well mine is not perfect but fixing to build in 5 years ..... audio is first on list in design
Take me home, country roads
When I built, I shouldve considered audio more. I had some serious sound proofing done but my main focus was things like RF Shielding, Electrical, and Plumbing.
Balls to the walls on surge protection, RF Isolated rooms, and plumbing taps to water main and sewage in every room just for things like my aquarium.
oh yeah and fiber + cat 6e to every room too
@clear ferry i think you are american by heart and you just cant accept it
I'm a fecking redneck
it is ok .....i understand you have feeling
yee haw
i know

Southern American soul confirmed
we just gotta get him some guns ...i dont think he has any
I am the Norwegian equivalent of a southerner though
Except we are in the North
It's opposite for us
we still love ya

Y my package not @ u @scenic radish
Just tried NodeRed for first time, man I like it. My TCP Relay Controller configuration worked first go with no issues. Even has PLC integrations for Siemens S7, this is my new fav thing.
not sure why I wasn't using it already
Node Red is fun, and good at automations, but I just dont feel comfortable with it. I like the thought of having devices and automations in the same system
I agree. The problem is this distributed IO relay controller relies on direct TCP socket communication and currently HASS TCP Component does not have TCP mechanisms beyond requesting a value at set interval.
The device will post messages randomly thus I would need to write some code to handle this or use NodeRED
Sounds like a classic corner case
Learn this on drums @scenic radish https://open.spotify.com/track/1MzFmVDSl7Vm00f3Hw4Xfx?si=Xx7H6z3YQ4CXDfyUzu5OtQ
Honestly I would be better making a PR and improving HASS's in built component but it can't support every context and this use case is out of scope of what the component is designed for i.e. simple polling of dumb TCP devices.
@hushed basalt @ocean mirage apparently this funky duo I like is from Sydney: https://www.olympicayres.com/
Never heard of them
All the notable bands are out telcos way and they are all the same dudes
Mfw I dropped one of my PCs and it tore to pieces.

@clever mortar that baby is from my city, not a baby now of course.

Yeah damn dude, 5 displays?
Oh you're right
Tinkerer do you know what a s'more is and if so, have you had one before?
I know, and I haven't (yet)
They're really good
things that don't exist in the UK?
I've had yorkshire puddings, will have to get the wife to make them again soon.
Pudding?? That looks like bread lol
Only in way that a cracker looks like bread
yes, I dunno what they call it pudding
Black pudding
Pudding is a type of food that can be either a dessert or a savory (salty or spicy) dish that is part of the main meal
...
In the United Kingdom and some of the Commonwealth countries, the word pudding can be used to describe both sweet and savory dishes.
There's also the less well known white pudding
Haggis is also technically a pudding
Interesting. I've always thought of pudding as only the sweet dessert
I'll try it
S'mores over all anyway
if it's not scottish, it's crap!
Read that like fat bastard from Austin powers

@unreal orbit leftover tendies and fries in the toaster oven at 400 π
Oh there's a leftover biscuit in there too
git you an airfryer, freakin awesome
Ah yes, the new-ish marketing term for "convection oven"
I think my fiancee and I actually registered for a convection toaster oven
@mild tapir that's a ballin monitor
That costs more than my server, networking equipment, and display for my desktop
Twice
call it anything ya want, it's pretty sweet. π
@scenic radish new ovens and microwave comes with that
Yeah, the one I have is a cheap $25 one lol
Works well tho
You end up getting that one "free" line with T-Mobile?
Totally spaced out on that. Must look into it next week. Thank you for reminding. π
Heh, no prob
Testing out these Ikea remotes. Pretty nifty.
Which ones
Ah nice
$8 a piece
Was looking for a Ikea zigbee plug ended up getting these. π€£
I need some sort of a zigbee powered device. π
Heh, I might have to look for some of those. I got two ecosmart Zigbee remote/bulb combo packs from the home depot for $5 each a few months ago
I only wanted the remotes. They're a little janky and because of how button presses are handled on one button, it really is only functionally a 3-button remote instead of 4

@scenic radish They aint cheap monitors but damn are they worth it
@scenic radish that sounds like a nice deal.
@shy comet any way to call a channel on tivimate through HA ?
umm you can send adb commands through a service call...might be able to just send the channel numbers while tivimate is running or launch it and then send the command
I found atx in wild (hint not the cat) https://i.imgur.com/QHLd8X4.mp4 @clear ferry
@shy comet can surely open the app but don't know how to send CH
@shy comet what I am trying to do is get CH audio only to outdoor. π
open door ...turn up audio real loud .... success
Was pretty easy for DirecTV boxes but seems like a challenge on IPTV
I love me some IPTV pukes in multicast and IGMP
@tidal bronze try to send the key events like they describe in this giant list lol. I never used it but maybe it will help https://gist.github.com/Pulimet/5013acf2cd5b28e55036c82c91bd56d8
When I had U-Verse it was a PITA to get U-Verse TV (IPTV based) to work without their damn AIO Router/Modem/Wifi AP/Switch box shit
yea those things were closely connectd lol
Whats shit about is that you dont actually need that AIO Box
All that thing is doing is 802.1X auth to the Fiber ONT
Funny enough, over VLAN 0
If you have AT&T Fiber, its still the same method
yea i have att fiber, gotta use their modem but they at least have ip passthrough so i can use my ubiquiti stuff
Setting the firmware on the AIO back to 1.0.14 or something allowed for an exploit to enable root ssh. You can grab the 802.1X Auth certifications and run wpa_supplicant
Im using Ubi stuff right now. Ive bypassed the router
Its USG-3P to Fiber Terminal instead of IP Passthrough
Ok so someone here mentioned biscoff cookie butter...found some at the store today, it is incredible
@shy comet If you ever wanna do it yourself and bypass the damn thing, let me know. Current docs on how-to are such a mess.
