hushed basalt
#

Shouldn't your router just treat that as untrusted

dusky plank
#

what do you mean by untrusted?

hushed basalt
#

Well it should block any incoming packets without a forwarded port

dusky plank
#

it does

#

only the reverse nginx gets through on these ports

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt I looked at my old photos, I have nothing on the watch, I bought some watch repair tools and fiddled with it. Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

hushed basalt
#

That's okay, it helps a lot

#

Were you able to access the retention springs when you took the latch apart

#

Clasp I should say

rare condor
#

yes

hushed basalt
#

That's good to know

rare condor
#

It took me like an hour of fiddling

hushed basalt
#

It would probably cost me like an $100 to buy a new clasp

#

Titanium $$

rare condor
#

indeed

hushed basalt
#

If I could even source it

rare condor
#

I managed to buy an ecodrive titanium used on ebay for 99aud

#

so options are out there

hushed basalt
#

Mine looks very similar to yours

#

The band

rare condor
#

often starbuy sells them for $200 new mark

#

(entire watch)

hushed basalt
#

I'll weigh it up. I'll get a repair kit for $25 off amazon

rare condor
#

👍

hushed basalt
#

Part of me wants to get a smart watch anyways

#

Even if it's just something that tells the time and lets me use ble presence

rare condor
#

yeah, I think the simpler the better, get some thing with decent battery

#

Anyone used, using PiHole?

hushed basalt
#

I'll probably look at mi band 5

#

Have you tried putting something on your server/router

rare condor
#

nah always used ublock origin

#

and had youtube premium so no utube ads

dusky plank
#

pihole doesn‘t work with youtube for me, still need to use extensions

#

everything else is fine

last plaza
#

YouTube is smart. They use the same domain/ip for their ads, hard to distinguish between video traffic and ad traffic.

#

I’m sure they will go extreme lengths to protect their income.

dusky plank
#

yep, there‘s a blocklist for youtube available @ some github repos but they often block too much and then videos don‘t play at all

last plaza
#

Yup. Tried that, it caused more problems than solving it.

hushed basalt
#

I think long term it's going to have to be browser based blocking

rare condor
#

fair enough, so pihole isn't that great then?

last plaza
#

It used to work earlier by blocking some domains. But not anymore.

hushed basalt
#

It's definitely an arms race

last plaza
#

PiHole is still awesome! I can’t live without it.

hushed basalt
#

And the more popular blocking applications become the more aggressively they're countermeasured

last plaza
#

Yup. Exactly

hushed basalt
#

I don't run anything atm except browser extensions

last plaza
#

Browser extensions are fine. But problem is the apps on iPad and phone.

rare condor
#

The only use for Pihole I see is phones

dusky plank
#

you at least don‘t have to install all the extensions for every browser with pihole though and it saves battery the less extensions you run so i like it too

rare condor
#

So I might just set the DNS on my phones only

#

yeah but its anooying for whitelisting

last plaza
#

You will be amazed how much spam and malware gets filtered out with piHole and ad blockers. Keeps family safe, and no more annoying pop ups that looks legitimate for some folks.

hushed basalt
#

Any ecommerce site that uses popups is an instant nope from me

last plaza
#

Your machine is infected, click to download the exe to clean your computer shit. Most people blindly click and download malware.

hushed basalt
#

Unless I'm desperate

rare condor
#

so you enable it for every device?

dusky plank
#

jailbreaking amd tweaks are the solutions for me on ios and youtube

hushed basalt
#

Do people actually sign up for newsletter registration forms that pop up

last plaza
#

Haven’t jailbreaked for a very long time.

hushed basalt
#

Sounds like misguided marketing wank. Lead acquisition at all costs

last plaza
#

lol. You will be amazed how many people actually click and register

hushed basalt
#

How about you, have a simple performant site and a frictionless checkout experience.

