mine's got "fuzzy logic"

#

it always comes out perfect

#

even if I add a little too much or leave out some water, it's always perfect

scenic radish
#

Yeah I just have a cheap one lol

thick dragon
#

Anyone use Grafana? Trying to work out why I can only select certain columns (indexed columns?) in the "select" part of the query editor.

last dirge
#

what datastore?

#

influx?

thick dragon
#

MariaDB/MySQL connector.

last dirge
#

if I remember correctly there was something "odd" about grafana's syntax

#

like it doesn't map to ANSI SQL syntax

#

I haven't looked at it in years

thick dragon
#

Weird thing is, it just seems to be the query editor itself. Writing the raw SQL works fine.

#

That's why I feel like it might be restricting selectable columns to the ones that are indexed for some reason.

#

Even if you try and aggregate.

last dirge
#

grafana's apparently been failing silently since I moved to docker

#

so I can't even look at it 🙂

thick dragon
#

Hmm, very strange. Not super necessary as there's plenty of Lovelace cards which can achieve similar. Just wanted to toy around now that I have my new solar system setup.

last dirge
#

what's a kWh cost where you're at?

thick dragon
#

23.1c/kWh (AUD) with my provider

midnight adder
#

@igashu Thank you, I will have a look

thick dragon
#

With 11.5c/kWh FIT. Looks like my base load (fridge + server + NAS + phantom power) is bang on 300W too.

last dirge
#

that's a lot

#

are there any state incentives there?

thick dragon
#

What's a lot? The charge, the FIT, the base load?

tidal bronze

hushed basalt
#

Finally have homeassistant, zigbee2mqtt, traefik etc on the new server

#

only took 3 weeks haha

thick dragon
#

I still need to move NGINX Proxy Manager off HA and onto my network management host. Don't like that access to my other proxies goes away if there's an issue with HA.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah definitely decouple that

thick dragon
#

And need to move my Unifi controller off my NAS onto that host too come to think of it.

hushed basalt
#

I have a main server, which has a main vm which runs docker which runs traefik

#

Then I'm going to set up opnsense as well

thick dragon
#

Have been having some major issues with NPM lately though. Think they introduced a bug in later versions where it wouldn't properly create the config files for each host. Hopefully that's fixed now.

ancient anchor
#

traefik ❤️

thick dragon
#

traefik looks a little overkill for what I need, and a lot harder to understand than NPM.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah it's not simple

#

It's stable enough it's just the documentation is pretty crap

#

Plus they change the names of variables a lot

#

So a variable key could be

loadbalancer
loadBalancer
loadBalancers
#

Depending on where you're configuring it, which is a MASSIVE headache

hushed basalt
#

Gotta love optiplex for tool-less

Put in a new intel NIC with zero tools,

unreal orbit
#

I don't like the idea of a single point of failure for 2 networks

mild tapir
#

^

#

I also like having 2 control interfaces

#

That being said, if you have 2 of them and use one for zwave + one for zigbee and then failover to the other on stick failure, then that may be worthwhile

fiery sorrel
#

👋

hearty depot
#

I dont think that you can have 2 coordinators (at least in the zigbee world )

rare condor
#

But you can run multiple VMs

#

and sync zigbee2mqtt

fiery sorrel
#

won't the wavelengh mess themself up ?

#

i have some issue with zwave beeing on some "very popular" frequency here in europe ...

mild tapir
#

You mean frequency interference?

fiery sorrel
#

yup

mild tapir
#

This depends on power output and local RF clarity

wet pilot
#

huh, that's lame. zigbee is on the "popular" freq in the US and zwave is on its own

fiery sorrel
#

i can't connect my nanoleaf to wifi, so maybe i have some noise issue

mild tapir
#

868.42MHz in EU for Z-Wave
908.42MHz in NA for Z-Wave

2.4GHz globally for Zigbee

fiery sorrel
#

cough and wifi cough

wet pilot

fiery sorrel
#

ha to slow

#

i've bough some of those 10Y zwave stipe for my fridge, i hope they will be more stable than my fibaro door sensor :(

mild tapir
#

This is why I use Z-Wave. I already have my house flooded with 2.4GHz

rare condor
#

I have several AP saturating 2.4ghz, zigbee always stable

fiery sorrel
#

you'r lucky

mild tapir
#

Zigbee typically uses channels 15, 20, and 25 which are untouched by WiFi

fiery sorrel
#

i hate when the device just don't shut off and i have to wait for the next pull

mild tapir
fiery sorrel
#

i alwayse wondered why those where the "recomanded" chanel on wifi ... i need to google it

mild tapir
#

1, 6, 11

wet pilot
#

1/6/11 are recommended for wifi because they don't overlap

mild tapir
#

Do not use any mid channels.

