Some felt it was dull. But they were focusing on more character development and less on space battles
Yeah which I liked more
Would have had more interesting relationships without berman on board too
Dukat was great until he became space devil
That all envoy wormhole aliens pai wraith thing should have been cut in the writing room
Yeah that was bad
But when up until then
Trying to act like the good guy the whole time and then breaking down
Rom is the most endearing character though
The cardassian who pretends to be the genocidal general
Great episode
That's when I knew DS9 was the superior show
TNG had nothing like that.
I got truly sick of the characters on Voyager
I would have killed myself if I was stranded with those guys
Voyager has started really strong so far but I’m not far in
The only character I truly hate in Trek is Bashir in season one of DS9
He was such a creep in season one
Creep, or just doesn't interact with people well?
Also in Voy once you get past the Kazon arcs it gets really solid.
He seemed like a charicature of Kirk’s creepiness
Man, I do not get that ranking. To each his own. I did kinda tune out of Voyager after a while, so maybe need to revisit
I mean, they're all pretty closely ranked IMO but I really enjoyed how Voyager started out with a story instead of "monster of the week" every episode
I'm also a big fan of the BSG reboot]
Once they were out there, though...
TNG's first 2-3 seasons suffered from the MOW syndrome the hardest
Yeah, I cringe at the beginning for many reasons
But the story arcs they did have were pretty good
Yeah voyager starting with direction is a huge plus
And honestly, the doctor/seven/janeway are three of the best characters in all of Trek
Best start of any trek I’ve seen
Janeway will always be my favorite captain TBH.
I liked Janeway better in Orange is the new Black 🙂
Janeway was great
But I hated voyager
Show had berman sleeze all over it
Picard was my least favourite show by a long shot
Was like a crappy amateur fanfiction tv show that happened to star Stewart
Picard is love/hate for me
I really hate what they've done with the universe
And the political grandstanding is annoying as fuck
I loathe what they did with seven too
Old school star trek was never in your face about it
And all their messages were timeless and subtle
Disco is all FEEL GUILTY BOI
Like the guys with their faces literally painted half white and half black?
Yeah like when Rom quoted Marx, pure subtlety 🙂
ah yes, references
I never watched TOS haha
Don’t
Don't
Old school to me is 90s
C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER
I never actually watched ST when it aired
I got through two episodes of ToS until I decided naaah
Good choice
I saw all of it
It makes it cool when the characters shows up in tng but that’s about it
The AI upscaling thing is definitely great. Another reason that the nVidia Shield is the most superior media player around.
Biggest thing I hate about Disco is it's all main character mary sue
Like DS9 and even TNG didn't revolve entirely around one character
Name a single disco episode that works without whats her face angry girl
Someone stop Tediore
Hey I'm new here, what's up guys?
Let’s test him
I'm somewhat of a meme myself
https://media.tenor.com/images/06596865594e06db1bcf1945b6945605/tenor.gif
I thought we were watching Scooby Doo!
What are you people dojng
@wet pilot everyone needs a hype man like that guy
lol yes
Ultimate hype man here: https://v.redd.it/un9ly9zrqby31
meme/gif chat
Sonarrv3 looks awesome
there's a new one?
Yeah it's in beta
but it's 'stablish'
Accessibility is pretty average though
That contrast :/
looks like linuxserver doesn't have the new one yet
They do

You have much to learn little Padawan
@rare condor What sort of setup are you using for monitoring import/export of power
Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.
When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:
- What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
- What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
- Is the problem uniform or erratic?
- What's the exact error message?
- When did it arise?
- What exactly don't you "get"?
- Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?
And probably not here, check the other channels

I'm not one to kinkshame, but that was just surreal, a 200+kg guy walked into the gas station, wearing flip flops atleast 5 sizes too small, and buys a 1L carton of chocolate milk, and leaves

whats wrong with chocolate milk
It was more the way he walked in those flip flops, and the fact that anything at a gas station costs 2-5 more than at a convenience store
lmao
His heels were like 5cm off the edge of them
And you couldn't see his two smallest toes
But he was alone in the car
On a freeway gas station

Lol 8km of queues to enter Denmark
They opened for tourists today
So github is removing "master" "whitelist" and "blacklist" now because of all this bullshit
@hushed basalt Its hard to believe but these were imported by SolarX and Growatt and marked up by $200. https://www.tradezone.com.au/product/growatt-single-phase-energy-meter-78307.html
You can buy them from here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2044194398.html fully RCM approved and AS3000 compliant. Connects to PLC, ESP8266 or Raspi over RS485 Modbus. Has many alternatives including wireless models and pulse output.
