Yes. Not trying lol going to.

forest edge

there is an api i found that changes when the doorbell is pressed. would it be easier to have something like HA trigger the intercom?

your doing that through the chime thing right?

tidal bronze
#

Thanks I'm going to look into it

scenic radish
#

It's just my fiancee and me...and now apparently my server heh

dusk lodge
#

does anyone physically cringe when you see someone running 100W+ incandescents

scenic radish
#

Heat lamps

dusk lodge
#

my dad still does and I don't understand why he doesn't just want to spend 10p more to run LED

#

Or at least CFL

#

that's not even a joke

#

I went to the shop today because I needed 2 replacement bulbs

#

ยฃ1.59 for incandescent

#

ยฃ1.99 for CFL or LED

#

and the CFL / LED were 800 and 1200lm while the incandescent was 90w+ and 600lm so god knows why he buys them

unreal orbit
#

Isnโ€™t that 40p?

dusk lodge
#

sorry good sir, 40p

#

but the point stands tbh its such a non existent difference and it would literally null his lighting bills

unreal orbit
#

Agree ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

dusk lodge
#

let me do some maths here...

#

at 40p difference, changing all 5 bulbs in the house would be a ยฃ2.00 cost

#

assuming a rough average of 100W per bulb, that's 500W

#

so his new bill would be for between 50-100W depending on quite how bright he wants them

#

I would say a ยฃ2 investment into literally getting a 5-10x lower bill makes sense but ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ‡ท

scenic radish
#

Yeah, LEDs generally use 1/6 the power of incandescents of comparable brightness

dusk lodge
#

the only reason I can see of using incandescents is that they look authentically warm if that makes sense

#

but in such a case I think halogen or good 2500-2700K CFL's would be a good replacement

scenic radish
#

Yeah, a good 2700K LED lamp with a high CRI should be good

dusk lodge
#

Obviously I'm not actually asking how to make one

#

But in movies and games, you have those scenes where someone sets off a bomb by dialling a number

#

How does that work...?

scenic radish
#

Lmao

#

"asking for a friend"

dusk lodge
#

I've never seen something like that outside of bomb scenes in movies

#

But it would be an interesting (even if impractical) trigger

#

Something like dialling a number to open a door would be cool even if it would make no practical sense

#

also on a different topic, is it possible to replace LEDs in a backlit (but not RGB) keyboard with addressables?

scenic radish
#

Not without changing the circuitry entirely

unreal orbit
#

You solder leads to the speaker output for the phone

#

Itโ€™s pretty low tech

Lmao

#

@unreal orbit for the bomb making win ๐ŸŒฎ

unreal orbit

That was purely advice for the door opening automation ๐Ÿ˜‰

hushed basalt
#

Now we're on a list

tidal bronze
#

@dusk lodge it's just the idea of remote triggering. Takes a little more than to make it work. Back in the day phones did have trigger outs. If you were to do it now the shortcut would be to use the vibration motor out which is ~3v which can inturn trigger a relay etc.

#

Technically you can do wonders with vibration pulse out to any logic you can imagine. ๐Ÿ˜€ Since phones come with various vibration patterns. ๐Ÿ˜œ

You don't want the dominos guy to call for pizza ready before the said event. ๐Ÿ˜‚

that switch thing came with those pigtails

wet pilot

lucid dock
#

ya I'm not quite sure how to test that lol

scenic radish
#

looks like there is

last dirge
#

the neutral comin out of that switch is attached to SOMETHING

#

looks like it's got a ground, hot1, hot2, neutral

wet pilot
#

It might be 14/4 which would be sweet

last dirge
#

why would it need all that?

