@brazen fable yay. I will adjust that later

yeah. everyone know im a solar panel whiner, but the solis inverters was so insecure someone tried to use them to install an apk on my nvidia shield somehow
@late gate seriously? That's nuts. Glad I have my IoT stuff on a VLAN

#

Hello everyone!! Does anyone know why a gas hot water tank use up to 150W??! is there usually water pump inside?

green inlet
#

Crap. I found it

forest edge
#

@edgy crown is your hot water tank hooked to power? I never seen a gas water tank use electricity but that doesn't mean they don't exsist

slate marsh
#

Emersion heaters used to be pretty common here (big kettle wrapped in insulation basically)

edgy crown
#

@forest edge yes it is but I always thought it was for the igniter but 150w is way too much for that ... unless there is a heat element or some kind of a motor inside

slate marsh
#

Are those single data points? Could just be the accuracy of the current meter

forest edge
#

@edgy crown you 100% sure it's gas and not electric? the igniter only needs a small battery

#

@edgy crown if your sure it's gas, and it requires power.. then yes it is most likely a pump for pressure or some kind of backup heating element for maintaining temps over long durations

slate marsh
#

Triggering a latching valve?

brisk glen
#

Just get the model and look it up

#

Find said manuals

edgy crown
#

I checked again and it seems there is a vent motor, could this be it?

#

I assume that motor kicks in to circulate the air for the burner ... didn't know a small fan could use up to 140w

forest edge
#

no idea, like i said I never seen a gas water heater that uses electricity

edgy crown
#

I also got puzlled before with the fridge when it peaked to 360W ... it turned out the ice make use a heating element to seperate the ice when it is done

scenic radish
#

Is it a power vent water heater?

#

Fridges also have a defrost cycle and you can see a spike when the compressor turns on

edgy crown
#

yes, i checked the manual as suggested and indeed it was.

scenic radish
#

Oh I see you discovered that. It's to vent out the combustion products

clear ferry
#

My water heater uses 1500-2500w when it heats water haha

edgy crown

Yes, any time electricty gets converted to heat the wattage goes to the roof lol

clear ferry

Is there a good thermostat that has a good API that doesn't require the internet?

hushed basalt

Thermostats 🤢

scenic radish
#

There are Zigbee/zwave thermostats

hushed basalt
#

You Americans are weird

buoyant quiver
#

I want to block internet access to it and never have it online

scenic radish
#

Or ecobee can connect to home assistant locally via HomeKit controller

#

(that's what I do)

hushed basalt
#

I think probably only 1 out of 200 homes here have a thermostat

scenic radish
#

🆒

buoyant quiver
#

I was thinking about ecobee, then found this

hushed basalt
#

Everything is HVAC with wall panels/remotes

scenic radish
scenic radish
forest edge
#

Everything is HVAC with wall panels/remotes
@hushed basalt wat? lol

buoyant quiver
#

I can't connect directly to it?

scenic radish
#

Not with the ecobee app, no

hushed basalt
#

Thermostats are things you put on the wall and open/close a contact when the set temperature is reached

scenic radish
#

That requires a cloud connection

buoyant quiver
#

That's so dumb. Why?

hushed basalt
#

We don't use those. Very rare

scenic radish
#

I don't know lol

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt you have to manually operate your hvac?

scenic radish
#

Because companies love the Cloud ™️

hushed basalt
#

No we have remote controls same as everyone

buoyant quiver
#

I just want a boring thermostat on the wall and a widget in ha

scenic radish
#

So...what I suggested

forest edge
#

remote controls is manual, unless it, itself has a thermostat?

scenic radish
#

Ecobee via HomeKit controller

hushed basalt
#

But central gas heaters etc are very rare

#

The thermostatic components are inside the return air ducts etc

buoyant quiver
#

What does a home kit controller do?

