Some felt it was dull. But they were focusing on more character development and less on space battles

ocean mirage

Yeah which I liked more

#

Would have had more interesting relationships without berman on board too

Dukat was great until he became space devil

#

That all envoy wormhole aliens pai wraith thing should have been cut in the writing room

Yeah that was bad

#

But when up until then

#

Trying to act like the good guy the whole time and then breaking down

#

Rom is the most endearing character though

hushed basalt
#

The cardassian who pretends to be the genocidal general

#

Great episode

#

That's when I knew DS9 was the superior show

#

TNG had nothing like that.

static schooner
#

And superior to all that followed

#

Even Picard hasn’t really grabbed me

ocean mirage
#

I’ve not seen it

#

I’m only up to voyager

static schooner
#

I got truly sick of the characters on Voyager

#

I would have killed myself if I was stranded with those guys

brazen fable
#

Voyager was the best in the series.

#

Fight me

#

Voy > DS9 > TNG > Rest

ocean mirage
#

Voyager has started really strong so far but I’m not far in

#

The only character I truly hate in Trek is Bashir in season one of DS9

brazen fable
#

Lol why.

#

Bashir was a great character.

ocean mirage
#

He was such a creep in season one

brazen fable
#

Creep, or just doesn't interact with people well?

#

Also in Voy once you get past the Kazon arcs it gets really solid.

ocean mirage
#

He seemed like a charicature of Kirk’s creepiness

static schooner
#

Man, I do not get that ranking. To each his own. I did kinda tune out of Voyager after a while, so maybe need to revisit

brazen fable
#

I mean, they're all pretty closely ranked IMO but I really enjoyed how Voyager started out with a story instead of "monster of the week" every episode

#

I'm also a big fan of the BSG reboot]

static schooner
#

Once they were out there, though...

brazen fable
#

TNG's first 2-3 seasons suffered from the MOW syndrome the hardest

static schooner
#

Yeah, I cringe at the beginning for many reasons

brazen fable
#

But the story arcs they did have were pretty good

ocean mirage
#

Yeah voyager starting with direction is a huge plus

brazen fable
#

And honestly, the doctor/seven/janeway are three of the best characters in all of Trek

ocean mirage
#

Best start of any trek I’ve seen

brazen fable
#

Janeway will always be my favorite captain TBH.

static schooner
#

I liked Janeway better in Orange is the new Black 🙂

hushed basalt
#

Janeway was great

#

But I hated voyager

#

Show had berman sleeze all over it

#

Picard was my least favourite show by a long shot

#

Was like a crappy amateur fanfiction tv show that happened to star Stewart

brazen fable
#

Picard is love/hate for me

#

I really hate what they've done with the universe

#

And the political grandstanding is annoying as fuck

#

I loathe what they did with seven too

hushed basalt
#

Old school star trek was never in your face about it

#

And all their messages were timeless and subtle

Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.

When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:

  1. What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
  2. What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
  3. Is the problem uniform or erratic?
  4. What's the exact error message?
  5. When did it arise?
  6. What exactly don't you "get"?
  7. Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?

And probably not here, check the other channels

I'm not one to kinkshame, but that was just surreal, a 200+kg guy walked into the gas station, wearing flip flops atleast 5 sizes too small, and buys a 1L carton of chocolate milk, and leaves

whats wrong with chocolate milk

clear ferry

It was more the way he walked in those flip flops, and the fact that anything at a gas station costs 2-5 more than at a convenience store

@hushed basalt Its hard to believe but these were imported by SolarX and Growatt and marked up by $200. https://www.tradezone.com.au/product/growatt-single-phase-energy-meter-78307.html

You can buy them from here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2044194398.html fully RCM approved and AS3000 compliant. Connects to PLC, ESP8266 or Raspi over RS485 Modbus. Has many alternatives including wireless models and pulse output.