#

14/3 would do the job

wet pilot
#

One line 2 load nutral and ground(earth)

last dirge
#

that's 14/3

#

the uninsulated ground isn't counted

lucid dock
#

so that tanish one in the back might be the neutral i need?

wet pilot
#

Ah

last dirge
#

is the white one comin out of the switch connected to it?

wet pilot

last dirge
lucid dock

the one in the switch is yellow

wet pilot
#

last dirge
#

fix your damn white balance ๐Ÿ™‚

lucid dock
#

lol the sitcker on the case is white

#

my white balance is fine

wet pilot
#

Red would go up to the light kit. Typically black to the fan motor

#

Since that switch isn't smart it wouldn't need neutral

last dirge
#

pull all that out

#

so it's not just a jammed up mess of wires

#

@wet pilot some dimmers use neutral

wet pilot
#

Easiest way to tell is up at the fixture

lucid dock
#

ya i think that tan one might be it

last dirge
#

up at the fixture won't tell him if he's got a neutral in that box though

lucid dock
#

i dont think you can see anything at the fixture without removing the whole ceiling fan

last dirge
#

there's probably one or two screws at the top that you can undo and the cover at the ceiling will come off

#

sometimes with a slight turn

#

your house has probably had its wiring updated in the past 80 years

lucid dock
#

im almost positive one is ground, one is fan, one is light, and one is line

last dirge
#

at least partially

lucid dock
#

ya it did

wet pilot

Black is definitely line

#

Check the pigtails and see what they go to

if so, chances are that someone, maybe not you, could put that switch in

rare condor
#

I know an Engineer who has died for 120VAC. Anything above ELV, is dangerous. 120V is enough for the heart to enter into fibrillation, and unless someone gets an AED on you within a couple minutes, that's the end. In addition, the alternating current locks the muscles in a spasm, so you can't pull away. With low voltage DC, your greatest danger is burns. 120VAC is dangerous, the US has a very different culture to DIY electrical than Australia. In Australia, all modern houses have proper GFCI (RCDs) very strict installation standards and safety standards. Suggesting 110V-120v is safe is not reasonable.

lucid dock

hushed basalt

But there's effectively unlimited amount of current behind a domestic supply

#

It's only your circuit breakers/fuses turning off, eventually, that stops it

Assuming you're a load across active and neutral

last dirge

I think I'm limited by the transformer at the front of my lot to 300a

Deepstack puts tensor to shame. WTH ๐Ÿค”

#

Guess the Google coral is going back in the box.

ocean mirage
#

if you get electrocuted dont newer breakers break

#

somehow

hoary wasp
#

my understanding is it's a GFCI outlet that does that, by sensing the power going down the neutral back to the panel doesn't match the load coming into the hot (meaning there's current grounding outside of the receptacle somewhere - a person, a toaster tossed into a tub filled with water, etc). The breaker just controls the flow in and cuts it off if the amperage gets too high for the wiring to handle.

to badtel's point above, if you get current flowing through you, you're gonna be dead before the circuit breaker hits the amperage required to trip it. my house's panel has all 20 amp breakers, and like he says, well below 1 amp is enough to do you in.

of course, I'm no electrician, if I'm misspeaking, anyone in the know should feel free to correct me

clear ferry

No it was the e5577

scenic radish

@forest edge yeah I only got it because it was $13 shipped and I have that spare active SIM

#

And SMS from my server sounded interesting

forest edge

so your using a data plan solely for sending a sms?

scenic radish

Suppose so, three lines is the same cost as two, so it was sitting unused

forest edge
#

ah, i might have had an admin ban you from the server if you actually were paying just for that

if it's free at no cost, you should have got the router thing, that way if for whatever reason your net went down while you were at home you would still have internet

well i guess 13 bucks is cheap, but I would certianly find a better use for that dongle than a sms if your net is reliable lol

scenic radish
#

Well I could use it as a cell connection for my server

#

Not entirely sure how to configure automatic fallback

forest edge

you can't. that has to be made between your modem and current router OR with a combo unit

