Well Austria
Its rather that I dont oder stuff what is in the EU already
Well. I think I could orderd that one from some EU warehouse
I tried the ESPhome one atx, but never got it to work for some reason. I have a MAX6675 but I'm not getting any numbers from the probe that I have. Instead of trying to figure out what the problem was, I just gave up.
@orchid rose going to use a $10 Bluetooth one and connect that to esphome
Which one? I was looking at a few options but not sure if anyone has reverse engineered the chinese bt ones
Whatever rebrand this is
which esphome integration is it supported by?
No idea, I was hoping that one of the Xiaomi ones might be able to read it
If not I might try openmqttgateway
Okay
An actual murder in Norway it seems, that been a while since last
Or, every 4h if you are in America
I guess thats only a DS18B20 with a metal stick.
idk witch cind of probe that is but I would go for something like
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32967524546.html
I have something that looks almost exactly like that, but I'm not sure if it's a "k-type" or something else. I'm not getting any readings out of it on the max6675 so I'm assuming it isn't
I tried max6675 and never got any readings from it. I did with the max31855. I have added a few probes around the grill to provide me with ambient temperature using ESPHome. I added a Rotisserie which is why I went down the Meater route. Was disappointed I couldn't integrate it so built something and then reached out to their founder to say they're missing a trick or two. More info here > https://github.com/jcallaghan/home-assistant-config/issues/21
I get a value off the max6675 if I short the input (gives ~30C) but if I connect my probe I just get errors probably due to the value being out of range. What was your issue with the 6675?
I just never got a reading back at all. Same probe worked fine with the max31855.
weird... Now I don't know if I should get another thermocouple or the max31855 then ๐
Daughter has learnt to put laundry in the basket
She's even so efficient she's saving us having to wear it first and is just getting it straight from the wardrobe
Aye, she started doing that 6 months ago, but has since stopped
But she puts her pyjamas back in bed after I've put on her kindergarten clothes
Kids toys
I just bought a laptop with 8GB of RAM
Kids toys
yeah toys are fun
but at least its expandable
i didnt know laptops today were serviceable
What, I have only seen a handfew the last 20 years that weren't
The trick is knowing that ๐
my current one that I am selling isnt
i thought there was a move to things you couldnt open
I'll admit I've only touched Dell/HP/Lenovo in the last ... while. All those publish maintenance manuals.
You know... One thing, as a DIYer, that I do not have that most seem to have, is a jigsaw. I don't even have a jigsaw.
I got a super cheap jigsaw from aldi
its passable
they are selling a bandsaw next week that I want
heh
and a lathe but I am not sure I'd ever use a lathe
I'm looking at the Ryobi Jigsaw.
never have before
But this just randomly came to my attention because a guy on this youtube video making a curtain control system with a stepping motor, is making all his parts out of wood, including the literal torque gears!
those are much more useful than the figurative torque gears
heh
Homemade automatic transmission with gear for roller blinds on the Arduino. Automatic blinds with photocell hands. Homemade electric for curtains. Automatic control for the blind. How to make curtains lowered and raised themselves?
The idea for this project originated at me 2...
You can get a decent jigsaw on amazon for pretty cheap tbh
I bought one to modify my desk lmao
Well, yeah, I mean I can get a Jigsaw from HomeDepot for like $50.
I'm making a desktop out of some old doors lmao
Yeah, this guy, russian I believe, is pretty good.
but also I dont mind pulling the curtains
Heh, I'm trying to come up with a curtain system that works both manual, and automated.
I'm surprised there isn't a more viable commercial system for it already
Viable being the critical point there.
Right
I don't find paying $500+ MINIMUM just to get started with a single curtain.
I really dont have a problem doing lots of things manually
I might be in the wrong place
Haha
I want to be able to automate everything
Including opening and shutting windows and possibly doors
for me its just things that I might forget to do or otherwise am unable to do
like irrigation, humidity control for the former
and turning the AC on before I wake for the latter
stuff like that
I want to be able to say "Computer Air out the house" and have all my windows open and fans turn on
Star Trek dreams
oh yeah that would be nice
I grew up being fascinated by technology namely because i was/am a huge trek nerd
I sort of considered getting winders for my windows since they are awning windows but I dont really care
window sensors would be nice though
8gig rpi4 and 64bit raspbian
alerts when the heating is on and a window is open
I have no idea what I'd do with one
I have been making my way through trek, never watched it as a kid
And in cold Chicago winters you have no idea how great it is to be able to start your car with a simple voice command
oof
last winter wasn't so bad though
we get to like -5C at worst really, overnnight
It's the first time i actually had to wear a jacket in literal years
I don't wear one at all until it gets below 0
Of course I keep one in the car with me
I'd prefer if temperatures stayed over 20c
so you more or less agree lol
Anything higher than 22 and the A/C goes on.
though I find perfect more like 26-33, depending on how much activity is required of me
darn insomnia. could not sleep untill 9am, luckily no work today, and at 9.15 the neighbour starting cutting down trees with a chainsaw
grumpy
Guess where my computer equipment is.
