But beware that shipper is concerning

@unreal orbit there is always something that we don’t like in each of them - it is a moving target.

undone aspen

Ring is cloud . Period

gentle ferry

damn

unreal orbit
#

Very true. They all have benefits and pitfalls

gentle ferry
#

that sucks

undone aspen
#

But hass integrations are incomplete and can slow things down

#

For ring

last plaza
#

Yep. I don’t like to keep all my eggs in one basket. I have pretty much all.

green inlet
#

Is t Zigbee the same as zwave but just a different freq?

last plaza
#

Yup

undone aspen
#

And a little less adopted pdobrien

unreal orbit
#

I'm sure I'll try zigbee eventually, I've just had such terrible luck with that frequency in my house

gentle ferry
#

but zwave is way more expensive according to what i see

unreal orbit
#

It's a proprietary frequency

last plaza
#

Atx uses powered ikea stuff that operates on zigbee - those powered devices act as repeaters and actively participate in mesh networking

green inlet
#

By the way, I got an inovelli switch for under 35.00. Zwave plus, scene control, led notification, and energy monitoring

#

Will see how it holds up

unreal orbit
#

Zwave stuff is getting pretty cheap nowadays

last plaza
#

Yup.

unreal orbit
#

The only reason I really have zwave is because there isn't really another option for door locks

last plaza
#

If you were to go with z-wave, go with z-wave plus.

undone aspen
#

There.'s,... Bluetooth.....

#

And WiFi.......

green inlet
#

🤢

undone aspen
#

And Zwave!

unreal orbit
#

Yup, zwave is what I said

undone aspen
#

hehe

#

I use Kwikset Convert Z-wave.

green inlet
#

There is enough work that goes into HAss. I just want my devices to work.

unreal orbit
#

The only devices I truly never have issues with are hardlined to ethernet

green inlet
#

That way I can spend more time on Skalavalas github figuring out templates

gentle ferry
#

@green inlet that's an expensive switch! imagine the cost of replacing every switch y u have in your house

#

i mean if one, then sure the price is good I guess

#

it's going to cost a lot if i want to replace every switch

green inlet
#

Ha. Most of my others are 50.00 homeseer switches

#

Every one, no.....I do it based on need

gentle ferry
#

haha

#

thta's gonna cost me a fortune lol

green inlet
#

I got sold on homeseer switches because of scene control.....haven’t even really used it. But they seem to be reliable and while others complain about a zwave network, mine just seems to work

#

Someone will prob 🤢 homeseer

ripe radish
#

I’m not a fan of homeseer

#

Ramp rate and on level can’t be set in HA

green inlet

Yes it can.

At least ramp rate can. Both local and remote ramp rate

No wonder you get free health care

late gate

@rare condor I see you say tigo optimizer. are you planning installing one? Just seeing tigo optimizer makes my back chill

rare condor

@late gate Yes and why? Is it because of the High Voltage DC or because you had a bad experience?

late gate

@frosty plank If you do that it will sit there and loop through all zigbee and wifi channels making them effective a jammer

hushed basalt
#

So even if I have to buy new batteries it's a steal

ocean mirage
#

I’ll have a look tomorrow

#

Yeah

rare condor
#

@late gate Which Tigo Optimizer did you use? I see nothing about this issue online, I see they use IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN (2.4ghz), but to get UL certification they cannot act like a Jammer, otherwise they would fail, furthermore they have to comply with RCM testing in Australia which again has RF testing to ensure that doesn't happen.

Are using suggesting without the TigoAP they cycle through the 2.4GHZ spectrum blocking WIFI, Zigbee and the like. Any sources on this as this is the first I have heard.

late gate
#

same models you linked to

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt Nice! You can buy decent UPS batteries on eBay cheap if you need to Panasonic ones are good

late gate
#

im not suggesting. its a fact. I struggled with this for years after figuring out it was the optimizers

#

When the sun came up all 2,4ghz and zigbee crashed and I could not figure out why

#

tigo refuse to recognize it

#

I had to buy a CCA to stop them scanning

rare condor
#

Are you sure it wasn't just faulty units on your end?

late gate
#

and they scan from they get pwoer

rare condor
#

Any other people have this issue?

late gate
#

yes

#

they will sit there and scan for a CCA

rare condor
#

Like if it were that bad you would reckon there would be lots of complaints??