wet pilot
#

2 hits 1 and 6, etc

mild tapir
#

WiFi is designed to work with other WiFi AP's by taking turns.

rare condor
#

so what's the issue. 900mhz networks is saturated with LORA networks, Voice Networks and CSIRO crap, I always found 900mhz and RF 443mhz very unreliable

mild tapir
#

900MHz would be Z-Wave's North American Band

rare condor
#

I am referring to 850mhz to 950mhz to account for Regions

mild tapir
#

Well if that entire area is saturated, forget about Z-Wave. Better hope 2.4GHz is relatively soft and clear

rare condor
#

Yeah I tried Zwave for a while but living near Uni Campus and RF testing centre, has very unique interference

#

Also Zwave is non existent in Aus

Home Assistant is much easier to say and much more descriptive of the purpose

generic is not good for searching

but HA mean High availibility ... Well with the boot time now you could call it that

mild tapir

late gate
#

I wonder how anyone can claim buying a 868,3mhz based smarthome solution is better than zwave/zigbee hubs. I just did some ranting with someone who claims all hubs are crap, and 868,3 is much better

fiery sorrel
#

the capability of 868,3 to just pop in an out of a network is nice, where zwave and zigbee create a mesh that don't like to be broken

#

and to be far i have tone of issue with zwave, mostly based on the complexity of the proto ... something simpler is usealy more reliable

late gate
#

but would you in 2020 go and buy a 2000usd solution based on 868,3mhz?

#

probably locked in to their own brand

fiery sorrel
#

no, because i don't buy solution that cost 2000usd ... i buy modular.
But i could spend that much in 868,3 if i didn't make the mistake to use zwave for my door and motion sensor

late gate
#

I cant say I had any issues with zwave making me want to go back to the basic tech.

fiery sorrel
#

i think there is a world between US zwave and Europe Zwave ...

late gate
#

that I dont know. I use EU zwave

fiery sorrel
#

well ... me to and it's realy bad on my side, like i regularely (multiple time a day) get device stuck in one state because the message was drop and they don't re-brodcast (battery device)

#

and with how sequentialy it behave, i can have up to 10 seconde between my first and last rolling shutter going down

late gate
#

strange. what brand?

fiery sorrel
#

fibaro for the device, and aeotec for the usb key (but i've try the rpiz also)

late gate
#

ah fibaro. well the problem with fibaro is they have a lot of issues fixed in firmware

#

serious issues

#

even fire hazard issues

#

that they refuse to release

fiery sorrel
#

i ... can't update the firmware ... without a fibaro controler

last dirge
#

the RF Frequency differs between the US and the rest of the world for zwave

late gate
#

yeah, if you use a US zwave here you use the GSM network. you will get in trouble

fiery sorrel
#

i realy wish they where an integration for rfxcom ... i could use my chacon in home assistant for thing like mosquito plug and xmas light without having to leave theme for meshing

late gate
#

I use 433mhz for chistmas stuff and rfxcom

fiery sorrel
#

but home assistant it does not support rolling code if i'm not wrong

late gate
#

that I have no idea with. I just use nexa plugs in 433mhz.

fiery sorrel
#

i have one in the mail, i'll try it

G'day bit new here. Seems there are a great many very good youtubers that talk home automation and I've subscribed to quite a few but I was wondering if any people here have found any Australian based ones?

last plaza

Why? They don’t speak English?

#

If you wait a couple of hours, you’ll see a flood of aussies here.