#

Jeez people are stupid

#

We're doomed

last plaza
#

I know some neighbors, computer illiterates, they click anything they see.

dusky plank
#

annoying thing is that googles first page is now plastered with links via ad networks now, so if you want to download e.g chrome - the first link is usually not going to work

last plaza
#

Because it says “click here”

hushed basalt
#

It's funny going back to 2012 and looking at peoples comments about the NBN

rare condor
#

My mother keeps giving out her phone number to random sites, she always wonders why she gets so many spam calls.

dusky plank
#

@hushed basalt have you heard about this cookie consent thingie? 😄 2 overlays at least! I dont get it either

hushed basalt
#

"We don't need fibre it's such a waste of money for gamers and pirates"

wet pilot
#

Plus gdpr

#

And the covid notice

last plaza
#

GDPR is a joke.

hushed basalt
#

I wonder if people will illegally use registration forms from covid for marketing

wet pilot
#

Definitely

hushed basalt
#

Atm here when you go to a public place you have to sign in

dusky plank
#

even if you opt out - the setting still uses a cookie 😂

last plaza
#

If you have the data, and request someone to delete your data, they can replicate the data into a different jurisdiction without your knowledge and delete “a copy of data”. By then, they replicated all over the world, they still got you.

dusky plank
#

thats my biggest concern with android, somehow i trust apple more with my information

last plaza
#

Not sure you guys paid attention - if you use chrome and delete all cookies and history (Ctrl + Shift + Delete), it deletes everything but google cookies. There is no easy way to delete google cookies - unless you are an advanced user.

wet pilot
#

Signing out of the browser kills the Google cookies

unreal orbit
#

ctrl + shift + Deere? Vasiley will be so happy

last plaza
#

lol. My mobile! Auto corrects everything I type. 😂

scenic radish
#

my brand!

unreal orbit
#

Yeah I always get hit with yaml > yams and json > Jason

rare condor
#

going to try pihole on my mobile

#

why not ?

wet pilot
#

Should be fine

last plaza
#

Yup

wet pilot
#

Might get some weirdness for some ad heavy apps

dusky plank
#

just... do it!

hushed basalt
#

Anyone using brave browser

rare condor
#

Not doing it router level

scenic radish
#

Don't let your memes be memes

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt sadly yes

wet pilot
#

Why not?

rare condor
#

I use google shopping and ad links all the time

#

it will annoy the crap out of me having to whitelist every single site

last plaza
#

Anyone use dickdickgo?

rare condor
#

its bad enough doing that in ublock

hushed basalt
#

Is chromium any better than chrome

last plaza
#

See... auto correct didn’t correct it 😎

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt Its Chrome without the Google

dusky plank
#

@hushed basalt yes.

hushed basalt
#

I feel like if we can FOSS homeassstant we should be able to make a good FOSS browser

wet pilot
#

@hushed basalt slightly faster. A bit in the future

hushed basalt
#

Hmm should I swap from Chrome

rare condor
#

I'm not a fan of chromium

#

Or Brave

dusky plank
#

maybe worse with media playback but not too far

hushed basalt
#

Try netscape

#

Can't track me now

rare condor
#

I am moving back to IE6

hushed basalt
#

Curl everything

unreal orbit
#

I only search using duckduckgo in tor

rare condor
#

ELITE HACKER

hushed basalt

Offsite

rare condor

on a throwaway computer

hushed basalt
#

Through 7 proxies

rare condor
#

last plaza
#

Tor is owned and operated by CIA.

unreal orbit
#

I actually downloaded the internet so I don't have to be connected to search

dusky plank
#

just today I installed the excellent bitwarden addon, I‘m switching to chromium now too the next days

ocean mirage
#

I tried using ddg but want happy with it

rare condor
#

I use Bing

hushed basalt
#

🤢

rare condor
#

for adult videos ....

#

😛

last plaza
#

Bing search engine so weak.

unreal orbit
#

Bing is... surprisingly good for adult content

rare condor
#

^

hushed basalt
#

Botnet a university or school and use their computers to search everything

#

Every request from a different bot

dusky plank
#

for my trolling activities I use a VPN (freedome/openvpn/tcp) through tor. think this is enough 😄

unreal orbit
#

Tor is such a gamble. Sometimes it's fine, other times it craaaaawls

#

until relaunch

dusky plank
#

yeah, just switch exit nodes every few minutes

last plaza
#

I don’t do anything illegal, so no need for TOR 😝

hushed basalt
#

Double plus good comrade

last plaza
#

lol.

unreal orbit
#

The corporations are illegal, man! They steal our souls, man!