#

@late gate I believe you, but I can't find any other people complaining, so not sure if its isolated to you?

late gate
#

on the norwegian forum several people complain, but its mostly isoltated to tech people

most solar is installed in non tech homes so they have no clue

hushed basalt

@rare condor thanks I'll check out ebay

Btw what sort of speeds have you seen on 8 bay hardware controllers with spinning rust

clear ferry

These are nice

hushed basalt

Sequential writes

clear ferry

Usually for spinning rust we say 180 iops per drive, versus 50-250k iops per ssd

hushed basalt

More about sequential read/writes

#

Bulk transfers

hushed basalt
#

Basically the reees on the homelab discord said you'd never need >1Gbit unless you had ssd storage

#

And I said I've seen hardware raid DASs saturate 1G speeds several times over in 8 bay hdds

#

I think they just couldn't comprehend that a high quality raid controller in raid6 could see over 100MBytes

clear ferry

The neckbeards who get their mom to buy them SATA drives don't count

hushed basalt
#

Hdd prices are insane atm

clear ferry
#

Nobody buys HDDs anymore in the enterprise space

#

I would say 98% is SSD

#

Been like that since SSDs passed HDDs in capacity

hushed basalt
#

How much is a 4TB enterprise ssd though

clear ferry
#

Some big number, but 80-90% discounted

#

But it's been a while since I saw 4TB

#

Mostly 8 or 16 these days

#

32 creeping in now

hushed basalt
#

Why heavily discounted?

clear ferry
#

Because all hardware in enterprise is

#

And the more you buy or a competition is undercutting, the more discounts

#

I've seen SSDs sold with 99.5% discount

hushed basalt
#

During covid downturn my old company would just undercut the main startup competitor

#

Because they're bigger and could ride it out while he was a sole operator

clear ferry
#

That is what enterprise hardware does every day

#

Undercutting on the initial sale, overpricing upgrades and expansions

wet pilot
#

Also licensing is the main money maker

clear ferry
#

We have scrapped most licenses actually

#

It is all included up front

wet pilot
#

Or support contracts

clear ferry
#

Support contracts is expensive unless you pay it up front, if you buy 5 years up front it is Hella cheaper than 3 years then two additional years

hushed basalt
#

5 years seems to make the most sense

#

Enterprise gear should be good for 5 years in my unqualified opinion

#

But the other guy was undercutting first. Buying A level gear and renting it out at 30% market rate

wet pilot
#

I think 3 on laptops for the masses is plenty though

hushed basalt
#

Yeah that's different

#

That's not an enterprise SAN or a compute cluster

wet pilot
#

Right

clear ferry
#

Most enterprise gear lives for 7 year tbh

#

Because customers suck at migrating

#

I still have a customer with 4 generations storage all running

#

Each one was supposed to replace the previous one

#

@wet pilot all products in Norway are 3 year by default, but usually vendors match the Norwegian automatic policy of 5 years

I've come to ask about whether there's a potential issue in this ghetto sounding idea : a wireless keyboard duct taped to a wall, with the dongle in a raspi, which has macros so that e. g. the Q key sends a command through the LIFX API or other smart APIs

As far as I can tell this would cost me about £3 and is probably the cheapest (even if crazy) way to have a working "smart" light switch for my A60 🤔

so the shell command integration is pretty cool. you can basically make your own custom service call with optional custom service data. my TV's auto-brightness control is way too dim even on High, so i made a shell command that uses a pyvizio command (which is included in home assistant) to automatically enable/disable auto-brightness control. this is the shell command:

lr_tv_brightness_ctl: "pyvizio --ip=10.0.2.46:7345 --auth=auth --device_type=tv setting picture auto_brightness_control {{ level }}"
``` and here's the automation: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/QnYMNhNmDx/
but all needed equipment and accessories are sold freely to everyone, at almost all general stores
They had to exempt changing a light bulb, to hell with that.
@clear ferry
As it should be.
I've done my own electrical work here a few times, but I've always got a friend who's a qualified electrician to sign off on it for insurance reasons.
#
And he DOES properly double check the work.
clear ferry
#
I am halfway trained as a electrician, but I swapped over to electronics, so I'm confident in my own work for now 🤣
#
will remove it when I sell the house
strange vapor
#
I've been trying to consolidate light switches. The previous owners over did it badly!!
#
Which makes automating lights more awkward 🙂
clear ferry
#
Wonderful, importing patches in WSUS uses a single core
#
I see it stopping at 25% CPU on a 4core VM
#
I'm trying to find some spray glue that has no odor after applying and drying
#
anyone used anything like that ?
rain swift
#
There are some dumb laws here from long ago that nobody even knows about let alone enforces, I'm fairly sure they will destroy right now in Australia if they catch you doing any electrical they don't like. Of course they'd have to catch you which seems unlikely.
clear ferry
#
A lot of people seem to be using Scotch Super 77
#
Maybe I'll order that
hushed basalt
#
They'd never "catch" you unless there was an insurance claim
#
And insurance companies would lovvvvveeee to not pay out 10,100 or 100s of thousands if they can say there's illegal work
#
Even if it's not the cause
#
I assume DIY electrical work is usually pretty obvious to insurance investigators
clear ferry
#
Looking at the original work in my house
I don't see how they could distinguish what I did from the shitty installjob in the 80s
Age of components/wiring :)
Pretty sure there's Year of Manufacture on most things
clear ferry
that is true actually
hushed basalt
#
"this wiring was made 2 years ago and you bought this house 10 years ago, what is the contact information of the electrician who did this"
#
Then you slip some enterprise SSDs in his front pocket and say "keep the change"
I have a apple tv that turn on my tv about 90 % percent of the time. but 10 times it fail and I have to grab the normal remote for the samsung tv to get it on. Any suggestions on how I can make sure it turn on 100% percent of the time with help of HA?
My friend is an engineer
But playing factorio with him makes me seriously worried
Zero concept of scalable design, critical thinking, root cause analysis,
Monoliths and fragile dependencies everywhere
Sounds like an IBM engineer
Rime of the ancient submariner ? 🤔
rain swift
#
@hushed basalt been told by insurance inspector that as long as you did something really horrendous, you won't not get a payout because you did your own wiring of things.
late gate
#
as long as the insurance company cant prove what you did was bad they cant do anything, but of course its a risk to take. Norway got some strange laws where you can put on 25A outlets for ovens yourself. seeing how clueless some are a lot of people should never touch this kind of stuff
If your house burns make sure it burns the whole way down
dull chasm
#
golden rules when wiring ....
  1. oversize awg of wire for circuit
  2. proper term's at each endpoint
  3. slightly undersize breaker compared to wire awg
#
never will have a problem ...breaker will trip before heating of terminations and or wire
clear ferry
#
Awg is such a shitty wire size definition
#
Since it is backwards
dull chasm
#
why
#
no its not
clear ferry
#
Bigger number, smaller wire size
dull chasm
#
yes and?
clear ferry
#
Shitty 🤢
#
Bigger number, bigger wire
#
Makes more sense
dull chasm
for eu maybe ...i grew up with so makes perfect sense
Wow. Watching this youtube video where this guy is making his own REALLY freaking amazing router table. And just the tools and mods he himself obviously made from wood. He's got... A wooden drill press.. Made his own pocket hole jig matching the Kreg one. Made his own Grr-ripper block for table saw and router...
dull chasm
#
so i guess ohms law doesnt make sense neither @clear ferry higher voltage == lower amperage ?
clear ferry
#
That makes fine sense peepoSmash
#
That's a formula after all
unreal orbit
#
That's what you have to do to get AWG from diameter. I don't even know how you can argue that it's a good system
dull chasm
#
i never have to do that and i design and install electrical systems
@undone aspen there is such a rabbit hole of woodworking/shop channels on YT . It's not even my thing and I've watched for hours
Okay, needing a conversion chart is also bad design
undone aspen
Indeed. This particular guy, is maticulous, thorough, accurate, detailed, even does metal. He's got his own ... Oh what is it? It's a saw that's on a track, can go up and down and left and right. His has his circular saw attached, wood backed with t-tracks in it.
I want his home-made shop! LOL
That was a mess
well i have done electrical work for close to 40 years ....building junction boxes ...circuit panels and etc ....never had a problem tbh
I'm not sure comparing volts to ohms and current * makes sense
V = I x R
really your debating ohms law
hushed basalt
No I'm debating your analogy
#
The relationship of V to IR compared to AWG being bigger for smaller conductors
#
I don't get it
dull chasm
i am simply saying we use awg and we are fine with that .... i am also ok with whatever anybody else wants to use .....one is not better than the other
really @hushed basalt .... i never did that of any other standard
what kind of question is that?
how many atx does it take to screw in a lightbulb type of question?
hushed basalt
Only 1 to screw in the bulb but 1 to flash the firmware and 1 to take it back to ikea and claim it's a dud when he screws it up
🤷‍♂️ didn't work when I opened the box
forest edge
#
if it makes you feel any better @hushed basalt our school tools like rulers etc generally have metric on them as well, same with products of liquid with litres and so forth. we just kind of over look those marks lol
unreal orbit
#
There are much easier and widely used conversions to mock. Feet in a mile, inches in feet, ounces in pound, tsp to tbsp to cup
#
pretty much... all of them
forest edge
#
funny how 12 inches became a "foot" when most people's actual feet were generally nowhere near that big lol
#
shoe sizes was always the messed up measuring system to me
#
and if you are a woman with wide feet, forget about going off the numbers lol
dull chasm
#
EU Counties did that not us
Initially, the Romans divided their foot into 16-digits, but they later split it into 12 unciae (which in English means ounce or inch). ... In the United States, a foot was estimated to be 12 inches with an inch defined by the 1893 Mendenhall order which stated that one meter is equal to 39.37 inches
I don't think Rome was part of the EU 😉
@clever mortar was there he can tell ya ..... even the term worth you wieght in salt comes from there
lmao TIL the actual definition of 1 inch is 25.4mm. So our standards are based on metric
