is the only thing thatโs not on SSD.
@silent canyon get splits
Split systems have a shitload of advantages over ducted/central systems
@last dirge all filters are not created equal
I think the most expensive clear filter we had was aroumd the the $2k mark
the lens is already UV coated
so having an extra UV filter on it is just for crash protection
Yes but making clear glass that doesn't affect the image is seriously hard and expensive
using a lens hood is good crash protection for a lens + it actually improves the image ๐
I would recommend a clear filter of some sort
It can save you from an expensive front element repair
But I wouldn't get an expensive lens and make it mediocre with a crappy filter
I'd look for something with anti-reflection coating as well
do you guys not use lens hoods?
any part of the lens shouldn't be the first thing to impact something else (in my humble opinion). A piece of plastic is way cheaper, and it cuts down on glare
depends on what you're shooting and where your lighting is
I see a lot of happy snappers walking around with the lens hood reversed all the time. worst of all options
my 35mm prime lens has a Hoya UV filter on it, 10-24 has a Chairo on it
prime lens came with a hood but I haven't shot anything where I've needed it yet
big lens came with a tulip hood, used it last night to try long exposure stuff to help block some pollution
the one on the prime lens kinda looks like a chisel-tip sharpie
there's math behind the weird-looking ones. the cheap-o ones just give you a plastic cylinder
but it goes on over a filter, so that's cool
that's a weird one
yeah
I've never seen a square-ish one
crop sensor
but I guess it makes sense if it's targeting the sensor
Lens hood won't help you when you drop a 70-200mm in the bag
A clear filter can
Plus you still need to clean the lens and a clear will give you a sacrificial layer to clean
Rather than a $500+ element
Plus makes it a little bit harder for dust to get inside your lens which is the worst of all
Pro tip also. Use Pancro lens cleaner
Nothing else comes close
Buy it now and throw out whatever fluid you've been using before
Kimwipes are also good for tissues as well. Very cheap and easy to use.
Hi all, ๐๐ป brand new to Home Assistant. Really loving it so far and excited at the possibilities of what I can make it do!
I think I'm about done waiting on ha core rebuild
time to reflash
this is taking longer than it takes to reinstall

the google machine doesn't know what that's from either
do French people get the itis during lunch?
@last dirge cough ethnic fatigue cough
It had Genvieve Bujold and was probably before 1986
so it's a post-lunch meeting
@dawn pewter you french canadian?
aka Anne Boleyn
I'm not. I'm from Oklahoma.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOklahoma
all of her stuff on imdb looks french
You know that she originally played Katheryn Janeway, right?
Katherine... whatever.
I haven't lived in Oklahoma since high school. A very long time ago.
Kate Mulgrew played Katheryn Janeway, she only filmed for 2 days LOL
bunch of old heads in here
i'm 2 months off of 30
I just turned 50 last month and I'm not happy about it.
Filmed / played.... She originated the role before she quit.
apparently in the opening episode there is still a shot of the original actor for Janeway
Genvieve is a beautiful woman and a great actress. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend Dead Ringers with Jeremy Irons.
Warning: It's David Cronemberg, so be ready for lots of body horror.
Did someone say body horror? Check out Tusk ๐

Well first real time with javascript frameworks in general
I'm liking it so far

We were hoping to book a big trip this year and we're so glad we delayed picking somewhere. It can be so hard to get refunds, so you can almost see why some people still go ahead with it.
The only trip we had to cancel was a week in London to see some exhibits. Fortunately, that was when the UK government explicitly said no-one was to visit London... refunds were easy ๐
yeah, one of the times the country we were going to shut down