IPv6 works too.
IPv6 is bae
IPv6 is the only option now
You cannot get an IPv4 AS anymore.
Many server hosts are IPv6 only now
I run dual stack for remote access to my stuff
In addition, they are stripping companies and entities of IPv4 slowly
In an effort to speed things up
IPv4 for WAN purposes can die in a fire
Bingo
With things like Prefix Delegation, its so damn easy to setup IPv6
Ill go so far as to say, its easier than IPv4
Cuz fuck NAT
Now if only ISP's would do it correctly π
I kinda cheat and funnel everything through NGINX which just proxy_pass to the LAN IP regardless if connecting over IPv6 or 4 heh
ipv4 for LAN to LAN comms is fine IMO
I do the same thing with Traefik (which is just proxy pass'd nginx with fancy shit for containers)
Lol haven't experienced a big well known dedicated server hoster that is ipv6 only
Some countries don't even use ipv6 yet
Yeah its a mess
Adoption is speeding up rapidly however
If you have T-Mobile, you will find it prioritizes IPv6 and sometimes only allows IPv4 on Roaming and not normal downlink
Depending on country tho
Depending on on contract too
Depending on additionally offers as well
I do find it funny that ISPs hand out /64 blocks like candy lol
T-Mobile is 99.82% Adoption of IPv6 and 100% Deployment across all their networks that can sustain it.
Then we have AT&T...
But we also have enough ipv6 addresses to last beyond when the earth is destroyed
64 only? Got a 48
I have 3 /64
Well, its actually how IPv6 is designed. It was actually built to hand out /64's to consumers on the normal
You handle your client network a 64, per network, thus your provider needs to give you more than a 64
Like my router gets a 64 itself but a 48 for dhcp
ISP prefix is /32, Customer Site prefix is /48, LAN Prefix is /64, the rest is interface ID which is the other half
I also implented ipv6 but stopped at all my docker services, like Adguard, since I would need to redo the docker network π©
ISP:ISP:XXX(/48):(/52)(/56)(/60)(/64):YOUR:INTERFACE:ID:ADDR
Docker and IPv6 is a fucking nightmare
oh wait I forgot
/23 is Registry prefix
@scenic radish The ISP you have is prob using /56 as location assignments
Like assigned to the local router stack
@mild tapir if you love IPTV you'll love the Norwegian isp Telenors implementation, igmpv2 for video and igmpv3 for EPG and other stuff, or the other way around, I gave up getting it through my pfsense years ago π€’
Yes they are
IGMP Proxy is all sorts of fun @clear ferry
Ive spent so much time on it I know more than I want to about it. If you need help and wanna try again, let me know
I have a pfSense box and OPN sense with IGMP dual version proxies setup
Never got it to work at all, so just stretched the wan in a seperate vlan around the house
So far I have it working on pfSense, OPNSense, USG-3G, USG-XG, UDM Pro, UDM, ASR Routers, Juniper Routers, and Arista
Ive been writing loads of documentation
Oh there are Bose Audio sunglasses, why didn't you tell
Mainly for Ubiquiti shit since they cant get their heads out their fucking asses
lets make great hardware at a great price and use our customers as QC. Oh yeah, everything is forever beta, IPv6 was an afterthought, we dont know what IGMP is, and our software engineers are actually hardware engineers so dont expect them to do a good job
And we copyright GPL code and sue people over it then lose millions of dollars in counter-costs
to top it all off, we have no sense of release schedules since our leadership team is engineers and not management team grade employees. Also, if we dont wanna keep supporting it since we just keep jumping to the next best thing every year, we will EOL your shit only 2 years after purchase
grr
Im gonna say it:
If your hardware is great but your software is shit: your product is shit.
Yeah thats all I got for now unless you wanna talk about their SSH exploit they refuse to fix /endrant
π
SSH exploit?
Oh boy ive been fighting them for half a year on it
Im about to release it to the wild tbh
I have an ER-x, should I be concerned
So the first mistake was they rolled their own encryption for Cloud based access
No, Edge equipment is not affected
Ah, good to know
Its also worth noting, ive been keeping close eyes on the situation and so far no one has found it.
However, this was because they are practicing defacto security through obscurity
They are such a small marketshare holder no one has tried some serious attempts at breaking it
Ugh
So they ignore a ton of issues
Enterprises that know whats up refuse to use their stuff and as a result, there is no real large push to get some serious pentesting done
I'm pretty interested actually, mind sending me a DM with a summary?
Yeah, ill write it up and send you a DM
@mild tapir - Self Reminder, Write up SSH Exploit Dossier send to Tediore over DM.
Thanks, whenever you feel up to it of course
Its honestly pretty shitty what Ubiquiti has done over the past few years
Im expecting them to go bankrupt thanks to their latest legal fiasco thats eating them alive
Recently they tried to use COVID as a form of delay to discovery... well now they are just refusing to cooperate. The court is roasting them alive
@scenic radish where did you find the butter ?
Jewel
If you would like to see Cambiums demand for Jury Trial and their basically TL;DR of the situation and subsequent roast through truth, read through this.
@scenic radish what's that ?