forest edge
#

The thermostatic components are inside the return air ducts etc
@hushed basalt it really comes down to this, does your hvac turn itself on or off based on inside temps?

hushed basalt
dull chasm
#

no the roo do

hushed basalt
#

That's a thermostat

#

A nest etc is the same it's just electronic

forest edge
#

a thermostat can be many things lol

buoyant quiver
#

Nest does not have a public api

forest edge
#

any switch device that works off temps is a thermostat

buoyant quiver
#

They disabled it

hushed basalt
#

Yes but our thermostats aren't on the wall that you control

buoyant quiver
#

More reasons why I want a local, offline device

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt ok but you do havve a thermostat, just not our kind lol

hushed basalt
#

Like you never "buy" a thermostat here

#

It's inbuilt into the hvac

forest edge
#

how does that work

#

if your room is cold, how the hell does it know when to turn on

hushed basalt
#

The indoor unit has sensors in it

#

Same as yours

dull chasm
#

if the the roo is shaking

forest edge
#

yea but mines in the basement lol

#

is your hvac in your living room?

dull chasm
#

mines in laundry room

hushed basalt
#

Return air enters the indoor unit, temperature is measured, heat pump turns on or off based off that

#

Or adjusts the inverter

forest edge
#

so what the air is constantly cycled?

hushed basalt
#

If the fan is on auto it will switch on occasionally to take measurements

#

Or the fan just runs constantly

forest edge
#

thats sounds very energy inefficient

hushed basalt
#

That's how all heat pumps work worldwide I assume

forest edge
#

during a certian range of temps and only if there is a call for heat

#

here anyways

#

but again the thermostat here takes those measurmenets

#

BEFORE kicking anything on

hushed basalt
#

What does your thermostat control

forest edge
#

it controls everything

#

mine even controls humidity

hushed basalt
#

What sort of system

forest edge
#

honeywell

hushed basalt
#

Yes but what sort of heating and cooling system

forest edge
#

mines is a duct, unbit inside and compressor unit outside

#

pretty standard here in the states

hushed basalt
#

Heating and cooling?

forest edge
#

yea

hushed basalt
#

Anyways my point is in my city it's very rare to see a thermostat

forest edge
#

aside from the indoor wall mounted thermostat there are also sensors in the compressor unit outside and some like mine even have remote sensors for outdoor temps etc

dull chasm
#

fan inside blows/pulls over a heating element and a cooling element (a coil)

hushed basalt
#

We don't use contacts to turn on/off a system

#

Maybe people with ducted gas heating do but heat pumps are making those irrelevant

ocean mirage
#

I just assumed a thermostats was like the remote you use to control it lol

hushed basalt
#

I've never lived in a house with ducted gas heating and I've lived in 10 houses

forest edge
#

@ocean mirage it is, basically but it's also like auto lol

buoyant quiver
#

Any thoughts on that thermostat?

forest edge
#

@buoyant quiver there is an integration for honeywell. no idea if it's local only tho

hushed basalt
#

A thermostat on the wall literally closes/opens contacts to turn on the heating load etc

ocean mirage
#

Oh huh

forest edge
#

A thermostat on the wall literally closes/opens contacts to turn on the heating load etc
@hushed basalt this is exactly the same thing as what we havve, just some are more advanced etc

#

nm

#

I got confused

dull chasm
#

@hushed basalt the thermostat does not control the load directly ...it sends a control voltage to contacts on unit

hushed basalt
forest edge
#

you were talking to whiskers lol

buoyant quiver
#

There really aren't many options for local thermostats? I'm honestly surprised

hushed basalt
#

@dull chasm i know it's not like switching the load directly. You know what i meant :p

forest edge
#

@buoyant quiver local using some like rest without cloud? nope.. cloud is how they make money

buoyant quiver
#

I don't want any data to leave the house

hushed basalt
#

This or equivalent is a typical setup in Perth

#

They're just wired remotes

forest edge
#

@buoyant quiver there are diy thermostats. google it. most look like crap to me though lol

