Btw @junior forge any chance if someone could change the language of the metadata for this video https://youtu.be/tc17q1Zn0Xs
Home Assistant is proud to present the State of the Union 2019. We've discussed all things Home Assistant: the platform, our goals, our achievements and a sneak peek at what we have planned for the home automation ecosystem.
It will took place on November 13, 2019 in Amsterda...
I believe the metadata is dutch so the captions aren't autogenerating properly
@rare condor thanks for the tip. They are super cheap though :'(
They're like half the price
@hushed basalt afk for a sec but will check it
No probs
I have a fair bit of experience with delicate cables so I did take a lot of care installing
@hushed basalt Checked, the meta data settings are correct
set to English (US) and marked as never aired on US television
set to English (US) and marked as never aired on US television
Shame they didn't air it on CNN, SoU is very important news!
Pardon my ignorance, but how easy is it for me to install Debian onto a Pi? I've installed it on x86 machines and found it painless. But the Pi is perhaps a different animal?
Debian, not Raspbian
Raspbian is debian with Raspi specific firmware and tools
If you want pure debian: https://raspi.debian.net/
I'm aware of this. However, according to Frenck "It isnβt Debian" ... and as I'm considering the switch for Home Assistant, I'm thinking I take his word for it π
Oh I did not know about that site!
Well it isn't Debian, but its based on Debian (now called Raspberry Pi OS)
I run the supervised HA ... which isnt supported for piOS
Ok this is not really suited for #the-water-cooler but why not grab an image from the official installation page: https://www.home-assistant.io/hassio/installation/
Isnt Hassio the image which includes the Home Assistant OS too?
I'm still confused at the new names, so I might be wrong.
I want access to the host operating system, which is why I picked 'supervised' over hassio
@molten osprey continue discussion in #330944238910963714
Such a silly language should never be the default π
Shots fired
Knowing Google/Youtube it'll be 2035 before they fix it
Incidentally too, not intentionally
@hushed basalt LOL, well done YouTube... thanks π
@hushed basalt I have had that issue since late 2018
I don't understand Google, they have obvious crippling bugs that seem trivial to fix in the scheme of their Engineering talents and they like nah, shinny toy!
Its like Google takes the most trivial widespread bugs and marks them wont fix
My uneducated guess is that their teams are incentivised for features not support
More features, new products launched quick = bonuses
Fixing what you own = no bonus
@rare condor
Yeah its werid though as some software is well maintained
Like parts of Android Auto are updated all the time
Other parts which literally break the use of it for 50% of entire userbase are fixed 3-4monthes later
ive got a question about floorplan what channel is best to ask it in?
#frontend-archived maybe? Or #general-archived?
I wanted to install a 2m Pergola in my backyard, but council wants 17,000$ for approval π¦
I find it weird in Australia its illegal to put up a small structure like that in your backyard :\
Howzit guys!! Phil here from South Africa!! New to this whole HA thing, but I'm getting there..
Welcome
Was running a cloud based smart home for the last two years, got my hands on a raspberry pi, home assistant and tasmota two weeks ago, and it changed my life.. wondering why I didn't do this sooner.. lol.
Nice π
Had to learn a whole lot in a very short space of time..
Yeah its a very big space
Somebody here wouldn't perhaps have a link on how to overclock a pi through HA? is it even possible?
there's no overclocking the pi through HA. The system uses Ondemand governor setting. best to ask in #330990055533576204
perfect, thank you.
I fixed my arduino temp thing, it was just me being silly with state changes
Anyone using both Google home mini gen 1 and 2 ?
Nice. how is audio dynamic range between 1 and 2?
I think 2 is a bit wider
1 sounds a bit narrower but it might be the way it is mounted on the wall
I have that one in the bedroom since we don't really listen to music in there and then the rest of the place has a home group
Gen 1 sounds surprisingly good, but I have no google devices to compare it to. No bass at all though
the nest mini isn't a whole lot different
oddly they switched to barrel plugs instead of usb-c
Got Spotify?
When you get a chance can you test this track https://open.spotify.com/track/7eI6YlaSjulVbgeF9HTCO2?si=supmTXLBTpqfEhEKc5DFEg between 1 & 2 and let me know your thoughts.
I got the impression you were latino and everything you link is japanese
Idk if that is japanese, lmao
it might have to be tomorrow
No hurry
girlfriend is in the bedroom relaxing
I got my wyze sensors
I have 2 extra door sensors and a motion sensor I need to think of uses for
@orchid rose they do sound good and agree with bass. Nothing whatsoever. I have paired 12" sub for every 3 or 4 minis. Sounds darn amazing. Wondering whether dynamic range is much better on gen 2 and if it's worth upgrading.
paired it with chromecast audio or something?
Yep.
that's pretty neat
you can group chromecast audio devices
i have 4 minis paired with 2.1 chromecast audio
I know, I've paird a few. Just never thought of using it with subs
well I only have one subwoofer so it won't really work for me, but still pretty neat
might be tricky with a balance tho
should be doable, but you'll probably miss something in the 100-200Hz range. I don't think the mini goes even that low properly
somehow I switched a cou0ple of sensors around
@orchid rose low end fix π
good fix
I forgot they made chromecast audios
klipsch sub might be a bit overkill to pair with google home, but I'm sure it works π
Better than sonos, Bose or any of that stuff.
They did but still support with updates.
Yeah but hard to find one now?
I always grab them if I find them under $50. Some are selling at $200
$200 wth
lol, I paid like 20β¬ for mine a couple of years ago π
12 minis and 3 subs, match made in heaven for background music.
dirt bass
Although at 70% or higher, dynamic range just breaks down on gen 1
A week and a half more of darksky before apple takes it away from me forever π¦
Lol. Already switched to weatherbit pretty happy with it.
Far more accurate than DS for where I live
I use the website to check the weather and their android app
I don't care about API stuff, lol
the android app is going to be missed heavily
and it worked with my girlfriend's watch very nicely π¦
API is a bit easier to replace for my usage
I need windspeed data the rest don't care about.