#

I don't actually know how to invite people hahahaha

remote coyote
#

Nothing wrong with the usa/uk based ones just not all stuff in aussie land is available to use like uk and usa certification etc, ah yeah Jonathan. Thanks!

rain swift
#

afaik, if you're in australia, you're not allowed to touch anything AC in the house without 3 engineers present and a permit. 🙂

thick dragon
#

Imagine we also have the lowest rate of incidence of electrical fire and electric shock among developed countries because of it though. Plus, we're on 240v here - so potentially more dangerous than 110v, depending on amps.

#

@remote coyote: If you use Facebook, there's an Aussie & Kiwi automation group with a lot of really clued-in people there. Making their own ESP projects and whatnot.

There's always a silver lining to everything @thick dragon thanks for the info.

#

Thanks @tough igloo 😉

thick dragon

The Blakadder repository for Tasmota also has filtering by country now too, with heaps of people submitting their configs for AU devices.

tough igloo
#

There’s a good community forum thread for Aussies too

remote coyote
#

ooh by electrical standard nice.

thick dragon

And yeah, fair few Aussies here on Discord too, so anything specific holler out and you'll likely get a pretty quick answer 🙂

Random question - what's everyone's baseline power load in Watts? Curious to see where I sit at 270W.

remote coyote

490W here, right now.

1500W when the AC's off and cars are not charging

thick dragon
#

How many fridges/freezers do you have @lunar sundial? That seems exceedingly high.

last dirge
#

I don't have power monitoring yet

lunar sundial
#

1 fridge, 1 freezer, and there's a small little fridge as well

#

but 500W of that is my NAS and ESXi server in my rack 😛

thick dragon
#

Methinks you need a more efficient NAS/ESXi host! My 270W is with the NAS and ESXi host.

lunar sundial
#

they're old, a PE2950 and a Old Supermicro chassis X8SIL system

thick dragon
#

Fair. I've got a Syno DS418 and using an old ex-govt HP desktop (with laptop power supply) as ESXi host.

lunar sundial
#

The PE is dual CPU lol

#

I have an old 12bay system I may eventually turn up to replicate the NAS 😛

thick dragon
#

I couldn't justify an actual rack. Only have an 8-port managed switch that daisy chains to unmanaged switches. Plus I'm retro-fitting the CAT6 in a 2-storey townhouse, which is difficult 😛

lunar sundial
#

I havea 2960G in the rack too

#

i regret not having told the builder to put in conduit for my data runs 😦

#

walls have fire blocks in them, pain in the ass to run new wire/fiber

tidal bronze
#

Around 1400W here as well

thick dragon
#

So I'm using the yr integration to get the predicted cloud cover for some automations for my new solar. Unfortunately you can only get prediction results at a static time period in the future (n hrs). What would be the most elegant way to get average of cloud cover over say, a 4 hour period? Am I really gonna have to set up 4 separate sensor entities then a template sensor to average them?

lunar sundial
#

used to be DarkSky would do what you wanted, but they sold out

tidal bronze
#

What's the use case on the automation side?

#

You can use open weather map and weatherbit as well.

thick dragon
#

Reminders in the morning for highest potential self consumption (provided other conditions have been met, such as washing machine not run for 40+ hours, dishwasher not run for 30+ hours).

tidal bronze
#

Undersized ?

lunar sundial
#

I can run my upstairs AC unit off my panels most of the day 🙂

thick dragon
#

I mean, it reminds me in the morning if it's going to be a sunny day and what chores need doing (based on last run time). Want to split it via morning/afternoon, based on predictions across those periods.

lunar sundial
#

interesting

tidal bronze
#

Got it. Yep interesting. So you are on TOU without Net metering?

thick dragon
#

I don't know what those terms mean 😛

tidal bronze
#

Time of use. 🙂 Not calculated total production Vs Consumption.

thick dragon
#

Ohh, no I have that. But the best value for money is when you can self-consume. I only get 11c/kWh for generation, but costs 24.9c/kWh for usage.

#

So want to predict when it will be best to do the chores based on least-used grid energy.

scenic radish

thick dragon
#

Looks like the met.no API returns a 6-hour forecast in the default API response. Unfortunately the default weather integration appears to use the current conditions, and doesn't expose the forecast - so might need to pull that in via AppDaemon or something.

tidal bronze
#

I used cloud cover sometime ago but was always hit and miss for light control. Went with multiple lux sensors problem solved. You will have to rely on predictions for your use case.