hushed basalt
#

Do they make zigbee thermostats

buoyant quiver
#

I designed my own, and it has a local api

#

I just want something more presentable to put on the wall

hushed basalt
#

Do you need an api for a thermostat

#

If you had something ZigBee you could just use zigbee2mqtt

#

Completely local

buoyant quiver
#

I don't have any zigbee devices in the house, but I would entertain that

hushed basalt
#

Otherwise you can hide your diy one and move up to wall mounted tablets

#

To control temperatures and everything else

buoyant quiver
#

Not a terrible idea

hushed basalt
#

Just use lovelace pages for them

#

Compact header to hide navigation bars on those devices

buoyant quiver
#

I'm just surprised that there are no options :(

hushed basalt
#

I'll be doing wall tablets when we have our own house

#

Guest friendly, control anything. No using phone or Google home to change temperature

dull chasm
#

esp and 3 relays ....espeasy with a temp probe and some automations your done

forest edge
#

I'm just surprised that there are no options :(
@buoyant quiver finding local only anything is becoming harder and harder

hushed basalt
#

You can even use more temperature sensors to get a better reading

#

I have multiple temperature sensors average together

#

Rather than relying on one sensor on one wall in one room

#

That's what's good about ZigBee stuff, because you can get cheap ready to use stuff off the shelf but use your own gateway and it's completely local

#

Can literally unbox something, turn on pairing in HA and put the device in pairing mode and have it in HA in 2 minutes

#

Then just rename it in HA and you're done

#

No flashing, no 3d printing, no installing dodgey phone apps, no signing up for accounts or blacklisting MACs

forest edge
#

no quality, no consistency

#

lol jk

#

man I have grown too damn lazy. had a shelly 1 and a reed switch for over a week and still haven't replaced myq lol

buoyant quiver
#

That's not a bad idea @hushed basalt

#

I kinda don't like that I have to use a different wireless technology because the industry wants to snoop in your house

#

Also, my diy thermostat has pid integration, and a learning feature to calibrate the house

#

So it attempts to turn on the heat before it begins to drop, and it turns off the heat before hitting the temperature

#

After it's calibrated, it will reliably keep the house within 0.1 C

#

I can't imagine the simple thermostats would have anything like this

hushed basalt
#

I would recouple your switching from your sensing

#

So you can move all the logic into HA

#

Then your device is just a swith

#

Switch and sensor

buoyant quiver
#

I don't like that because if ha goes down, there's a potential to have the heat stuck on

edgy crown
#

I tried coding my own thermostat before ans found state machines approach much easier. I too had dificulties with trying to automate everything including Heat, A/C, Air Circulation, Fan and Dehumidifier. I ended up buying ecobee ( still doing the air ciruclation manually in HA)

hushed basalt
#

Sounds like you've already got your thermostat where you want it

buoyant quiver
#

@edgy crown can you use the ecobee offline?

hushed basalt
#

All you need is a presentation layer

buoyant quiver
#

@hushed basalt it's just really ugly

hushed basalt
#

Tablets

buoyant quiver
#

I don't really want to diy it any more

#

Yeah the tablet thing is kind of interesting

hushed basalt
edgy crown
#

@buoyant quiver I dunno, I never tried

buoyant quiver
#

Optoisolators on the relays, interesting

edgy crown
#

yes, i didn't want the 24v from the HVAC getting into the TTL circuit

#

@hushed basalt that is a very nice setup you got there

hushed basalt
#

Not mine just google

#

But that's a lenovo tab 10 in a frame

#

I would use lovelace no hadashboard

#

But yeah with a cheap photo frame and a cheap tablet you can get a great wall panel

