ugh. I'm not looking forward, entirely, to replacing this 1-gang switchbox into a 2-gang one. LOL
i like that those jumpers have little pull tabs lol
i like that those jumpers have little pull tabs lol
@forest edge most of the jumper cables have those pull tabs. Not sure when was the last time you bought them π
@last plaza 1990ish something lol
@midnight adder there are plenty of folks have written install guides. We have a huge problem as most of them go quickly out of date or not maintained. Iβd suggest you follow the installation instructions on the official web site.
There are folks trying to organize and simplify the docs... effort is underway.
I had exactly the same impression π All are out of date... Change-log would be good
@last plaza I know it's open source, so I just want to give back π
Totally appreciate it! For your specific problem, #330944238910963714 might help.
I'm not good at coding (you don't want to see that...) but I have other skills π
Thanks for pointing me to #330944238910963714 @last plaza. Will ask for help there. See you!
Don't you just love when you plug in a machine you've been tinkering with for a while and everything just works
Lol awesome feeling
Man I'm on day 2 of my computer rebuild/cleaning/rearranging/new machines
This is taking way longer than I expected
I just fired up my new home server and everything just works.
Noice
https://valid.x86.fr/9g9jx2 Home server
It runs Home Assistant, Wiregaurd, Plex, Blue Iris, and probably few other goodies
Does the snapshot feature also back up things like custom components and HACS stuff?
@crystal pulsar more of a #330944238910963714 question
Ah sorry.
where can i find out about HACS
tnx
Looks like none of my neighbors' access points support 5GHz DFS channels so I have channels 100-144 all to myself
Suckers
i don't think you can select different channels for each SSID on the same AP
I have one AP broadcasting three SSIDs (main network, guest, and IoT) @rain swift
atleast you got it to yourself
5GHz is already way less congested then 2.4 anyway
Well, fewer things use 5GHz
what AP?
Unifi AC Lite
i'd think you could do SSID's on diff channels but might depend on AP
Pretty sure it's a per-radio thing, not a per-SSID thing
mesh requires all aps on same channel, it's how it works
I hope he is, otherwise super π€’
It's not mesh, I have one AP
you said 3
3 SSIDs
off one single unit?
Yes
3 as in one 2.4, one 5ghz and one banana phone?
wait your doing vlan crap
you got 3 off 5ghz?
Lol 3 2.4GHz, 3 5GHz (same SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 obvi)
You can't
it dosen't let you?
Not that it matters anyway, it'd be the same if all devices were on the same SSID
No, it's per-radio
I don't think it would cause issues. I don't think it's sending/receiving 3 separate radio signals, just identifying the signals differently depending on SSID. If you've got two APs, of course they would need to be different channels (unless meshed). Unifi will handle that though as I believe it does a channel hop/optimise every night by default.
well when he starts waking up to this pulsing pressure on the side of his head we'll know
Exactly, it's just logically segregating traffic based on what SSID the device is connected to
I just run one vlan like a boss, if you get hacked, you're hacked, ain't gonna matter much.
I block some things from talking to the internet in pfsense.
I mean...firewall rules can prevent issues if a device on a VLAN is exploited
If there's an exploit with the router itself that's a different story
meh, if you run everything right that isn't likely enough to matter. unless you pissed off the NSA then you're screwed anyways lol.
I have 3. Private, IoT, and Cameras. Defintely don't want the cameras phoning in or out. They exclusively talk to my NAS which is running my NVR.
Mine are private, IoT, and guest. I have some devices on the private network restricted to only talking to my server (no internet access)
I would combine IoT and guest but I want the IoT devices to be able to talk to my server (casting local media)
I just have some custom rules for that. Have a group called "Priority IoT" (nVidia Shield and PS4) which can talk to my NAS in the Private VLAN.
Though I could do that by IP range I guess
if someone is able to gain access to your network via a IoT device they will likely know how to get around the vvlan as well
Oh man...
Not the best work, including a little bit of drywall damage by the door frame there, but, damn that's sweet. π
That went from a 1-gang decora double switch (top was light, bottom was fan), to a Lutron Caseta dimmer on the right, and DewStop humidity sensor switch on the left.
how'd you damage the drywall? did you saw through the nails holding the box up or brute force it out?
Well, what was in there was a metal box, not nailed in by the side, but, nailed in, on an arm that was hiding under the drywall.
wtf?
Further, There was the double stud on the left, and a stud right on the right of the larger gang box, so I had to literally chisel out some of the stud itself.
To get the new gang box to even fit inside between the studs. LOL
Yeah. So, the metal plate ripped out the chunk of drywall there trying to get it out because, I was never going to get a double gang in there with even just a piece of that plate in.
That's the close equivalent to the type of gang box I pulled out.
Nailed, not on the sides, because there was no nail spots there. But on the front that went around the stud. :/
you could have sawed that out, it would have just taken awhile
A ... Really long while, yes.
+/- 45 hours
LOl
And worse the box itself, with a LITTLE beating on it, the frame just fellt apart, it was that old.
It was a one piece box.