Sadly that's the only thing I don't have, a WX station. Don't want to DIY anymore.
birthday/christmas present?
surely someone has a hard time buying presents for you
my gf hates that I amazon everything with 3 seconds because it makes it hard for presents but she got me a ton of useful things this year, haha
lucky
Wife gave up long time ago.
she got me a hand warmer which is super nice for me
my wife gifts me expensive olive oil
beef jerky, a bunch of mexican candy, lol
and tabasco sauce
she got me a 12 year bottle of whiskey too
and an engraved glass with "BuSheeZy" on it, haha
Hey food / cooking gifts are awesome
oh, she made me eclairs too
i got a mug with my baby pic on it
your baby pic or a pic of your baby?
me as a baby
that seems odd, lol
I don't even have pics of me as a kid
I probably have x-rays at some hospital somewhere from all the bones I broke as a kid
π
Some chocolates for my birthday and I am on top of the world.
haha, this is the first time out of like 10 years she has gone wild on my bday
https://share.busheezy.dev/kinrVh/c premium C from a JS dev
lolllll
That's pretty cool.
yeah, it's a drawing even
@night zodiac let me know your thoughts when you get a chance to test it. Breakfast over. Back to work.
yeah, I am not going to bother her today. if she steps out, I'll try to remember to blast billy jean
where is the best place to ask a regex question?
it's for the imap_email_content
trying to remove new lines that are appearing in my output
I have definitely copy/pasted some regex off of stackexchange for that 50 times
Hello, {{user}}
{{ state_attr('sensor.xxxx_email', 'body') |regex_replace(find='=', replace='', ignorecase=False)}}
oh, #templates-archived like tom said
ok
I think he left immediately after I answered him, lol
Engage house in tank mode?
Sounds like a viable home automation... If tornado alarm, close windows, shut the metal covers over them, close the doors, etc
Stay safe Bush
I like how those trash containers are just chilling by the road... "Today we are going to take flying lessons, and divebomb our owners' homes!"
I think we're good
@wintry crater looks like straight from The Shining. Or is it just me? π
What stuff do you enjoy?
haha, @turbid stirrup I moved my trash containers before the storm
those are neighbors
I just wired together some dumb shit for a 7 segment display
of course you can't see the 7 segment in that pic
but you can see the stuff needed for it
We just finished snowpiercer
I've watched ozarks, narcos, avatar TLA, lol
Lots of different stuff
Hopefully this spot works well,
Hate having unnecessary things on the desk
@hushed basalt , Kingdom.
The korean one?
We finished Dark too that was good
Freud was so so
I think Netflix is winning television atm though. Funny how so many people thought Disney+ would be the end of them
Warrior Nun was ok. Cursed isnβt too bad. Did you watch the Old Guard?
Badtelcotech, if you don't mind a bit older...
Better Call Saul
Black Mirror
Boardwalk Empire
Breaking Bad
Deadwood
Fargo
Homeland
Mad Men
Mindhunter
Mr Robot
Narcos (including Mexico)
Parks&Rec
The Crown
The Deuce
Made it 30 minutes into Warrior Nun. Couldn't do it...
+1 for Old Guard, it's basically Warrior Nun in 2 hours with a better cast and plot.
after importing all my remotes into home assistant, it's definitely time to binge watch
what would you guys say is the lowest-power sbc that could still technically run hassos (i.e nothing more complicated than a couple sensors or something)
pi zero w?
Zero w is out of production... Was looking to run a LAMP stack on one as extra layer between Hass and the internet, handling the port forwarding
& locked the hell down
@turbid stirrup tried traefik for that?
@turbid stirrup I wouldn't recommend doing something like that
You'll make things a lot more fragile, a lot less performant, a lot more complicated and therefore more likely in the real world to be compromised
I'd use traefik or nginx on your server as a reverse proxy, then use a firewall like opnsense or something to handle security/intrusion detection
I need to watch Old Guard,
Warrior Nun looked awful
So does Cursed or whatever that king arthur/merlin one is called
Idk if Iβm allowed to post deals, but seems like a good deal.
Umbrella academy season 2 comes out end of this month
Looking forward to The Boys S02 in September
I think Netflix is winning television atm though. Funny how so many people thought Disney+ would be the end of them
Indeed, netflix shows (at least 8/10 rating) https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=tv_series,tv_miniseries&companies=co0144901&release_date=2018-01-01,&user_rating=8.0,&num_votes=5000,&production_status=released&sort=release_date,desc and disney+: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=tv_series,tv_miniseries&companies=co0721120&release_date=2018-01-01,&user_rating=8.0,&num_votes=5000,&production_status=released&sort=release_date,desc
IMDb's advanced search allows you to run extremely powerful queries over all people and titles in the database. Find exactly what you're looking for!
Doom Patrol in HBO Max is pretty good.
Oh boy am I fired up
Does anyone have the unifi ap pro?
How in the world are you supposed to disconnect it from the wall mount??? What was this company thinking?!?!?
but like, why wouldn't they include a tool for that??
Things needing a pin or some such is pretty common in the IT space? Like a reset hole or some such
Oooh maybe a lock pick would work
This is why I keep a paperclip in my pocket always
comes in handy way more often than you'd think
I've never played with the ap pro in particular, just a few ac lites, but perhaps a sim eject tool? Not sure how long you need
Oh, I see, yeah, a small flathead is probably your best bet there
Getting there.. not sure where I'm going yet, but
Zero W is not out of production...
I just frankenstieined a new pc for my lady out of spare parts. Lmaoo
Only thing new was the case
Anyone got an automatic pet feeder that doesn't rely on internet connectivity?
A responsible human?
human relies on internet a lot
Decided to dump mergerfs and just go full zfs for my file server
Hard drives are cheaper than the hassle of maintaining zfs, mergerfs and snapraid
I have 14TB of usable atm, and if I buy another pair of 8TBs I can make that ~21TB which is more than I'd ever need in the foreseeable future
NICE!