Greater TL;DR - Ubiquiti tried to use copyright against Cambium on GPL code and the code was requested in discovery to see if its GPL or not. They are refusing and delaying. They basically stole open source code and privatized it then used it against another company to maintain and gain marketshare. Now its biting them in the ass
Oh sorry lol, it's a grocery store. A little more expensive than average but sometimes I go there since it's smaller than the cheaper grocery store I usually go to @tidal bronze
@mild tapir lovely
Copy. Going to find that today. Sounds too interesting π
Oh and if you havent heard, at one point..... they had millions of dollars stolen from them from a scammer
Wtf
Oh yeah its amazing
They are so god damn bad at this
They dont even use their own equipment internally
its all Juniper
I wonder fucking why
It's not even a spread, this is just a straight-up dessert in itself
https://www.amazon.com/Biscoff-Cookie-Butter-Spread-Crunchy/dp/B0073FSY76/ gonna have to try this
prob gonna try sticking Nutella in it to
and get fat
Overall, despite the appeal of pseudo software defined networking and the price of Ubiquiti equipment, I highly recommend avoiding them at all costs.
If you want an alternative for WiFi with and a controller, Zyxel and Grandstream (Yes the one that makes ip phones)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TQKSQKH < Dank AP with Grandstream Cloud and/or Controller support. 114 USD and competes with Unifi performance (Their highest residential AP)
@scenic radish ordered should be here in less than 2 hours. You trouble maker. π€£
lol I ordered mine on Amazon Pantry. Should be here in 4 hours
Today I die of a heart attack
Lmao lemme know what you think
4 hours ?
prob will be the cocaine that does me in but whatever
π
@fluid zephyr already migrated to youtube music?
Yeah I live in a major city area so they can do same day delivery up to 9 PM
but Pantry items have been pretty slow
What major city is that LMAO.
Houston
Meh
I say Houston but its really "Houston" since I am west of Houston on the outskirt of it
Fulshear/Katy
@hearty depot Not yet -- I'm holding on to gmusic_player until it burns to ashes π€£
If you say so @mild tapir π π
Post office says so
could be only until end of next month..
Only heard the rant now. aka - you !Β§$% now forcing me to pay for subscription
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/06/youtube-music-library-transfers-your-purchased-music-is-not-welcome-here/
Houston is only about 1/4th the size of NY
population wise
However that was 2010 census
I bet its closer to like 1/2 thanks to Oil at this point
With an all-access pass and gmusicproxy, you can download all the music ( I mean anything availble ) from G Music
uuh thats neat, without drm?
I found YTM to be underwhelming. Id love to move off spotify but I cannot find a great competitor
yep 320 mp3 fully tagged with album art ( if available )
@dull chasm got a question for you. Have you tested HDMI audio only lag main vs zone 2
no not on hdmi yet
I got a free 8TB disk waiting for duty around π
straght audio yes
really thats odd
Indeed
cant adjust vis web ui?
Even pure direct still there.
What equipment are yall playing with?
yamaha a3080
I have a bash script that will download anything in a particular playlist -- I had plans at one point to include it with gmusic_player to automate downloading new music for me -- I can't seem to get past the basics with python though and now time is run a out π¦
pretty damn good ....quad is gonna make me go broke with audio ...its all his fault
It you run through DAC 120ms plus.
you could take a look over to deezloader -not the biggest of all libarys but flac not in gmusic_player context
thats 3080 to 1080?
Shit like Enhancers and Lipsync will add latency/lag
pure direct does it cancel any video processing too ?
Turned off that too. Tested on the 2nd 3080 as well same shit
what's money in the pocket compared to being able to hear the slightest fart from the third backup singer
Honestly HDMI is a POS spec for reasons like this when it comes to audio
something on zone 2 has to be more direct ....only thing that makes sense
That's what I am leaning to. But party mode goes to nuts with Chromecast
@forest edge about 30k
so a tractor lol
yep so my audio buying is on hold for now
sell your shit and get you a straw hat
Trying to breakaway from CC audio guess that's not going to happen.
Are you guys using this for audio only or to a TV?
i still dont see why you dont like the musiccast amps
Come on now.
i am leaving to late for supper
@hearty depot Linux user?
@mild tapir quad does about everything .... i am more of audio guy ....and poorer ...i only have about 12k in mine ....he has about 5 times that or more π€£
quad does illegal trading of fictitious currency
full into it
something
So roast me Saturday?
no compliments
do you come with potato's and carrots?
and thats on sundays only π€£
Back to my garden edging project. Going to need a barrel of bengay tonight.
Linux, is my daily driver.
lol
@tidal bronze i will be doing 5 acres ....so get plenty of pratice and i will buy the ben gay for us both
I want 5 acres
buy it
so I can run out the back door in my draws and empty a mag into some pumpkins.
now that's livin'
5 acres isn't THAT big lol
Says the farmer.
your neighbors can still see you run out the back door with a weapon
next couple of years i want the 51 acres next door
How many tractors is that ?
@forest edge but there are no neighbors here just cows
Actually wait, how are you testing Audio latency on HDMI?
@tidal bronze one big one
Is there special tools for this?
@mild tapir using CC latency adjustment
you really wanna hear mooooo all day?
better than neighbors bitching
lol
Ah. I presume your endpoint doesnt have Auto Lipsync Sync communication
Nothing to do with lipsync. Audio only application
just because neighbors can see me, doesn't mean I care....
yup still gonna hate HDMI for audio I guess
they be like, oh lawd he's at it again.