Still. Fixing that little bit of drywall, won't take nearly as much. Cut it out with a good razor, make it nice and fine.. Screw in a new piece, paint it the matching color (which I at least have the matching color code to get that color re-mixed), and boom!
how much did you cut into the wood?
think the support on the house is still there?
Oh, barely any. 2~3/32"
And, it was a double stud, so two studs right against each other.
Yeah, Not nearly that bad. π
well you can never tell
I remember that one thread on reddit, where a guy removed a beam in his house and did some shady shit. Whole thread was tearing him apart
~6 years ago
And I lightly chisselled, only the area I needed, that was rough, getting the positions right, around the bathroom counter and the plastic gang hanging out.
Anyone have any word on when adding custom repos in HACS will be working again?
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
Sorry didnβt realize that qualified as support
That's odd...
π
Anyway, yeah. So, Now, I have a Lutron Caseta dimmer in both bathrooms, a DewStop humidity sensor switch in both bathrooms, and new exhaust vent fans as well. The old ones were screaming "replace me".
I wanted to go lutron, do you like it?
I really love it, with the reliability,, smoothnes, and reaction time of it. I have the Lutron Pro hub for it all, so I have detailed control over it, with the lutron_pro integration.
Which... I am about to update my json for switches now. π
it requires internet?
Not necessarily, not with the Pro, for sure.
Pro uses the telnet interface. π
The other has a local http interface, I believe, but you don't get as much control.
And from the Lutron mobile app, I send myself said JSON for the "integration report", which I simply apply directly to my HASS git repo. π
I'd only use it to interface with hass, nothing else
I wouldn't want to expose it to the internet
was just curious
Exactly what I do. HASS itself integrates it with HomeKit & Alexa for me. π
so it doesn't 'phone home' ever?
Not that I'm aware of.
it probablyd does for adding/removing devices and such, for the account, for the lutron app overall.....
price for hub & switches?
Depends on the switches. ~55~70 for switches. $55 for on/off, $65 for dimmer, $70 for fan control. Pro Hub is $140~$160.
I even have a Lutron Caseta LAMP dimmer.
and all require neutral or is it 'normal switch' configuration?"
Dimmers do not require neutal wire. Fan control and on/off switches do.,
but dimmers work with neutrals
So this makes sense. Maybe I'll make the switch. Not keen on dropping 3k atm. Might wait for some zwave to die
Not the dimmer switches. They keep just enough voltage going through to keep the switch powered and radio useful.
The on/off, can't do that (or simply don't)/
Course, if you need "3-way" or more, you just get Pico remotes, and you can even wall attach a pico remote into a switch gang.
My living room light never had so much control until Lutron Caseta. Before, the ONLY switch to turn on the living room light was clear inside the living room by the hallway. LOL
Now, I have a pico remote by the garage entry door, the front door, and the main switch where it was originally. LOL
The only thing that's wierd is... The switches are... Well... Flat....
That, takes getting used to.
that's not too bad though, they all look nice
They do look nice, they just don't have the same feel. π
Reaching in to "turn on a light", and you push a button, and it ends up being the off button or a single level of dimmer control, instead of turning on the light. LOL
I only have 1 on/off switch in the house.
My kitchen, with the transformed flourescent tube lights to LED lights, balast disabled.
they were slick
they are just as you describe, but it had a bar on the side that was touch sensative
so up / down was on off, and the slider was dimming
My front porch, lanai light, garage main light (with two plugged-in lights on TPLink Kasa smartplug), living room ceiling fan, living room lamps, hallway, bathroom, office, are all dimmers. π
Master Bedroom, not yet (needs re-wiring for fan/light control), and guest bedroom (needs re-wiring from light switch to light fixture, instead of light switch to REALLY old fan control switch and lamp wire to light fixture)
Though Master Bedroom has two WiFi bulbs, Kasa dimming bulbs.
And if .. IF there's a neutral wire in my light/fan switch... I'm hoping... Please be one... I can at least temporarily put my old GE Z-wave light switch in there to turn on/off the light+fan.
Right now, there's another decora-style double switch, top controls light+fan, bottom is.. Simply not attached.
Sad thing was, there was a sliding light dimmer switch there originally when I bought the house.
That would've destroyed the fan had it been used too much, as a dimmer that is!
I'd expect one in the fan switch box. But you do have an old house so... just open the box and check it out
yeah.. I forget WHAT is in there, other than I know it was just a 2-conductor wire, instead of 3-conductor. No independant control wire for the fan, basically.
@last dirge thanks man. Received today and already installed added to HA.
Yep
What costco things?
how'd you interface them?
Bond
James Bond?
is that some RF bridge I'm too poor to know about?
Bond maintains state as well. As long as RF remotes are out of site things should be good. Bond.io
Oops https://bondhome.io/
they're proud of that
Love it. Running 5 fans and now the 2 shades. Maintains all states.
got an eScooter motor on the way
figured out I can use the batteries for my EGO lawn stuff
Hmmm, one of these days, I want to get automatic blinds.
I've got a 7.5Ah battery for that system that's 12S3P
3P ? Nice.
