I tried the ESPhome one atx, but never got it to work for some reason. I have a MAX6675 but I'm not getting any numbers from the probe that I have. Instead of trying to figure out what the problem was, I just gave up.

I have something that looks almost exactly like that, but I'm not sure if it's a "k-type" or something else. I'm not getting any readings out of it on the max6675 so I'm assuming it isn't

unkempt geyser
#

I tried max6675 and never got any readings from it. I did with the max31855. I have added a few probes around the grill to provide me with ambient temperature using ESPHome. I added a Rotisserie which is why I went down the Meater route. Was disappointed I couldn't integrate it so built something and then reached out to their founder to say they're missing a trick or two. More info here > https://github.com/jcallaghan/home-assistant-config/issues/21

orchid rose
#

I get a value off the max6675 if I short the input (gives ~30C) but if I connect my probe I just get errors probably due to the value being out of range. What was your issue with the 6675?

unkempt geyser
#

I just never got a reading back at all. Same probe worked fine with the max31855.

Don't know what you guys are talking about re: transcoding. Processing power and bandwidth are both cheaper than storage still ๐Ÿ˜„

undone aspen
#

Hmmm

#

I wonder if they ever fixed the ESP32 Bluetooth scanning issue.

brazen fable
#

It's really not. Storage is massively cheap.

#

And transcoding makes everything look like dogshit anyway

#

Transcodes will always be inferior

#

It's just the nature of lossy media

sinful oak
#

Most software uses the same codecs and process to transcode as to create the 1080p file to begin with. So why do you say it looks like dogshit? Of course it's lossy

scenic radish
#

๐Ÿฟ

brazen fable
#

Because when you re-encode you automatically lose quality

#

a transcoded 4k stream to 1080p will never look as good as a stream ripped to 1080p

#

And that will never change.

#

And in other factors that don't translate well, e.g. audio channels and HDR and yeah, there it is

sinful oak
#

I still say not worth the 2nd copy of everything but hey to each their own lol

#

Mostly because I use RAID for all my storage and just had to spend about a grand to upgrade all of my drives from 3 to 6 TB ๐Ÿ˜„

brazen fable
#

You could say that, but then you'd be wrong. a 1080p copy is hilariously small. We're talking 10-20gb

scenic radish
#

I thought the goal was more adapting the stream to the client's abilities than it was quality

brazen fable
#

It's both really

sinful oak
#

Well, yea. Because nobody normally has all of the exact same clients

brazen fable
#

Not to mention you can get way more streams if you don't need to transcode, and you can use the machine for other purposes

scenic radish
#

Guess there's pros and cons to Plex vs just having a shit ton of storage for different encodings

brazen fable
#

wdym

#

This goes for any kind of media really

wet pilot
#

con, lots of duplicate files taking up extra storage

scenic radish
#

Isn't that the debate here?

#

Duplicate files, no transcoding vs one file with transcoding

wet pilot
#

a fast enough CPU with hardware transcoding (or GPU offload) can make the "cost" of transcoding pretty cheap

brazen fable
#

But it's not just that. It's also quality

#

Transcoded media will always be janky

scenic radish
#

Yeah I get that. Guess you have to consider how noticeable it'd be on a mobile device though

brazen fable
#

And there's no way around that, and probably never will be

wet pilot
#

i mean, anything other than the raw media is still transcoded

#

just not JIT

brazen fable
#

No

#

You're thinking of encoded

#

which is what happens when you dump the raw into a container, which is ok

wet pilot
#

right, i'm counting that as raw

brazen fable
#

a transcode is when you go from a lossy format to another lossy format, losing tons of quality

#

although you can transcode from raw technically

#

but nobody really stores raw video

wet pilot
#

if your 1080p file is <~20G you're likely transcoded down

brazen fable
#

but you can do it with audio, e.g. flac/wav etc

#

No that's compression

wet pilot
#

which is handled via transcoding

brazen fable
#

no that's encoding

#

Similar but different

wet pilot
brazen fable
#

Kind of. The subtle difference is rather important

scenic radish
#

scenic radish
#

Very much so

#

en- to put into (basically)
trans- across

hushed basalt
#

@sinful oak the real problem with on the fly transcoding is it's real time

#

It's not 2 pass etc

#

When studios encode stuff they do it from original camera files and sfx renders etc

#

Then they use finely tuned methods to encode for best quality

#

And even rencoding from a BD mux to a mp4 in non real time is far superior

#

But real time encoding on demand is fundamentally flawed because it can't do any of the tricks that an asynchronous transcode can

hushed basalt
#

My "commute" was a 6 minute drive, traffic signals were only red for about 20 seconds and you always made it through first pass

clear ferry
#

I grew up in the biggest town in northern Norway, but it still was a tiny shithole haha

clear ferry
#

The average Norwegian monthly salary is about $5000

clear ferry
#

I'm 50% above it, my wife is 100% below it haha

hushed basalt

autumn tartan
#

ocean mirage
#

australians cant do a lot of things though

hushed basalt
#

Like I literally can't find someone to build a house worth a damn without it being a luxury build and cost 4x the average

ocean mirage
#

wet pilot
#

dry heat

odd mason
#

they have like 70 degress year around

wet pilot
#

hushed basalt
#

Especially with our dogboxes of homes

ocean mirage
#

autumn tartan
#

"dry heat" lol nailed it

clear ferry

wet pilot
#

Ogden area

odd mason
#

ocean mirage
#

odd mason
#

odd mason
#

hushed basalt
#

Bush flies are the worst curse against humanity

autumn tartan
#

autumn tartan
#

quite a few devices

#

109 is pretty good tho

ocean mirage
#

i didnt even notice many flies this past summer, it was weird

#

normally we get mobbed

autumn tartan
#

ocean mirage
#

autumn tartan
#