This is the live power consumption of my house: https://pvoutput.org/intraday.jsp?id=84831&sid=76115

forest edge
#

@clear ferry maybe the person prefers small flip flops.. i thought you norwats weren't so judgmental lol

clear ferry
#

I'm usually quite judgemental, but just of redneck muricans 🤣

forest edge
#

oh i see, you have finally come to the shocking realization your own is even more redneck than we "muricans" can be. i see why you would be so confused and taken back now. must be hard to accept lol

hushed basalt
#

@rare condor thank you that's very helpful

#

So are you measuring power going into your house, and measuring generation from your smallboy

#

Or do you have those meters on your inverter too

#

My mum has PV but it's not making a big dent in her bill so I said we need to look at her consumption and generation to figure out what to do next

clear ferry
#

just tell her to buy power from norway

hushed basalt
#

Maybe we'll have HVDC links one day

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt So the meter measures both power entering the meter (consumption) and leaving (generation) so it just needs to be attached in line, between the main breaker and the Circuits. i.e. POWER IN -> MAIN BREAKER -> POWER METER -> CIRCUITS

In the case of solar, the inverter and the Main Breaker are connected: https://photos.app.goo.gl/dVzgpp1C9p68BanBA

#

That's a Fronius Smart Meter, as its an old photo but the wiring is exactly the same for the Eastron SDM230

#

Another option is Solar Analytics, they sell a din mounted meter for $300 plus a yearly subscription which goes against everything I believe, i.e. vendor lock in, cloud based solution, but its popular as its easy and the web interface is apparently decent?

hushed basalt
#

I'd just need someone I can poll with HA or perhaps send directly to a time series DB

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt The cheapest option is open energy monitor with CT clamps if you don't care about compliance.

hushed basalt
#

So what are you doing to measure the gross PV production

#

The energy meter you sent me seems pretty cheap

#

And she has a electrician who can install it cheap

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt All Inverters sold in Australia post 2014 have the Sunspec Protocol which is built upon of Modbus, you can connect an RS485 device like an ESP8266 and it will monitor the output, basically I can figure out consumption from this. I upload it all to PVOutput as it has nice comparison features

#

So best way to do this cheaply is SDM230 -> ESP8266 and Sunspec from Inverter -> ESP8266 and push it all to PVoutput.

#

less than $100 in parts

hushed basalt
#

Did you put a GPO in your meterbox to power the esp8266

rare condor
#

If the Inverter is old and doesn't have Sunspec (i.e. low end model) simply use 2x SDM230 and connect one inline with inverter

hushed basalt
#

She has a SMA i can't remember when it was installed

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt No Regs prohibit ELV in Switchboard without double insulation. I have the pink cable (240v rated CBUS cable) connected to the ESP

hushed basalt
#

I've asked her to send me photos

rare condor
#

CBUS cable is just fancy cat5e

hushed basalt
#

I thought there would be regs about ELV in there

rare condor
#

SMA is decent kit unless its really old it will have sunspec modbus output

hushed basalt
#

It would be 2012-2014

#

Ill find out

rare condor
hushed basalt
#

I'll have to think about a place to mount and power the esp.

#

It's an 1970s house with 4 different levels so the roof structure is a nightmare to access

rare condor
#

ew yeah they are terrible, loose fill insulation? There are other options if you want something better than an ESP, basically anything that does RS485 will work

hushed basalt
#

It's double brick but there's a bedroom above the ground floor where the meterboard is

rare condor
#

But ESP8266 is cheap and actually works well, other options cost $$ like start at $200-300, plus less flexible

hushed basalt
#

So the only way to access the drop is from the top floor roof

#

Afaik

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt Zigbee options exist

#

These aren't sold through electrical wholesalers like middys or lws.

#

If you only care about how much power the Inverter makes just connect the ESP to the SMA Inverter using RS485. If you want consumption it may be PITA, if as you say access is limited, electrian may have to spend time routing cable.

hushed basalt
#

I could just get them to punch through that wall and put a GPO and the cable there

#

Or a seperate enclosure adjacent to the meter

rare condor
#

instead of bothering with a gpo just get one of these: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HDR-15-24-HDR-15-5-HDR-15-12-HDR-15-15-HDR-15-48-MEAN-WELL-DIN-Rail-Power-Supply-/162601741873 and an ip66 enclosure: https://www.jaycar.com.au/polycarbonate-enclosure-with-mounting-flange-base/p/HB6211 (mount next to switchbox with ESP8266 inside) involves no holes in wall, compliant and your still under $100 in parts.

hushed basalt
#

Looks like the inverter can do web or serial with an add on card

rare condor
#

Yeah that's pretty standard

hushed basalt
#

5v output on the din?

rare condor
#

But it won't tell you consumption

#

yep

hushed basalt
#

Yeah i know it won't do consumption but i will need consumption and generation

rare condor
#

Its pretty common practice to use these meanwell power supplies to supply 5v kit

hushed basalt
#

Might just be worth to cough up the dough for a card for the sma if it does error monitoring

rare condor
#

Fair keep in mind you can achieve consumption monitoring with 2x SMD230s

hushed basalt
#

I'll see how much they cost

#

And see how much detail they provide

clear ferry
#

lol extras to just monitor consumption, just use the HAN port of the power meter bois 😉

rare condor
#

Yeah dumb pulse counter and photo doide on meter works too but its illegal in australia

hushed basalt
#

Because it's ELV in the meter?

rare condor
#

No because you don't own the meter, its not your property. I just ignore that though, I have messed with all my meters (i.e. water meter, gas and electricity to enable monitoring) but technically they could fine me for meter tampering and request I pay for new water meter and void house insurance for unlicensed work with NMI approved device.