Want to try something from them.
I've got the backpack blower, hedge trimmer, and a multi-head tool with a string trimmer and stick edger
Heh. I have gas powered stuff for those.
I could use s string trimmer. Keep all the heads clear throughout the week.
I ordered rotary scissors that should be here next week
that'll replace the string head
Nice.
I have 3 chargers now and I disassembled one of them and it'll make an excellent base for the mower
Gardeners sometimes miss around the rotors so string trimmer would be a nice addition.
I'm thinking possibly the Tradfri/Fyrtur blind system, from Ikea, might be my future one day. They, at least, do not charge an arm and a leg for simple blinds.
when it's empty you press a button on the head and feed the wire in and it auto winds
Fantastic
It's never been easier to load string line on a weedeater. I show how to restring an EGO 56V trimmer in just minutes! EGO Rapid Reload head!
ST1500F, ST1500SF, ST1502SA
Weed eater line replacement
@undone aspen I looked into those. The shade material is subpar
Yeaaaah,. I do worry about that.
sorry, that's the old version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHzHWHMXYgA
Here I explain how the POWERLOAD head works and how to load it.

Here is the Home Depot's Link for the whole line of EGO Power Equipment. https://www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors-Outdoor-Power-Equipment/EGO/N-5yc1vZbx5cZd9q
Its great for an office. π
I don't see how people do curtains or shades
I've seen track rail curtain systems, but they are expensive as heck, even for just a simple string-based pull.
gotta have the variability that blinds give
Yeah.

I have venesian blinds AND shades.
@undone aspen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtYdPwO65WI
In this project, we show you how to 3D print and assemble your very own Alexa connected curtain control system. It's low cost and easy to build.
π More info below π
It's based on an ESP8266 Adafruit Feather Huzzah, which connects to Alexa using its onboard wifi chip. If you'...
Yea, I've seen those, I may end up doing that.
@tidal bronze you've got more money than me dude
I bailed when I saw the cost of their controller
I did DIY 2 years ago. Not very pleasing to the eye.
Hmmmm.
Hell, I might just order the case for that to be printed and shipped to me. And order the parts.
then from blind to blind there's 3-conductor going to the next servo
I am looking for battery operated no wires at all.
but that's hidden by the trim panels at the top
His system that you referenced is battery-based, and that... Is not a bad idea.
650 cycles per charge.
I could definitely make it solar powered
And I have tons of rechargable AA batteries. π
it's just a single wemos and it only powers the servos when it's moving them
And Wifi, of course.
Solar is not a bad idea but then again the top stop will be lower than frame to hide the panel.
I gave up on motorizing them up/down
I couldn't find a source for sheaves that'd work with the gear motors I found
The top/down bottom/up stuff pretty cool.
they're plenty strong to pull the blinds up, I just can't find a sheave the right size to spool up the cable
I tested with 51:1 worked like butter. But I can't stand the eye sore
@last dirge gotta go clean up, thanks again for the great recommendation π
So. for $45 in parts, and an unknown amount of cost for the 3D printing needed.... I could have my living room curtain automated.
good to know they are worth a damn for the future
not the blinds, but the curtain. LOL
BTW 350 cycles per charge as well. @last dirge
they're battery powered?
Yep. Love it
USB charging?
Running POE to 12v 1A and turn on the port for 5 hours every 4 months. π
Gotta love HA
Course, I'd probably get the HiLetgo ESP8285, instead of the Huzzah Feather. That's just.. overpriced.
Oh,
The ESP8266 in this is powered by the USB, while the motor is powered by battery. Sheash. LOL
the Dragon launch is tomorrow, right?
1633 EDT
Wow Dark Sky is just giving all sorts of nonsense data now. I guess trying to get people to jump ship earlier than next year
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs @unreal orbit ?
Something about a norwegian front inbound. makes no sense
holy motherino
India had +50c yesterday
I gotta clean my office, I have so much stuff here I'm actually not sure where everything is anymore π€
Yeah I gotta do the same
And sell out giveaway a bunch of shit
Might sell my epiphone
I have never sold an instrument since I got my first one 30 years ago π€£
I am gonna restring and set it up and see what I think
but I haven't played it in ages so not much reason to hang onto it unless the setup makes me like it
I got like a psaltry? something like that and a couple other string instruments that lay on a table can't remember thier name, and a few guitars. can't play any of it lol
I have never heard of that
had to google it
It's like a fiddle, for people who can't play a fiddle ?
I would like a herdy gurdy though tbh
Worry not, "Fear of the Gurdy" will get a special treatment, because... it will be a part of my upcoming EP - HEAVY GURDY VOL. 1! π

@clear ferry I mean I guess nothing stops you from playing it with a fiddle but no you normally pluck at it with your fingers
the ones i have look alittle diffrent than what you posted
Forgot a ping I had running
π€£
Missing a digit in the first picture
you may wanna see a doctor about your 3-4 hour black outs. lol
You mean 331 hours blackout
I think ping having a default of infinity isn't the greatest

#frontend-archived I guess would be where to ask
Hi raider

Everybody else was once too π
do you have any guide or something ?