#

Especially if you have drywall walls to recess mount it

edgy crown
#

cool

#

@buoyant quiver I just tested the ecobee offline functionality

#

it doesn't work

#

HA goesn't give any errors but it says HVAC connectivity issue in the logs

#

the ecobee app doesnt do anything, says thermostat is offline

#

only way control available is from the wall thermostat itself, everything else is pretty much dead

buoyant quiver
#

Thank you SO MUCH for testing that! ❤️

#

I really appreciate it!

edgy crown
#

@buoyant quiver you are welcome 🙂

I am a city dweller, when I think of farms I think of Amish people and boredom.

dull chasm

there is always something to do .... boredom is not a thing and in my op ....healthier lifestyle ...you have a feeling of independence and accomplishment .... 5 acres is not much of a farm but animals can be a joy if you have enough that its not a chore but something to cherish and believe me the animals can get attached to you the same you can to them

I had to stay in Horsham population of 16,000, after 1 week I had exhausted Tinder. The local bar had 3 people in it and they were old men playing darts, the pub food cost $20 per meal, everyone was overly friendly asking how I was and everyone knew each other.

I was sooo glad when I got back home promptly went to a Nightclub and had general indifference again. Farm life is not for me. I like the ability to get my m365 scooter to the shops (5 minutes away) and buy food, drinks and entertainment at 3am.

rare condor

@last plaza You are not missing out, Kangaroos are not liked by farmers and they are stupid af. I have had to kill one after it jumped into my Suzuki Swift and wrecked it

#

Deers are awesome!

last plaza
#

Same as deers then... we get into accidents all the time. They cause a lot of damage to your cars.

ocean mirage
#

Yeah basically the same

rare condor
#

I loved seeing them in Nara Japan, they bow to you and are so majestic

ocean mirage

the main roads out of my city are just lined with roo carcasses

last plaza

Problem with the deers is when you drive at night, they come from nowhere and next thing you know is your car is all wrecked!

but whereas deer do the whole freeze and look at you think, roos are stupid fucks that will pass you and then turn on a dime and double back. You think you are clear but nope the fuckers get in your way anyway

roos mainly move at dawn and dusk tho

Aren't the main points that you put up a CCTV sign and you delete old footage? Seems easy to comply with.
@deft pewter That seemed to vary from country to country and depend on the circumstances as well so it's complicated

clever mortar
#

UK thankfully publishes quite easy to understand guidance

deft pewter
#

The link Tinkerer shared details your responsibilities.

#

Seems fair and simple.

rain swift
#

yeah, in the UK they just put up cameras everywhere so they can even see you pee.

deft pewter
#

I wondered who installed that camera in my bathroom.

rain swift
#

how many cameras are pointing at you at any given time in london? like 40?

#

lol

clever mortar
#

All of them

scenic radish
#

Interesting. In the US, I believe the idea is if you're in public you have no right to privacy

deft pewter
#

I think it's one thing if you're a street photographer and someone's in your shot.

rain swift
#

don't mean I want big brother watching everywhere I go with their facial recognition and storing it on pedabyte drives.

deft pewter
#

It's another to have a camera recording everything on your street 24/7.

scenic radish
#

Well yeah, I don't want "big brother" tactics either, but if someone has cameras on their own property I don't see an issue with that

rain swift
#

me either

orchid rose
#

The issues would arise if the cameras can see "too much"

rain swift
#

"we" should be able to have cameras all over our property. 😄

orchid rose
#

it's a slippery slope at that point

rain swift
#

yeah, you don't have any expectation of privacy in your front yard for instance from other people.

scenic radish
#

I guess the problem would be defining what is "too much"

orchid rose
#

That's why it's defined as pretty much anything here

rain swift
#

the great difference is "who"

scenic radish
#

Pretty subjective which makes it more difficult

#

No right answer for sure

rain swift
#

if bob takes a picture of my license plate as I drive by his house, who cares, if the police have a camera taking pictures of all the plates going down a street, no.

orchid rose
#

So for example in my case: To get to their homes, people will have to pass my door. There's literally no way I can capture that without capturing when my neighbors go in and out.

scenic radish
#

This discussion has been fine but why do we have to skirt the line of politics so often lol

rain swift
#

I'm all for the neighbors cameras also covering my property lol.