I'm going to have to install a new cooling solution just for that room. It gets toasty
looks nice in there rn
Although I'm a little annoyed
for some reason HA isn't picking up, or it just doesn't work, on these sensors, the humidity readouts
It's just coming back as 0
๐
I've tried excluding/including several times
no dice
whatever they were cheap i guess
Fahrenheit ๐คฎ
You mean freedom units
TBH body comfort makes more sense in F.
It's more granular
5c is a huge swing while 5f not so much
There are decimals you know
Yeah, and F can use those too
ahahahahhaha https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-52810220
The problem is that 99% of the world only understands one of them and has no reason to learn the other
Solar powered esp and greenhouse is getting there
I'm from the US. I don't care what the world thinks lmao.
I'm about usability and such
I think either would work really but once is easier to convert and everyone uses it
like once you know one and work within it its the same
Although it would be nice if we went full on metric with other measurements
"proprietary procedure that leads to relativistic time dilation and biological quantum entanglement at the DNA level" seriously how can someone fall for this?
What

Love this guy
Weird. My discord connectivity from my main Wan died
But everything else is working fine.
He's always so happy.
anybody keep a large media library?
I keep around 20tb
I just backup important stuff to google drive automatically (docker, time machine etc)
movies etc is just backup up by pairity drives
using unraid btw
I have to do an entire reupload to google drive. Not looking forward to it. 20ish TB is going to take forever
I use drivepool and cloud drive
And comcast cancelled my gigabit pro installation due to covid.
I dont really see the point of backup up media files unless its something you made yourself
I don't want to hunt them all down again.
and I've got a lot of stuff that was difficult to find
with sonarr and radarr thats done in a second though
Plus I'm a quality snob
I hand edit most of my media files to rip out unwanted tracks etc
and recontainer them
and google drive gives me unlimited storage so why not
lmao
im not that strict on stuff anymore
heh, that eye-contact camera idea is pretty impressive actually.
I don't mind because once i have it, i have it forever
Ahhh now then, my return to Amazon finally got delivered, now hopefully they get my refund to me now.
Course, it's funny. UPS is saying it delivered on Thursday, May 28th, at 11:00 PM.
But.. It's not even 10:00 AM, yet. LOL
Where did it return to
Amazon returns, Lexington, KY.
odd
Yeah, totally blame UPS for stupid reporting. ๐
My GoControl Z-Stick, they shipped it out of Miami this Monday, but USPS only shows "label created", so I contacted the seller, and they said, they will look into it, because they shipped it....
I dropped off an amazon returnt o ups on april 26th and it has never been scanned again
Heh
no clue what happened to it
i gave amazon the tracking number and they went ahead and gave me a refund
I dropped mine off May 23rd, and didn't get scanned again until May 26th, because of memorial day.
The GoControl Z-Stick, however, I contacted the seller, because THEY dropped it off, apparently, Memorial day itself, and hasn't been updated since, so they now know of the issue,.
Now, funny thing about Amazon right now is, if you click on "Account", you get a 404 page of a dog.
negative
No? yours is working?
yeh
Hmmmmmm
Oh, amazon customer support online chat.... also a dog.
hmmmmm
And of course, amazon support phone doesn't work.
Wow..
There's literally no way to get support for a major account issue.
Seems to only be a problem in Firefox, though...
What browser are you using, Soclias?
chrome
Do you ever use Firefox? ๐
heh.
My RPi4 is still running monitor.sh without a single issue.
Seems I might have to see if the same can hold true with a RPi 3 B+, which I believe it should, then replace my P0W's with RPI3B+'s
not really
Aha! Tinkerer!
I had issues with the Pi Zero running monitor, but the Pi 3 has been fine
The Orange Pi Zero LTS has had no issues either
I paid a lot less than that from Ali ๐
https://www.aliexpress.com/i/4000069931321.html is what I bought
ducks.
Actually, it was the 512 MB version ๐คท
Wow, they make those with 256MB?