This is the live power consumption of my house: https://pvoutput.org/intraday.jsp?id=84831&sid=76115
@clear ferry maybe the person prefers small flip flops.. i thought you norwats weren't so judgmental lol
oh i see, you have finally come to the shocking realization your own is even more redneck than we "muricans" can be. i see why you would be so confused and taken back now. must be hard to accept lol
@rare condor thank you that's very helpful
So are you measuring power going into your house, and measuring generation from your smallboy
Or do you have those meters on your inverter too
My mum has PV but it's not making a big dent in her bill so I said we need to look at her consumption and generation to figure out what to do next
just tell her to buy power from norway
Maybe we'll have HVDC links one day
@hushed basalt So the meter measures both power entering the meter (consumption) and leaving (generation) so it just needs to be attached in line, between the main breaker and the Circuits. i.e. POWER IN -> MAIN BREAKER -> POWER METER -> CIRCUITS
In the case of solar, the inverter and the Main Breaker are connected: https://photos.app.goo.gl/dVzgpp1C9p68BanBA
That's a Fronius Smart Meter, as its an old photo but the wiring is exactly the same for the Eastron SDM230
Another option is Solar Analytics, they sell a din mounted meter for $300 plus a yearly subscription which goes against everything I believe, i.e. vendor lock in, cloud based solution, but its popular as its easy and the web interface is apparently decent?
I'd just need someone I can poll with HA or perhaps send directly to a time series DB
@hushed basalt The cheapest option is open energy monitor with CT clamps if you don't care about compliance.
So what are you doing to measure the gross PV production
The energy meter you sent me seems pretty cheap
And she has a electrician who can install it cheap
@hushed basalt All Inverters sold in Australia post 2014 have the Sunspec Protocol which is built upon of Modbus, you can connect an RS485 device like an ESP8266 and it will monitor the output, basically I can figure out consumption from this. I upload it all to PVOutput as it has nice comparison features
So best way to do this cheaply is SDM230 -> ESP8266 and Sunspec from Inverter -> ESP8266 and push it all to PVoutput.
less than $100 in parts
Did you put a GPO in your meterbox to power the esp8266
If the Inverter is old and doesn't have Sunspec (i.e. low end model) simply use 2x SDM230 and connect one inline with inverter
She has a SMA i can't remember when it was installed
@hushed basalt No Regs prohibit ELV in Switchboard without double insulation. I have the pink cable (240v rated CBUS cable) connected to the ESP
I've asked her to send me photos
CBUS cable is just fancy cat5e
I thought there would be regs about ELV in there
SMA is decent kit unless its really old it will have sunspec modbus output
I'll have to think about a place to mount and power the esp.
It's an 1970s house with 4 different levels so the roof structure is a nightmare to access
ew yeah they are terrible, loose fill insulation? There are other options if you want something better than an ESP, basically anything that does RS485 will work
It's double brick but there's a bedroom above the ground floor where the meterboard is
But ESP8266 is cheap and actually works well, other options cost $$ like start at $200-300, plus less flexible
@hushed basalt Zigbee options exist
Integrate your Meazon MEAZON_DINRAIL via Zigbee2mqtt with whatever smart home infrastructure you are using without the vendors bridge or gateway.
These aren't sold through electrical wholesalers like middys or lws.
If you only care about how much power the Inverter makes just connect the ESP to the SMA Inverter using RS485. If you want consumption it may be PITA, if as you say access is limited, electrian may have to spend time routing cable.
I could just get them to punch through that wall and put a GPO and the cable there
Or a seperate enclosure adjacent to the meter
instead of bothering with a gpo just get one of these: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HDR-15-24-HDR-15-5-HDR-15-12-HDR-15-15-HDR-15-48-MEAN-WELL-DIN-Rail-Power-Supply-/162601741873 and an ip66 enclosure: https://www.jaycar.com.au/polycarbonate-enclosure-with-mounting-flange-base/p/HB6211 (mount next to switchbox with ESP8266 inside) involves no holes in wall, compliant and your still under $100 in parts.
Looks like the inverter can do web or serial with an add on card
Yeah that's pretty standard
5v output on the din?
Yeah i know it won't do consumption but i will need consumption and generation
Its pretty common practice to use these meanwell power supplies to supply 5v kit
Might just be worth to cough up the dough for a card for the sma if it does error monitoring
Fair keep in mind you can achieve consumption monitoring with 2x SMD230s
lol extras to just monitor consumption, just use the HAN port of the power meter bois 😉
Yeah dumb pulse counter and photo doide on meter works too but its illegal in australia
Because it's ELV in the meter?
No because you don't own the meter, its not your property. I just ignore that though, I have messed with all my meters (i.e. water meter, gas and electricity to enable monitoring) but technically they could fine me for meter tampering and request I pay for new water meter and void house insurance for unlicensed work with NMI approved device.