Itβs pretty useful that old thing. Some people keep a bible in the bedside table. Me? I keep the home assistant website url written on a piece of paper
#rtfm4lyfe
Be warned, YouTube videos are pretty, but they also become outdated pretty fast (same goes for any non-official docs)
Always sanity check anything against the official docs
No
Itβs pretty useful that old thing. Some people keep a bible in the bedside table. Me? I keep the home assistant website url written on a piece of paper
@tough igloo you're not a true playa until you have the forum PWA on your phone
I just play pull request logs on TTS when I sleep
Absorb the changes subconsciously
Lmao
I should do that but with #the-water-cooler because I miss all the good conversation when I'm sleeping
@clear ferry 0.0% packet loss... you really know how to get me going
heh
I will end you like a websocket closing
Oh man, I'm actually sore today from yesterday's work.
Ripping out a metal gang box and chiselling a little off a stud is no joke. LOL
do you feel its a point upgrading something that works thats isolated on a vlan and not accessible from general local or external if mostly upgrades are security patches or just leave it alone?
Was about time to give the stairs a new coat of varnish
Got no friend into home-automation and spent 30-35 hours working on this project, so i figured i'd share here!
Basically an interactive 3d floorplan, with brightness support.
Now working on adding color representation. It works well for red rooms but due to limitations of hue-rotate, I need to find a solution for the other rooms.
thanks por your response
I think this "lounge" is not for asking about technical things
do you have other "channel" for that ?
sorry for my english, I'm from spain
Yes, there are about 200 other channels. It all depends on your question
i don't have nothing yet
I've buy a new house
and I would like to start on that
Yes, there are about 200 other channels. It all depends on your question
@unreal orbit don't be silly! it's only 190
@unreal orbit don't be silly! it's only 190
@forest edge hahahaha
I would like to buy the new raspberry 4 (I have the 1 )
See where your question fits
@clear ferry what's "varnish" to you norwegians? Whale poop?
All else fails, ask in #general-archived and we'll direct you
lan in all the rooms, and MORE power plugs. Like really you'll need lots of them. Also some should be high on the wall (like 30 cm from the ceiling) to add stuff like RM minis, cameras etc.
once you put this base in place, then step two is add more power plugs.
I already have lan in all rooms
ok, add power plugs! π
yeh I had to do switch to ubiquiti aas well
No, just the blood of our enemies@forest edge
do you think if I want to practise, if the Raspberry 1 is enough ??
I'll buy the 4, but only to practise with 1
@clear ferry well that's good cause I would imagine normal vvarnish would make those outdoor steps slick lol
ah
https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/installation/#performance-expectations @midnight adder
@clever mortar thank you !!
Pi 2 = potato performance
Hmmmmmm.
Okay. I think I'm going to try to work on a design for curtain and blind control.
@clear ferry leveling? :p
hehehe. kinda meh good enough
I'm Ron Burgundy?
Even if solar panels are horrible for smarthomes, its still nice to see over 9 hours since any power came from the grid, and exporting around 3-7000w after house consumption depending if the 3 ac is running
Why are solar panels horrible for smart homes?
Good question.
I want to solarize my house and take back some from the electric company. As much as possible anyway. With a fully automated inverter system.
Solar, though just comes with some pitfalls. The sun isn't always out, so you have to provide backups.
Apparently they generate as much signal noise as you are complaining about @unreal orbit
Oh really? Huh, interesting
@undone aspen actually, the sun is always up, for quite a few months some places
some places......
The sun is up, we just turn our back on it
yeah horrible signal noise. makes zigbee and 2.4ghz almost unuseable when the sun is up
Hmmmmm..
in sweden the army has even demanded removing panels cause it interfere
Well... Thankfully I don't use much Zigbee. π
Im selling the house atm so im just trying to enjoy it as it is
if you install go with something like solaredge where the optimizer signal uses the power cables, and dont use 3 phase inverters on IT grids, rather 3x 1 phase
keep away for solis and tigo
@late gate vendor/installer should address RFI issues and they usually do that pretty quick. Enphase would be the better way to go.
Although most RFI is on Ham bands not 2.4Ghz and above π
@tidal bronze I had two year fight with that tigo let 45 zigbee and ap points spamming going through channels looking for new optimizers the whole day. they conclude it was no issue at all and refuse to change how they operate.
you I have an install that was based on hassio. I keep getting updates but should I switch to docker compose or something like that?