Are you running raidz2 @rare condor
Raidz1 living on the edge π
Has anyone got to that stage where you don't respond to a message, but so much time passes its rude to respond. I'm really bad at procrastinating on this.
i was doing some raidz but not these kind of raidz
This kind?
I've decided to go striped mirror
this kind https://i.redd.it/22kskrmye5521.jpg
For flexibility and rapid fast resilvering
So I have 2 x 2 x 4TB and 1 x 2 x 8TB.
mirror-1
4TB
4TB
mirror-2
4TB
4TB
mirror-3
8TB
8TB
may i ask what you have that is so invaluable to lose?
porn obviously
obviously
I just use restic to backup to many different locations the most important data
Having it all in one basket is not nice
Even if 10 mirrored raid
For our backup at work I've used two RAID 6 in different location on different electrical grids
Only about 15% of the pool is important
The rest is transient linuxisos etc
Raids aren't just about resiliency though, it's also about availability
As well as making a painful manual recovery process less likely
Recovery is a pain. You don't want to do it unless you have no choice
That goes quadruple for online backups
I like your setup. I was going to add another 8tb drive eventually and use that in a mirrored vdev
I started to move a lot of my Google Drive stuff i.e. work stuff onto ZFS after 4 years of success. So now its become essential it works
My array is storage for all my kubernetes and docker services
Almost everything shuts down without data
I have a network drive that has some media on it, few pictures etc but nothing on it is irreplaceable or isn't already stored on a cd somewhere
when i was younger I always thought I needed to keep a bunch of crap but as I got older I realized.. it was just crap lol
I'm not even a padawan level datahoarder
Hello there, i'm new with home assistant and i've zero knowledge about coding =.= . I followed the instruction on the main page and installed HA in a raspberry pi3 b+. Used samba share to access to the config folder and configuration.yaml file. Everything seem to be okay until i had to deal with some problems about components and intergrations . Looking over community (github etc...) to found out that i've to change somethings with components folders. However, i just be able to access these folder (picture below) while they are talking about some folder relate to the log file like "/usr/src/homeassistant/homeassistant/components/". Is there any specific document or instruction about getting access to these folder? Or i have to learn a little bit about coding to continue with HA?
What kind of problems are you having with components? I wouldn't recommend messing around with the python code for components if you don't know anything about coding...
eh i have 2 problems with connecting broadlink_mp1 and xiaomi gateway to HA. They have instruction on github about coping some files to those components folders. Because my config folder doesn't have that so i created manually and nothing changed so i think the problem should be on those folders :(. For more information, i'm trying to fix this one π¦ https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/37306
hi, @celest thorn I am very new too but just had to do this for tuya_custom.
You need to create a folder called custom_components in the config folder that holds your configuration.yaml file and inside that you drop the github folder and yes you use samba to get to your config files which you seem to have done
yep and the prob is i already done that but nothing change π¦
Hi, I'm trying to make a climate toggle switch and I'm tring to make a template switch. This is where I am at:
- platform: template
switches:
aerconditionat_on_off:
value_template: "{{ is_state('climate.mideaac', 'off') }}"
turn_on:
- service: climate.turn_on
entity_id: climate.mideaac
turn_off:
- service: climate.turn_off
entity_id: climate.mideaac
The thing is that when I turn it on, after 3 seconds it goes back to off
@celest thorn Did you update the configuration.yaml file afterwards?
@rare condor do you think using 24v DC window and curtain motors from china is a good way around compliance
So 24vdc motors with australian power supplies
Do u mean the old code for xiaomi gateway? yep i tried everything, updated the file with the old code, valid result when checking on HA. But nothing change after restarting. My recent process: Installing the "gateway" with code in yaml file (didn't work) - searching online and found out new version no longer support adding with code - delete the code and install through integrations discovered on HA ( 3 days ago and it worked like a charm) - suddenly when unavailable this morning, trying to restart both the pi and the gateway (didn't work) - Reinstall the device on mi home app and delete all the entities on HA - installed integration on HA again and got this error - spending few hours searching solution online then came here with desperation π¦
@hushed basalt sort of, they wouldn't have RCM approval buts it's exactly what I did
24v kit is super easy to work with as it's standard
@celest thorn sorry I am in the same boat close to ten hours just to get everything set up and just keep hitting roadblock after roadblock
@heavy plinth yeah playing with this field is horrible when something went wrong =.= . i start to think about signing some basic (and advance if needed) coding courses to understand what the f**k is going on here
@celest thorn I feeling you. Every help thread or comment just confuses me more lol
wish the hue hub was local pushing
Congratulations @light trout π
Thanks! π π
π congrats!!
Things just got interesting...
We'll finally have someone on the inside to expose all the nasty corruption inside big Nabu that I've been hearing about π π΅οΈ
lol
@shy comet did you finish your project with ledfx?
@tidal bronze nope havnet had a chance
lol
a service pack? do you mean a point release?
π
EA Games...gross
lol so far theres a fix for discord notifications
they changed their api over night apparently
lol
probably the same way they push API changes
i jjust applied the fix manually for now...i normally update on fridays depending on whats pending for the next point release lol
@tidal bronze you want the nests
@night zodiac hows the switch?