@mild tapir I don't like HDMI at all for audio but it's getting pretty hard to find CC audio units. For serious audio I only use vinyl
don't the high end systems user fiber optics yet lol.
My biggest issue has always been DSP. The DSP on all these damn receivers is a PITA and adds funky out of sync zoning and shit
if my neighbor shot a weapon on a regular basis next to me, I would sell oil drill rights and place a pumper on the stretch of land closet to them
let them listen to that thing go all night as a payback
On top of it all, HDMI is just a poor spec for audio applications
if my neighbors shot weapons on a regular basis I'd be at their house with a 12 pack...
and my own stuff.
@mild tapir not on aventage. Party mode or main zone sync will take care of all sync issues on all zones.
Huh, I need to look into that then
Right now the only real HDMI based deployments I have is HDMI over IP to control all my TV's and such
My issue is when AVR units are in sync keeping standalone CC units in sync with them because of this main zone HDMI delay. But if I am running only AVR units throughout the house no sync issues at all.
Just need to find a few more CC audio units on eBay and call it a day.
CC being Chromecast right?
CC is Chromecast and CC AUDIO the discontinued analog audio only CC devices. I love them. No lag whatsoever
Yeah the one with the standard 3.5mm jack right?
so where's Jarvis?
whats the correct channel to ask about HACS updates (Community tab)?
For HACS itself: https://discord.gg/dKse3X
For the integrations, #integrations-archived
hard to tell whether its a HACS issue or just HA tbh
The plugins, #frontend-archived
@tidal bronze It makes me sad how everything that google makes that good is basically killed
Couldn't agree more.
And if I see another Google Chat Platform, I am gonna puke
Hangouts β’οΈ 2.0
Can you make your own CC audio out if a Pi Zero and a DAC hat
Can you make your own CC audio out if a Pi Zero and a DAC hat
@hushed basalt yes, i have seen guides on that
One that actually supports Chromecast though?
dunno, would have to look for a software that does
Yeah I kind of regret not getting one when they were available
I just didn't have a need for one at the time
Part of me thinks we should just give the big middle finger to google for whole house audio
And support nymphcast or other projects
They could pull support for existing cc audio devices at any time anyways
At least you know if you have a rpi and open source self hosted solutions you can run it forever
why is supporting chromecast so important? there are plenty of alternatives
Because nothing is as well supported on the user side
DLNA is pretty well supported lol
It's really not

Vinyl and amp π― support
lol vinyl
best there is audio wise
ouch. My friend asked me if I could fix is BluRay Player I guess not now: https://hackaday.com/2020/06/26/ask-hackaday-what-can-be-done-with-your-bootlooping-blu-ray/
Expiring SSL cert bricked almost all newer gen Samsung BluRay Players
damn
Im willing to bet due to the expired cert, they cant even update the device
Samsung has gone completely silent actively ignoring any BluRay hardware RMAs. In most contexts they are now out of warranty
Basically locking them out themselves
the cloud.. worst thing ever
Bluray players run about $50 on ebay I suppose I'll let him know or give him my old Playstation 3
Basically the only way to fix this at this point is to JTAG the thing, grab the firmware, binwalk it, modify the cert, and reflash it.
Totally not worth it
even if class action occurs he will probs get like $5 max and have to fill out loads of documents
@forest edge see also cant brick vinyl
well you can also be a dumbass and jump off a skyscraper
you mean you dont have $2000 record player with .3 grams of pressure applied at the needle with balancers?
I look forward to HAAS (Hardware as a Service). You buy a device and then it bricks itself 1 yr later requiring new hardware upgrade π
Pleb
So planned obsolescence but they tell you up front what they plan on doing and you still buy it anyways?
Shieet, Apple is going all in
Apple is also going back to ARM lol
They also demoed to us at AWS their new Cluster Server Platform they have been working on
windows going to arm too
whats with the ARM hate? seeing it all over the internet
Change is hard
In reality, the only issue is going to be legacy systems that will basically be stuck on older hardware and can no longer be lift and shifted over to new hardware to avoid re-dev costs
I love ARM Assembly, I had to write video driver and frame buffer handler in ASM was straight forward
There is some legit issues with the instruction models that have been noted but they are all like super specific nuance cases
But MACs aren't running A. enterprice legacy crap B. old software.
Apple always forced your hand
Ehh I guess I just prefer x86
Well as Sonoma said, Windows is moving a lot of their products to support ARM
ok but why, like you prefer CISC?
Then we also have all the linux builds for ARM... so on so forth
Software compatibility mainly
fair
In reality, its the future. Things will just have to catch up
Though I suppose that would change in time if ARM becomes more popular
Similar to the death of IPv4
Heh
Ok but no techical reason
Nah
just because its well supported which is damn reasonable reason
Yeah that's all really
Its useless if you cant run shit on it so yeah
cries in FREEBSD on MIPS
Ok its 1Pm time to get out of bed.
Sunday morning sleepin was a tad excessive
Damn son, it's 21:15 on Saturday over here
@rare condor do you know if there's anything equivalent to a beaglebone black but lower wattage
there are heaps of SBCs
I have a friend whos company needs something running off a 10w solar panel for traffic monitoring
9PM Tediore.. don't bend to their 24 hour clock
But its killing the battery
traffic monitoring so just a 10/100 NIC is all you need and a semi decent cpu?
Depends if its a Transparent Bridge or a literal middle man sniffer
yeah need more context
Transparent only 1 nic else might need 2
Beagle Bone black only has 1
so I assume 1
Orange Pi Zero Pulls under full synthetic loads + WIFI max 730mA @ 5v and only cost <$10AUD
I use it to run Zigbee2MQTT
@forest edge 02:22 zulu time here
@dull chasm Zulu π reminds me of ham radio days.