I was about to say, dayum!
I can get a RPi3B+ for ~$52,
Doesn't come with that nice antenna though.
I don't use it - ditched it and went wired ๐
haha
Yeah, considering where I put my scanners, the same would happen.
They're both right where the can be networked right in.
I have one Pi on WiFi, because it sits in the garage. The rest are wired
$12.38 though for the OPIZ LTS Set4, 512
what do you use the pis for
Bluetooth device_tracker scanning.
monitor (Bluetooth tracking), Docker test environment, HA test environment, backup media server (Plex/Squeezebox), VPN server, backup server...
And other bits and pieces
heh
Eh
Hmmmm. I'm going to order a couple of these OPIZ LTS's. ๐
aside from bluetooth tracking anyway
ETA delivery, july 1st. 1 freaking month. LOL
The backup server, nah, that's as limited as it gets deliberately
The VPN server, doesn't need more than a Pi
depends on your bandwidth
Not enough to matter ๐
ahha
Besides, when VPNing home, I don't really need masses of bandwidth
I've got wiregaurd on a VM and a backup VPN on my UDM Pro
Pi3 runs Wireguard fine ๐
Mine is faster.
๐
the more mbit i can soak out the better
Especially since my phone is always on VPN when i leave
And eventually when shit goes post covid I'll finally have my 3gbps connection installed
I just use the VPN on my Ubiquity USG. Why bother with configuring something else that can break? ๐
Oh sheash... Estimated Delivery not 7/1, but 7/21
if they bake it into my udm pro then i'll probably retire the wireguard vm
Hmmm, and no power adapter to go with it, at that price hmmm
Okay, whatever. We'll try. ๐
would be cool if we had a bot assign roles according to your install method
It should, but the on board Bluetooth isn't supported by armbian
Eh, I had a few spare Bluetooth adapters kicking around
They're cheap, and easy to get a hold of
Yeah, I have a couple in my P0W's now, so I have that covered.
Long range ones, no less. ๐
Either way, I ordered a few from AliE. It'll take a while, but i'm in no extreme rush anyway. ๐
Besides, I'm still getting an RPI3B+, because I have an empty case, and no Pi.
That got moved into a NESPi case. ๐
And now, my account page works at Amazon.com again. After cutting through customer support saying. "Look, I'm not a newbie, I'm a Senior Systems Engineer, reporting a major issue."
Well, it partially works anyway.
Still broken on Linux/Firefox.
Did you only try Armbian, Tinkerer?
On the Orange Pi, yeah
You can GET the Bluetooth device working, if you do it manually.
That 8GB Pi4 doe, lmao
seems like a lot of memory for so little processing power
If you're running a lot of low power apps, seems to be pretty good, but yeah, pretty overkill for almost everything
did hte price of the 4gb drop yet lol
Kids toys
Imagine running proxmox as an adult
you mean not everybody runs HA with a Xeon ?
my HA runs on an 8700k
I only have one, yes ๐ฆ -- and only 32GB of ram ๐ฆ ๐ฆ
Consumer
I like to pretend I'm big time, ๐คฃ
@zealous rune they are extending most passes so you should be fine
@fathom sparrow re putting it on a pedestal. I run (when I'm not injured) but I'm aware of my limitations ๐ I've done a few half marathons. Ultras are a long way off for me.
a sprint is 3 miles
#templates-archived bois ๐
@scenic radish you're fired
trolled
@deft pewter You can easily complete one. Just do it for fun, bring some friends and complete it together.
Only 3 miles? I thought they only ran ultras
Tediore had to put down his Mointain Dew and chips to yell at us!
Yeah theres 4 levels: Sprint = 5k, Super = 10k, Beast = half marathon, Ultra = Ultra (30+ miles)
Only 64GB memory support, useless
If you do a sprint + super + beast in a year you get a 'trifecta'
I'll have to have a proper look. Super or best sound manageable, as long as I get some hill training in.
Beast will take min 3 hours, super 1.5 hours. That's if you're competative
I'm not ๐คฃ
The Beast may be a half marathon is distance but it is on par with a marathon for time and exertion
what's your half pace?