dusky plank
#

me neither, but I don‘t want to get blocked or followed with legal strikes when I troll on my favorite communities 😄

last plaza
#

A simple vpn should suffice.

ocean mirage
#

I don’t do anything illegal
How dull

unreal orbit
#

Not even downloading cars smh

dusky plank
#

meh, the vpn still knows my ip then

rare condor
#

I use to use TOR a lot in High School, then I had to stop because I became an adult and I couldn't use the excuse I am just a kid anymore ... sigh.

hushed basalt
#

We should build our own private WAN

dusky plank
#

I‘m in!

hushed basalt
#

How much does dark fibre cost to lease

dusky plank
#

It‘s free real estate!

last plaza
#

Your private wan going through google? Somewhere someone is watching your traffic and logging.

wet pilot
#

Nothing if you're sneaky enough

rare condor
#

Oh actually thoughts on elon musks sat internet thing, my friend says best thing in history, I am way more doubtful?

hushed basalt
#

Just need to alter the cable records so those strands don't get allocated

#

Mark them as faulty

last plaza
#

He needs 14000 satellites to be fully functional

ocean mirage
#

If it has the name musk on it I’ll criticise it regardless

hushed basalt
#

Satellite internet 🤢

last plaza
#

🤣

unreal orbit
#

Well it's not really comparable to current satellite internet. Mostly because it doesn't exist

rare condor
#

My friend seems to think we'll all have gigabit sat internet by 2025

hushed basalt
#

Fibre is warp drive levels of potential and it's already around the world

rare condor
#

I kind of want to prove him wrong

dusky plank
#

hushed basalt

last plaza
#

My friend seems to think we'll all have gigabit sat internet by 2025
@rare condor May be in Australia. Definitely not in the USA.

dusky plank
#

dammit

unreal orbit
#

1 bit per while

rare condor
#

@last plaza lol noooo way

last plaza
#

There are so many areas they still don’t have Internet. Just drive away from cities, there is dial up.

hushed basalt
#

It's almost as if there's challenges with launching high performance routing hardware into orbit being transmitted with shared spectrums

rare condor
#

Telstra has made our telecom very non - competitive

hushed basalt
#

Better off with weather balloons than satellites

rare condor
#

Google gave up on that project

dusky plank
#

laserlink is still nuts, if this works out - elon is a reptile confirmed

last plaza
#

Not kidding. I have friends who live in farm land, like 10 miles away from city. They don’t have Internet, cable, gas, water and other critical utilities. Gigabit is least of their worries.

rare condor
#

Sounds like the purge out there

hushed basalt
#

What's the altitude of communication satellites

unreal orbit
#

Space

rare condor
#

How do you deal with no water

last plaza
#

They get big ass propane tanks for gas, electricity is there. They use mobile LTE network for internet.

#

They have their own well.

rare condor
#

I normally die when I don't consume water, so I prefer to have water given the option

hushed basalt

last plaza

They are hardly 10 miles outside the city limit. He is a pretty techie guy.

dusky plank
#

I just read sonewhere that download speeds from apple in US are pretty slow, is that really the case? I‘m in germany and it maxes out my fiber connection

hushed basalt
#

ISPs probably restrict apple cdns

last plaza
#

3rd world countries have better internet speeds and mobile networks than USA.

hushed basalt
#

Don't want 50 million people pulling latest macos update at the same time

dusky plank
#

oh ok 😄 you still have cheaper gigabit plans if its available

#

swedish isp Bahnhof gets you 10G for 60$

rare condor
#

I was supposed to get Gigabit but my area was excluded from HFC permitted area, still salty about that

hushed basalt
#

I'm at the library and this AIO kiosk computer on the wall is about to die

#

It's fan is running at max and all its doing is showing a static picture

dusky plank
#

hahaha beautiful

hushed basalt
#

Ha. Buttons are accessible

#

Shutting down

dusky plank
#

rip

hushed basalt
#

Annoys me so much when there's obvious problems and staff never do anything

dusky plank
#

could‘ve used it as a perfect backdoor for our private wan

#

turn it on again, install malware.
do it!