Arietta G25 gets even lower
yep ... after ten years military ....hard to forget
Using Reddit I see
I had to look around
I havent played with ULP in a while
Impressive to say the least however
I feel like modifications to things like cpu schedulers and such can really help with power consumption
looks at the server racks in my house with all servers having C-States disabled
@dull chasm Zulu π reminds me of ham radio days.
@tidal bronze https://i.chzbgr.com/full/6594098944/hC5FA8200/ham-radio
I pay for power line, I use full power line
i worry about you sometimes
Same here.
me?
π€£
yep
you should worry.. lots
Some BEAUtiful days ahead.
Great, now I need to 3d print and paint a chunk of ham looking shell for my transceiver
Then it uses 4G or similar to send to a mqtt broker
So the SBC is an IoT Edge Gateway?
Lol
i would never make it in california ...i would end up in jail/dead for yelling at people calling them snowflakes or etc .....just dont think it would work
@dull chasm you will be fine riding shotgun.
lol snowflakes
I don't have too many details haha. I think the tech (my friend is a dev there doesn't deal with the tech) is stubborn
@forest edge he's dying to move over here. Just going through the sour grapes phase.
He wrote his own radio protocol, because "control"
I was Sr Cloud Ops Engineer and Lead Solutions Architect at AWS for the IoT Platform and Firecracker.
I hate every damn bit of it
@tidal bronze i dont think a redneck or the local poplulation would mix
I wanted to live in cali at one point.. but to be honest it was only for looking at beach blondes and then I grew out of that phase lol
You will be just fine. @dull chasm
I also hate Alexa since its basically duct tape backend
@forest edge so you couldn't get by a Cali 8?
and no one wanted to put the time in to fix it
they would say something about my boots or hat and i would put a boot with cowshit on it up there rear
I never got the big buzz around consumer IoT. Obviously it's exploded but it's always seemed shit sandwich interms of implementation
Oops you didn't live here. @forest edge
It was mainly written by interns
I design a platform solution and they do exactly what I said not to do.
I am so happy I left that damn job
@dull chasm I've seen a few with boots down in West Hollywood
Why have interns if I have to redo all the damn work anyways
and leave my team with bunch of useless shit to do destroying our priority system
Although I don't know ig you wear shorts shorts with boots. π€£ @dull chasm
see some shit like that would go south quick @tidal bronze
Short short and boots. That would be epic @dull chasm
Fuck it go Speedo
not happening
π€£
i obivously have a hard enough time being pc and you want me in the middle of it ....somebody is having a bad night
policitly correct
I shouldve put a /s
@dull chasm we will see when you come down here for a visit. Bring extra clothes.
oh i am slow sometimes
@mild tapir not sure if you know him but I went to a local panel last year where Michael Needham was on it
He seemed down to earth
i bring horse and protection ....
Yes I have had interactions with him but only virtually
Since he is in Australia most of the time after all
The Solutions Arch leadership was made of great people.
But those above us
They are next level toxic
The culture there sucked
ok quad i betting fighting my eyelids for a hour now ....past my bedtime
i bring horse and protection ....
@dull chasm dwarf horse and condoms? sounds like a party
@dull chasm night man. Yep past your bedtime for sure.
Who let the furry discord trust and saftey team in here?
@forest edge have you ever considered counseling?
@tidal bronze why you offering?
Hes AllTheFoxes in disguise!
When the founder of the company believes there's no charitable use for his wealth on earth so he can help mankind best by venturing into space
I'm not surprised it's toxic culture
How's that cookie butter @tidal bronze
O shit I left that stuff on the porch
@hushed basalt It had an "We are the best and elite" culture to it too.
It was really annoying
You were expected to work at home on any given notice and if you were driving or something and cant get to a computer, you are in trouble
Their answer? Bring a laptop everywhere
That's bullshit
If you were sick and took more than 2 days off? written up
One person got written up while in the damn hospital
See previous statement
I stayed long enough to get the nice title and dipped
They have the audacity to call me back and ask to rehire me... at 15k less a year
I literally said "Go fuck yourself"
I wonder how the other FANGs compare
I'm actually considering getting a new job that's full-time WFH
God help you if you are working on Azure
GCP is ran by entirely outsourced work force that has no communications between them. They are falling apart rapidly
Now I work for OVH to help them build a new cloud platform to compete
And everyone is 100x nicer
makes a hell of a difference
Been full time work from home for over 2 years now. Been enjoying it
I've been working from home full time since March 14 but I'll be going back to the office at least part time starting next week :/
I've enjoyed WFH so much that I'm legit considering getting a new job that would allow me to do it full time lol
About a snowball's chance in hell of my current employer letting me do it. Great company but unfortunately resistant to concepts like WFH
Oof, sorry bois. Didn't mean to kill the conversation π¦
Sorry daughter is being a toddler
How rude of her
Trying to climb headfirst off the couch
Everything is so much easier before they learn to climb
I wonder what Netflix is like to work at
They have a product that is actually decent, no idea what their internal culture is like though
Their CDN nodes are super fascinating
They have lots of FOSS stuff out there that is used in many places now
I have one of those on my ISP I run. They work extremely well
I was amazed
I would love to see OCA's used in other platforms
Would be tricky. Wonder if youtube, amazon, or hulu have anything similar
They definitely use cdns but this is kindof a step further than that
Aryaka was doing something like this way back
You could setup these BGP Optimizers, Edge Cache, and Gateway systems to link between your internal sites to increase speeds and better use avail bandwidth
Speaking of VOD and AWS
My god is prime video for webOS a piece of hot garbage
The content is trash as well. And I haven't used the app on other platform
I've seen 2 man fullstack teams make better stuff than that app
Old and neglected
Don't have Hulu here so I can't comment on that
Itβs both weird and hard to use
Prime Video is actually being used as a testing ground for PoC stacks for AWS.