Has anyone here also tried OpenHAB? Recently heard about it, read a bit about people’s experiences with it and apparently HASS and OHAB are very similar, tho OHAB may be a bit easier due to the „click and drag“ block automations you can make.

forest edge
#

I tried it awhile back, was an attempt to find something that actually worked with the type of smart bulbs that I have. I can't speak for any changes made to it in the last 6 months but I had quickly found out it was easier to modify integrations etc with HA than it was with OHAB so I stuck with HA. @inner lava

Especially since our SUV has bugger all boot space (wife's choice not mine)

green inlet
#

Lmao.....that whole rant and you own an SUV?

tidal bronze
#

Wife likes SUVs I have no idea why. Specially for 1 person. Lol.

thick dragon
#

Does anyone know what the last working release of NGINX Proxy Manager was? Been a bug that prevents new SSL certs from being created for 2+ months. Want to move it off my HA install onto my network management VM.

hushed basalt
#

Wifes always win

#

This is known

tidal bronze
#

She can have her SUV not my thing.

hushed basalt
#

Look at all that cargo space. In 5 seat mode. mmm

#

carrying capacity drools

#

vs SUV

tidal bronze
#

Never looked into capacity since we don't have kids. We rarely drive each other's anyway.

hushed basalt
#

We're a one car household

green inlet
#

When my kids were young, my wife promised me that if I bought her a mini van, she would drive it straight off the lot and into a pole. She got a Dodge Durango, which I hated. After that car, she was like, I think I want a mini van. I got the Durango and loved it.

tidal bronze
#

Durango does look nice.

hushed basalt
#

We'll probably get a minivan as a second car

green inlet
#

Still have the Durango. So easy to throw an 8x4 sheet of plywood in or just about anything else. It is now 17 years old, taught all of my kids to drive in it, has 230+ miles and still runs like a champ

hushed basalt
#

Then eventually trade in the SUV to a hatchback

#

No need for 2 big cars

green inlet
#

I want a corvette....not sure why...never liked them when I was younger. I just want one.

tidal bronze
#

Wife's birthday is coming up gotta surprise her. I'm in the market as well for a damn SUV.

green inlet
#

Besides gas mileage, I think SUVs are awesome

tidal bronze
#

I don't get it but she loves it. Says the driving position is way better than a car. 😀

hushed basalt
#

And pedestrians

tidal bronze
#

With COVID pretty good deals and rates.

hushed basalt
#

I just wish car manufacturers cared more about aerodynamics

#

I mean how hard is it to design little things like mini rear spoilers

tidal bronze
#

Never thought about it. She drives maybe 3 or 4 miles a day. I rarely drive at all. Even it's box that'll do. 😆

hushed basalt
#

Makes a huge difference

#

2/3rds of your fuel consumption on the open road is due to drag

tidal bronze
#

Market here is crazy. Went through the roof. Nobody is selling and tons of buyer's. @rain swift

#

@hushed basalt didn't ever think about fuel consumption.

hushed basalt
#

Things in motion want to stay in motion

#

The only reason you can't just drive in a direction, get up to speed and then turn your engine off is because of wind resistance and rolling resistance

tidal bronze
#

@rain swift exactly shit is weird.

hushed basalt
#

There's a reason Prius is so slipperly looking, a lot of their 'fuel saving' features come from being designed aerodynamically not just being a hybrid

#

But style wins over function for consumer markets every time

tidal bronze
#

I totally agree with your aerodynamics but never really thought about it when buying a car. I am all over it with my RC cars though.