The hardest part is the climbs. Downhill you can hit ~7 min pace, uphill its 15 - 18 min pace
Especially if they make you lug a 50lb sandbag to the top of a mountain along the way
I was planning on 19 this year too
My pace? On a flat, only about 9 min/mi ๐
๐ฎ
North east america all the races are 4 to 5 hours away. Easy to make it to that many
just double up days too, I hit 6 trifects in 18' and 17'
I was happy to get a Trifecta done in one year. I've got a wife/kids. While I've roped the kids into a few Spartan Kids events there's no way I'm getting away for 19 weekends! ๐
oh no, not 19 weekends. 8 to 10 at most
Used to live in the NE but I was a lazy slob back then. Took moving to Germany to get my ass in shape/
it ends up being once a month
i'd go crazy if I just sat here and did HA all day. I need an outlet for the arugments
Well, once the craziness is over try to make it over to the Munich or Oberndorf event (Austria). I'll buy you a beer.
Jokes on you. I have a car and it can do a mile in 30 seconds.
๐
Thanks for the help, got kids to feed and my wife needs to yell at me about something I forgot/screwed up ๐ LAter.
I should get my fat ass in shape
My fat ass was getting in shape, then lockdown happened. Now my ass is getting fatter again ๐คท
dunno why google had to go and rebrand their google homo minis but the clearance sales on these are lit af
just picked up a combo nest hub with home mini for 90 bucks
If they were branded as google homo then I can see the issue
@unreal orbit I genuinely laughed out loud
I got one last year as Google was literally giving away Minis for free. Thought they'd get people interested in home automation or something... wait, dammit Google!
they're frequently on sale, 2 for 1, as well
i've got one for free with 20 bucks worth of razor blades lmao
I think I had recently signed up for YouTube premium and they emailed me and offered me one out of the blue.
Yeah I'm very much done with that #330990055533576204 conversation. Not even worth the effort

does aliexpress have extenders for these barrel cables
You could try searching ๐
oh no
my HDD from my first gaming computer finally got a SMART warning
Little solider might be put to rest soon. It's been a beast
I was wondering if I should try opening up a Google home mini and connect external speakers directly
Do they not have a speaker output?
I don't think the google home mini's do
@brazen fable I still have one of my spinning rust drives from my 2001 webserver brought it back to check for some files I couldn't find last year
Lame
Spun up like a champion
last 3 years or so it's more or less a cache/dumping drive
WD green, 5400K, 640GB
My drives usually last 10 years, before I replace them, but then I just store them
Pfft. They're great target practice
Are you going to continue to replace with HDD or switch to SSD for any?
honestly the only reason I still have it is because I just keep migrating it to newer pc's
I run HDDs and SSDs
oh my main drive is a 1TB 970 evo
SSDs are getting so cheap now
I have like 10 HDDs and 10 SSDs
Had a customer who had his first drive replacement on a 1994 server in 2012
That was fun
Trying to find the correct part
my gaming rig has 3 SSDs and no spinning drives
server has 6 HDDs, 3SSDs
and then there's another machine

99% of all drives we sell are ssd for the last 5 years
And a 16TB SSD is $85000
List price that is
Usually stuff like that is discounted 95%
SSDs are probably going to be replaced rapidly with nvmeof and optane the next 2 years
A don't think I have 10TB collectively in my entire house
3 10TB drives, what a strange number
Heh.
this is probably the last desktop I'm making with hdd's though, it was hard to find a nice case that still had 3 3.5" caddies
I have about 60 TB in my house.
My main server is 4x10, 4x4, 4x2 plus 512/256ssd
now I have a fractal design mesh s2 and like a third of the case is just empty
I just built the server in an Obsidian 750D
It's a fantastic case and was stupid easy to build in
My fractal node 202 is full to bursting
Yes!!! My Loctite Fun-Tak (Blue-Tak equivalent), arrived. ๐
huh, the speaker isn't too bad on this thing
I know, such a wierd thing to be excited about... But i've been waiting a week for this, to use for testing angle mounting a motion sensor. LOL
The speaker in the new mini home is better than the old, replaced the wife's and she noticed a lot of difference
Anyone know of a decent temp + humidity sensor that works well. Maybe even one you can plug in?
Hah, I wish.. I looked.
I see the AOEN one but alot of people bitch
I'm happy enough with the xiaomi ones
If you want something done right, you gotta #diy-archived
Aeotec, ewwwww
I found the bass lacking in that @midnight adder but I have the first gen I think
I don't trust ANYTHING by Aeotec anymore.