@late gate no idea what tigo is. Brining AC down instead of DC from panels eliminates most of the RFI == enphase
tigo is a optimizer brand
yeah maybe a lot of ways to make things better, but here i norway you have not much control over doing things yourself and are in the mercy of a few companies
that mostly just do things based on short experience
at least solaredge use a type data over the power lines to the panels, so they dont need to run a wireless signal on each panel. that helps a lot
but having each panel as an ap point is just not a good idea
wow hbo max has no 4k hdr content? wtf were they thinking lol
I would probably give them more than 1 day after launch π
Only streaming service I bother having is Netflix, and I only use it a few hours per month
Everything else is on my plex
plex + sonarr = win
I don't mind paying for services if they actually have good content. Saves me the hassle of finding it/hosting it
That's nice about sonarr
im still waiting for a service that got all instead of the increaing scattered services
I just add it
And sonarr does the rest
Even if it doesn't exist yet, it'll pull it later
and radarr of course
And lidarr
jupp
Most of these services give you quite a few simultaneous stream options, so we just share accounts with friends
ATT gave it for free with my fiber service
but still even D+ launched with 4k
these guys no 4k
no amazon, no roku
and only 5 devices
its like 25% of what the competition offers lol
I dont use 4k so never bothered me too much. im happy enough with 1080
Oh there's no roku app yet? Well that kills it for me until they add that
Looks like none of my neighbors' access points support 5GHz DFS channels so I have channels 100-144 all to myself
@scenic radish lucky you!
my ESP device by my pool is still playing the random connect/disconnect game
Booo
yea sometimes itll stay connected for hours
then randomly itll just flip flop
wow i had no idea there was a 1984 supergirl movie LOL
Supergirl?
yea lol
@shy comet clone esp?
@late gate dont think so?
Oh you mean literally from 1984, I thought you were talking about Wonderwoman 1984 and getting confused π€£
its one device thats at the pool
I'm Ron Burgundy?
which is the closest to my 3 neihbors
im assuming a rogue AP
WRONG RON
@shy comet its just we have esp esp discussion almost daily lol
lol
extra sensory perception?
the clones got around 20db worse signal than originals
Evil Swedish Parkour
any suggestions for a simple dynamic date log. I hatch turtoise eggs and would like to add to ha when a batch is laid so I can see the hatch time. not sure how I can add a list of dates without having to add a time entity for every hatch
@late gate maybe a input_datetime?
yes, but was thinking a bit more dynamic. if I get 10 egg lays, I have to manually make 10 input_datetime
Just finished driveway seal coating... crazy amount of work with filling cracks, patching and sealing!
wow
What really? In the next update or in .110?
yea its 80 here too
Takes days of work! π
nice. enjoy it while its fresh!
btw anyone know if the rocket launch is still today?
no more restarting for any of the input!
At least it is cloudy here! I was dripping the whole time!
@late gate according to the launch library integration its still on for 133pm pst
@unreal orbit you can also use teh UI to add them too
My driveway camera takes snapshots every minute. I can stitch them into a time lapse video.
Oh you have to call the service yourself, I see
I was wondering why it wasn't in the reload list in configuration server controls
Thatβs just my drive way. The walkway is a little blocked, but folks understand here.
Ah they're labeled as "helpers" now. Neat!
It is a cul-de-sac. Not many people walk. Only a few.
@unreal orbit i cant wait for template sensors to move there!
the less restarts the better IMO
Me too, I had the custom integration added for template sensors/binary, but the template render time was really slow for some reason
Are the slides available somewhere for the State of the Union 2019? https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2019/11/22/state-of-the-union/
What the hell just happened to all the installation method channels?
when in doubt, rebrand
Sorry, didn't realize it was actively happening
kinda cool we are getting official instructions for supervisd install over linux
debating if its worth it to switch from a venv or not
good evening all
Dang, I actually liked just the two channels
some of em should be separte i think
it was weird having docker and venv together
its like being in a conversation with 2 languages being spoken LOL
I hadn't actually seen too many overlapping conversations, but yeah I get that
The changes were made with the best of intentions. Sadly it turns out that humans are difficult to work with π€·
yup we are π
Please don't leave again @unreal orbit π
i dont really mind honestly i was just messing around
@scenic radish no plans to! but sometimes life happens
I'm just messing π
when you work from home its like you never leave π
A lot of people are having a hard time adjusting to that. Trying to relax in the same place you work
People got so used to physically changing locations they never learned how to mentally compartmentalize
lol
I'm taking a break from hard labor today, and working. On.... Automations. Since I have more devices. LOL
And, also, trying to decide what kind of Nema 17 stepping motor I want/need.
what do you need to use it for?
Curtains, on metal fishing wire.
Holy moly.
I feel like if your DIY project includes fishing line then something has gone wrong
Any type of string, really
Yeah I watched that tutorial... looked pretty hobo
im trying to do something similar lol but its more aheavy patio curtain
Heh. Still, if it can be hidden well enough, and be used with very nice curtains.... It's a hell of a lot better than spending exorbient amounts of money for crap curtains or rollers.
I mean, I might go above and beyond and make pulleys to make it smoother and nicer and all, but still. π
i got the esphome part setup so i just need a stronger motor and i gotta take it a apart a bit for it ot fit properly
My living room curtains are looped tops, and actually 6 panels.
Not just 2 panels. π
looks like a 3d printer stepper motor - same thing?
Nema 17's are often used in 3D printers.
hmmmmmm...
Checing out curtains to see if I can..... change them out. I have a huge living room window. LOL
How big?