#

But in terms of ELV in switchboard area, I am sure there is some clause against it, I would have to take a look at AS3000:2018 to get clarity on that.

late gate
#

cant you use pule metering on water and electric so you dont have to tamper with them?

#

if you dont have a HAN interface

rare condor
#

That is considering tampering

#

I know its insane

young sigil
#

That is insane.

clear ferry
#

damn aussies

#

just get smart meters damnit

late gate
#

well they will never know if you just pulse read them. I think the tampering they care about if you cut the wire thingy

rare condor
#

@late gate Generally for electricity your fine if you have a smart meter but gas and water both still use dumb meters in Australia for the most part. So next meter read, you will get in trouble.

late gate
#

@clear ferry I refused to pay hafslund for 3 months cause they didnt open the HAN port just because they broke the law not opening it in time. Just cause I was bored I let them bring it to court and hafslund lost horrible cause they told NVE had given them excemption, but I had an email from the boss in NVE saying they didnt

clear ferry
#

🤣

#

I just opened it a month ago

#

when I finally got my tibber adapter

rare condor
#

BTW HAN Ports are not a global thing: "Norwegian smart meters must have one HAN port"

#

Most here just have pulse output IIRC

late gate
#

@rare condor so I guess its a magnetic meter?

rare condor
#

The gas meter?

hushed basalt
#

Magnet wheel goes burrrr

late gate
#

yes, magnetic thing that turn the numbers

rare condor
#

yes

#

just a magnet on last digit

late gate
#

I really cant see you can get in any trouble using a sensor on that magnet

clear ferry
#

I think we started with automatic metering in 2004ish, then some APIs were avaliable a few years ago, and 2-3 years ago all meters in norway were replaced with smart meters

late gate
#

in old times here people unscrew the meters put them sideways and put a big magnet so it would not turn. thats a bit more on the bad side

rare condor
#

@late gate It defined as a Hazardous Zone , no electricity can be present with out an Audit

clear ferry
#

had a collegue connect his VAX 7000 to the input before the meter

#

that was good times

rare condor
#

even 5v

late gate
#

they will never find out I would say, just demount if they want to check

rare condor
#

again, its about how game you are but in my case I know someone who has got in trouble for doing this, using a reed switch to read gas usgae

late gate
#

I would not worry at least

#

how far apart can power be?

rare condor
#

In Australia our Regulations are licenced by SAI Global and are not freely accessible unless you are a licensed plumber and they refuse to say. But in any case if it is near the meter it requires an audit.

#

I think its under scope of AS/NZS 4944:2006 (R2017) Gas meters - In-service compliance testing

late gate
#

so whats they worst thing that can happen if you just mount a reed meter to it with some tape and dont tamper with it

rare condor
#

Fines for meter tampering and if you refuse to pay loss of service. Even if you are correct that a reed switch has no affect.

#

Its dumb and I have argued this before

#

But again depends how game you are.

late gate
#

I would still just do it unless it require opening it

rare condor
#

I gambled and went ahead on water meter

#

we will see what happens next meter read

late gate
#

if I got caught just do as on cops. "what? Its not even my house, I dont know how that got there"

rare condor
#

lol haha

#

That's the addition (official unit supplied by Itron)

#

hopefully wont end up in jail 😛

late gate
#

I think worst thing that will happen is you are told to remove it unless you clip anything, open anything or change anything

#

its even sold commercial water and gas readers like smappee

#

that does this

#

I use that on water

#

@clear ferry give me one good reason why i should use google voice and not alexa when I reset my smart home. I got both, but just using alexa now. any benefits?

rare condor
#

Fair point

#

Alexa has so little presence in Australia we only got Amazon in 2017. Alexa is not popular at all.

clear ferry
#

I don't use it activly for much

late gate

@rare condor I prefer that google is a bit more accurate on replies, but I hate saying ok google. just saying alexa feels more natural

late gate

automations for controlling lights

late gate

rare condor

Yeah I bought a watch repair kit and replaced the mechanism, this was in 2016 so I'm not sure where I sourced it from