Imagine using smart speakers for listening
Yamaha Music Cast + your own equipment
It's the way to go
gen 1 mini was super meh. gen2 is slightly better than meh
meh++
my smart speakers just serve as a voice interface/alerts
I use one in the garage for background music while I work, it's ok
My garage is attached so putting a cheapish 2.1 system in there was easy
heh
@brazen fable I just use it for background noise, listening to the news
The Symfonisk is actually quite good, I have one in my office
aye
Yeah, I could easily put a speaker setup in my garage.
if I want to listen to music I'll just turn on spotify on my pc, I have nice edifier speakers
Speaking of systems I need to upgrade my rig's system. It's still 2.1
Meh, spotify.
FLAC library master race
Now I see why you have so many drives
spotify is great for finding new tunes though
FLAC isn't that big. :p
yeah my entire FLAC library is less space than 2-3 4k movies
hell the marvel 4k collection alone is massive
I had /walls/ of CDs, before I ripped them all into FLAC+ogg, then FLAC+m4a.
I listen to so much strange progressive music that I have to download it to listen, but I use Spotify discover for a lot of stuff
I listen to all kinds of stuff
A lot of my stuff is imported from Finland, Sweden, etc. ๐

Yeah my main music library isn't even all that big
Heh, nowhere near the size of mine. ๐
I've got a ton of stuff i don't include in there

Brown cheese?
Googling chocolate cheese came up with a recipe for cheddar cheese fudge
I am both curious and disgusted
What the actual fuck
Some of the other recipes are made with velveeta

Brown cheese is delicious I'll tell you
Apparently you can get it in the us @scenic radish
Ski queen they label it as there
Doubt it
Looks like someone used a wood planer on cheese
I can't remember where I know that stuff from but I can taste it in my mouth right now ..
Scandinavian I think.

That seems like some big goals for a space that small

Gotta try that wd purple
They should be long life, but it's early days
I want to make my RPI permanent with zigbee2mqtt and I need storage I can trust and doesn't stick 10cm out of it
@clear ferry then stop trying to make love to it and nothing 10cm long will stick out of it ๐
Why does WD offer financing for hard drives
Because it's an easy way for companies to prey on financially unstable people
There's no point in WD purple when you can get a WD Red the same size for $130 at best buy
Hides from WD hitman team
yep
even the white labels are reds
just look for the emaz
they switched em to white labels because people were buying them and then reselling as reds
lol
all of my new drives are shucks
Yap WD100EMAZ-00
I use a chisel and they're out in about 10 seconds
i keep a single enclosure in tact in case of a DOA
although i'm all set on storage for a while i think
I'm just waiting for freenas 12 to enable pool expansion
Then I'll add 4 more 10tb drives
Propitary proxy filesystem, and windows, I'll pass ;-)
Why anyone buys just drives now is beyond me. The externals are insanely cheaper
Which is odd from a business standpoint surely costs more for all the retail packaging, power supply, plastic casing and pcb than it does to just sell the drive direct in an anti static bag.
Consumer price is subsidized by the business purchases at closer to retail
most externals come with bulk cheap drives as well
ok cool, h264 cameras are the best thing ever
hi all! im having a bit of issue installing ESPHome to my esp8266
that 240x320 resolution really clear huh @brisk glen ?
@forest edge I have 1080p cameras
@brisk glen now just wait until you get to the year of 2020 and find out about h265
@azure plinth are you using an FTDI?
im running home assistant in a Hyper-V VM and i have an esp8266 id like to install home assistant on. i cant seem to make the OTA update work, my mdns is not setup and i cant figure out a different way to flash. hyper-v has no usb passthrough to VMs
i am not using FTDI, i have one of the boards that has it built in with just a micro usb
i believe a NodeMCU
thanks for directing me
@brisk glen I was teasing. mjpeg has always sucked but ironically not everything supports h264/5
I Donโt think you can install@home assistant on esp8266@azure plinth
Why anyone buys just drives now is beyond me. The externals are insanely cheaper
@quartz ether most people buy NAS without hard drives and buy HDDs when they find deals.
@last plaza was more you can shuck and external and get a drive the same size for half the price. To then put the blank drive into a NAS.
@last dirge Iโve been looking for them. Not much lately.
@quartz ether hooray for extra e-waste
WD Whites in the externals are the same as the WD Reds so just wait for a best buy special and then job done internal drives at fraction of the price. Also WD warranty is on the drive so it covers it even though it has been removed. (just test before shucking so you can take it straight back to best buy if its a dud)
๐
That is how you get a good deal @last dirge
Yup
@last dirge just got a new software upgrade v10.2 (2020.16.21) - I can now format usb from the dashboard.