hushed basalt
#

How many gbps can we get through a library AIO with bad thermal paste

dusky plank
#

challenge accepted

hushed basalt
#

They must have copied their thermal design from Apple

scenic radish
#

More like CrApple amirite

rare condor
#

Huh turns out download more ram was a real product: Syncronys SoftRAM

hushed basalt
#

What age did you all first use computers

dusky plank
#

16 or sth

ocean mirage
#

@clear ferry built his first computer at 18 months

#

I imagine somewhere in the realm of 6-8?

hushed basalt
#

He came out of the womb with a serial cable

ocean mirage
#

i have no real clue

hushed basalt
#

I remember using a computer in preschool

static schooner
#

It’s easy when it’s from Fisher Price and the buttons don’t do anything 🙂

hushed basalt
#

I would say I had free reign of a PC from 6

#

I should of got into tech career earlier

rare condor
#

The internet always existed in my lifetime, when I was finishing Primary School Facebook had become popular. I think I first started using a computer when I was just under 3 years old, using Dell computer running Windows 2000

hushed basalt
#

When I was younger i thought you had to go to university to have a tech career

ocean mirage
#

heh

hushed basalt
#

I was 18 when Facebook became popular

ocean mirage
#

I could have a tech career but I think you would call it more of a job

rare condor
#

I was 8 or 9 years old I think

dusky plank
#

you guys need to get back to 28.8 chchhhchchsschshshshpieeeepiepieptschskdhcjjhxhchh modems

scenic radish
#

EEEEEOOOOOOEEEEOOOOEEEEEEOOOOOOOOEEEOOEEOOEEOOO

rare condor
#

Did you guys ever use Eyetop Wearable DVD Player?

hushed basalt
#

Sounds rad

scenic radish
#

"The first wearable DVD player...that no one asked for"

#

"we created a solution to a problem that doesn't exist!"

#

Ngl that's pretty dope tho not dope at all, it only uses one eye

hushed basalt
#

Would fuck with your brain

#

A monitor half an inch from one eye and the real world far away at the same time

#

Eyes aren't designed to be used independently

scenic radish
#

Oh wtf, I didn't even notice it's only one eye

#

DOA

hushed basalt
#

Has anyone ever used VR. Is it any good

ocean mirage
#

upgrade your brain

#

I used VR once at an art exhibition for a 3d work

#

it was fucking sick

dusky plank
#

terminator also just used one eye

its the future

scenic radish
#

Nah but I played call of duty black ops on a 3D TV, that was pretty trippy

hushed basalt
#

Terminator had two eyes though

#

Just one got exposed

rare condor
#

Did you guys own the Nexus Q?

dusky plank
#

gd why you always have to be correct?
for years I thought its just one cyborg eye

scenic radish
#

It's over 9000!!!!!

hushed basalt
#

The whole terminator premise doesn't make much sense

#

A resistance would never survive

#

We'd stand no chance against a hostile AI singularity

rare condor
#

I feel like a Hostile AI that uses humanoid robots in general is not very likely

trail crag
#

it wouldn't even be hostile. just following instructions

hushed basalt

I love how the use the humans as slaves

BUY MORE SENSORS

brazen fable
#

What zwave outlets do you use that work flawlessly

rare condor
hushed basalt
#

What's the R value of a xiaomi aqara sensor

#

If I surface all my walls and ceilings with them

rare condor
#

lol

#

on a side note my insulation is terrible

#

Its loose fill R 1-1.5

#

I want to replace it but its an awful job cleaning it up so just laying batts on top but not ideal

hushed basalt
#

What's your air tightness like though

#

I'd target that first

rare condor
#

Not too bad, but often doors get left open. So I added door sensors which triggered HASS notification when door was left open, but then fam just uninstalled HASS app, then I setup 12v alarm which results in alarm been cut, then I setup a google home notification which resulted in door sensors been removed.

#

Next step is to use epoxy to glue door sensors

hushed basalt
#

Dampers on exhaust fans?

rare condor
#

Yeah installed a Draft Stoppa from Bunnings

hushed basalt
#

Noice

rare condor
#

But only on one fan, the other it won't fit

hushed basalt
#

Combination fan/heater?

rare condor
#

nah its installed under load bearing ceiling joist

#

with 10mm clearence

#

I could try and find a fan that would fit but given its in ensuite not sure its worth hassle

hushed basalt
#

Ceiling vents?

rare condor
#

Air Con Vents

hushed basalt
#

Disconnected?

rare condor
#

Put insulation which I remove in Summer

hushed basalt
#

Ah I see

#

Ducted.