I confirmed the dongle sends SMS, not MMS

Well, it can send MMS too, but texts are indeed SMS

#

Obviously an unlikely scenario

#

Mainly just thought it'd be fun to mess with

I'm having trouble understanding how a light switch could be changed "not to code"

rare condor
#

Laissez-faire attitude is not witnessed

#

@unreal orbit Say I changed a light switch to split out a fan and a light which once where on the same circuit, by law that new circuit must be RCD protected and replaced with an RCBO at the breaker >30mA

last dirge
#

that's code in the US too

unreal orbit
#

Well that's not really "changing a light switch", you're changing the circuit

rare condor
#

Any changes require existing wiring be brought up to whatever new code at present AS3000:2018

last dirge
#

and most houses built in the last 15 years already have arc fault breakers anywhere there would normally be a fan

rare condor
#

Its a requirement in Australia EVERY circuit (apart from Oven) be RCD protected (certain exceptions exist - very context specific)

brazen fable
#

Yeah honestly changing a light switch is NBD

#

cut power, change switch, restore power. Not that difficult

last dirge
#

"how to change a light bulb. Step 1. Call an electrician"

brazen fable
#

Hell I was taught to do it in a high school electronics class

#

Freshman year at that

unreal orbit
#

I wonder how the electrocution death rate in the US compares to Australia

rare condor
#

I am not disagreeing with the simplicity I am stating what is law. But teaching others over discord how to do wiring is not ideal imo.

#

I am curious too

unreal orbit
#

I'm trying to find a good source, most of them seem to only be listing "workplace deaths"

brazen fable
#

It can be learned in 5 minutes from a you tube video

#

and learning how to wire a 3-way a couple extra minutes i guess

rare condor
#

I should mention Australia/ New Zealand has the strictest wiring laws of any modern western democratic country. US has the least in most contexts.

unreal orbit
#

Very non-vetted random internet data suggests 400 per year in the US and 47 per year in Australia

#

which is pretty much identical per capita

rare condor
#

Source?

unreal orbit
#

Very non-vetted random internet data

rare condor
#

so meaningless

tidal bronze
#

@last dirge I think US code needs to be revamped for switched mode PSUs and variable loads which is the future of lighting.

last dirge
#

@tidal bronze I think that stuff should move toward switches/other controls being NOT line voltage

rare condor
#

8 (15%) were Victims of lightning, all of them males. A total of 17 deaths were due to Intentional self-harm by other specified means including electrocution (31%),

#

all of them males?

brazen fable
#

Why would you intentionally electrocute yourself

#

What the fuck

unreal orbit
#

I took the lightning strikes out of the quoted number

tidal bronze
#

@last dirge yes but the average electrician that comes for a house visit is cluless

rare condor
#

@brazen fable at HV say 25kV higher its pretty fast

last dirge
#

@tidal bronze yeah, like the guy that I paid to find out why an outlet was dead

#

and he cut 10 holes in drywall and after 4 hours said "I can't figure out where this feed is going"

#

so I bought an RF tracer, plugged it in

tidal bronze
#

With cutting edge stuff last thing I would want is "call an electrician"

last dirge
#

traced it up the wall, across this other wall, down the wall and to a hidden GFI outlet

#

oh, the outlet was tripped click

tidal bronze
#

Lol

last dirge
#

hey the other outlet works now

rare condor
#

@tidal bronze Last Sparky I called, programmed PLC also ran HASS and had degree in EE. Requires 5 yrs min in Aus

last dirge
#

and they also drywall sawed two of my poe cables

brazen fable
#

That would anger me just a bit

last dirge
#

so now I have to put up two access panels where I patched the cables back together

tidal bronze
#

@rare condor thats great but that does not say much in grand scheme of things.

#

Its pretty hard to find a well rounded GC

rare condor
#

Well as a System Integrator I spent most of my time on site, and every sparky both domestic and commercial has had very good knowledge of Electrical.

#

Every American I speak to seems to say their sparky's are hopeless.

#

It might just be a reflection of different cultures and the training each goes through.

For me there's a big difference between knowing the code and getting stuff done. Pointless knowing the theory inside out unless you are equally good at building structure.