But in terms of ELV in switchboard area, I am sure there is some clause against it, I would have to take a look at AS3000:2018 to get clarity on that.
cant you use pule metering on water and electric so you dont have to tamper with them?
if you dont have a HAN interface
That is insane.
Any cost incurred for GTS services will be passed directly onto the applicant.```
well they will never know if you just pulse read them. I think the tampering they care about if you cut the wire thingy
http://www.electricbrain.com.au/pages/gas-meter-pulse-output.php This is someone who wanted to put a Reed switch under his Gas meter for monitoring. He was using vendors official product too
@late gate Generally for electricity your fine if you have a smart meter but gas and water both still use dumb meters in Australia for the most part. So next meter read, you will get in trouble.
@clear ferry I refused to pay hafslund for 3 months cause they didnt open the HAN port just because they broke the law not opening it in time. Just cause I was bored I let them bring it to court and hafslund lost horrible cause they told NVE had given them excemption, but I had an email from the boss in NVE saying they didnt
BTW HAN Ports are not a global thing: "Norwegian smart meters must have one HAN port"
Most here just have pulse output IIRC
@rare condor so I guess its a magnetic meter?
The gas meter?
Magnet wheel goes burrrr
yes, magnetic thing that turn the numbers
I really cant see you can get in any trouble using a sensor on that magnet
I think we started with automatic metering in 2004ish, then some APIs were avaliable a few years ago, and 2-3 years ago all meters in norway were replaced with smart meters
in old times here people unscrew the meters put them sideways and put a big magnet so it would not turn. thats a bit more on the bad side
@late gate It defined as a Hazardous Zone , no electricity can be present with out an Audit
had a collegue connect his VAX 7000 to the input before the meter
that was good times
even 5v
they will never find out I would say, just demount if they want to check
again, its about how game you are but in my case I know someone who has got in trouble for doing this, using a reed switch to read gas usgae
In Australia our Regulations are licenced by SAI Global and are not freely accessible unless you are a licensed plumber and they refuse to say. But in any case if it is near the meter it requires an audit.
I think its under scope of AS/NZS 4944:2006 (R2017) Gas meters - In-service compliance testing
so whats they worst thing that can happen if you just mount a reed meter to it with some tape and dont tamper with it
Fines for meter tampering and if you refuse to pay loss of service. Even if you are correct that a reed switch has no affect.
Its dumb and I have argued this before
But again depends how game you are.
I would still just do it unless it require opening it
if I got caught just do as on cops. "what? Its not even my house, I dont know how that got there"
lol haha
That's the addition (official unit supplied by Itron)
hopefully wont end up in jail 😛
I think worst thing that will happen is you are told to remove it unless you clip anything, open anything or change anything
its even sold commercial water and gas readers like smappee
that does this
I use that on water
@clear ferry give me one good reason why i should use google voice and not alexa when I reset my smart home. I got both, but just using alexa now. any benefits?
Fair point
Alexa has so little presence in Australia we only got Amazon in 2017. Alexa is not popular at all.
I don't use it activly for much
@rare condor I prefer that google is a bit more accurate on replies, but I hate saying ok google. just saying alexa feels more natural
we had access to amazon well before then
its just a more localised one in 2017 I guess
Yes, I wish I could make a new triggerword for google
I'll admit I was impressed using homepod, Local control is so fast, its already turned the light on before you have time to think
Hey google feels very... unnatural for me
I only use my google home devices for notifications and music streaming anyway
if I could use my own codeword I would use it for more probably
what do you use for controlling lights etc
I dont use google just cause of the trigger word
alexa does what I ask though. color lights, modes, timers etc
automations for controlling lights
yeah, but I use the good night and good morning
good night arm alarm, turn on night mode, letting me know if I forgot a door, start the hover etc
I still dont have a properly reliable way of presence detection so automations is not always that reliable
where do you find the presence detection unreliable ?
with motion detectors in general (the classical eyes)
I was thinking using ble
but that require everyone to wear something
oh, I use motion detection for three rooms, and contact sensors on the doors for a few rooms
or have a phone on them
but if someone forget their phone?
making my old alarm system into a esp based motion detection for the remaining rooms soon
glue bluetooth trackers to the back of their heads while they sleep 😛
I might got an acceptance for a mi band, that expose ble
that last for a month without charging
then I can room track
yeah its actually a nice device too
bought a mi scale. they make good products. sends the weight to ha automatically
I use a mix of PIR sensors, cameras with face detection (not in rooms) only living spaces and outdoors and ble + ubiquiti device presence
Which miband is that
I need a new watch
Citizen wanted $450 to replace the latch on a $500 watch
xiaomi mi band 4
oh me too are you using this: https://hub.docker.com/r/lolouk44/xiaomi-mi-scale
get a different latch?