She has played it every day. I ordered a Lite so maybe I can get more zelda time in.
hahah
I haven't played in a couple of days
im really impressed with it
@night zodiac so nest better?
i didnt think i would like it as much as i do
yeah, enough to where I'd buy them if you are worried about audio
I think it keeps up better in the higher volumes
restart Start a new run, after stopping the previous run.
very useful now for "snooze" type actionable notifications
Thank you for the feedback. Will convert them @night zodiac
maybe try 1 at first to see if you agree, haha
Good point π Getting a sweet deal through a distributor so not too worried π
hmm switch lite is interesting but not sure if its worth it.....you can only do handheld....for $100 more you get normal siwtch which can go on the tv...it alos comes with the dock...the dock itself is $100 if you were to buy it outright so you actually save money with the normal console
yeah, it is for her
we only have/use one tv
it's just for her to use in bed while I am using the main one
switch lite was only $200ish
ah that makes sense
we got 5 tvs here so plenty of space to play lol
my wifes addicted to lego harry potter right now lol
@shy comet I thought I was bad, 5 TV's π
We have another one being unused. I should probably throw it away
old-ass 720p tv
I ordered a phone stand last night, lol. we use my phone to watch shows while eating at the table
@tidal bronze well 6 lol....2 outside but they mirror each other normally....1 in den, 1 in kitchen, 1 in bedroom and 1 in my sons room
Nice.
yea im not sure im gonna change my automations just yet
Debating between a Samsung Terrace and Sunbrite.
ill need to see how they run in the new default and adjust from there
oh dude we just put up a normal 1080p 32" out there
i have some legacy templates that i wont touch cause i really forgot what they do
got a amazon outdoor cover thats been doing great for them
IR does not like sunlight though π
I have a rear projection for outdoor. Time to say bye to projection era.
oh wow
i kinda want a projector for outside lol
my neighbors got a sound system out there so we have a lil competition lol
it wasnt until we put up our TVs did they set their shit up lol
Outstanding. I love those battles
Fortunately I win all the time and now we are buddies. If I am playing everyone waits.
Last thing they want is to get me started.
Burial sub dude. Rock that place!
How LOW do you want to go ? @shy comet π
hahaha
12" burial is all out but 10" would do as well.
"Keeping up with the jones'" battle. 1 sign you are definitely at Dad age
before you know it, it will be the same with christmas decor and lawn health
then the next milestone will be the "GET OFF MY LAWN YOU KIDS!"
Much love for the automations/scripts enhancements!
π₯° someone checked the contents on damages I believe firmly
haha, I found the one they opened, the are just sensors
they
What a waste of plastic. They all have hard plastic shells inside of these clsmshells
what sensors are they? they look like usb sticks
that's a lot of plant sensors...
i never had great luck with those. dropped a lot and their readings didn't really help me much keeping things alive π
cheap and probably unreliable sensors I got for fun
i still need to see about adding plantlink to ZHA....no idea where to start on that lol
our plants will be alive with or without them, haha
well the problem was that I trusted the sensor
so watered them too much in the end
π€·ββοΈ
everything for weed
Time for some company to make Zigbee versions of those
Snake Plant successfully added.
17 more plants to go
I'll do this later
well let me see what one looks like in a glance view real quickly
@junior forge plantlink did but no longer sell them
they take the very rare AAAA battery
lol, of course it isn't working. fun
Does anyone use a bunch of camera feeds in HA?
define a bunch
idk like 12
yea im somewhere around that number LOL
I've been trying to add some but once i pass 8 or so HA just bogs down and crashes hard
why do they use AAAA, it's so rare but 1.5V
Maybe a dumb question but why do updates made to the HA ios app get posted in announcements and android doesn't?
idk if i'm doing something wrong or what.
machines got plenty of resources so it shouldn't be that. I'm kind of scratching my head atm
How are you adding them?
main or substream?
main
and it's pulling the feeds from blue iris
however if I use a blue iris group and throw it in an iframe it works perfectly fine
maybe it can't handle that many individual streams? idk...
because i noticed my network usage jumps off the charts too
i have a 10gig network so it's undercapacity but it jumps pretty high
oh your using picture entity wth live stream?
I think I am around 14 sub streams (ffmpeg) , direct from camera an 16 local file cameras on the camera tab. Takes a bit to render the page but works fine
yea im around that too but i personally dont navigate to that tab as much
i rely on my automatoins to tell me when a camera needs attention
Same here lol. Just to test stuff
what if it detects aliens
@shy comet yeah
lol if it doenst look like a person i may never know @night zodiac π¦
with person/dog detection you only need telegram .
@brazen fable try low-res sub streams
man my cats still get detected as people lol
I think i'll just switch to an iframe. It works fine
Did you go frigate @shy comet
And that way it's only pulling one stream I suppose
i did not stll rocking tensorflow
Chicken
lol
@brazen fable try the 640x480 sub streams direct from camera
i saw HA may be updating to tensorflow 2
Can't go back from real time person detection
can't really pull direct from camera
I have them all on their own vlan
blue iris machine is the only thing that crosses vlans
Add Rule to HA
@shy comet shit's next level when person detection is as fast as z-wave motion sensors
Thank goodness for raw config editor
i couldn't even get the GUI on that card to load to remove the entities
yeah maybe i was just asking for too much from HA/BI perhaps. oh well
Thanks anyway this group is probably the most helpful group out there when it comes to projects
In other news I was finally able to cull all but one of my old SSIDs. You never really realize how much shit you have connected to wifi until you have to switch them all lmao
which is why I have had the same wifi password for the last 2/3 routers
lol, it looks like my rack is too far from my plants. I will have to make some things to transmit
My SSID and password were VERY old. The overhaul was waaay over due with how much more important stuff that needs protecting
@brazen fable if you have a rule for BI I don't think it's a crime to add a one way rule to cam vlan. π
and the SSID name I picked 15 years ago lmao
hope it wasn't something too silly to scare your neighbors
It was the classic FBI VAN
When I was doing the transition I have something like 14 SSIDs broadcasting just from my house
I found it rather amusing
Final count will be 5 once I clear out the last one
1 - High Speed stuff with Wifi AX and all the goodies turned on. 5ghz only.
2- General use, no Wifi AX because lots of devices don't play nice with it, but on the same subnet as #1
3- Security VLAN - No internet access ever.