Originally it wasnt such
I can't wait till I set up pfsense so I can play around with BGP for k8s
Piece of Crap
Hehe
But... Whos a better QA team than your customers
Good thing no one watches it anyway :D
They eat the cost of giving you some stuff to watch since everyone has prime just to get use out of it for data
They use that to build newer VOD Platforms for AWS. That and analytical data ofc like your genre habits which get sold away but who cares about privacy right?
Data brokers be like shhh, don't draw attention to us
The amount of people who go "If Facebook wants to know which tv shows I like who cares" if disappointing but not surprising
I was supposed to sign an NDA so I did in the HR office, but when the HR lady turned around I took out the signature for NDA off the bottom and she never checked the paperwork. Just was like yeah yer good. Suck it amazon
I still got it somewhere
Could you imagine people in congress trying to understand analytics
Theres a local aws SA here who has true believer written all over him
Their soul was eaten
Honestly there was some amazing people to work with. Its really management thats causing drama
One of my friends started as a SA in Melbourne late last year
I hope he doesn't get eaten
If I had to give him advice it would be keep your head down and opinions to yourself.
If you wanted to work with AWS and have fun, cloud consultants like Onica are much more rewarding
AWS is just a stepping stone on the resume
Have you read Gene Kims Unicorn Project
I'm trying to get a junior position at the local "rockstar" consultant firm here
But covid has put that on the back burner haha
:'(
The big 4 accounting consultancies are firing a lot of their consultants
And I know a lot of them have huge lifestyle creep
Earning big salaries with big expenses
But yeah I had it in audiobook form.
It hit some really hard nails for me
Lifestyle creep is going to be checked for a lot of people by the end of this
Lots of life lessons are being dished out
The one thing I note is the sensei talks about technical debt taking down even the biggest companies
Yes. Pieces of Google have fell to this. Apple is also eating this.
Microsoft most of all
I worry a lot of companies undervalue how important their tribal knowledge and practices are in their workforce
And will shed a lot of people
Top it all off, you have AT&T finally eating shit over technical debt
Then end up being run by armies of people who have no idea what they're doing
No documentation? Turns into legacy that never dies
Instead it kills you
Tech is moving so fast it's hard to keep up
The Amazon shopping app is terrible too, at least on android
Code monkies and floor keepers are not real talent.
Did you write this lol
Hah. No but i can say it's too true.
And funny enough you are not first to ask.
I really feel the write up though. Amazon is killing their talented workforce and I fear with so many systems relying on it.. it may become a hindrance
@scenic radish iOS one is in house development. Android was outsourced to a Pakistan based team
Are you familiar with wardley maps
Yeah. Seen them in business development meetings and training
Strategy building or some shit
Steven Wardley is very in love with himself, so I take his stuff with a huge grain of salt
But some of it makes sense
messing with this bayesian sensor.. head is about to explode lol
@mild tapir interesting...
One takeaway is don't outsource your business differentiators
This is how it's supposed to be done...
This is what we do instead...
Management red flags 101
@forest edge probabilities is fun tho
What are you trying to predict with it?
was just messing with it using my pir/motion/weather as the entity observations
The amount of times I've seen companies try to do their industry equivalent of building their own power station instead of buying it from a utility...
Like my old shitty job. The management/owners would only spend about a third of a week actually working, which is fine do what you want. But the limited time they were there they didn't do any management, market research, reaching out to clients, stratergising, or any sort of guiding plan
But would just jump on whatever low level shiny thing that caught their eye at the moment, contract themselves out for jobs where they would spend 3 days prep for 1 days work and simultaneously bring down the market rate for the core business, and try to fix and insource everything themselves when it's just commodity shit
This is why I love watching the Ubiquiti dumpster fire. They actually tried doing all of the correct management things but just suck at it. Task failed successfully kinda shit.
I haven't read much into ubiquiti
I have never seen a company fail the other way like they have
TL;DR Hardware Engineers are not C-Level material or good software engineers
Or lawyers
But they tried
Lack of diversification?
Oh yeah and had 40 some odd million scammed from them
It's more lack of experience and competencies
And their company is like an L2 flat network
With no communication
So you get shit like Edge series and Unifi that don't really work together
Even though they tried...
They even rolled their own encryption
Like bruh...
Urgh
Networking equipment and failure of the fundamentals?
Yikes
Oh yeah and they left debug mode on lots of shit exposing tons of stuff
Totally production ready amirite
I just have a unifi AP
It's a spawn of some hobbiest network hardware homelabber that wanted to make Networking gear at market disruptive pricing but bit off more than they could chew
Their other gear has zero interest to me
I see a lot of that in the homelab reddit/discours
People with a shitload of knowledge and experience in hardware
Half their staff is marketing
But zero big picture skills
I'll say it: If your hardware is good but software is shit
Your product is shit
You get what you pay for in this case.
For just as good and cheaper with controller with same capabilities: Grandstream.
Want the full kit? Zyxel.