ah I almost went that route but had a spare pi running wireguard so opted against yet another device for single use
It's a titanium band I need their specific model
They through some bullshit about bands not being covered under warranty too and I couldn't be bothered fighting it
Yeah it's bullshit
Their warranty specifically states wear
Which i interpret as scratches etc
The Xiaomi Amazfit Bip is great
I have 35 days battery life
but I'm thinking of getting one of the nicer ones
My watch has a capacitor in it and PV cell in the face
So lasts forever, in theory
They wanted to charge me $600 AUD for a $400 watch 🤔
I'm not sure how much mine cost
My wife bought it
But they wanted $450-$500 irrc
I love eco drive watches, I started a collection after I felt guilty for losing my 18th Birthday gift on a flight to Malaysia
However much a titanium ecodrive watch costs from a jewelry store
its about the same
Did you end up seeing if a generic repairer could source the parts and fix it
Need to take it to HK they'd probably do it for 50 HKD all in
I fixed it myself
How did you fix it
When you say the latch is broken do you mean it no longer clips together and unlatches instantly?
Yeah I bought a watch repair kit and replaced the mechanism, this was in 2016 so I'm not sure where I sourced it from
I ended up trying to fix my sisters watch as well and shattered the Glass 😬, I used a vice clamp with a microfibre cloth
did not end well
do anyone know if it exist a turtoise tensorflow model?
So you sourced the latch bit separately
It looks impossible to open. Looks factory pressed
I don't think so, IIRC I disassembled the latch but eBay history isn't helping here 🤷♂️
As in you didn't replace any components?
Ecodrive has a pretty extensive range (literally hundreds so could be different), not that I can recall, do you have a photo of the latch?
I'll take one tomorrow.
👍
But it looks like a sheet of steel has been rolled around the part that holds the springs
Look similar: https://photos.app.goo.gl/tYE4XyeJr47bLmXP7
@rare condor yeah the same mechanism
lol trying to update an offline wsus server
3800 patches were missing and had to be downloaded
still waiting, currently it has downloaded 150GB
wonder how much is left, who knows because wsus sucks
Vulnerabilities happened
More vulnerable than a server missing 3800 patches ? :D
when it's a darksite, they aren't that critical, but usually more interesting for bug fixes etc
🤣
Looking for a project/device I've heard in a few youtube videos
Open source sonoff mini/shell 1 clone using D1 mini
Thats where remote start works wonders 🙂
just wish I could bypass the start count or time length
No remote start on my 2005
You are in a HACKING group, hack one together!
The Audi A8 had solar panels in the sunroof from 98 I think that could start ventilation of the car if needed
That was nice
Found what I was looking for, BHonofre
Fans should have umbrellas that self deploy when they're in the sun
Why did I say fans
I mean cars
Teething toddlers mess with your sleep brain good
Reaction video, no thanks necessary, I own nothing, and all that.

"earthquakes"
I have the opposite problem. The bed always slides to the middle of the room
... because... California has a lot of earthquakes...
this isn't #the-water-cooler-after-dark guys
?
@scenic radish It is so annoying when the earthquake hits
I think it is genius!
Move to somewhere that doesn't have earthquakes. Problem solved 🎉
The earthquake part is probably a startup marketing strategy to get funding from investors
Do you really need funding for a bolt with some rubber and tape on it?
No, but you do for the fancy cars
Damn
I have to say
HA is literally faster than the LIFX app in switching off my lights...
LIFX seems to favour cloud for some reason
is there any advantage to linking your router's upnp to ha?

The Audi A8 had solar panels in the sunroof from 98 I think that could start ventilation of the car if needed
@clear ferry did it roll down all the windows so someone would have an easier time stealing it? lol
Hello guys! Not HASS related but I thought you could help me. So, I'm thinking about buying a second hand HP Prodesk 600 g2 SFF (i3-6100 version) for openmediavault/plex (mostly direct play, ocasional transcodes), but I'm worried about power consumption. What do you think would be the idle consumption and load consumption keeping in mind that I'd only transcode ocasionally so most of the time it will be direct play.
Vaguely modern computers idle in pretty lower power states @frozen swan - don't worry about it too much, but details on it should be published
Depending on where and how you live, a 100w difference is negligible too
Normal Operation (Short idle) 15.71 W / Normal Operation (Long idle) 13.86 W
Found this on the specs pdf
in accordance with us energy star test method
Right now my house is pulling 5.5kw, if I had a sff computer I wouldn't notice it
10689 max 😬
That would be while cooking dinner
yes makes sense
I did some math and if the PC was constantly running at 70W 24/7 It'd be 90,39€ at the end of the year
but It shouldnt reach 70W most of the times right? Even when transcoding, how much would the i3-6100 suck up?