4- Guest Network with gag portal
5- Untrusted devices that occasionally need internet access, usually keep internet off but if I'm away for a while I'll flip it on to use those devices away from the house
@night zodiac UDM Pro?
ah
everything 2.4 here, everything important with cable. never found any benefit of 5, although I live in a city and apartment block
my apartment is small so I can get away with 5 without worrying about drop connections
but I'd probably just add AP's if I dropped
2.4 for slower but distance, 5 for faster but less distance
you measured? how much was the benefit? I tried and didn't see a benefit, I have concrete/masonry walls and in theory the 2.4 should be saturated because of big apartment block
I mean it really doesn't benefit me at all because I don't use that much BW
I just set stuff like that because I know that is what is supposed to be true
2.4 should go through your walls better
"through"
I'm currently running the UDM pro but I'm thinking of building a mega PFSense box that can route massive amounts of data
I just run a few AP's and I never have issues with 5ghz
The speed is great
the only thing I plan on doing is getting an ER-4 and a 24 port lite switch and using SFP for them
I can't wait for 6ghz to hit consumer devices. I'll throw an AP in every room
I am out of ports and would rather have SFP for the connection for now reason
depends what are your walls made of : )
I have concrete/masonry walls
@midnight adder
fuck
I didn't mean to poing you
poing
hell yeah
I just put a switch in every room that has more than a couple devices with SFP+ uplink to the main switch
I have notifications turned off just like everything else in my life, eh, no worries
I'll never run out of ports TBH
I have everything hard wired that I can
If I added all my RJ45 ports together I think I have something like 200
not all used ofc, but 200 total
and my server/main desktop both use SFP+
lol
Shuffling around big files is a lot easier when you have bandwidth lmao
I can use the drives on my server like they're local
that way my main machine only has SSDs
yeah, I had 4 SSD's hooked up but only use 1 so I gave some of the SSD's to my pis, lol
I have 3 SSD's on my main machine. 1 NVMe for OS/Core programs, the other 2 sata
yeah, I just have 2 nvme's now and gave my old sata ones to the pis
wanted to ask how do you access the drives but you both use windows
also dark theme
server has a couple of small SSD's I use as cache drives, as well as the OS SSD
oh, yeah. my NAS has small SSDs for caching
@brazen fable why so many terabytes if it's not a secret? are you a hoarder?
I have a lot of movies
some movies have 2 copies, 4k and 1080p
some of my 4k files are 100gb
So yeah, they eat space
The other 20tb is for security camera storage
Running about 105 ~ 115 clients
I'm able to store A TON of video feeds lmao
I use Aruba 515's for my APs
i have a unifi HD AC wave 2 I use for monitoring and the occasional survey
Same with SHD
UniFi stuff looks so pretty but it can be super buggy sometimes.
Which is probably why I'll just build a PFsense box and sell off my UDM Pro and the AP
2 outdoor units and 4 inside. Never had any issues.
It depends on the product. The UDM pro is really half baked
I mean for the price tag I suppose it's ok
Never liked SGs running ER 6P
And I would get an edgerouter infinity but for half the cost I could build a PFSense box that would out perform it
ER 6P is just fine for my needs at least
Now that things are somewhat returning to normal-ish I'm hoping I can finally get my metroE installed
3gbps up/down
So I need to be able to route that, and I want IPS and some goodies
I'm hoping they fix up the UDM Pro though because it's a good looking box and the interface is slick
The features that do work well, are pretty fantastic too
Unifi is great as long as you know how to fine tune manually and keep away from any of the AI/Auto crap
my 50β¬ tplink router has better coverage (in my case atleast) and I feel more secure than with any of that unify stuff
I used to buy these: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/32884865866.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.53854c4dQdI0SO for controlling analog RGB(W) ledstrips but sadly they moved away from esp chips so they can't be flashed with tasmota anymore... Does someone have recommendations that can be flashed?

tp link with openwrt π
Yeah, no.
iyep
I mean, I understand not everyone has advanced networking needs, but the two products aren't remotely comparable
You're trying to compare a ford escort to a ferrari. The horsepower difference alone between the two devices is massive
well I get the max out of AC from both, tplink was actually faster I think the unifi stuff is for hungdreds of devices, so I don't really get the craze for this unifi stuff
Home router AC performance / throughput is actually better. Unifi is not for that, mainly for handling many clients while keeping everyone happy.
yeah, unifi solved all of my wifi problems pretty quickly
it even tells me if airplanes from the nearby airport blast me with RADAR
With my Aruba 515's I get 2.4 gbps through put
If shit works the way you want, that's all that matters. π
wifi is a bit difficult tu figure out what works best for you, but unifi is really not made for best throughput @ home
Depends on the area you have to cover and number of clients.
My phone caps out at 1.2gbps link.. but that's a limitation of the phone
I wish I can slap a single unit in the middle and call it a day. Lol.
That'd be nice ha
Yep. I wish.
I probably could put an AP smack dab in the middle and get very slow access throughout
but what fun is that?
Give me gigabit wireless everywhere
\o/
a single unit that's what I have for 2 floors π
I don't get why they sell the ac hd pro stuff still with a throughput cap lower than the consumer products
I used to be crazy about max throughput back in the day. Now 250mb with seamless fastroamimg from edge to edge of the property I am a very happy camper.
yeah so do you have a campus at home? no, you want the full throughput at home π
I have both. π€·ββοΈ
And seamless fast roaming thoughout. I assure you, my coverage area and speed are better.
wifi 5 mesh APs were on clearance near me so that's what I went with
π€·ββοΈ
there's enough backhaul for decent speed
Especially since I have 3gbps backhaul on these things. If I threw my wireless load at your TP-link it'd probably light on fire
I'm glad my netgear router died. it's one of the best things to happen to me.
with openwrt and non-native wan-lan speeds for sure... but I'm fine with 1gbps and the full AC speeds for my 40 clients π
Hmmm full ac speed on 40 clients ? π€
Not simultaneous obviously
the iot lot is on 2.4 π
Lol
Small network is small.
Perhaps no universal product for every applicationπ
although most of my IoT stuff isn't even wifi. It's zwave/zigbee lul
The wifi ones are my Alexa's, Google Homes, uh.....
