some people are fine with enough room to sit outside

hushed basalt
#

Fibre area is newer though

ocean mirage
#

hence the small blocks

hushed basalt
#

Yeah

#

But it means the houses have better codes

#

So less work uphill to get them performant. In theory

clever mortar
#

Also depends on what's around you. We moved from large garden to small garden, but nature is just a few minutes walk away

hushed basalt

Although solar gain in winter is probably harder

ocean mirage
#

does WA have an energy efficiency rating

hushed basalt
#

There's bush reserves nearby,

#

It's national codes afaik

ocean mirage
#

we have a rating out of 7 that every house being sold must have

#

but thats just ACT

hushed basalt
#

Generally narrower blocks in the newer area

#

I think 6 is the highest here

Required

ocean mirage

its all different scales

hushed basalt

And they usually bullshit that anyways

Play around with their calculators to massage it however they like

ocean mirage

I think ours is a government body that inspects but I really dont know

we are small so easier to do

hushed basalt
#

I think it's all just simulations self regulated

ocean mirage

either way you sound like you know what you are looking for in terms of efficiency stuff

An imperical test would be blower door testing and IR cameras

Can't fake those

ocean mirage

Why chisel? I think Iโ€™ve only used conical

Chisel gives more contact surface.

And a flat spot for pushing smd components around.

Ah okay

low harness

When I'm very worried, I just wear a wrist strap and touch the grounding screw every now and then. But most of the time I don't worry.

hushed basalt
#

@ocean mirage my crude sketch

#

But look at the contact surface area between the two, and imagine where the thermal centre mass is of the iron tip

#

Also that conical point extends in 3d as well, so it's even worse than the 2d sketch makes apparent

low harness
#

The conicalchisel is much better at holding on to a solder blob too.

hushed basalt
#

I'd only use conical on small solder cups on connectors

#

You mean chisel?

low harness
#

I do mean chisel

ocean mirage
#

Oh cool thanks for the sketch

clear ferry
#

Grounding soldering irons ?

hushed basalt
#

@rain swift you have to be very conscious if you want your soldering iron to be grounded or not

#

There's pros and cons for both

clear ferry
#

I have never done that in 20 years, I do wear ESD equipment when I work on very fragile stuff

#

but not for everyday soldering

hushed basalt
#

I recommend ESD protection in general

#

It's cheap insurance and you can't see the damage without an electron microscope and knowing where to look

clear ferry
#

Mostly only when I work on audio stuff, that is 10-50 years old tbh

#

for my diy projects I never wear ESD

clear ferry
#

I actually got a failed drive in my NAS

#

that is a first in.... almost 10 years

hushed basalt
#

You're probably one of those people who doesn't debur pipes

#

In water systems

clear ferry
#

I debur most stuff actually

ocean mirage
#

What is an esd

hushed basalt
#

Electrostatic damage

rain swift
#

@clear ferry but the ts-100 isn't grounded and the iron itself can kill components.

clear ferry
#

no iron I have ever had has been grounded

rain swift
#

even though it has a 3 prong plug, it apprently isn't grounded at the tip.

hushed basalt
#

Doesn't it have a grounding attachment

rain swift
#

it does

#

I was asking how people ground theirs lol

#

the hakko's are ESD safe so I assume those are grounded.

clear ferry
#

I've had... probably 15 irons over the years, in various price classes, never had ground

rain swift
#

that doesn't mean you weren't damaging components un knowingly lol.

clear ferry
#

except the one I had at school, that was $40k

rain swift
#

thats like saying I never check my blind spot and i've never been in an accident.

clear ferry
#

Just buy a better PSU for it or build one if you are paranoid

hushed basalt
#

Measure the tip to the ground point with an ohmmeter

#

It will most likely either be <5 ohm or >1M ohm

#

A hard ground will trip your RCD device if you hit a live mains circuit

#

A soft ground won't trip a circuit but will protect you from ESD somewhat

#

No ground won't do either

#

If the tip to the grounding terminal is hard ground and you don't work on live mains circuits I'd attach it to an ESD point