I got the push notification
my wife decided to take the car somewhere though
dog had to go donate blood
Iโve formatted 1TB ssd for recordings, and it wasnโt storing it for some reason. I formatted to Fat32 and the volume label is tesla_cam. With the new update, I formatted from the dashboard, it works now!
I really like the new dashcam viewer!
Externals are fine. The Red drives they are selling are coming out with it. Stay over 8tb and you are fine
8TB and above they arent telco, afaik
With my current upload speed, my backup will complete in an estimated 43 days.
๐
@brazen fable need to download more upload
Downloaded some more RAM the other day, total game changer
Downloaded some more RAM the other day, total game changer
@scenic radish oh? did you get eRAM or RAM+?
eRAM++
oh the new stuff, i hear it's trash
I need to think about my storage strategy long term
I have 4 x 4TB in my Nas which has been holding fine for quite some time
But not sure what to do once I outgrow that
Unraid, mergerfs and freenas all have their pros and cons
delete some stuff
I do
Not in ironwolfs etc
I do mergerfs. Looking to move off of it
Plus 10 x 4 is a bit big for a SHR/RAID5 array
ZFS is resource hungry as hell though.
I've been using unraid for a while now, its good for basic storage if you dont need high read or write speeds
its simple to use
Mergerfs/snapraid seems a icky
For all it's flaws synologys approach to btrfs is quite nice
thats why it's an arm and a leg
I remember when synology came out and was actually cheap
Their appliances aren't really that expensive they're just feature limited
I have 240GB on my laptop and 2x120GB on my server so I'm set
If you want to whitebox something you're looking at a lot
Powersupply, motherboard, chassis, cpu, ram, os drive, adds up very quick
living that marie kondo life with your data tediore
I got 42TB usable space on my server atm, should have me set for a while
The only media I have is music and even that's not a ton
Oh, sorry a "tonne"
Even just baby photos is chewing up an not insignificant amount
Phone RAWS add up
all my music is great and nobody elses is
But you got me beat. I have a bit more than this, but this is my main collection
With that level of storage I am sure you got me beat on TV and Films
I got like 16TB free atm anyway
That gif was yuge
I prune pretty regularly
My ๐ ฑ๏ธ
I leave things up for users mainly, and if I ever watch again
but I have hit a point where my acquisition has slowed a lot
@ocean mirage my collection is just Muse
heh
oh huh maybe not
๐
i am not at home to calculate it now
I know I got ~460 films
and 90 something series
You got me beat on series by a long shot, but I've got more movies
and multiple copies of many movies in 4k and another in 1080p
oh yeah gotta avoid transcoding those 4k
yep
every 4k film has a 1080p duplicate
some people are really weird about that
and also, non HDR appliance don't handle it well anyway
i tell em just buy more space its cheaper
yep
There's a reason netflix, YouTube etc store everything pre rendered
This is how people that transcode 4k browse the internet
I don't see the problem

The good old days
I used to write Browser Helper Objects - we used to calm them BHOs. They are essentially toolbars that has access to the entire DOM.
Worms that took down 100 000 MS servers in a day
Using telnet remotely
Atx would have been installing his last 10gb backbones
I remember sending people sub7
Speaking of which, why tf does my edgerouter have a telnet option lol
no ask jeeves
But it's probably because there's still crusty old network admins out there who use telnet over the network to manage everything
Because thisishowwevealwaysdoneit
I think security at a company is like a bell curve over size
Small companies have shit security, medium sized companies have great security and behemoths that aren't tech companies use telnet and ssh port 22 with password login to access core gear
You hear stuff on Reddit of banks emailing excel spreadsheets of customer details to each other and all sorts of stuff
One of the biggest banks in Australia only allows you to use something like 6 or 8 characters max in your password
"password doesn't meet requirement...must be 8 characters or fewer?"
wut?!?
...wut
Case insensitive
Lemme guess, MFA isn't an option either
I think you get an sms for external transfers
But nothing to login or transfer to existing accounts
Goodness
This is how people that transcode 4k browse the internet
@brazen fable Dude, stop connecting to my desktop via VNC

trying to search for google and you are causing me all sorts of problem.
I wonder how many of microsoft edges first searches are "chrome download"
alexa says 99%
What makes it funnier is edge is now a chrome fork
Don't know what you guys are talking about re: transcoding. Processing power and bandwidth are both cheaper than storage still ๐
Of course, people that have an issue with is normally are running their stuff on a pi or synology ๐
It's really not. Storage is massively cheap.