the 80's and 90's one looks about right

Quick chime in, home assistant is freaking amazing
What the hell how did i not find this earier
Earlier*
Built my first entry level home server just to run this stuff, my pi is weak
Pi 🤢
Here i was, thinking pi was anywhere near viable to handle the cool stuff
Have the pi4 but I wanted my UniFi controller, pi-hole, homebridge and homeassistant on one device
Too many services, one point of failure.
So i just went ahead and built my own mini server to run VMs in. Im freaking clueless but i’m having a blast
Yeah, but you have access to the kind of kit that most of us don't - at least not without spending serious money
Pff, the dual pentium pro I had in 2003 I begged to have from the local hospital when they were throwing it out
Put some effort in!
Awwww yeah
I carried that monster into my parents attic
Dual ppro 180 with 512MB ram
I really don't understand how that annoying banner is a "premium" feature
¯_(ツ)_/¯
BOO VLYCOP, BOO
oh it make confetti when i move my cursor over the pink gem
why ! last time i was flooded with do it meme, and now i get boo ! 😆 They won't be a next time anyway i got this month for free :P
Well I've sort of figured out how to emulate a Chromecast I guess
Its good enough for now
Damned if you do, damned if you don't @fiery sorrel 😂
Emulate a chromecast? Why?
@unreal orbit I want to be able to cast to my monitor
Does this involve duct tape in any way
rubber band ?
But the catch is well, I want to actually cast to the desktop, not just the monitor in general
I have one automation that's pretty much pure duct tape and rubber bands. I'm almost proud of how disgusting it is
I have a gross double-script automation that gradually transitions the volume on one of my speakers down to 0
Figured out how to do it in a different way than I was expecting but basically, I have a rule where on youtube.com/tv# (and only that url) it will send a Sony Bravia or something userstring because otherwise it just tells you it's not a TV
I have TTS automations immediately followed by spotcast, I've yet to figure out how to stop it going "good morni-" and being cut of 25% of the time 🤣
Then you pair it once with your account, and as long as you have YouTube.com/tv# open, it'll act as a Cast receiver in that tab
#automations-archived for moar
Yup haha, not asking for help just moaning about my own duct tape automations haha
Oh I know you weren't @pine pond just letting you know I'd gladly offer solutions there if you wanted
oh the downside is it seems to be limited to 720p for some odd reason
which I might need to check out
Nah, then I'll lose the fun of spending 5 hours troubleshooting 🤣
I think it pulls the Chrome tab's resolution rather than Chrome's actual resolution
Heh
i never got cast to work with my avahi proxy, so i didn't even look at it
now if only I could use a remote with this...
I guess I could use a normal remote for Windows like Universal Remote, but emulating an Android TV would be even cooler
i think my harmony could controle youtube tv, or the android tv app might have some api somewhere
I kept thinking when talking in the other channels "gosh I wish there was an off-topic channel, I really just want to talk about random stuff"
... and then realised when I joined the server I hid all the channels I didn't care for at the time 😅
lol
@clever mortar found your cup
Thanks for making me look that up on wikipedia. I always wondered about the name of those biscuits.
Apparently, they do have a medical origin.
If you can, Inside The Factory had an episode that covered it
I've just found out, 2 years since owning it, that my motherboard does actually have controllable lighting built into it
Lmao
There's a yellow strip that goes down the left side of the board (b360hd3), but even in BIOS settings you can't really edit it
after downloading RGB Fusion 2.0 turns out there's on | breathe | off settings, but you are stuck at an unchangeable brightness and it is always yellow
that covered it
@clever mortar How is it called ? i mean the biscuit :)
interesting to learn though
Digestive
oh those !
i never though it had more than the name... i'll look it up :)
when i see a sea of biscuit like that, on a convoyer belt ... just wayting for me ... 🤤
you have to be quite sadistic to make kid show about java anyway ... so it make sense you don't find any :°
Computer components are like Tediore. They should be locked away in a metal box with no windows and kept out of sight.
It would drive me insane having lights coming from inside my case
> assuming my life isn't already like that
I feel you @hushed basalt and here I have RGB dimms 🤢
Did you say sinks first
Auto correct
Should have said no :D
My motherboard has a white led trace on it
But my case is fully enclosed unless you peak through the rear fan grill
That reminds me I need to replace one of my fans
But it's winter so meh
Every side of mine is someway open
🤢
Either I wait or sell the dimms - didn't checked Mainboard compability so I only can use 2100 from 3200 mhz
4KB ram should be enough for you
Ehh it seems fine tbh
$200 AUD for 4 x 8GB
Dude wtf
It's so nice - i almost never had to pay import taxes. Really loving ali
AliExpress is not a bad idea
I'll have to wait like 2 days but I'm patient
2 months...