#

If it's soft ground I'd attach it directly to real ground

clear ferry
#

hello flashbacks to 2001

Sometimes a band aide is easier than making a new one

rain swift
#

but....live

#

holding conductive material in one hand, hey, you're still alive.

hushed basalt
#

Well it's more capacitors you have to watch out for

clear ferry
#

I've done it a few times, but it's seldom for me

#

usually when working with amps

fathom sparrow
#

tis but only a small shock

rain swift
#

so the general consensus I get is that even though the iron comes with a grounding wire, nobody uses it LOL as for a different power supply, I'm not sure if that would work since the one it came with has 3 prongs, I'd be all about buying a laptop PSU or something and not needing the ground wire at all.

clear ferry
#

I don't know, I've soldered for 20 years, all stuff I still use still works, I'm not worried, but I use ESD when working with old stuff Shrug

hushed basalt
#

All the big laptop power supplies I've used are earthed

rain swift
#

I wonder why the one it came with isn't earthed.

#

or is it and they are just weird.

And it's not connected to the negative terminal of the DC jack.

So I am trying to figure out what the most I can afford for a house is in every city in my state based on the total monthly payment. Which includes taxes, insurance, and p&I. The only three variables I have are the tax rate, insurance rate, and total payment I want to make.

I have an excel sheet with the tax rate of every town in my state. I'm trying to back in to what the home value would be in reach town based on a fixed monthly payment.

Does the tax rate of the surrounding cities fluctuate that much?

Speaking of taxes and mortgages @tidal bronze @hushed basalt @chilly nymph we only have property tax in the two biggest cities I believe, and we have variable mortgage rates as standard, 25 years and 2.6% what I started at, currently I have 13 years left and I have 1.49% interest rate, and in that time my house and property has so far doubled in value

@bitter horizon depends on where you made changes. If you're only making local changes and you never make changes on github through the website, then you'll always be pushing. Otherwise if you make a change on github through the website, then you need to pull and merge your changes before you push. I suggest you use snapshots if you don't understand git. You'll mess it up (like we all have at some point) and you'll need a second backup to restore what you broke.

or you'll need intimate knowledge with the system to undo your changes

Any Ideas? Or easy way to do it

@fathom sparrow I understand git, but wanna know what approach others are using. Im thinking of doing like this. VScode client on local computer .----> push to github ----> HA pulls config.

You can also connect via ssh addon in vscode direct to server and dev there, but then you need to push from HA to github

#

Thinking of what bestpractice is

fathom sparrow
#

I mean, you're the only one working on it. The best practice is what works for you. In a real world situation you'd want to pull & update & merge before you push your changes.

unreal orbit

I think that's all most of us would use it for

I use it at work for very basic file hosting

scenic radish

yeah, i guess i'm wigged out now because i saw one person post something like "if you're not doing any filtering in NGINX you might as well just have ports open for each service" which i don't agree with at all but i just assume other people are smarter than i am lol

Yeah that is dumb. Because it also gives you the ability to utilize subdomains effectively

?????

would be my response

plus you need to know the specific domain name used to access the service

I wanna buy some surveillance cams, so I would like to know how HASS can integrate with CAMS. Note that I haven't used HASS yet, I'm in the planning phase on which hardware to get. I will be also using a zigbee/zwave stick on it. Are there certain cams that are compatible? or does that actually depend on the CCTV solution? so far the plan is to use shinobi (http://shinobi.video) unless I get a better recommendation. I appreciate any tips, thanks.

@clear ferry yes I understand that, The cams will def support onvif/rtsp or else they can't be used on shinobi or other similar nvr. well, not integrate with cams directly, but the nvr

@cunning epoch I'm from Switzerland, those metal shutters are usually manual (like a long stick you have to rotate a "few" times). Newer buildings might have motorized shutters though, but mostly "dumb" ones - I bought shelly 2.5 for them, as I couldn't find a zigbee shutter relay. Some windows are from velux (io homecontrol), which could be integrated with a special box, but I'm only renting and don't want to invest in something I might not be able to use in a different flat.