#

Evap?

rare condor
#

nah but its risky as my Aircon controller has a bug in it when I was writing custom firmware to control it

#

its Evap

#

The debouncing on the buttons is not correctly designed and switching on a bathroom fan causes the air con to switch on

#

so I need to be really careful as there is now back pressure which may damage the cooler

#

To explain why this happens is simple the interrupt service routine basically nullifies new inputs after recieving a button press but the EMI from the bathroom fan is enough to cause a registerable 50ns or so pulse which causes the power on ISR to trigger.

#

It was poorly designed it should have required the button to be held for at least 200ms

hushed basalt
#

Yeah debounce is tricky

#

Can you choke the ceiling fan

unreal orbit
#

Homer Simpson style?

rare condor
#

I could but it really just needs better software, issue is its now installed inside a junction box inside my wall in my main hall way which would require cutting holes

#

hmmm... Thinking of buying 10Gigabit for my Home Server 🤔

brazen fable
#

Do it

hushed basalt
#

Intel 550

brazen fable
#

I've run 10gbit for the last 5 years and it's been awesome

hushed basalt
#

I mean to do it

rare condor
#

I was considering that

hushed basalt
#

All my storage is in my NAS though

#

Which is only 2 x 1gbe

rare condor
#

Yeah doing direct to NAS

#

(Home Server)

hushed basalt
#

Synology

Synology sucks :(

Mikrotik switches look amazing

dusky plank

i still use a moca 1gb to coax adapter to my server 😄 no 10g for me

rare condor
#

I thought they looked alright (never used one) at least for newbies to self hosting

#

any reason to use intel 550 over mellanox?

hushed basalt
#

You can get intel for $50 aud shipped

#

Hit up @clear ferry he'll give you a recommendation

unreal orbit

rare condor

Office for me

unreal orbit

Meh, there are plenty of open source/free options for those

rare condor

sure I could use crossover, libreoffice, google docs kingword etc. but none match ms office

hmm... 0.111.3 but no changelog is out

unreal orbit
rare condor

ah, I always looked at blog makes sense

hushed basalt
#

Nothing matches office

#

Same with photoshop etc

ocean mirage
#

whats your reason for wanting to change

rare condor
#

I like using linux, rely mainly on gnu based software and prefer options but ack. the trade off with this choice.

clear ferry
#

You youngling

rare condor
#

@clear ferry Hi 👨‍🌾

#

@clear ferry Thoughts on Mellanox X3 or Intel 550?

hushed basalt
#

My choice is the salty string dsl

scenic radish
hushed basalt
clear ferry
#

Intel is always good, mellanox is ok, but X3 is two generations old

#

Guessing the mellanox is a bit hotter

hushed basalt
#

He can get a 550 for $50AUD or $65 for the mellanox

rare condor
#

I think the intel is fake

clear ferry
#

I'd do the intel then

rare condor
#

also pcie 2.0

hushed basalt
rare condor
#

I was planning to use with Chipset so need PCIE3.0 to maximise lane use

#

The MX311 is available for $25AUD but salvaged from supermicro servers (mezzanine card with PCIE adapter)

hushed basalt
#

Hardware architecture is all black magic to me

clear ferry
#

Both should be pcie3

#

Nc550 isn't intel atleast

#

That is emulex

#

And old

rare condor
hushed basalt
#

It's all so confusing

clear ferry
#

That card is yes

#

But you guys said intel 550

hushed basalt
#

I don't know the different

#

All you pcie people look the same to me

rare condor
#

both have 550 = same

#

bad intel naming 😛

hushed basalt
rare condor
#

ah, Intel X550 starts at $187AUD

#

on ebay

hushed basalt
#

But the guy gets sweet commision on everything

rare condor
#

I think I will get an X3 and pay extra for a legit one rather than mezzanie card with adapter

#

so $60AUD

clear ferry
#

Hpe NIC numbers =
3xx - 1g
5xx - 10g
x3x - broadcom
x4x - mellanox
x5x - emulex
x6x - intel
x7x - solarflare
xx1-7 - revision of card

rare condor
#

this is to upgrade my X2 in my home server as well

thick dragon
#

@rare condor: Just use Office 365 then, works on basically any web browser. Only thing you lose is the advanced Excel functions/addons.