Yea :D no shit. Was worried as hell first
Can that run pihole tho
Americans always get the best flavors
Tried beef jerky in USA
Loved it
Wanted to buy it here
Its literally 5-6 as expensive as in usa

Did i assume wrong? Huehue
No i mean
Beef jerky itself
I randomly thought of usa perks
Beef jerky #1 obviously
I think it was Jack Links Peppered flavor that was absolute amazing
Yeah that is bomb man
I was on Hawai which is still way more expensive than mainland i think
But I ate so much of it
Probably
Oof
There’s some ‘dUtCh mAdE bEeF jErKy’ here
But cant beat jack links
You guys also get affordable parts for literally anythijg
Feelsbadman
It's like 5 or 6 USD for a 3 oz (90 g) pack of Jack links beef jerky. Pretty expensive but worth it
Let me look up what thatd cost me
10-12 USD for the 10 oz (285 g) pack
100g will cost me ~30 USD
In my effort to actually use the metric system more I know that one fluid oz is about 30 mL and one ounce is about 28 g
30 USD??? Wtf man
Oh no wait
Its like
18 ISD
USD
Hahaha mate I tried the conversions few days back, I gave up
Still bad but not quite as bad lmao
I just wish the US used the metric system more widely
I think Canada is even worse, they use both
So is "mate" actually common nomenclature or is that just a stereotype
I talk with a lot of Brits so I kind of got it from them
Ah
If you see me talk more often you will see a mix of American English and British English
Is it weird to call someone mate over there? hehe
Wanker is honestly the best insult ever
YA WANKAH
oi m8 u wankah
Knob is hilarious
Or knobhead
Innit
If I ever get in a verbal fight with a Brit i'll probably laugh my ass off
man maybe?
dude
What's up man?
Bud sounds kind of southern to me
Or dude, yeah
YO i gotta ask
What is the deal with everyone saying 'how are you?' but not expecting a respons
e
Lmao
That was the weirdest thing ever to me
best answer to how are you:
yeah and you?
Like i'd respond to the Walmart cashier 'I'm good man, how are you doing?'
And he'd just stare at me
😂
Actually at the grocery stores by me it's usually a "how's it going?" "good, you?" "Good"
At least better than nothing at all
"absolutely fucking terrible, let me tell you about this guy Jerry"
It also felt surreal when I sat in some diner and my friend was still eating, some waitress walked up, took my plate and just smacked the bill down
LOL
That's some rude shit
I did love the weird looks when I started talking Dutch to my friend
It sounds horrible to you guys
With the hard 'G'
I've had some servers ask "are you done?" while already taking my plate away and I'm like nooooooooooope
Jesus
Rare though
It's just some habits that are often portrayed in movies that actually turn out to be real (in my experience)
But loved my stay either way
USA is something a lot of Europeans only see in movies so we're a bit out of touch hehe
Heh
Well if you're ever in Chicago lemme know, I know some good restaurants to go to
You ever had an Italian beef sandwich?
Doubtful
Let me google that
It looks like it would clog my arteries but i'd probably eat 10 of them
Is Chicago a fun place for a tourist?
Protip: deep dish pizza is overrated. We have really good thin crust too
Yeah there's a lot of stuff to do
I've only been in NYC and Hawai so my view of USA is profoundly distorted
I've been told we're pretty nice actually
I'll add that to the list of potential ones. I don't care for West Coast, which is a popular destination for a lot of europeans
@scenic radish you live in chicago?
But I doubt i'd want to go to USA anytime soon though
And deep dish is not over rated. It's great.
Current events dont make it really attractive from what I hear, but that also might be media looking for clicks
Nah people are going nuts
chicago is too city .....need to get where the good food is
its turning into a shithole here
I'd wager like 50% of it is people tired of being cooped up inside. They can't handle it because they're weak
no one has masks
That sucks for you guys though
is only a shithole in city's ....country is fine
@brazen fable used to, now in the near south burbs. Oak lawn
I grew up in Oak lawn
Kinda glad our protestors keep distance and just turn in shitloads of signatures to get statues removed
I like our thin crust more than deep dish
covid hospitalizations are a record high here
To some that's a hot take
yay reopening and little shits not wearing masks
Man I avoided the news last couple days because it doesn't do any good so far
Yeah covid is spiking in some areas
Seems like I still shouldnt
@scenic radish I'm way up north now in the Barringtons
Right by all the old mafia
And I was born in Bridgeport. Go ahead and put 2+2 together
Jesus USA has like 33% of the worlds covid cases
Heh
what is wrong with perception of usa in the news ....what you see is only 20 percent maybe ....rest of rural america is good
Vas is about to explain how he makes his own beef jerky
Yeah this shit only hits cities TBH. They love to tear themselves apart
@scenic radish i do with vension
Which is exactly why I moved far from the city
If they rioted out here they'd all be dead
HA I KNEW IT!