MyQ
Pretty much everything else is wired in or zwave
except a roku stick
if you want throughput on wifi just grab one or two good tri-band APs and call it a day
does unifi have a wifi 6 range yet?
i think so
I just got a shit ton of japanese mayo in the mail per quads suggestion
ooooooooooh the unifi ap-6-lite is for early access users only
@night zodiac thank me later
Early access just requires clicking a button
make a ubiquity account and click early access lol
sounds like a great way to advertise their new products! eyeroll
Anyone have any good recommendations for starting out NAS's? Seems like its mainly Synology/QNAP
This is home Assistant lounge
If you don't build your own NAS it's heresy @steep fractal
Loool
I'd rather buy one than build one
I like the ability of adding virtually unlimited disks
But there's nothing wrong with a qnap or synology
DSM just works and is running with 5 minutes. I love DSM. Are you using truenas?
@tidal bronze I got some of those relays in. going to mess with it
lol, they're loud
2
@rare condor I put Plex in an LXC
Seems to work pretty well. I haven't got around to setting up the hardware acceleration yet but that should be a lot easier than a VM
she's pretty simple with docker as well
devices:
- /dev/dri:/dev/dri
for me is all I had to do
I just spent forever trying to sort a problem wtih an addon only to realize I never started it
Yeah but I don't want to run docker on my hypervisor
@shy comet finally done with ledfx. Pi + USB line in + Chromecast audio. Command line switches to switch ledfx presents via HA π
I wish everything was mqtt
I have a small cheap little one for now
cr23423424234
or whatever
zigbee to mqtt, that is
@tidal bronze wow thats awesome....im not even ready for that yet lol
Mic thing is a mess. CC audio much cleaner.
yea for sure i have a spare one somewhere lol
There you go.
Have you looked at Freenas or Unraid?
yeah, I am on the waiting list for the one with the wild name
Now I have to dig in to E 1.31 to mqtt. It would be badass to get bass beats to regular RGBW down lights straight from ledfx. @shy comet
I wish I could find some time to write something to use the spotify analysis api
@night zodiac in case you were wondering mario kart 8 deluxe π
I've always wanted to be able to automate that
nice dsh, haha
I got my lite in the mail today
nice!
I bought zelda on her account, I should have bought a physical copy :/
I might just rebuy
printing some joycon wheels lol
It already is lol But downlights go on sequence. Would be super to get bass beat color variations. @shy comet
There's always some smart ass out there https://github.com/hhromic/e131-mqtt-bridge
lol
I have to be doing some more dumb stuff
I'm looking to buy an electric curtains motor, any advise , I was thinking of the Zemismart and flashing it with Tasmota, is there any other alternative that work with HA ?
Ordered another 32GB of ram for my homelab cluster
My main node keeps running out :(
I'm not sure if it's the nfs backed volume mounts in docker caching everything to ram and running out
Lots of black boxes involved that I can't get into easily to debug
okay, doorbell and motion sensor automations finally rolling
Prototype hacked light, lol
@hushed basalt Nice are you using a privileged container and sharing the local zfs pool or using NFS to mount Plex Storage?
I'm using a mount in the lxc to the media dataset
Not sure if that makes sense or what I should even be doing
Documentation is a bit poo poo on this
That's fine, (well it's considered bad practice) but its what I do.
The only issue is your Plex Container will be read only unless you set the fs files 'chmod 777' or tick the option privileged container.
I.e. try delete a file from the zfs fs, you'll probably find you can't which doesn't matter for Plex anyway as it's just 'reading' the media.
Random-ass question: Anyone got any experience with electric bicycles? Pretty keen to get one, but want a fairly reliable one.
Yes I owned the Xiaomi Ebike - it was great, love how portable it was.
What are you after feature wise?
Wow Home Assistant has been around a lot longer than I realise: https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2014/12/26/home-control-home-automation-and-the-smart-home/
First comit Sept 17 2013 https://github.com/home-assistant/core/tree/d55e4d53cccc9123d03f45c53441e7cbfc58e515
@rare condor: Looking at more than a portable bike. Was looking at a more heavy duty commuter as I'll be riding 17km across the Gateway bridge (in Brisbane, about 14% incline). Was considering the Kalkhoff brand.
@light trout Congratulations
Ah fair enough don't have experience on that front, I ride a scooter to work when I am not in lockdown.
Home Assistant is a framework I wrote in Python to automate switching the lights on and off based on devices at home and the position of the sun. - lol expanded a little bit more since then
Just a little bit π
i migrated from openhab years ago and hass felt like a toy at first
π
best decision in my life
I initially had python and bash scripts loaded by cron and rc.local on Raspi 1.
Rough times...
rough times indeed
I don't think that would fit
It's too big and too complex, but who knows π€·ββοΈ
well it could be an optional "turn on" feature for people but having it preinstalled and working out of box would be a huge positive thing
even if the preinstall was the most basic core and required additional downloading if users decided to turn the feature on
i'm kind of a perfect example, I literally half equal amounts of everything on my install from addons to hacs additions.. it's split down the middle lol
I can't run that with the os
sure you can
unless something changed in the past few months i'm unaware of
I can run curl commands from file editor or through ssh
or i guess the terminal addon
Yup π
yea but it would be "nicer" if a user didn't have to go that route, which is why hacs needs to be baked in lol
I could turn that script in to a one-off addon, but that feels wierd
my hacs has just been updated all these months so I can't speak of how the install goes now vs then but before people would even screw up a single command line lol
I think you and the rest should really consider baking it in someway, even if a toggle only runs an install script would be more "user friendly"
people obviously get things working in the end regardless and sometimes the journey even helps them but with HA going more UI and more and more people finding it easier to work with, it only makes sense for HAC install to just be as easy, especially since you got all the internal handling of the intergrations etc as a single click as is
just my 2 cents anyways
I agree it would be nice to have HACs as a feature in HASS
Such that it can be enabled directly from a base install, its hard to find a user who doesn't rely on HACs these days.
they are taking their sweet time with this usb boot for the rpi4 lol.. they need to hurry the hell up
beta is working well already
you trying it out?