Need a banana for scale
my ender 3 uses nema17
Well, 40"x2 panels would have to be able to lay out completely flat, and that's not possible with grommet style curtains. π
i use a wand on mine right now so i gotta take that piece off to see if its plug and play or i gotta print an adapter lol
And then it would barely fit and cover the center+outer edges.
my xiaomi vacuum started burning how fun
It's only 4 feet wide? That doesn't seem very big
77" wide, by 52" tall
It's currently using 6 panels, 3 on each side, because two panels are mixed with a differently colored panel accross the middle of those two. Something my ex-wife did.
I can't tell exactly how LONG the current curtains are, but they are basically nearly floor to ceiling. LOL
@late gate was the bin full or something?
@unreal orbit no, just started it and 5 minutes later it came a horrible sound when it went into turbo mode and smoke out of the back
Nothing stuck in the roller?
no, it was clean
been working fine for a couple of years, out of nothing it just happened
from a youtube search im not alone. it seems the fan and motor can burn
Hmmm...
40x84 navy blue.... Might actually go well with my living room.
Ugh,,, no.. Too long, I think 84 is what I have now, actually. LOL
Ohhhhhh... I think I see what happened before. My ex-wife bought panels at Home Depot, possibly, which they seem to only sell up to 37" wide panels. LOL
When they say Bob and Doug are going into space today, I thought these two are going! π

Yep. Bob and Doug are now back to drinking π
I would agree as I fell back on Pico for 20 years, but the last two years I've put in an effort to learn vi
@last plaza they scrubbed, right?
Yeah
Is it necessary to have homeassistant_ in front of all the installation method channels? Seems redundant and makes the channel names very long
- the one thatβs just called homeassistant
We had one of those before and it just attracts all kinds of support requests
For, ya know, home assistant
Unlikely to change anyone's mind on that one. The channels are meant to mirror the installation docs
Gotta learn things the hard way, sometimes more than once
We're stuck with what the install methods are named
We tried simplifying but it didn't help anything anyway
'course a lot of it could be avoided if people actually read the channel topics
Or it could be called home assistant installation method... but this is the home assistant discord and people are stupid
@wet pilot QQ - how do we nominate someone to be on the 'cookbook' page for HA - check this out https://github.com/JamesMcCarthy79/Home-Assistant-Config
(and no its not me lol)
probably the most thorough set of config info i've seen!
Probably just open a PR on that docs page
cool, wasnt sure if there was a formal nomination to prevent everyone uploading
will do
It'll get reviewed by the docs guys and they'll probably decide
Hmmmm
This is battery charger number 2 that I got that is USB powered for a charger, but has NO power brick. Just a USB-A to microUSB cable. What the frack is wrong with these companies doint this?
Is it necessary to have
homeassistant_in front of all the installation method channels? Seems redundant and makes the channel names very long
@unreal orbit I was thinking the same. Maybe we could use ha_ instead of homeassistant_. Since the blog post just came out, the channels reflect whatβs in the blog. We have changed these channel names so many times in the past, this is not permanent for sure!
I also suggested ha_ but it didn't seem to get much traction
yeah i agree they're too long with homeassistant_ in front
Are they not explanatory enough just being in the Installation Method category? Even βha_β doesnβt seem entirely necessary, but it would be an improvement
Unfortunately it seems like you need to be blatantly obvious sometimes...
But yeah, that was another proposed option too
Itβs just a minor annoyance either way, oh well
Hi lounge folk
so if the awesome hassbot can take codewalls and create a nice hastebin link
why don't we just like, have that be a feature instead of an "automoderator" sort of thing with all of the chasting?
just like, go ahead and post a codewall, and our friendly neighborhood bot will hastebin it for you!
the reason i heard in the past was because sometimes hassbot likes to sleep on the job
did anyone open an issue on github? π
the reason i heard in the past was because sometimes hassbot likes to sleep on the job
@amber bramble not more than the mods do π
We have given too much power to bot earlier to auto kick and ban people for violations like code walls, repeat postings...etc. we changed it now. We use that more of an utility than as an authority around here.
that's good!
but I feel like people don't treat that like a utility
it's like, naughty naughty user
and other people pile on
which there may be good reason for!
but I'm not aware of them
(I of course personally have not made such an amateurish mistake in a while. I'll have you know I'm a lvl. 3 noob)
It used to yell at people for posting code walls, also keep count on number of times they did, and automatically warn people and all. But problem is people are people. No bot can really fix everything.
And even though it does move it automatically (when it's awake) it's rather jarring to see on mobile
I gotcha. so maybe if it did it like preemptively it would be fine for all?
as in it nuked the codewall and made a link before anyone else even saw the message
Not sure that's possible tbh but skala would know more
The bot only gets the message after it is posted. It cannot change the original message. It can only delete the original posting, and repost the same with the link. This is Discord limitation, and not the botβs.
If I had the opportunity, Iβd have done that long time ago. We thought about a lot.
