assuming a rough average of 100W per bulb, that's 500W
so his new bill would be for between 50-100W depending on quite how bright he wants them

@dusk lodge it's just the idea of remote triggering. Takes a little more than to make it work. Back in the day phones did have trigger outs. If you were to do it now the shortcut would be to use the vibration motor out which is ~3v which can inturn trigger a relay etc.
Technically you can do wonders with vibration pulse out to any logic you can imagine. 😀 Since phones come with various vibration patterns. 😜

I know an Engineer who has died for 120VAC. Anything above ELV, is dangerous. 120V is enough for the heart to enter into fibrillation, and unless someone gets an AED on you within a couple minutes, that's the end. In Australia, all modern houses have proper GFCI (RCDs) very strict installation standards and safety standards. Suggesting 110V-120v is safe is not reasonable.

my understanding is it's a GFCI outlet that does that, by sensing the power going down the neutral back to the panel doesn't match the load coming into the hot (meaning there's current grounding outside of the receptacle somewhere - a person, a toaster tossed into a tub filled with water, etc). The breaker just controls the flow in and cuts it off if the amperage gets too high for the wiring to handle.
to badtel's point above, if you get current flowing through you, you're gonna be dead before the circuit breaker hits the amperage required to trip it. my house's panel has all 20 amp breakers, and like he says, well below 1 amp is enough to do you in.
of course, I'm no electrician, if I'm misspeaking, anyone in the know should feel free to correct me

Well as a System Integrator I spent most of my time on site, and every sparky both domestic and commercial has had very good knowledge of Electrical.
Every American I speak to seems to say their sparky's are hopeless.
It might just be a reflection of different cultures and the training each goes through.