I don't think so, IIRC I disassembled the latch but eBay history isn't helping here 🤷‍♂️

hushed basalt

The Audi A8 had solar panels in the sunroof from 98 I think that could start ventilation of the car if needed
@clear ferry did it roll down all the windows so someone would have an easier time stealing it? lol

Hello guys! Not HASS related but I thought you could help me. So, I'm thinking about buying a second hand HP Prodesk 600 g2 SFF (i3-6100 version) for openmediavault/plex (mostly direct play, ocasional transcodes), but I'm worried about power consumption. What do you think would be the idle consumption and load consumption keeping in mind that I'd only transcode ocasionally so most of the time it will be direct play.

clear ferry
#

@forest edge it just opened the sunroof I think haha

Vaguely modern computers idle in pretty lower power states @frozen swan - don't worry about it too much, but details on it should be published

Depending on where and how you live, a 100w difference is negligible too

No as in what hardware

ocean mirage
#

xeon E5-2670 in a big ol gigabyte dual socket board

#

had two in there for a bit

#

its not going to be crazy high numbers, just high idle compared to newer things

hushed basalt
#

What do you all think about all-in-one router and server for parents

#

I was thinking of getting an medium sized optiplex for my mum to run HA

#

And figured I could put proxmox on it and run opnsense as well

ocean mirage
#

I don't like the idea of it

#

while I have many eggs in one basket I wouldn't put my network in the same basket

#

network should be separate and easy to troubleshoot, imo

#

and old people need something they can just unplug and plug back in lol

hushed basalt
#

She would have no idea what to do with either a simple router or a single box she plugs into the fttp

#

So she'd be relying on me entirely

#

Plus there's the old router still there as a backup

#

I'll think about it. I can always change it later. Only sunken cost is a NIC

ocean mirage
#

ah fair enough

#

if it works then its nice

hushed basalt
#

Optiplexs are hard to beat

#

$260 shipped from Australia with i5, 8gb and 128gb ssd

#

Will probably idle at 15w and can fit 3 x sata drives

ocean mirage
#

nice

hushed basalt
#

1 x 3.5" and 2 x 2.5" jammed in there

#

And 2 x pcie slots and internal power supply

#

Wayyyyy better than a NUC

ocean mirage
#

for sure

hushed basalt
#

It'll need to do some NVR duties as well

ocean mirage
#

I've been meaning to do that since I moved in but havent yet, 15 months later

#

im not so fussed anymore

hushed basalt
#

It's worthwhile

#

Even if you put surveillance microsd cards in the cameras themselves

#

I doubt most junkies will rip cameras off ceilings to pull cards out

ocean mirage
#

I'd probably get a dedicated 8TB or two for footage storage if I did it, separate to my main unraid array

hushed basalt
#

Yeah don't use unraid for it

ocean mirage
#

since I would use PoE anyway

hushed basalt
#

I'd just get one drive if you want to chance it

ocean mirage
#

well it'll be on my unraid server but not using its storage because that could be problems

hushed basalt
#

The likelyhood of your drive failing while simultaneously getting robbed are low

#

Yeah that's what I meant

ocean mirage
#

and ill use a separate ethernet port for the cameras too

#

try separate as much I can

hushed basalt
#

Just means you're churning vlan routing bandwidth for video

ocean mirage
#

hmm

brazen fable
#

If you have real network hardware it won't be an issue

#

just get 10gig switch.

#

they're cheap and do the job

hushed basalt
#

Most 10g have crappy l3 unless you go really expensive

brazen fable
#

even if you don't use the sfp+ the routing capacity is there

#

There really isn't much usecase for L3 in a home

#

nothing a decent router can't handle anyway

dusky plank
#

there‘s also a opnsense for rpi3, not official though

brazen fable
#

woo only 12.6 tb left to upload

ocean mirage
#

I'm not great at networking, if I ever did it I'd just see how it went

#

but I am really not fussed on cameras

#

maybe one day when I have more free $$$

hushed basalt
#

I would just put them on the same subnet but blacklist them from dialling home

ocean mirage
#

I'll seek advice when I am at that stage I guess, I have so many things I'd spend on at home first

brazen fable
#

nah different subnets are a good idea

#

there are other benefits like reduce broadcast traffic etc

#

and no inter-connection between devices

#

1 compromised device can seek out and exploit other devices on the network. This would prevent that