And transcoding makes everything look like dogshit anyway
Transcodes will always be inferior
It's just the nature of lossy media
Most software uses the same codecs and process to transcode as to create the 1080p file to begin with. So why do you say it looks like dogshit? Of course it's lossy
๐ฟ
Because when you re-encode you automatically lose quality
a transcoded 4k stream to 1080p will never look as good as a stream ripped to 1080p
And that will never change.
And in other factors that don't translate well, e.g. audio channels and HDR and yeah, there it is
I still say not worth the 2nd copy of everything but hey to each their own lol
Mostly because I use RAID for all my storage and just had to spend about a grand to upgrade all of my drives from 3 to 6 TB ๐
You could say that, but then you'd be wrong. a 1080p copy is hilariously small. We're talking 10-20gb
I thought the goal was more adapting the stream to the client's abilities than it was quality
It's both really
Well, yea. Because nobody normally has all of the exact same clients
Not to mention you can get way more streams if you don't need to transcode, and you can use the machine for other purposes
Guess there's pros and cons to Plex vs just having a shit ton of storage for different encodings
con, lots of duplicate files taking up extra storage
Isn't that the debate here?
Duplicate files, no transcoding vs one file with transcoding
a fast enough CPU with hardware transcoding (or GPU offload) can make the "cost" of transcoding pretty cheap
Yeah I get that. Guess you have to consider how noticeable it'd be on a mobile device though
And there's no way around that, and probably never will be
No
You're thinking of encoded
which is what happens when you dump the raw into a container, which is ok
right, i'm counting that as raw
a transcode is when you go from a lossy format to another lossy format, losing tons of quality
although you can transcode from raw technically
but nobody really stores raw video
if your 1080p file is <~20G you're likely transcoded down
which is handled via transcoding
no that's encoding
Similar but different
Kind of. The subtle difference is rather important
Actually makes a lot of sense when you look at what the prefixes of each word mean
A another word etymology fan? ๐
@sinful oak the real problem with on the fly transcoding is it's real time
It's not 2 pass etc
When studios encode stuff they do it from original camera files and sfx renders etc
Then they use finely tuned methods to encode for best quality
And even rencoding from a BD mux to a mp4 in non real time is far superior
But real time encoding on demand is fundamentally flawed because it can't do any of the tricks that an asynchronous transcode can
It's real restaurant vs mcdonalds
Mickey D's!
KFC blows lol
Popeyes is my favorite chicken but really only because of their spicy tendies
Their biscuits are good too, yeah
I haven't had any of the fast food chains since.. sometime in early 2019 I think
i've avoided fast food since the whole covid-19 started
minimum wage workers that can't afford to call in sick...just seems like a bad idea
Unless you count a single donut at dunkin donuts while I was in the us because @scenic radish told me to get DD coffee
Minimum wage, such a strange concept
American exceptionalism...we take pride in paying people the bare minimum
i've been watching Hey Arnold...such a good show from my childhood
The good thing about Norway, that no American understands when I discuss it with them is that all salaries and taxes are public, anyone can see what someone else earns or pays
The average hourly pay for McDonald's employees in Norway appear to be $16 plus extras per hour
Had this discussion with a company mananger last time I was in the us, he thought it was insane that anyone could see what he or his manager made per year, and I just said if I know what my colleagues or my manager is making, I know what I'm worth and if I'm getting what I deserve, you have no idea if you are making 10% of all your colleagues
In celebration of Asian Pacific American History Month, a classic moment from Hey Arnold! when Mr. Hyunh (voiced by Baoan Coleman) tells Arnold the story of his long lost daughter, Mai.

Anti-disclosure of wages is definitely something that's made to benefit employers
Good show
But it's been contrived to be a "benefit" to employees
In Norway we have to search up the wages online, and we get logged while doing it, in Sweden you can go into any library and search for it

Covid might be the perfect transition for me to move back north , we'll see how this year unfolds
I hate commuting
I grew up in a town where 50% of the population lived in 5km radius of the centre
We had a company wide don you accept a 10% paycut during the last financial crisis, all us employees accepted it, because they had to to keep their jobs, no European employees accepted it, because, why would we
moving/getting citizenship some place where there is universal healtcare would be awesome
hopefully i can do that before retirement
My "commute" was a 6 minute drive, traffic signals were only red for about 20 seconds and you always made it through first pass
I grew up in the biggest town in northern Norway, but it still was a tiny shithole
Only fibre to the moose?