rare condor
#

Yeah loss of VBA in excel is deal breaker due to work :/

clear ferry
#

I work mostly in 365 these days, only desktop app I use is visio

rare condor
#

I will experiment with crossover

thick dragon
#

Probably some form of JS that you could use for 365 😛

rare condor
#

haha fe

hushed basalt
#

What's the power consumption like on that mellanox

#

I might consider it

#

I need 3-4

#

Or I don't bother trying to put 10g in and build a NAS for storage and put 1 good card in there

clear ferry
#

15w ish max

#

With optics, and 10w with DACs

hushed basalt
#

That's 50% of the current consumption of each node haha

clear ferry
#

Those are rookie numbers

hushed basalt
#

You're a rookie number

clear ferry
rare condor

It's not Linux (nor will I switch), you can't just hdparm it

#

There is literally no way to park a hard drive that's not in use besides physically disconnecting SATA power 😐

#

smart sata ports anyone...?

last dirge
#

false

but you do you, boo

dusk lodge
#

how do you do it then?

last dirge

power management

#

that's only been available since forever

dusk lodge
#

That's turn off disk after [x] mins of inactivity

#

It's not "keep it off"

dusk lodge
#

I've read everything about this

#

It'll just restart because some stupid program wants to request a file from it

#

"disable the program" you say

dusky plank
#

even usb sticks are better than sd... and you can boot pi4 from usb

dusk lodge
#

sure, until Windows does it for some reason

#

USB isn't really much better than SD

#

They're both flash

last dirge
#

you can use a USB SSD

dusk lodge
#

maybe

#

SSDs are expensive

#

I'll consider a cheap <120GB SSD if it fails

#

16-64GB should be fine for a Pi

unreal orbit
#

Not really, they're around the same price as SD cards at this point

#

Good luck finding <120GB though

#

that's pretty much as low as they go now

dusk lodge
#

I know it's used but eh

last dirge
#

I got a 1TB nvme drive for like $80

#

not that expensive

You can kinda see the thunderclouds coming now

dusk lodge

#

I need to find a cheap monitor-mode external wifi card

#

What format do y'all route your audio through?

#

My entire audio system works entirely on RCA (although some of it is RCA-to-TRS cables because when have you seen RCA ports on a laptop?)

My ears

clear ferry

Optical mostly, or ARC

unreal orbit
#

Optical

dusk lodge
#

I do actually have a connection between my TV and stereo that's optical

#

but I don't use it because its quiet af

#

and I cannot be bothered to spend money on an amp

#

not yet anyway

#

maybe soon

#

I need to invest in a receiver some day

unreal orbit
#

Having an actual receiver was one of those thing that I didn't know I needed until I had one

dusk lodge
#

opposite here

#

I know I need one, just can't afford one 😖😖

unreal orbit
#

Yeah it's a relatively significant investment

dusk lodge
#

I'd need at least 4x RCA, 4x HDMI 2.0, couple of other ports and IR capability

clear ferry
#

I've never invested more than $600 in a receiver , I'm sane Shrug

dusk lodge
#

$600

👀

unreal orbit

IR 🤣 I don't even know where the remote for my receiver is

dusk lodge
#

I've never ingested more than $200 into audio

Was it tasty?

dusk lodge

My onkyo is smart, it was $450

dusk lodge

unreal orbit

I spent 300 on my onkyo

unreal orbit

and it is "smart"

clear ferry
#

;-)

dusk lodge
#

I can't get a job

#

First of all nobody would hire me because the job market is rubbish

#

Secondly I still go full time school so I couldn't do that many hours a week anyway

#

And thirdly there's still sort of a pandemic

clear ferry
#

I've worked with full time school all my life

unreal orbit
#

"Just get a job" how very boomer of you

clear ferry
#

Until I dropped out because school was presidentsleeper

dusk lodge
#

I have small income from shitty online freelancing but that's not enough to justify buying expensive audio

#

besides I don't actually need a smart receiver as long as it has infrared or rf

#

all I would really need is ON/OFF and being able to set a source