Hehehe
^^^^ city slicker
Illinois
But I live by all the old Italian Mafia, and we're probably all related if you go back far enough
Capone had 8 siblings
About to down one of these (banana for scale)
Alright it's beer and borderlands time
Enjoy!
You'll see me more often here, asking around like a clueless asshat
😆
Alright one last question before I go, can anyone else see 120Hz flicker? My TV has a "clear action" setting that flashes the backlight at 120Hz to reduce motion blur. Works well but I can see a flicker, particularly in light areas of the screen
Console pleb
What if I told you you can play on a TV with a PC too
I honestly think it's a trade-off of the clear action setting
I'm aware. I have a TV hooked up to my computer lol
Isn't there some game mode on the TV?
Surely a 120Hz TV has some optimization options
cries in 1080p
all with minimal input lag
I only stepped in the PC realm about two months ago though, so i'm happy for now
It is indeed a trade-off, the TV settings say "sensitive users may notice flicker." Guess I'm sensitive ❄️
My stock Xbox one x build is happy with my 1080p
Now @brazen fable this may make you scream, but... || I'm happy with 60 FPS ||
Let's hope next gen brings something cool to the table
oof
ThE HuMan EyE CanT sEe mOrE ThAn 60 fPs
Lmao
I mean i'd like to push it all a bit higher, but apparently I bought a screamer of a GPU
I dislike fans more than I dislike 60FPS
Heh
My 10-year-old laptop that I'm using as a desktop shoots up to 90C when playing a video lol
Sounds like a laptop alright
@meager flume gogo water block
cpuz validator appears to be down
ThE HuMan EyE CanT sEe mOrE ThAn 60 fPs
Yeah but you got two eyes so thats 120fps
RIP
fan at 4500 RPM
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
@wet pilot Is that possible in a microATX build?
Im stupid with pcs
This is my first build... ever
Monitors is a shame
its possible in a ITX build
You have to choose between gaming features and everything else
@clear ferry has a micro || bepis ||
gaming features are overrated
Lol
Also got myself some noctua fans because stock is shit
Depending on your case you could probably get a pretty good water loop running
Custom is kinda the only way to go if you want to tie in your gpu
My corsair AIO's do just fine. GPU's don't really need water cooling
My 1080ti barely goes over 50c
A lot of the newer stuff runs hotter
my 3800x does run hot though
it's hotter than my 8700k
and that's with a better AIO cooler
And if you get a reference cooler you're screwed by noise
and thermal grizly
What is the matter with ryzen 5 3xxxx?
No point looking if I only buy every 5 years
my 3600 is hot as balls when i dont undervolt
Not much
my 3800 runs super hot
Just dense
i was actually surprised at how hot this thing runs
I dont mind it getting hot, I do mind the fan not keeping up and constantly changing RPM rapidly
Its annoying as crap
I had to order a portable A/C unit because my tech room is so hot
Have you tried running less tech :3
Just buy 10 meter+ cables, put in fridge --> profit
Look at this sshit
Googling conversions....
To be fair, I've got a lot of tech in this room
No it's a bedroom
I'm glad our hot temperatures never stick hehe
It's aight. When i get this auxillary a/c installed i'll be cool as a cucumber
Won't be good on the power draw i suppose hehe
I use as much power by myself as a family of 10
Or so the power company tells me
It's aight, solar panels inc.
Seems like a proper investment then yeah 😄
I replaced my stock cpu cooler with a bequiet 120mm
Also to be fair, i can completely run my business from home
Quiet af
and i've got a server here for offsite backups
Turns out it was a bad chassis fan that was making all the noise but oh well
I try to keep my rack under 200w
Sitting at 120w atm
my personal home server burns 120w+ just by itself lol
That's what i did with the 8700k
I haven't even measured my storage array
My server and networking equipment pulls a spicy 25 W total
like 60?