@odd mason if you don't do it the next 12 months you'll never probably
@hushed basalt pff, we had FTTH since 2004
gotta get to retirement first
i'm hoping in the next 10 years
American salaries are still very hard to beat in other parts of the world
I still have 31 years to retirement atleast
Maybe I can live in Norway and work remotely
I don't like the idea of driving through snow
Or driving in generap
The average Norwegian monthly salary is about $5000
that's a good average
But the average loaf of bread is $500
more north more bad
i'm above that, my wife is below
why would you
by retirement i mean i don't HAVE TO work. i'll still work cause i love what i do. but i want to be financially independent by 45
5k gross or net?
i was talking gross
I'm 50% above it, my wife is 100% below it
My wife has a masters degree so she could get in that way
same
both wife and i are above that right now
a Special Ed teacher to boot
She's an british citizen too not that that helps
Who would want to live in the UK :D
well not anymore lol
i have no skills
I mean, if you like rain @hushed basalt
pre-brexit it would work
but my partner is doing her masters so i could move there
if only it wasnt cold and filled with norwegians
lol
i don't mind cold
But, in the south we have nice weather
grew up in the midwest
KCLT
i'm in the south now...may-sept is brutal
okay now whats what
(airport code)
A Norwegian house in winter would be more comfortable than an Australian house in winter
who goes outside?
yeah its never warm out there atx
WFH, live indoors
i do WFH now i still go outside
Just have a big house and big workshop :D
108F today here .... FML "100 days of summer"
I've been inside all week with the flu
oof
ouch
Now I have bronchitis, yay,
Those are low averages https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/24/how-much-americans-earn-at-every-age.html
low humidity tho .... and not so bad in 3ft of water with beer in hand
Australians can't build houses
haha
hes not wrong
no wood and you ship all your steel to china
until ecobee cloud goes down lol ๐
australians cant do a lot of things though
Like I literally can't find someone to build a house worth a damn without it being a luxury build and cost 4x the average
yeah i know someone in the same boat
Arizona
yup
yikes
desert
You should try my hometown @hushed basalt
https://weatherspark.com/y/84211/Average-Weather-in-Tromsรธ-Norway-Year-Round
In Tromsรธ, the summers are short, cool, and mostly cloudy and the winters are long, freezing, windy, and overcast. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 21ยฐF to 59ยฐF and is rarely below 9ยฐF or above 70ยฐF.
PHNX in fact lol
i don't even leave the house if it's over 80
.f2c 108
108 degrees fahrenheit = 42.22 degrees celsius!
oh yeah thats about the peak temps we get in my city
hot AF but I grew up in it
I'd never miss our 46 degree summers
i've been thinking about portugal
dry heat
they have like 70 degress year around
not as bad as wet heat
Especially with our dogboxes of homes
yeah 46 is hotter than ive seen
and you can get a citizenship fairly easily
"dry heat" lol nailed it
Portugal is so rainy
Would be fine if working indoors and houses were performant
lived in utah for a bit
i dont' mind rain tbh
Ogden area
as long as it's not too hot
rain isn't the issue, humidity is ๐
it's quite nice tho ... i usually am laughing at folks when we are hanging our feet in the ppol Thanksgiving while everyone is shoveling snow
100 degrees fahrenheit = 37.78 degrees celsius!
i dont mind high humidity until it gets over like 35
yeah
the car is worst
beautiful city but still hot as fuck
high humidity sucks if you got physical work to do tho
yup! and if you went to UVA, some of those dorms don't have AC
move to coober pedy
physical work...what's that?
random HA question ... will 0.110 actually break my existing z-wave?
Worse than the heat though. Is flies
no
no it won't
Bush flies are the worst curse against humanity
you have to explicitly add the new integration
i didnt even notice many flies this past summer, it was weird
normally we get mobbed
Yeah, Canberra
ok back to bitching about the heat then lol
Did all the cattle get BBQd during the summer?
it's been nice here in atlanta area last few weeks
oh I guess they probably moved some of then
Bush flies come from cattle poo
lol its been a shite 12 months for yall
at the closest I was about 14km from the fire I think
Drought (continuous) into Fires into Covid
Less cattle less flies
man that fire was something
had a few deaths from the smoke
feel bad for y'all there
| atlanta
@odd mason how's that governor going for ya ๐
lol yeah everyones bathroom is open
Literally killing us long term from VOC and particulate pollution
It's called heat recovery ventilation
telco: how the fuck does us have better construction standards than yall?
We're corrupt and ignorant AF with a smaller market
are the kiwi's just as bad?
i was just gonna ask that lol'