Anyone here in UK by chance?
jup - to be honest, I screwed up the first try π
I know, I know. I just need a product that's only available in UK, so it's going to require redirection a shipment.
@hearty depot how so?
you have to set the boot options in a format like 0x41 I misunderstood it and and wrote 0x4,0x1
restoring ist just plugging another SD card
I hope they drop release soon cause my poor sd card has certianly been ran through the ringer for awhile now
i'll be like atFrenck! atFrenck! atFrenck! atFrenck!
we don't see much of you @peak cloud but then I can't really speak cause people don't see much of me either lately lol
I've been here and there.
family still playing minecraft on console? till 3am? lol
think you said it was on console
They play 24/7. One on PC and one on console.
lol
isnt Tinkerer home in the UK?
Emoji.
what?
@hearty depot Tinkerer has been inactive the past couple of days.
π¨
what happens
We disabled the use of external emoji on this server, and it upset quite a few people.
he left?
rererere - get them back.jpg
π
atxbyea left on his own account, yes.
oh man that sux
It really does π¦
the emoji's were a little excessive but didn't think anyone would take it that seriously
I prefer emoji shitposting over good people leaving
I see Teddie is still here
Teddie = Tediore?
nights not going to be anywhere near the same without our norwegian punching bag lol
yea teddie = Tediore
now me thinks i should scroll up and see what i been missing since last night lol
Scroll back two days or so.
wtf i spend a few weeks grinding in a game and all hell breaks loose lol
just my two cents on this subject Dev's who want to converse with the general public in this Discord need to be one color while Mods should be another. You look at the list and you think it's already like that but it isn't, you have Dev's who are green while non dev mods who are the same color and to the general public everyone who is either Green or Yellow seems to represent HA in a professional type of matter which is what I assumed cause this issue because some of the Green who are not on the payroll of HA are being looked at as if they were.
i would rather have no colors
and treat everyone equally
if someone has a question, green, blue or white, help him equally
without prioritization
π
Granted mods in general should behave in a professional matter in accordance with the rules and guidelines set forth in this Discord but separating them would help deflect any behavior from directly harming HA in a professional matter
@wintry crater that happens already
Green = mod, Yellow = admin (R.I.P. my admin days...), blue = Jedi
docker changed api yesterday
The Jedi role is earned by contributing to others in a knowledgable manner, day after day, without expectation of receiving anything in return.
need to upgrade py package to 1.3.4
should be a separation between mod and dev in the list. those dev's who don't want to be seen as a dev can hidden under jedi or padawan or like what the server owner does
It would be extremely difficult for us to keep up with every dev that contributed to the project -- there are just too many, and some come and some go.
At this point in time, we do not recognize devs with their own role.
i'm talking what the general public sees
right now if dale went on a rampage people would think the staff of HA went nuts lol
The general public doesn't need to see who the developers are.
If one needs to drill down to development, they are welcome to hop over to the #developers channel.
there is payrol devs and non payroll right?
@forest edge being an employee of Nabu has much much to do with that...
Thing you can or cannot do in terms of permissions in the HA project, is related to what you contribute to as a contributor
To Home Assistant
Iβm on the payrol, hasnβt changed anything for me personally, except I can spend more hours on the project
let me ask this
was the emoji thing because it was displaying a bad reputation towards HA?
Yes
i think channel approach is better, if you have any q to mods, ask there, same with devs. showing that u dev or mod in general have no meaning in my opinion
and that was because of who and thier role that were doing it?
No not role related
If someone specifically should be addressed, they would have been adressed on personal or group level
When I was the server admin, I got so many DMs regarding random stuff, from support to spam to business offers. It was annoying, for sure.
well then I was wrong in what I thought may have happened
π€·ββοΈ it is fairly simple. They where used a lot, while fun it can be overdone at times. This is not welcoming.
We have quite a few new users popping in here, new to HA and often discord as well
I thought them being mods as well played a hand in all of it as well, so my bad in that assumption
Nope
In general, emojis are good and helpful if they are used correctly. This applies to the default set of emoji as well. However, external ones tend to have more explicit expressions or are, often, heavily animated. Some times even not appropriate and uncontrollable for this community.
Especially with unknown emojis, or, misunderstood emojis, the message can end up wrongly with the receiver. The use of those external emojis was pretty high, which is a pretty recent development somehow. Sometimes it even took over the actual context of the chat.
The goal of this server is to help people and build up a friendly atmosphere.
A wall of moving gifs and emojis is not helpful with that in general
I agree but the general pubic saying, using doesn't reflect good or bad on HA itself, it only reflects on that person doing it. not implying the emoji thing was the wrong call or anything just saying some of us can be childish immature children all we want up till the point we get banned lol
It does reflect on HA and other people in terms of how comfortable they feel to be here
Take the Pepe emojis
thats what mods are for
Sorry for my drastic view on this. but isn't it just censored here so as not to get on any random snowflakes feet?
@forest edge really now?
what?
@midnight adder I donβt think so?
mods job are to remove those things that make other people uncomfortable etc right?
was that not correct?
I do not see what that has to do with stopping accepting external emojis because the content and use can be problematic
discord = home assistant for me
don't misunderstand, i agree with the decision. but technically not all external emoji are bad in that way and you said, some have their use. so prior to the decision it was a mods job to remove those bad ones etc, obviously the case in point is alittle more complex lol
I'm a bit confused has Tediore, atxbyea and other users been banned? I had massive respect for those guys they offered great support and helped me π
Thus is becomes a job to monitor and even that is hard as to judge how one might receive things (as said Pepe the frog is a great example)
Which is simply not needed by a config option
no @rare condor
the questionmark is irretating me :D
that's the whole black / white master / slave discussion all over, Political correctness over everything.
I diskike the path were going in society. Everyone is offended and uses this as an argument.