Zyxel is what Ubi wanted to be but failed to be
Ubi just has lots of marketing
I'll remeber that
I'll need to kit out my house when I am not renting
It pains me being a licensed cabler and having to use wifi around the house
Oof
if the hardware is good and the software is shit is not as bad the reversal.
Go try to setup IGMP on Ubi equipment and come back to me. I'd rather know it's shit right off and return it then find all the quirks in software later on
hardware in question can make all the difference in the world
And Ubi leaves that taste of "almost but no" which is frustrating
That and all the exploits that expose shit
you guys are talking about very specific but my statement is more general
It honestly just depends on situation, equipment, use case, and so on
Just give me some comware switches and pfsense, we'll figure it out
Back to the basics is sometimes better way to go
Anyways I'm now 5 days in with 1.5 hours of sleep. I'm dying so I'ma hit the hay. Y'all have a good night
I'm still not comfortable with the new Arubaos, provisionos is too limited and comware 5/7 just does what it says on the tin, nx-os is usable, but ACI is just so full of bugs I can't understand why they even dare sell it
Has yours had her sleep regression yet atx
@clear ferry
Sous vide time
We are usually in the same 2 hour window, depending on how long / if she slept in kindergarten
Im just tired of the whole wifi-game. I did go down the unifi rabbit hole, and im not sure I agree it sucks (though I agree why in the world the edge and unifi does not work together is rather stupid), but it given 10x more flexibility than other routers. Though I dont know - what in your opinion is the current best wifi router on the marked?
WiFi routers are so 2005
I'm contemplating the Asus ZenWiFi AX
Reviews are good, and it'll future proof me for "some time"
Greetings!
I just got into home assisstant and am trying to setup various things, so far, it gives enough feedback I can usually sus out what I'm doing, and I am so thankful for that.
Welcome to the money pit
No money so far, Home Assisstant is just happily running on my laptop in a VM
Just wait π
My late father would have loved this, he dreamed of a home that was as automated as some of the stuff I see people doing with home assistant.
I've got some of his old gear, we'll see what I can rig up to home assistant.
Some of it is TP-Link stuff, some of it... I am not sure, I think it might all be TP-Link? I've only used the bulbs because I didn't know what to do with some smart plugs and switches yet.
I've gone from "A few google assistant scenes" to "I'm here chatting while I wait for the docker instance of mycroft in portainer in my VM to restart to see if I got the pulse-audio server config right so I can talk into it."
Hrm. Pulse Audio is a black box to me.
I wonder if I would be better served just using Almond/Ada? I have no idea. I'll just bang my head against this for a little while XD
#voice-assistants-archived can help you with ... voice assistants
I'm sorry, I don't need actually need help, I was just being social and thinking aloud.
π
I might not actually end up needing help! Home Assiastant consistently gives me the tools to debug my problems.
By and large the logging is excellent and it's very flexible
(at least the core platform)
Have you used any of the assistant integrations? Any thoughts on them, especially the open source ones?
Fair enough. I just would like to be able to talk to my PC with that and using the SDK locally has been hell for talking to it.
Doing stuff by voice feels unnatural anyway
I don't wanna have to bust out my phone all the time.
Then you make conditions based on stuff that happens or doesn't happen
I was thinking Asus ZenWiFi AX too, but dunno yet. would like it to support vlans
Yeah, VLAN for guest WiFi would be handy
thats why I current are stuck on unifi as it gives me those options
I have to send you three of my access points you say@clever mortar ?

I have 24 unused in a box
Still in boxes
WTF
O_o
You accumulate hardware in scary ways π
Msm466

We had 200 left over from a project, I took a box
Installed 1500 total
Plus the 25000 switch ports
Ever used a grandstream AP?
No
Bluh, I don't even know how to phrase my questions to make them meaningfully answerable. I think I'm going to give in and just use the google assistant integration.
Ah yes, I know the brand from their VOIP stuff
I don't have antennas though, just the AP's
But you can use any external ones that fit with RP connectors
You're an offbrand name

I used a bunch of these when I installed a few at home
Think I paid $1 each at the time
Mother knew I wanted a Roomba but didn't want to waste that much money on one. So she found one for a bargain! Note, it has zero vacuuming ability. - https://i.redd.it/0x3jpaz693041.png
Lol
Doesn't look like it has any sweep ability either
Roborock looks interesting
Wonder if it has a speaker
Too bad they don't have a base station collector yet
For making vacuum sounds
Vvvvrrrooooommmmm
I think Iβll stick to Nutella. - https://i.redd.it/sy8iduxsa4n01.jpg
Is that a mask for asmr self pleasure?

Sweep, the roomba knockoff in action (by request) - https://v.redd.it/m4ay5762l4041
Nah, he just knocked his headset off his head, then decided he'd rather use earbuds
Here it is in action@hushed basalt
It's a noise cancelling face mask
So you can speak on the phone without bothering other people in the office
Just sounds like this then?
Yeah... watermark fail, but it had to be uploaded! Also note Jimmy Carr's awesome laugh.
That's... actually kinda cool.
Shitty vodka then
Mostly 50-60% so 100-120 proof then?
Sous vide to the rescue
It says gluten free π
Max allowed here is 69% I think, 70 and above is considered narcotics
But Norwegians traditionally make a lot of their own, up to 95%
All vodka is gluten free, even the wheat ones
Wheat allergies it's not worth the risk
That'd be a question for #frontend-archived π
No worries. Our baseline here is way lower than this π
I ungave up on using Google Assitant fwiw. I'm kinda determined to figure out this pulse audio over network thing now.