#

No thank you. 🤣

hushed basalt
#

Wedges are terrible for aerodynamics

#

Teardrop

tidal bronze
#

Lol

hushed basalt
#

Here you go

tidal bronze
#

People are interesting

#

32 miles of duct tape so you gain 1.7% efficiency

hushed basalt
#

I have no idea what the guy was up to

#

Probably a university student doing his thesis on aerodynamics or something

#

But the difference would have been a lot

#

Or a complete nutjob on the internet

#

🤷‍♂️

green inlet
#

@rain swift , you got to realize that banks just can’t kick you out of your house because you missed one mortgage. Usually 3-6 payments till things start to happen

#

Yes, be patient. I am also hoping to pickup some investment properties.

thick dragon
#

I'm pretty happy with my place. Definitely big enough for what we need, and very comfortable to live in. Getting sparky to run some CAT6 on Monday so should be all good then.

green inlet
#

Australia I am guessing. They can’t even replace switches

bitter zinc
#

If I was installing smart home stuff at a friends house, would you guys reccomend me installing home assistant there? Idk if its meant to be setup then left alone like that

thick dragon
#

@green inlet: Yes, Australia - but we can run our own CAT6. I just own a 2-storey town house and need to run the CAT6 in a conduit down the side of it which I can't do myself.

#

Anything directly connected to AC or DC, you can't touch. Anything else is fine.

green inlet
#

@bitter zinc , only if 1) he gave you access and you are willing to take the time to update/troubleshoot 2) he is happy with things as-is and doesn’t care about future stuff.

hushed basalt
#

You can't run your own cat6

#

Legally

scenic radish
#

What??

hushed basalt
#

Yep

scenic radish
#

Wtf

hushed basalt
#
CPRs promote safety and maintain network integrity through requirements including:

A registered cabler must perform telecommunications, fire, security and data industries cabling.
Cablers must have the right registration for the type of work they are doing: open, restricted or lift registration. For details, see Types of cabling registration.
Work must comply with the Wiring Rules - industry standard AS/CA S009:2013 Installation requirements for customer cabling.
scenic radish
#

Seems excessive

hushed basalt
#

Yep

#

Fortunately I'm a licensed cabler so mhwauhwuaaw

scenic radish
#

I'd be pissed if I couldn't even put in a new light switch

hushed basalt
#

Come at me bro

#

We definitely defintely can't put in new light switches

#

Or change light fixtures like for like

scenic radish
#

Goodness

#

I replaced a bunch of my switches with dimmers, can't imagine paying someone for that

#

But...I also know what I'm doing and know my limits

hushed basalt
#

Yep hence why when I intend to run RPIs around the house it's cheaper to buy POE hats and use POE ports than it is to run a powerpoint there

#

A 2 man team of electricians would probably charge you.. $200/hour?

#

plus 30-50% markup on materials or more

tidal bronze
#

Can you install a patch cord without supervision?

hushed basalt
#

Yes

#

As long as it's preterminated

tidal bronze
#

Phew

hushed basalt
#

Any equipment must also be licensed for Australia

#

So technically that rules out even random rj45 jacks off aliexpress

#

I know I'll be buying cheap keystone jacks off amazon when I do my house though

#

No one is ever going to look at the model number of my jacks

tidal bronze
#

Is this generating revenue + keeping standards or just keeping standards.?

hushed basalt
#

Well the 'reasoning' is

#

Think back to the 80s where 'telecommunications' was purely a telephone

#

People doing crappy wiring could have it accidently connected to 240v

#

Or ground it, or use random dodgey telephones

#

Which would not be nice for the technicians working on the telecoms infrastructure

static schooner
#

RING

hushed basalt
#

But yeah it's nanny state really

static schooner
#

boom

hushed basalt
#

Telephone rings are about 90v AC,

#

current limited but it'll give you a tickle

static schooner
#

I’ve been on the wrong side. It’s great fun

tidal bronze
#

So homeowner has no right to open a wall or do anything of that sort ?

scenic radish
tidal bronze
#

Same cell ID?

peak cloud
#

Clouds, air pollution, cars driving by, multi-pathing, etc.

scenic radish
#

Fair, just seems dramatic

tidal bronze
#

Looking at your signal level you must be on the fringe and switching cells.

peak cloud
#

Yeah, a 30% delta does seem pretty ridiculous.

tidal bronze
#

Pop up engineering mode on your phone and you can double check

scenic radish
#

Probably quad...I have poor signal throughout my condo, probably because it has concrete ceilings, floors, and exterior wall construction