@rare condor atx left on their own, Tediore I havenβt seen? Dunno, no one has been banned
@midnight adder not the same thing
though I agree that there are some explicit gifs out there I also agree with @midnight adder
Oh that's disappointing. π¦
I very much considered this place part of the HASS community.
why did they leave? atx was fun
teddi too
@dusky plank disagreements
oh π¦
@dusky plank atx didnβt say anything in the channels i am in. @scenic radish ? Dunno? He hasnβt left or said anything? Not sure
atx will be back if i have to pester him daily to accomplish it lol
I hope any disagreements can be overcome and we can all work towards making this community as inclusive as we can.
Iβm not sure if it is a disagreement though
That requires at least saying a word I would say π
only they themselves can answer the reasons why
It sounds silly but I lost a really good friend on IRC and afterwards it really hurt, I had spoken to them everyday and to realise they were gone actually felt like losing a friend in real life.
they for sure bullied on the norwegian
Ok so were they removed as Mods?
Nope
I can't see there names in the sidebar? Is that to stop spam
do me a favor and watch this video (recorded 1984) and tell me if something similar is going on right now.
https://youtu.be/Z1EA2ohrt5Q?t=79 I definitely have the feeling, but who am I to judge.
No? @scenic radish is offline, atx left the server without saying anything on his own initiative.
cannot, corporate proxy does not allow yt
Wasn't there like more mods, like I can't see Tinkerer or others as well.
My memory may be serving me wrong though
Now you see me
they can choose not to show or be offline
He's invisible!
Hehehe
ludeeus is flash: confirmed
Ludeeus using daark magic
just have to watch it later, super interesting, and actual history.
maybe thats working for you
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Former+KGB+Agent%2C+Yuri+Bezmenov%2C+Warns+America+About+Socialist+Subversion&t=hk&iar=videos&iax=videos&ia=videos&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZ1EA2ohrt5Q&pn=1
Sorry I don't trust duckduckgo.
yt link is above, tell me why?
i mean google is probably more evel
There are too many π¦'s in the title
Duck duck go isnβt a saint either
who else
I need some cond of serach engine
and selfhosting a serch engine... hard π
Make me wonder, do I dislike π¦?
π¦
@rare condor apperently
ah still yt..
hoped they stream it over their servers
company does tls-interception, I believe they can even read everything i type here
should be plain text then
walking on very uneducated ground here.
its still ssl, but one of the CA's keys is known
SSL Stripping should be possible in a cooperate network
I'm no expert either but even everything transmitted via stunnel gets inspected.
if it's unknown it gets filtered (vpns etc...)
if it's plain HTTP it gets through
I guess rather DPI
deep package inspection
they aware of wich sites you using, but data youre reciving and sending is in an TLS envelope, killing off https would be madness
well I have a root cert installed on my system which makes the proxy trusted... so basically the proxy receives everything plain as I do
@rare condor You obviously don't own a Jeep and live in Texas right now. π¦ is all the crazy in North Texas right now.
own a jeep in north texas what? lol
π yea.. youre fucked π
you could get around this with an ssh proxy afaik
@forest edge Please don't tell me you own a Jeep and live in North Texas...
i don't own a jeep nor live in texas lol
ssh proxy when only 443 and 80 is allowed? nope π
but whats the deal with texas jeep owners?
whats the problem of setting up ssh on 443 or 80?
I had one running on 53udp
perfect for hotelwifis (you dont screw around with dns in a firewall, otherwise youre busy all year )
everything goes through the proxy, the proxy only allows http/s
So there's a trend going around here that is called "ducking." It's where people get a bunch of rubber ducks, write their Jeep name and/or location on them, along with a kind compliment, and go and stick them on other Jeeps.
It's also been confirmed to have spread to Colorado and Oklahoma. So be careful if you're a Jeep owner! You might get ducked!
It started about 2-3 weeks ago.
I didn't even mean to send a screenshot of a duck I left, but that was one of my ducks! πππππππ
(My Jeep = GREMLIN)
so you ducked her?
Oh, I ducked her hard.
or got ducked
I ducked a dude pretty hard in his garage, too.
It's spreading, like 'rona.
Honestly - the pun opportunities is actually the only reason you do this, right?
jeep people are like cults here, it's something else
I mean. It's a good reason.
Probably the best one I can come up with to leave an anonymous rubber duck on someones car.
@low harness I think the pun opportunities plays a MAJOR role in the activity.
But seriously, it's fun to spread joy and not rona.
you wait, the anti-jeep people will start leaving duck poo on people's jeeps in protest
I only own a usb rubber ducky π¦
I've deployed over 200 ducks in the past week.
Rofl π€£ how is that even a thing?!
@forest edge Jeep is love. Jeep is life. No matter where you live.
Hell, I spent 6 hours ducking yesterday alone! And I was only able to deploy about 80 of my ducks in that time period!
Let me find a video of someone's day who was made...BY ME!
"What exactly is the function of a rubber duck?"
jeep cult and Texans.. as the Banner said in the Avengers, "Their minds are a bag of cats"
When James' roommates offered him storage space in their shared bathroom, they had no idea how passionate he was about rubber ducks.
More CONAN @ http://teamcoco.com/video
Team Coco is the official YouTube channel of late night host Conan O'Brien, CONAN on TBS & TeamCoco.com...
@low harness We collect them as trophies.
James Veitch is hillarious, i've seen that and the others he done
Here's a really funny one following the topic of @low harness
hubby?
isnt that a hotwife thing?
It is.
π
But that is not a topic that can be discussed around here, so please, refrain for any further discussion.
you know those ducks are from china right? || lol ||
like all my esp's or zigbee sensors...
and all of my hardware probably
covid everywhere! run!
So SARS-CoV-2 can survive on rubber for multiple days now? π― That's news to me!
For what it's worth, both sets of ducks arrived the following day after ordering them. So unless they were on the most important flight from China to USA, I didn't get the ducks straight from China. π
I'm still waiting for something to arrive from Sydney
Ordered on the 5th
Literally get stuff from USA faster
maybe the roo's are striking for better working conditions