#

well.......

#

its hard to keep it out of everything unfortunately.

scenic radish
#

True

orchid rose
#

Someone once said everything is politics

rain swift
#

if small groups of people didn't have so much control over your life it wouldn't be a problem LOL.

scenic radish
#

Heh

deft pewter
#

Isn't this more about ethics than politics, anyway?

orchid rose
#

It gets even harder with the resolutions of cameras going up all the time

#

Soon you can see what happens inside the neighbors houses on your CCTV. That probably crosses the line for most people...

rain swift
#

I mean if you don't want the neighbor seeing in your yard, you can put up a higher fence lol.

#

close the blinds, etc.

#

I mean if anyone can see into your house and you get robbed, is it your fault for letting everyone see in?

orchid rose
#

Cameras are often high up too. Remember the photos that Google took for their street view that caused issues?

rain swift
#

or their fault for looking?

#

and what difference does it make after you get robbed lol cover your windows.

#

don't lay in the yard naked if you don't wanna granny next door to see it

orchid rose
#

There's also a distinction between seeing and recording

rain swift
#

the fact remains..

#

you can't force people to cover their eyes.

#

if you do something where people can see, that's on you.

orchid rose
#

You can not, but you can force people to not record it on film

rain swift
#

you can, but you shouldn't be able to.

#

victimeless crime

orchid rose
#

that's when it enters politics and I'll leave it at that 🙂

rain swift
#

you can see me naked outside but not record it! lol

#

just dumb, keep your clothes on.

#

we protect dumb people too much

#

fighting natural selection lol

deft pewter
#

So... where can we see you outside naked? 😉

#

Asking for a friend.

rain swift
#

nowhere, I don't want people seeing, let alone recording

#

but if I was outside naked, I wouldn't fault anyone for doing either.

#

when you gain x-ray vision you can get into ethics lol

orchid rose
#

There are multiple laws against defaming too. You are protected against stuff you do in public too.

rain swift
#

that's because people love to force their morals on others, at gunpoint.

#

more victimless crimes.

#

oh your feelings are hurt, get over it.

orchid rose
#

Agree to disagree and it's off topic unfortunately

rain swift
#

#

its kinda fun skirting around stuff without going over a line, good mental exercise.

clear ferry
dusk lodge
#

What does this even qualify as

#

It's so subjective lol

clever mortar
#

Keeping data forever is bad

#

Keeping it for 6 months if you can justify it is fine

#

Keeping it for 3 months "just in case" is bad

dusk lodge
#

I mean

#

Living in the street with the 2nd highest crime rate in the borough I would consider a reasonable justification

#

But idk, I don't really have infinite hard drive space anyway

#

It would most likely work on a monthly delete basis where data gets kept locally for 31 days

#

I feel like data older than 1 month wouldn't come in very useful anyway unless I'm on holiday

orchid rose
#

Most likely it comes down to that if you didn't mean any harm, it's fine

dusk lodge

Ring doorbells tend not to have signs

yes, post detailed signs of all of your defenses and security measures, bonus if you include brands and model numbers.

#

the fact is nobody will know how long you keep anything.