#

And brick veneer outside that lol

peak cloud
#

Can you get a mini cell, or whatever those tiny towers from the carrier are called?

tidal bronze
#

They don't do that anymore right ?

scenic radish
#

Cell extender? Maybe...I think TMobile discontinued them

peak cloud
#

Oh, I have no idea. I have never needed one, just read about them somewhere.

tidal bronze
#

They discontinued before LTE

#

You can also use tasker and get a good idea if you are jumping cells

scenic radish
#

Sitting in my living room, my phone's signal on LTE is -113 dBm lol

tidal bronze
#

Wowza

scenic radish
#

"you just get a l'il LTE"

tidal bronze
#

Still won't downgrade to 4g and it holds?

scenic radish
#

Yeah it stays on LTE, no issues

#

Apparently -113 dBm is two out of four bars

tidal bronze
#

TMO is all about the bottom line that up/down costs money. Lol.

#

Keep Tedi glued to LTE

#

Why not go 5G ?

#

I tested the low band 5G deployment on TMO mind numbing coverage.

scenic radish
#

Don't wanna get covid

tidal bronze
#

LMAO

scenic radish
#

Nah, I'm on an OG Pixel XL, no COVID-5G for me

tidal bronze
#

You will be very happy with 5G even on a ventilator

scenic radish
#

"I'm hanging by a thread, but my cell signal fucking rocks"

#

5G seems interesting, but I thought it has even less range than 4G because of the wavelength?

#

Or does TMobile just have a ton of the spectrum

tidal bronze
#

3 bands. Low mid narrow. Vzw went with narrow band to start. TMO went bottom up.

scenic radish
#

Oh I seeeeeeeeeeee

tidal bronze
#

Ultimately will have all three bands.

scenic radish
#

Sign up for magenta yet?

tidal bronze
#

I like the low band first. I need sustained coverage not 1.7gb down underneath the damn antenna.

scenic radish
#

Get that """"free"""" third SIM card?

tidal bronze
#

Not yet because working on a deal and might get the sim for free.

tidal bronze
#

Lol.

#

You should test a 5g phone at your place.

scenic radish
#

Yeah I'd be interested to see for sure

tidal bronze
#

I ran the test with one plus. Can't wait for the N20

hushed basalt
#

Can you put the modem on a usb extension cable

#

Get it in a better position and orientation

scenic radish
#

Yeah, I've got it on an extension in seemingly the best spot

#

Tbh it just needs a strong enough signal to send out an SMS

#

The dunder mix was my favorite out of the hard candies @clear ferry

#

I like the sour on the inside

clear ferry
#

I'll have to buy you a five kilo pack then @scenic radish

#

@green inlet it looks just fine openeyecry openeyecry

thick dragon
#

Nothing more frustrating than having something new and shiny to play with, but not being able to.

#

Solar sitting on my roof, and can't do squat with it until energy provider upgrades my meter 😦

forest edge
#

I love how these stores are coming out with all kinds of hand sanitizers and masks in bulk now and they price gouge for it even tho the "big scare" aspect of covid is over so nothing is rushing off the shelfs lol

clear ferry
#

USA, not even done with wave 1 of covid yet CatRee

forest edge
#

Norway, 100% infected so just went meh smartpepe

clear ferry
green verge

@hushed basalt just left my torrent with planetes open and it finally downloaded it

That repo in itself is not that cool, but if you go to his profile it now shows the same content

young sigil
#

It it wrong that I mentally pronounce his user name as ball-lube?

clear ferry

I do bah-loo-oob

I do bah-loob

clear ferry

@young sigil you are from down under ish though, you are excused!

forest edge

It it wrong that I mentally pronounce his user name as ball-lube?
@young sigil thou shall be banned forever! 🔨

thick dragon
#

Classic Jemaine!

#

My partner and I just finished second season of What We Do In The Shadows. Such a hilarious show.

forest edge
#

the vampire show?

thick dragon
#

Yeah

forest edge
#

the energy vampire is the best

thick dragon
#

Yeah, easily the best character in there. Not a character who was in the original movie either.

clear ferry
#

Colin Robinson is my spirit animal

@young sigil thanks for that... it's in my head now