Makes sense
On the other hand, if the bot can change original message, it would be lot more fun. We can make all sorts of fun things with it. π
Hmnmm.. Who was it that pointed me in the direction of monitor.sh? I actually think it was Tinkerer?
moron posted a codewall, it is moved here bitches
If it auto edits "I ignored the rules and posted something that is too long. It is now here"
Yes. Thatβs how it used to say. It also used to say @midnight adder being an idiot, posted message more than 15 line. It is moved here <link>.
Lmao it actually said that??
People didnβt like that! Go figure!
Haha
Yep. I had a whole list of words I used in there. It used to randomly pick words.
I made an alternative bot that has a potty mouth. I donβt think I can use that in here π
Post one line of code 15 times. #lifehacks
Then get warned for flooding π€£
Get 15 secret bots!
Bahaha let's develop the codewall botnet
Post one codewall, insta permaban. Problem solved
Raspberry pi immediately crushed
Hmmm, well, this is most interesting. Perhaps I'm using too much power, but, I figured I'd tinker a bit with my RPi4 I'd stopped using for HASS itself, but made back into a prototype/testing system. Now, running monitor.sh on it, and unlike my p0w's, it's not slowing down a bit constantly scanning bluetooth devices.
Chili's has a sign that says illegally parked cars will be crushed and melted down. I was always quite worried about that as a child.
If you don't have a pi, $35 of functionality is removed from your server instead
I love those signs ngl lol
Trespassing will be prostituted.
ALL TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT
ALL SURVIVORS WILL BE SHOT AGAIN
Kind of like what happens if you ask for help in Linux Discord
I remember one year when I helped freshmen move in someone switched a sign that said NO PARKING IN FIRE LANE to NO FIRE IN PARKING LANE and I thought it was the funniest shit
@hushed basalt Discord GNU/Linux
Probably violated about 6 fire codes
It's ok though, no fire was allowed in the parking lane.

So I think my fiancee and I might need to reschedule our wedding reception :/
We're gonna still get married on our planned date but COVID restrictions will likely make it impossible for us to have the reception

@scenic radish congratulations! NY governor says folks can get married via video call.

I cant think of 10 people I like enough for that
Oh shit u rite, 144
lol
Your gaming pc is generating too much heat
With your Xbox, networking equipment, desktop, server
Terrible duct run
Only room with two exterior walls
Large window-to-wall ratio
you can come live here for the winter
|| from the window to the wall ||
and ill enjoy your weather
Are you going to get married at 12:12pm
What window dressings do you have in that room
Vertical blinds
π€’
this is telcos shit lol
Yes it is
I will not suffer the appearance of a pelmet
SE
Ur a pelmet
I mean that kind isnt doable everywhere
and I dont like it all that much
better than the wall mounted kind
Well that's a bulkhead but there's other ways
You can also have it in your cornicing
The blinds are only barely bigger than the windows
So you get a lot of sun coming in?
In that room for sure
I assume you can't put any external shading on a condo
Well, and in the others but it's the most direct in there and the kitchen which also faces SE
Nope
In that case the next best thing is to get some tinting on
I thought about that actually
Something with a low SHGC
But I would definitely fuck it up lol
You could get someone to do it, it will make a big difference
Basically there's two ways heat enters your home
Direct solar radiation, and through ambient transfer
The first is what makes greenhouses much warmer than ambient temperature, and is going to be your biggest heat gain by a long shot
Yup, their R value probably isn't super high for windows either, they're 20-year-old double glazed
you ever think about doing this as a job telco
But they're casement so they have a good air seal
R value isn't quite relavent in this case as your heat gain is coming from solar radiation coming in
Once it passes through your glass the blinds don't do much as the heat is already in your room
And it will pass straight through windows with a high r value
Just like if you built a glass house out of double or triple insulated glass and put it in the sun it's still going to cook
Ah true
So back to solar radiation, roughly half the heat energy is in the visible spectrum and almost the rest is in the IR
Our bedroom is facing east, and in the morning we get way too much sun light. Iβve installed room darkening blinds, and they are awesome. I can sleep until 10 if I want to π
So without external shading your best bet is a film that will reflect that solar energy straight back through the glass and into your neighbours face
lol. my bedroom faces backyard, neighbors house would be way too far.
And obviously there's a trade off with fixed film, reducing solar heat gain in summer but losing it in winter
@hushed basalt right in the face of the train that's 150ft away actually but good to know
the dumb fucks who built this place put a patio on the north side where all the windows are but I tore it down
That's why adjustable external shading is best, it works like a sun umbrella that you can put away when you're cold
We installed pull down room darkening blinds. We can always adjust the height and open close whenever we want
So you can use different films and they have SHGC values and VST values
Super Hot Grill Chick?
Although I have a whole house fan in my to do list for a few years. Couldnβt get to it yet!
Shgc is solar heat gain coefficient. So 0 to 1, and 0 is no gain from solar heat and 1 is maximum gain
Vst is visible light transmission
Window tint stickers are easier option for sure!
Home Depot and Loweβs carry them here.
You can tint your own windows but it is a skill to do right
I don't have the aptitude for adhesives,
This apt does not have Super Cow Powers
They are super easy if you follow directions and use proper tool. Just need squeeze and spray bottle with soap water.