Think of all the rpiz you're depriving of power
I am a little scared to see what my home server draws at idle
What sort of server is it
No as in what hardware
xeon E5-2670 in a big ol gigabyte dual socket board
had two in there for a bit
its not going to be crazy high numbers, just high idle compared to newer things
What do you all think about all-in-one router and server for parents
I was thinking of getting an medium sized optiplex for my mum to run HA
And figured I could put proxmox on it and run opnsense as well
I don't like the idea of it
while I have many eggs in one basket I wouldn't put my network in the same basket
network should be separate and easy to troubleshoot, imo
and old people need something they can just unplug and plug back in lol
She would have no idea what to do with either a simple router or a single box she plugs into the fttp
So she'd be relying on me entirely
Plus there's the old router still there as a backup
I'll think about it. I can always change it later. Only sunken cost is a NIC
Optiplexs are hard to beat
$260 shipped from Australia with i5, 8gb and 128gb ssd
Will probably idle at 15w and can fit 3 x sata drives
nice
1 x 3.5" and 2 x 2.5" jammed in there
And 2 x pcie slots and internal power supply
Wayyyyy better than a NUC
for sure
It'll need to do some NVR duties as well
I've been meaning to do that since I moved in but havent yet, 15 months later
im not so fussed anymore
It's worthwhile
Even if you put surveillance microsd cards in the cameras themselves
I doubt most junkies will rip cameras off ceilings to pull cards out
I'd probably get a dedicated 8TB or two for footage storage if I did it, separate to my main unraid array
Yeah don't use unraid for it
since I would use PoE anyway
I'd just get one drive if you want to chance it
well it'll be on my unraid server but not using its storage because that could be problems
The likelyhood of your drive failing while simultaneously getting robbed are low
Yeah that's what I meant
and ill use a separate ethernet port for the cameras too
try separate as much I can
Just means you're churning vlan routing bandwidth for video
hmm
If you have real network hardware it won't be an issue
just get 10gig switch.
they're cheap and do the job
Most 10g have crappy l3 unless you go really expensive
even if you don't use the sfp+ the routing capacity is there
There really isn't much usecase for L3 in a home
nothing a decent router can't handle anyway
there‘s also a opnsense for rpi3, not official though
woo only 12.6 tb left to upload
I'm not great at networking, if I ever did it I'd just see how it went
but I am really not fussed on cameras
maybe one day when I have more free $$$
I would just put them on the same subnet but blacklist them from dialling home
I'll seek advice when I am at that stage I guess, I have so many things I'd spend on at home first
nah different subnets are a good idea
there are other benefits like reduce broadcast traffic etc
and no inter-connection between devices
1 compromised device can seek out and exploit other devices on the network. This would prevent that
and it's really simple to just put things on different subnets nowadays
Separate subnets doesn't immediately prevent communication though
With firewall rules, yes
Depends on the firewall
There's no point in a separate subnet if you allow them to communicate
unless you've run out of ipv4 addresses i suppose
Well yeah. Just didn't want someone to think separate subnet == no comms between them
Actually without seperate subnets im pretty close to filling a /24 lol
Wtf
30 addresses just for cameras, and then tons of VMS
I have indoor and outdoor cams. Indoor cams are generally off, but automatically turn on when I leave and set the alarm to away mode
😄
I am nowhere close to filling a /24 especially with having a separate IoT VLAN
And guest VLAN, for that matter
yeh i have a guest vlan with a portal
You using 10/24 subnet?
no
I've been using 192 my entire life and I've got so many things just memorized
Yeah that's fair
Ah, mine's 10.0.0.2
and if i ever switch back to a comcast modem i don't want any fuckery with their shit
because they use the 10. now
Thank goodness for zwave
I couldn't imagine having all my smarthome stuff as IP
how do you guys deal with a site-to-site vpn and the same subnets?
don't use the same subnet?
Change subnet haha
just use a different subnet for the VPN and allow intra-vlan for those two nets
yep thats why I use 10.0.57
my wiregaurd is 10.0 yeh
I think we're a fair way off from ipv6 ubiquitiy
Honestly I don't even want my devices to have ipv6 ever
It's a bit convoluted and I don't really understand much of it
I just don't see the use for it, and for personal stuff ipv4 is just so much easier to work with than e3042:2342:234@:#41@:#$
NAT works fine.
oh yeah that's what you mean
IPv6 for the main WAN but IPv4 for everything else
and fuck CG-NAT
I access my remote services over ipv6 to NGINX which proxy_pass to the LAN ipv4 addys
Kubernetes doesn't support dual stack
I‘m supposed to have a dynamic adress for my residential line from my ISP, but it‘s been static the last five years and my isp doesn‘t even provide ipv6... so I guess we‘re not out of adresses yet 😄
ftth though
I just use ipv6
i have 2 different subdomains pointing
I don't think ipv6 isn't a guarantee that your prefix will never change
I really hope things swing back to normal soon because I think I'm going to try to get comcast gigabit pro installed again
sweet sweet 3gbps symmetrical
hah pay for static 😂 knocks on wood
@hushed basalt should be, there's no reason for the prefix to change
But I do have a cronjob update my AAAA record in case
There's no reason but your isp could get bought out or change their stack
As long as you've got a fallback
Yeah and if I switch ISPs I suppose
I do run dual stack though. I have an A record with my ipv4 WAN IP
i actually have 2 Wans because I don‘t trust my ISPs fiber modem... I also access everything in my Lan via reverse proxy in between the modem and my router... am I paranoid? maybe
Li'l
Your modem is on the wan side