6' 1" huh? I'm 6' 0" (182 cm)

I dunno, I think a lot of the changes like that are good. There's no reason to keep using "loaded" terminology

I mean white is historically a pure colour and black is corruption and evil

#

Because black eg is the absence of light and white is an abundance of it

#

Black represents darkness and absence

Does anyone miss Cinemas

#

i really don't

thick dragon
#

I like going to cinemas with a bunch of friends, mostly for blockbuster action movies or horror movies. Apart from that, I have a decent home cinema with a 65" 4K TV and 5.1.2 surround/ATMOS speakers 😛

dusk lodge
#

I only visit cinemas for movies I genuinely care about

#

Or when I haven't gone in aaaages for a movie I reasonably want to see before a physical release

#

We have a shitty home theater in my mum's bedroom (courtesy of me piecing together an old hifi system, decent old speakers with chewed cones, and a 480p Chinese projector attached to a Chromecast)

#

when I move out I'll run 4K with a 5.1 setup or something

dull chasm
#

dont go down the hi fi audio rabbit hole ...it gets expensive real quick

dusk lodge

i'm not a silly audio boy

thick dragon

That definitely sounds like a very "house of cards" system @dusk lodge 😛

dusk lodge
#

what can I say, it was insanely cheap

dull chasm
#

well i am ....could have built a second house on cost of gear LOL

dusk lodge
#

the only part I paid for was the projector, which was £45 at the time

thick dragon
#

You can get a decent mid-range HT setup for around the same price as a good TV.

dusk lodge
#

and 480p is good enough for movies

thick dragon
#

Paid $3.2k AUD for my TV, $1.2k for my receiver, and another $2k combined for my speakers.

#

Speakers have lasted me ~10 years or so already.

dull chasm
#

i dont want to add mine up ....

orchid rose
#

With movies bigger is always better imo, but the screens are catching up. The black levels that oleds can offer are just amazing, but so are the screen sizes you get from a projector for a fraction of the price. SOON we'll have both...

scenic radish
#

$3.2k?? Goodness. I paid 450 USD for my 55" 4K TV

static schooner
#

sometimes the contrast ratio on my LG OLED makes it hard to watch in the dark.

but you gotta love the super-black blacks

thick dragon
#

It's quite a few years old. Was top of the range LED at the time, almost as good as OLED. OLEDs are still about $1.5k AUD more.

scenic radish
#

Yeah OLED displays are awesome

#

It's already cool enough having one on a phone, I can't even imagine how cool it would be on a TV

dusk lodge
#

I dislike OLED massively

scenic radish

sometimes the contrast ratio on my LG OLED makes it hard to watch in the dark.
@static schooner is that a first-world problem? 😂

dusk lodge

I'm a bigger fan of IPS

static schooner

oh, for sure

#

the technology hurts my first-world eyes

scenic radish

Lol

dusk lodge
#

I hate OLED because it literally expires

#

I don't see why I should pay £2k for a screen that will literally burn in and die

static schooner
#

microLED is the future, but unfortunately it's still in the future for mass market

dusk lodge
#

microLED will be mass market in <10y

hopefully <6y

scenic radish

dusk lodge
#

I'm excited for it

static schooner
#

I figure by the time my OLED "expires", microLED will be there to take its place

dusk lodge
#

Planned obscolescence is not a concept I am friendly towards personally

thick dragon
#

I thought burn-in was only an issue on the first few generations of OLED. Thought they were expected to have a 10+ year lifespan now.

dusk lodge
#

I mean

static schooner

properly calibrate your TV, too. I imagine that the showroom bright sets will die sooner

I've had 3 OLED phones

hushed basalt
#

OLED is great

#

Way better than LCD

#

Although there's a huge factor of things that go into making a tv great, meh or bleh than just their base illumination tech

#

I worked in an industry where people would spend $30k on 30" screens

#

In consumer space though, 4K AI upscaling is one of the best features that can really make things go wow

static schooner
#

My eyes bleed when I watch old TV footage from the 90s. Or even the early 2000s

#

Ain’t no upscaling gonna fix that

hushed basalt
#

It really can

#

There's a limit but it really does work

static schooner

It’s usually so blurry

hushed basalt

Machine learning deblurring and upscaling is a real thing

static schooner

It’s most noticeable when watching an HD show that intercuts old footage

#

Maybe it gets confused

orchid rose

machine learning in deblurring sounds like CSI enhance magic to me until I actually see it tbh