Of course
And lots of squeeginf
And no grease and oils...etc. Prep is key
Plus you have to transfer a giant piece of film from roll to window without touching itself or anything else or dust
Or you ruin an expensive piece of film
It is not that hard. Iβve installed in two basement windows for us. Itβs been 10 years+, looking great.
Like I said I don't have the aptitude for it
The film@is not very expensive. Maybe $20?
Maybe in murica
Maybe.
So I have a small spare SSD that I'd like to make network accessible. Would you guys just use samba or do you have another suggestion? Mainly to use for backups for not-large files
I know some materials are expensive in some countries as demand is less.
Can you put it in your mini pc
I already have samba set up on my machine so it'd be trivial to add another location
You can't even get commercial tyvek in Australia
I have an open USB 3 port
Ssh or samba.
The SATA controller is taken by the main SSD
You could use it as a cache drive for downloading
I am a big user of decals. I like to do designs with the surgical knife. I go to a store called tellers, and I get decals from there.
I had to expand /var because docker filled it up with images π¬
I have a cronjob set up to prune weekly
Actually I guess I could just use rsync instead of making it network accessible
Unless my fiancee wants to use it
What does your fiance do
Yeah I already use rsync for my home assistant config backup
heh
π₯ π
Haha
She works in communication/marketing
Communicating her love for me...?
Alright it's borderlands time
Lol. I should create a virtual device for Alexa. βAlexa, turn off the sun.β βOKβ
Damn, the OG Google home is discontinued
And I missed the fire sale that a bunch of stores had
The mini or the big one?
The OG, the air freshener-lookin' ass one
Lol wat. Bundle is cheaper than the individual
Is that a smart plug?
I reckon they've screwed up and it's the OG mini and they've advertising it wrong
Yes it's disgusting aye
That's pretty standard size for AU smartplugs though
Yeah that thing is Y U G E
smartest thing i ever did was get a smart board instead of a plug. no chunk on the wall
@hushed basalt wtf...
If you don't have a good place to stash the powerboard though you just end up with a bigger problem :(
Zigbee outlets would be best
But $50 each and then $250 for an electrician, hah
Have you got the bigw link @hushed basalt ?
Looks like a mess up to me
Those plugs look too ugly though
I'd only use them in the roof to control ceiling fans etc

Ugh these headphones sound so good
those are good headphones!!!
@scenic radish you should definitely listen to this
Knight Rider theme arranged for 8 cellos by Samara Ginsberg
Ooo will do
found this gadget earlier today
works with cheap current clamps
@tidal bronze i havent found a thermocouple with an actual pointy end like the consumer ones do for the probe but the ones on amazon were good enough to penetrate beef and chicken
Going to do some digging. Meater is pretty interesting
No luck in reverse engineering that so far.
Time to cook is pretty cool.
@tidal bronze the Sorted guys did a review of it and they were impressed
but it's $$$
i looked at all those and i decided to go the ESP route since it was just easier and i use HA for notifications
inside, I use a shitty Maverick knockoff
on the smoker, I use a probe that plugs into my BBQ Guru
i have an input select with various meats and you just select one and HA does the rest based on my own predefined temps
Nice.
the automation gives me a 10 min heads up before internal temp has been reached so i can prepare to take it off the grill once its done
my goal was make it easy for the wife
10 degree lead time. π
Started to reverse sear a lot so looking for better monitoring options.
dat sous vide doe
Hmmm not a huge fan of that.
i love my sous vide
why not?
Reverse sear kicks ass.
it's fantastic
sous vide is reverse sear on steroids
and i use a Pi to talk to it via BT for mqtt control
Nopes. @last dirge
i mainly use it for temp notifications lol
got tired of hte anova persistent notification
Lets agree to disagree.
my Instant Pot does it

the charcoal chimney isnt terrible just takes time
Tons of YT on the subject. I side with reverse sear over SD.
charcoal chimney Alton Brown style is amazing
i have not heard of that lol
he puts the steak directly under the bottom of the chimney
what the hell.. when did the channels change names again? lol
Most of these YT stuff is blown out of proportion lol.

I am meeting with the founder of MEATER later, to share how a group of us have extended their product and integrated it with Home Assistant.
If they had an open API would you be interested in adding one of their thermometers to your Smart Home? Do you have one now, and miss not having an integration?
I'd be interested for sure. I tried building a thermometer myself to connect to HA but it didn't work for some reason. I find the Meater to be a bit too expensive for what it does, but iirc it has some cool features like estimated time left for cooking and so on that I could do some interesting and useful things with.
I'm trying to integrate a $10 one with esphome, but I haven't gotten around to it yet
Right now I'm too busy exposing my fat ass crack to the neighborhood while wood staining my stairs
Got a package yet @hearty depot ?
nope - But viennas postal service is a little.. overwhelmed

@scenic radish package will probably take even longer, last time I sent him something it took over three weeks
I wait like 4 monts already on things from ali - they ll come around.. eventualy

Good thing about Ali, if they don't arrive in time you can get money back