#

and it's really simple to just put things on different subnets nowadays

scenic radish
#

Separate subnets doesn't immediately prevent communication though

#

With firewall rules, yes

brazen fable
#

Depends on the firewall

#

There's no point in a separate subnet if you allow them to communicate

#

unless you've run out of ipv4 addresses i suppose

scenic radish
#

Well yeah. Just didn't want someone to think separate subnet == no comms between them

brazen fable
#

Actually without seperate subnets im pretty close to filling a /24 lol

scenic radish
#

Wtf

brazen fable
#

30 addresses just for cameras, and then tons of VMS

#

I have indoor and outdoor cams. Indoor cams are generally off, but automatically turn on when I leave and set the alarm to away mode

#

😄

scenic radish
#

I am nowhere close to filling a /24 especially with having a separate IoT VLAN

#

And guest VLAN, for that matter

brazen fable
#

yeh i have a guest vlan with a portal

scenic radish
#

You using 10/24 subnet?

brazen fable
#

no

scenic radish
#

But it's so pretty

brazen fable
#

I've been using 192 my entire life and I've got so many things just memorized

scenic radish
#

Yeah that's fair

brazen fable
#

like my personal rig will always be .100

#

server will always be .102

scenic radish
#

Ah, mine's 10.0.0.2

brazen fable
#

and if i ever switch back to a comcast modem i don't want any fuckery with their shit

#

because they use the 10. now

#

Thank goodness for zwave

#

I couldn't imagine having all my smarthome stuff as IP

dusky plank
#

how do you guys deal with a site-to-site vpn and the same subnets?

brazen fable
#

don't use the same subnet?

hushed basalt
#

Change subnet haha

brazen fable
#

just use a different subnet for the VPN and allow intra-vlan for those two nets

dusky plank
#

yep thats why I use 10.0.57

brazen fable
#

my wiregaurd is 10.0 yeh

hushed basalt
#

I think we're a fair way off from ipv6 ubiquitiy

brazen fable
#

Honestly I don't even want my devices to have ipv6 ever

hushed basalt
#

It's a bit convoluted and I don't really understand much of it

brazen fable
#

I just don't see the use for it, and for personal stuff ipv4 is just so much easier to work with than e3042:2342:234@:#41@:#$

scenic radish
#

Well, ipv4 is nice for LAN to LAN comms

#

But ipv6 is nice for WAN

brazen fable
#

NAT works fine.

scenic radish
#

Yeah, but we've run out of ipv4 lol

#

And CG-NAT is gross

brazen fable
#

oh yeah that's what you mean

#

IPv6 for the main WAN but IPv4 for everything else

#

and fuck CG-NAT

scenic radish
#

I access my remote services over ipv6 to NGINX which proxy_pass to the LAN ipv4 addys

hushed basalt
#

Kubernetes doesn't support dual stack

dusky plank
#

I‘m supposed to have a dynamic adress for my residential line from my ISP, but it‘s been static the last five years and my isp doesn‘t even provide ipv6... so I guess we‘re not out of adresses yet 😄

#

ftth though

hushed basalt
#

Static is $10/m for me

#

I just use dynamic dns

brazen fable
#

Comcast residential doesn't even offer static

#

I use no-ip yeh

#

with my own domain

hushed basalt
#

Same

#

Has never failed me

scenic radish
#

I just use ipv6

brazen fable
#

i have 2 different subdomains pointing

hushed basalt
#

I don't think ipv6 isn't a guarantee that your prefix will never change

brazen fable
#

I really hope things swing back to normal soon because I think I'm going to try to get comcast gigabit pro installed again

#

sweet sweet 3gbps symmetrical

dusky plank
#

hah pay for static 😂 knocks on wood

brazen fable
#

my ip rarely changes, but it does

#

once every 6months or so

scenic radish
#

@hushed basalt should be, there's no reason for the prefix to change

#

But I do have a cronjob update my AAAA record in case

hushed basalt
#

There's no reason but your isp could get bought out or change their stack

#

As long as you've got a fallback

scenic radish
#

Yeah and if I switch ISPs I suppose

#

I do run dual stack though. I have an A record with my ipv4 WAN IP

dusky plank
#

i actually have 2 Wans because I don‘t trust my ISPs fiber modem... I also access everything in my Lan via reverse proxy in between the modem and my router... am I paranoid? maybe

scenic radish
#

Li'l

hushed basalt
#

Your modem is on the wan side