I think that may be a task for a me that has not been up all night however.
Feel like I got super close, but unfortunately I am the linux guy of most of the tech people I know (and I'm not that versed), so I don't really have anywhere up the chain to go on that one. So hopefully more awake me can just facepalm and realize what I did wrong.
Yeah.
There is atleast a bunch down the chain
ok, I think (thanks to the ever wonderful arch wiki) I might have figured it out, Let's see if I suddenly get startled by mycroft talking to me.
I am dreading getting this working, I hate being startled.
Jebus Crimminy
It worked, and I just about knocked my laptop off desk.
I feel like dancing around like an idiot.
I love solving things.
I also care not one lick how practical this is, it's got an awesome factor of π―
You need to go browse a few GitHub repos of people's setups... practical is rarely a factor π
Hey guys, i just found about about custom header and footers on cards... https://www.home-assistant.io/lovelace/header-footer/ is this something you are using? Is there a collection of nice header images somewhere
See #frontend-archived for all your frontend related questions
And the answer is ... the forum π
we have a "wet room /mud room" wife bleached the floor ....now wait for the good part ......we have a small dog that we cant always take outside or let it run free ... so here is the timeline
Wife Bleaches floor
Puts new puppy pad down
Puppy goes to pee
Chemical reaction
Puppy sneezes and runs still peeing
π
I feel dumb, but I spent all this time setting up mycroft, home assistant, kvm/qemu to run it, zeroteir-one to tie a bunch of stuff together, and what can it do? Mycroft will tell me when my phone battery is low so I remmeber to plug it in.
But also accomplished.
I do wish the mobile app had a few more things it could do, but it's all good.
It results in the same, just Label the nodes worker=true
Label them gru and minions π
We are about to update a customer platform to 1.18.x on k3s
I just opened up one of my 4TB drives that had stopped responding in Freenas, seems like the heads had not gone back to park for some reason, spun the heads backwards and pushed the heads back in places appears to be no damage to heads, so putting it back into freenas to see if it recognises it

We can't all be as fΓΌhrerthinking as you
HDDeez nuts
π¦ π₯
2 hdds use as much power as 1 of my optiplex nodes
It's surprising how much more power my rack uses when I run k3s and rancher vs not
Prometheus on top of that
The SAN i have in my garage uses 1600w if I turn it on, and its just 28 drives and two controllers
It's like phowar
Using 1/3rd of the ram and not even running any services
Why do norwegians even have heat pumps
Why not just run SANs as radiators
@dusky plank thats not really too cool tbh
π€·ββοΈ
Nice wirewrap semiconductor junction.
Hey all, I have a couple minka aire fans that use a remote and a code in the remote, similar to how garage door openers have. Is there any way I could integrate that into HA?
Wtf is that contraption @hushed basalt
so redicolus that this little spiders are so deadly
Smaller = more deadly usually
Which is why Americans are both dangerous and harmless at the same time

π€
werent that the π―π΅ ?
Hey hey now, not all of us are land whales
@fathom sparrow i am saying we say nothing of others but most others have something to say about us .....must mean they are jealous
atx is a wanna be american cowboy
prolly has a John Wayne action figure collection π€£
@clear ferry ?
Love it
New itt
Does anyone know if they made an adapter for power drills to be able to use bigger bits with a 1/2" shank?
collet there are diff types and sizes but generally if the bit is not necked down to 1/2" the drill will not be able to handle it anyway
@rain swift
it is
Where can I go to ask for help connecting my Pi4 with Homeassistant OS to wifi?
I've already tried the usb method and the terminal method with nmcli.
Got farthest with nmcli, even connected, but it reset everything after a reboot.
#330990055533576204 @minor sapphire

so they were stealing stuff, someone decides to rob the place, they take the guy out and run off with the stuff, I guess they paid for it one way or another, haha.
So anyone into vr glasses?
That video is an add for a Facebook series called Five Points or something like that.
aww, page not found
@clear ferry it's a pillar for copper telephone wires
Basically an IDF in the street
Main cables from the exchange (say 400 pair) come in and get distributed to say 50/30 pair cables distributed to peoples homes
Now the NBN has mostly replaces the main cables with fibre backhauls
So people's internet is still running on these monstrosities. And those highly skilled soldering jobs
That makes me sick. Luckily I havenβt lived anywhere that uses those for a long time! Almost 5 years I think. Never going back to non fibre
Snake to the node
outback ingenuity lol
Nothing outback about it. Same as any telecom tech anywhere
From 2004 Europe or present day murica
i've never seen anything remotely like that
maybe our rural areas had something like that
this is what we have in rural areas but don't see too many inside city limits https://seeclickfix.com/files/issue_images/0003/3595/1299083078718.jpg
That's what we call an elevated joint
odd name but fits
that lools toasty
That's not under maintenance. That's how they are normally
The pit joint not the burnt one
ouch
All hail corporatism
no shit ...is that a sealed termination thingy
Thats an epoxy/ jelly like thing
Gel joints we called it
Biggest fuckup in Telecoms history. I'll bbl but I'll follow up with the story
yea we got that too ....except in bags on poles ... i never worked telecom in a city enviorment
maybe our rural areas had something like that
@forest edge π€
@scenic radish will be next Saturday, was too late. Back on keto. π
@tidal bronze you wouldn't know anything about rural areas π
he will ....when he visits ...he is volunteered to clean the stalls π€£
and how to stimulate the bull and semenate the heffer
lmao
